CAG Threads Featuring Steam Games on Sale Elsewhere - Updated 1/9

Past CAG Steam Deal Threads

well I know we are just speculating on the date right now, but since I wasn't around CAG for the last summer sale, what is the best way to handle this in the OP? Without wikis it's going to be hard for me to catch everything (I have to leave the computer some times), so I'm open to suggestions. And yes, I realize very few people actually read the OP, but I expect we will see a lot more as ashes put it "seasonal CAGs" that might actually find it useful.
As I see it, there are three options.

Option #1 The OP is completely up to date with all the sales as they go live and you do all the work to make sure it gets done.

Option #2 You just say "screw it, I'm not doing all that work", and it rarely, if at all, gets updated.

Option #3 Various CAGs take it upon themselves to post the deals as they go live, including clickable links and prices, and you use that to augment your efforts to keep the OP updated by copying & pasting from their posts.

Option 3 clearly seems like the most reasonable choice. And let me take the opportunity to thank you, MrNinjaSquirrel, for all the hard work you do maintaining this thread. (Even if I rarely use the OP myself, but hey that's because I can't stand to miss a post...)

Either we tie Mr Squirrel to the keyboard or we go with option 2. Option 3 is outta the question since keeping up with the steam thread is rather similar to drinking from a firehose. (Seriously, how many of you read all the pages during the winter/summer sale? I know how it is... I do.) Just put a big 60-point font link "Sales be here"

This would be my suggestion: even though almost everything is on sale during the Summer sale, the only stuff that *really* matters are the daily deals and possibly the flash deals / community choice / whatever they are doing this time. Try to keep the OP as up to date as possible with these sales and I'd say that would be sufficient.

option 3 is the only way I can imagine getting (most) all of the sales. I don't know if it's just me, but copy and pasting titles, then linking them, then listing prices etc. all seems to take a lot longer than it should. I'm not complaining, but having some other CAGs post the sales in a way I can copy them directly into the OP would be a HUGE help, and something I would be forever greatfull for. I suppose we will just have to see how it pans out, but hopefully I can manage to update the OP regularly enough, if only to avoid all the "why is {insert game} not [insert price] like it says in the OP?" posts.

And thank you annihilator, I try my best, though we mustn't forget eldredpe was doing it almost all on his own before as well. so I'm just doing my as OP slave ;)

Good point.

Ok, well setting aside the hypothesizing about the starting date that we've already had, let me start the summer sale talk in earnest: What are the deals you all are most hoping to see? This is what I've got my fingers crossed for:

XCOM for $7.50

Dark Souls for $7.50 (I know Amazon already had it but now I have card money)

Witcher 2 for $5

Rocksmith for $7.50

Probably unlikely, but Fallen Enchantress: LH for $7.50. Doubt this will happen as it's still new, but that's the price I'd pick it up at.

Would like to see a nice deal on the Orcs Must Die pack that's cheaper than its been. Other than that, most of the stuff on my wishlist is going to have to see a pretty crazy discount for me to get excited. Amazon and Humble have spoiled us with bundle deals lately. I hope Steam can kick it up a notch. The only thing I picked up last winter sale was Sleeping Dogs. (Although if the best Valve can do is a 91% off price mistake on a AAA game, I'll take it. Especially considering how much I ended up enjoying SD.)

I second this. The flash deals and such are the big meat of the sales because that's when they drop the best sales for the entire sale period. I say to try and keep the OP updated to as current as possible to the flash deals and that should cover the bases for the most part. It's too tedious to go through and list every little thing, especially when some items will then be put into a flash sale meaning more and more revision and updating.

I do want to add that you do enough in my opinion MrNinjaSquirrel. If the OP can't stay updated throughout the entire sale, which I wouldn't expect it to, then no worries.

fuckin' A guys, you totally skipped over the unrealistic expectation phase. The Summer Sale won't start until you post games you want at the low prices you want them to be at so GabeN can get an estimate of how much more he can charge you for said games. You know you'll buy it anyway. Geez, you'd think this was your first sale...

