Xbox One - General Discussion Thread

What I wonder is, how can Kinect 2.0 on the Xbox One gather data for advertisers?

To actually work, the Kinect would have to have a longer period of time where someone was watching an advertisement so it could gather data regarding people's reactions to the ad.  It won't work with the current dashboard, because the ads are just small pictures, and there's really no way of telling which one you are looking at, unless the Kinect can track incredibly subtle eyeball motions from ten feet away.

The problem is, who actually watches ads on the 360 outside of game trailers?

Where I could see Kinect being useful is in places like movie theaters, where it can read reactions in the dark while a few hundred people are essentially forced to experience a longer advertisement.

During TV, given that watching TV through the Xbox is a big feature MS has been touting. Probably not very useful for people who only use their X1 for gaming or streaming Netflix etc.

Im confused why you just can't hook up your current pc to your giant tv. Graphic cards have hdmi.
Some people don't want a PC in the living room (looks shitty) and don't have a non-hideous way (i.e. apartment so can't tear into walls etc.) to run a a long HDMI cable from the office to the TV in the living room/media room.

I'd definitely be interested in a steam box that was basically a console that had access to the Steam store since prices on digital games are so much better on there than PSN or XBL.

You can build a mini itx rig that can outperform a new gen machine, looks attractive and is about the size of a audio receiver. I built a PC for a friend with a bitfenix prodigy case and it's about the size of a subwoofer for a surround sound. He plays steam games and PC games at 1080p in his living room he also has a Bluray player and streams everything through it.

Yeah, I've seen those rigs and am slightly considering it.  Would have to get a new TV stand though as I couldn't fit another thing the size of a receiver in my current one.  I do want to get a nicer one sometime relatively soon anyway--preferably something with doors to keep things more out of sight.

My other gaming PC hesitation is that I really would prefer something that could be operated totally with a controller so I don't have to keep a wireless keyboard/mouse around and hassle with finding somewhere to keep them out of sight, but also handy.  Yes, I'm OCD about how near and organized things are in my home. :D

The Logitech F540. Got it back when it went for about $100 but you can find it at Fry's for $40 now.

http://www.frys.com/product/6423142?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

If you don't need surround sound then it's an amazing price for a great quality wireless headset.
Yeah I have them as well, too bad Logitech stopped making them. Well I was looking into a spdif converter, something like this

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004C4WPXA/ref=s9_simh_gw_p23_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0ZQX6553X254GQB1JDF9&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1630083502&pf_rd_i=507846

I think it should work. I don't know if you will get voice chat, but you should get sound from the xbox. I like to play on my pc monitor and my pc speakers are too loud at night. The only headset I have ever used are the F540s and they have been worth every penny.

Lmfao I know the feeling. He has a wireless keyboard/mouse, xbox remote and television remote on his coffee table. It's a big coffee table with a drawer so he hides it when he is using the xbox remote or just streaming

Isn't the steam box going to, at least out of the gate, basically be a streaming device? Or are we expecting all publishers to magically whip up some Linux ports of their games. I know Valve said they had AAA titles in the works, but I think it is going to be hard to get everyone on board. Valve is basically asking developers to code for yet another platform, but why? Valve isn't going to realistically drop Windows support anytime soon.

Steam box is going to be niche for a long time, if it even hits the market. The only thing it has going for it (in my opinion) is its streaming capabilities. All of those old games that are cheap during steam sales aren't going to get Linux ports and new games aren't going to go on sale right away either.

All this is very true. They need half life 3/portal 3/ tf3 call the platinum box to help push the steam OS. I know for sure I'm going to purchase another ssd to boot dual boot their OS.

I don't think that's necessary since the Logitech base isn't wired to the xbox at all, at least with my setup. I've got HDMIs from my 360 and ps3 to the tv, and then RCA audio out to the base station. This eliminates the need to switch inputs on the headset to go from xbox to ps3 since the headset is just playing any sound coming from the tv. Xbox chat works fine this way. Idk if this setup would work for ps3 chat though since I've never used it.

I guess its necessary for me since I game on my pc monitor most of the time.

so i'll round up a few articles from this week:

Info on Smartglass apps. Dead Rising 3 will have a mission tracker, real time map, and news ticker telling you where zombie outbreaks are happening around the city. Project Spark will "mirror" what the xbox one does. So if you want to create or play a full touch game, you can use smartglass to do so.

Turtle Beach headsets will not support surround sound on Xbox One at launch, community manager points to fix

“There’s a small firmware update Microsoft will have to issue once the Xbox One is live in the field to enable surround sound output via the controller. The headset won’t require any work and will be every bit as functional as the Xbox One allows. Once MS pushes the update live, everything will work exactly as intended. Until then, there may be a bit of limited functionality, but not to worry, it’s just a simple update to solve it.”

What is it with Microsoft? One step forward, two steps back all the time.

Can you play this with a controller or is it Kinect control only?
Not sure. Someone was trying to claim that KSR will play with either one, but, when you read the article he claimed to get the information from, all it said was that you could use the controller to do certain things like change character attributes and navigate menus. It did not say that you'd be able to play any of the actual games in KSR with a controller.

I agree that little gif says a lot for the potential of that game and is the reason I'll buy it, unless all the previews and reviews declare it a disaster.  Given that the first two K-Sports games were good, I don't see how this one could be worse than those, but we'll see.

Still, the wave runner minigame has SO much potential.

I have my headphones hooked up to my receiver and not directly to my system, so in theory they should still work, right? I primarily just use them for game audio and don't use the mic that much, so losing that until an adapter comes out isn't a big deal.