If you want to see nicely organized steam sales thread, check out KaOTiK's past efforts on AnandTech (great reference for past pricing). Winter 2012. Summer 2012. Winter 2011. Summer 2011.
wow, and now I feel like my meager efforts aren't even worth mentioning. That's a rediculous amount of dedication. I use enhanced steam for price checking of course though, and think jshackles also has a good idea about it. I don't know, I wonder if we need to break out the surveys again

I gotta agree with ashes, Option 2 sounds like the least painful. Besides, can't they just check the steam client?
People might not be able to at work?
Damn, didn't take long for my idea to fall apart. :bouncy: I thought I was the only without internet access at work.

my list

Bioshock Infinite $5

Tome Reader 2013 $5

Petz collection 75% off

(been hoping for this one for the last 4 major sales)

Option #4

Start a new thread and have a couple CAGS, who are willing to update the deals, hold the post after the OP. All OP has to do is make a disclaimer in the first line to scroll down to the next couple post to find out the deals.

Anyone else blown away by how much has changed over the last year on steam? Last August Steam Greenlight was launched. Linux support left beta this February. The steam market came out after that. New profiles, trading cards, badges, coupons, etc. 3 years ago the Workshop wasn't even a thing.

I'm really impressed with Steam's progress, and it's only going to get better when the Steambox launches.

Is there any sort of off-site wiki solution where multiple users can contribute, ala CAG 2.0? I get the feeling implementing the wiki feature into 3.0 is a relatively big deal, otherwise we would have seen it by now. Or maybe we'll get lucky and it will be up and running by the time the sale starts. *glances at CheapyD*

I think saying fuck it for the summer sale is fine, with the stipulation that the OP should be updated with deals that have generally considered in the thread to be standouts or sleeper hits and sale-long.

It's really useful to have a list of the 20-30 games that are abnormally cheap or excellent and buried because they aren't flash/daily deals.

That way on the last day you can load up your cart with "the rest."

Keeping it totally updated is both insane and lacking in real returns.

During seasonal sales regular CAGs who usually benefit from the OPs existence become like us, constantly sifting through Steam deals.

The OP should be pointing out the hidden/sleeper deals, not the obvious ones everyone is following on the Steam homepage.

To quote myself, what about a Google or Skydrive spreadsheet and can give specific users (volunteers) the ability to edit as needed? This would prevent The Seasonal CAG Horde from burying everything, and make life on everybody a hell of a lot easier.

It's feasible, but who benefits from that?

It's a lot of work for everybody to highlight things in a format that's barely any easier to read than the Steam storefront itself.

I think we should be curating the OP to highlight what we think are the best deals that aren't obvious.

To quote myself, what about a Google or Skydrive spreadsheet and can give specific users (volunteers) the ability to edit as needed? Example: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ari1mOp2AqQWdG5KU29zbkZfWFZEc0szWlBWd3ltN0E#gid=2
It's feasible, but who benefits from that?

It's a lot of work for everybody to highlight things in a format that's barely any easier to read than the Steam storefront itself.

I think we should be curating the OP to highlight what we think are the best deals that aren't obvious.
Spreadsheet was just one option - something more readable (Word doc?) would be just as easy.

My only concern about curating the OP is who decides what "the best deals that aren't obvious" are? That in itself will take more time and effort on behalf of NinjaSquirrel having to monitor fellow CAGers recommendations among the chaos; with such time-sensitive deals, the delay might result in some members missing out. I just don't see how any one person can have an extensive enough knowledge of all the games on sale that are "worth it" to keep up without wanting to put a bullet through their brain. Not to mention everyone has a different idea of what is good and how much they're willing to shell out for it. There are just too many variables to account for - which are changing on an hourly/daily basis - for one poor soul to keep track of.

Yes. To me (and other forum-dwellers) the reason to check out the threads is for the little things.. the hidden gems.. and people's opinions on them. I'm not going to miss the big stuff on the store's frontpage.

When I don't want a questionable site like this one showing up in logs (or smacking into a categorized whitelist filter), I follow KaOTiK's thread on AT (and sometimes a few other reputable sites).

To drive this point home *again* price trackers, while helpful do not capture everything... What were the publisher packs last year? (don't capture coupons either)

Option #4

Start a new thread and have a couple CAGS, who are willing to update the deals, hold the post after the OP. All OP has to do is make a disclaimer in the first line to scroll down to the next couple post to find out the deals.
In theory, yes, but we're dealing with the unwashed masses here... that won't be respected... the unwashed masses are far far better at posting than reading. ...kinda makes "Please Keep off the Grass" signs seem exceptionally effective.