Yeah I can't imagine using your hands to do that will feel natural or intuitive in the least,

Xbox One is expected to outsell PlayStation 4 this holiday season – UK retail chain
Xbox One is expected to outsell PlayStation 4 this holiday season, at least according to UK chain John Lewis’ head tech buyer Jonathan Marsh.

ps4xboxone.png

Speaking with Trusted Reviews, Marsh said Xbox One has the edge due to its game line-up and Xbox Live service.

“We are expecting more interest in the Xbox One,” Marsh said. “We are stocking both the PS4 and the Xbox One but if we were to back one, we are thinking that Xbox One will appeal a bit more to our customers in terms of the experience it creates.”

Marsh said he feel the console will appeal more to the chain’s consumer base, and is also basing his opinion on what the firm has “experienced in the past” with Microsoft consoles.

Thanks, GI International.

Kinect season two was awful to me. I'm sure I wasn't the only one.
I agree that KS2 wasn't as good as the first, but I didn't think it was awful. If nothing else, it seems like the kinect controls in KS1 and KS2 were responsive. I guess what I was saying is that if KS-Rivals controls at least as good as those, it'll be good enough for me.

I played and enjoyed the hell out of Fable: Journey, which had your arms and hands upright for most of the game. If I can endure that, I think I can live with using my hands to control a virtual jet ski. We'll see.

The rock-climbing game, though, yeah I'm not sold on that one. :speaktothehand:

I would say in the UK yes. Aren't they getting a free game?

Let The Xbox One Pranking Begin

You can turn an Xbox One on (and off) using voice commands. Handy for the home, but in the workplace? There's room for pranks.

These tweets by Andreas Fredriksson, a senior engine programmer at the freshly-multiplatform Insomniac, are hilarious, because you don't need video to imagine exactly how it goes down.

Andreas Fredriksson @deplinenoise

Shouting "Xbox off" over the studio PA is already getting old.

Jeroen Ruigrok @ashemedai

@deplinenoise Does that actually work?

Andreas Fredriksson @deplinenoise
@ashemedai Sort of. Depends on noise & loudness it seems.

Looks like PS4 will have headset issues as well

I'm guessing most people will think your link is about the free FIFA since that's what you posted about.

Yeah my bad like crashburn said, I assumed it was a link about the Fifa pre-order.

Nah it's cool. I was just messing with you

Thats even worse than the Xbox 1 issue. They can't use blue tooth at all. They can only use usb headsets.

Eh I haven't been much of an online player the last several years so I don't know how much headset issues will matter for me on either system. I'm hoping this next gen will provide some fresh experiences or at least bring back some old ones (I'd love a new Phantom Dust or Crimson Skies for example) to get me back into online, I haven't seriously played since the Halo 3 days, it's hard to find good random people to play with, and most of my friends are on way different schedules than me so it's hard to get a game together.

I want a new Crimson Skies game so bad. Also a new The Suffering. I loved the first one. Crimson Skies could easily be an XBLA game for the next gen. Make it a $15-20 download. It was a Microsoft games studio game too which is what I don't understand. It was one of the top XBL games when XBL launched.

I'm with you on Crimson Skies, I loved that game. Another game from the early days of Xbox Live I would like to see would be MechAssault. I didn't care for the second one, but the first one was a blast to play online.

I didn't care for Crimson Skies.

But I do hope that as we get more and more digital games that we see more "b level" type games come out in the $15-20 range.

Seems like everything these days is big budget AAA titles or smaller budget $5-10 XLBA/PSN games.  Would love to see some b-level games that fall in the middle of those budgets and come out at $20ish digitally since there's clearly not a market for them at $60 on disc.

I think companies should remake Xbox games in HD and release them on XBLA for $10-20 if there aren't enough games in the series to do a hd best of collection type. Crimson Skies, Mech Warriors, Shenmu...those types of games.

Battlefield 1943 showed what a B-level game could be. It was only 3 maps but it was a lot of fun for $15. Hell a multiplayer only Crimson Skies release would be ok for me. I did enjoy the single player though

Lots of gems for the original XBox that still never made the 360 that I'd like to see come to the X1. Some being multiplatform of course... -

A *REAL* Kotor sequel, KOTOR 3. But I guess that will never happen.

Burnout, not Burnout Paradise But you know, Burnout Takedown style. Probably won't happen either, especially since a lot of that studio is gone after the last NFS.

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4.

Jade Empire sequel

Half Life 3 on consoles plz.

Rallisport Challenge 3 plz.

Bring back the *GOOD* Moto GP games.

Timesplitters anyone?

Phantom Dust Sequel

Mechassault. For real.

Otogi Sequel

Deathrow Sequel!

Voodoo Vince Sequel!

Kungfu Khaos sequel!

Sudeki Sequel!

Breakdown Sequel!

Shenmue 3 where are you? lol.

Hopefully the next Kingdom Underfire game comes out as well, and not just exclusive to PC/PS3/PS4.

Dare I say... Grabbed by the Ghoulies?

Lot's of XBox exclusives that people forget. Sega really put out a lot for the XBox In It's first year as well.

Well this gen kind of killed mid-level games along with making it it perception that if a game comes out at less than $60, it's a sub-par title, so you get plenty of games that come out at $60 which probably should've been in the $30-40 range, but that stigma is there.

Yep. But I think full digital releases could be a way around that since people but a lot of $10-15 xbla/PSN games. Maybe some mid-level games could sell well at $20 in digital only releases.