Steam sales have gone to pot in the last year. The only real enhancements are the Linux client and the Workshop. ...hey look shiny!

Is there any sort of off-site wiki solution where multiple users can contribute, ala CAG 2.0?
Might as well just use KaOTiK's list on AT, the list on slickdeals, or the like.

Those are the kinds of things that get figured out during the sale as the thread progresses.

Somebody thinks it should be included, PMs Ninja, and if it seems like a reasonable addition, he adds it.

I understand what you're getting at, and maybe "curating" was too strong a word on my part. We don't need to have some kind of threadwide poll or something. It doesn't need to be that formal or conclusive.

And the sales I'm talking about, generally, aren't ones you would miss, as they're hidden in the background through the entire sale.

Flashes and Dailies are well advertised.

Might as well just use KaOTiK's list on AT, the list on slickdeals, or the like.
Linking to KaOTiK's Ars list is probably a fine solution for keeping the OP up to date for flashes and dailies. He does a fantastic job.

And adding a few thing to the title when they stand out.

Damn it CheapyD, please come to the rescue with wiki implementation for the site!

On a side note, if a community-curated wiki/blog/document were to be collectively decided on, I'd be happy to help out.

Update the OP with dailies; if someone can't check the Steam client/site/mobile app for whatever reason, they can't buy anything either so it's a moot point.  Trying to keep up with flash sales/whatever else gives too much probability for outdated information.  Let the thread do the work of posting stuff, because people undoubtedly will anyway.  I like the idea of maintaining a list of "this has never been remotely this cheap" or "look at all these 50 cent games" in the OP because it can't really be wrong.

Wow, I own *everything* on that list. The highest value adjunct to Dishonoured is FO:NV Ultimate. I am pleased to see that they had the decency of listing the Deluxe version of Oblivion GOTY. I can say Hunter" The Demon's Forge is decent if you'd rather not pickup a title you don't already own.

But here's the real outrage... WTF isn't Rourke Warrior on the list?!?

Sadly, the only thing I don't own from the list is Dishonored. I'm pretty certain with it's recent price drop that we'll see it for $9.99 or possibly even $7.49 during the Summer Sale (next week?!?!?!?!) so I think I can wait til then.

On a semi-related note: I played a few hours of Evoland tonight and absolutely enjoyed it. The game mechanics I found to be similar to DLC Quest but quite a bit more polished, which is exactly what I was hoping for. I already feel like it will be quite short (I'm pretty sure I'm close to the end) but $5 for about 3 hours of entertainment is a pretty good deal as far as I'm concerned.

If you grew up with 8, 16, and 32 bit RPGs and action RPGs, you'll really get a kick out of it.

I thought it was skyram..I cried

I gotta agree with ashes, Option 2 sounds like the least painful. Besides, can't they just check the steam client?

Wait a minute, we can cut the OP down to one line.

I don't know why you guys are all so hung up on games. Real hardcore Steam GabeNites are pumped for Summer Seal daily software deals. I need budgeting software for my budgeting software.

Didn't see this posted anywhere yet, but FTL is on sale for $2.49 from their website.

The page I've linked to says it's redeemable on Steam.

FTL
Awesome. Bought it last night, figuring it's worth it to buy straight from the dev even if it's later bundled. Even got a foil for my trouble (though, of course, that's the one card that still hasn't sold).

There are currently not any games scheduled to be released on the 27th. There are three games being released on the 28th, then nothing until July 8 (Civ 5 expansion) one game on July 11 (Toki Tori 2) and then nothing until the 23rd. So it seems plausible.
What no MK on july 3rd?
No wai MK coms ot MORTAL MONDAY SEPTEMBER 13TH

Pretty sure I got ALL of those and Skyram for $30 last December. ;)

New Vegas Ultimate for $7.50 is excellent if you don't have it.
I have around 113 hours w/ that game on one playthrough.

New Vegas + ALL DLC's at $7.50 = A STEAL.

Someone ninja'ed it already.

+1 like for the nice code-drop.
It was me, but it took some time to reply, since I wanted to give another code for someone else too :)
