PlayStation 4 - General Discussion Thread

Haven't seen it mentioned in here, but with PS4 games now on PS Store, it looks like its confirmed gamesharing is basically dead on PS4:

https://store.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/#!/en-us/cid=UP9000-CUSA00068_00-KNACK00000000000

"One-time license fee for play on purchasing account’s designated, primary PS4™ system and other PS4™ systems when signed in with purchasing account."
I was afraid of that in my post here responding to the quotes in this post

The policy is the same as Xbox One.

  • One account can share all purchased games with other accounts on your "Home" console. Offline or Online. PS+ features can be shared with non-PS+ accounts on your "Home" console according to Yoshida.
  • You can bring your content with you to as many other consoles as you like, as long as you stay logged in.

Basically, you'd have to setup secondary console first to make it "Home" console. Those (digital) games won't require sign-in. Then set up your primary console second and anytime you want to play a (digital) game on it you'll have to be signed in.

Very annoying even with the change of being able to have multiple accounts signed in at the same time.

PS4 demo kiosks rolling out today

Chances are many of you have yet to play PS4. That changes today.

Sony is rolling out the "Experience PlayStation" program today, which will place PS4 demo kiosks around the country. You'll be able to walk into select Sony Stores today to try PS4, with "thousands" more coming to other retail stores, like GameStop, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart.

Some of the games you'll be able to try on the PS4 kiosks include Knack, Octodad: Dadliest Catch, FIFA 14, and Contrast.

To find the nearest store with a PS4 kiosk, go here. And remember, more stores will be added later. You can also check out Xbox One early through Microsoft's One Tour.

Pretty good comprehensive look at Sony's exclusives:

PS4 vs Xbox One: Sony’s launch line-up is populous but whimsical
PS4 and Xbox One are just a few weeks away; if you haven’t already made up your mind, now’s the time. We kick off a close look at both consoles’ software line-up with Sony’s multitude of exclusives.

PS4: launch line up works with PlayStation’s strengths

Below you’ll find a list of titles known to be available for PlayStation 4 when it launches in North America on November 15 and in Europe on November 29. Over the next few days, we’ll take a look at the Xbox One’s line-up, as well as a hefty group of big-hitters shared by both platforms.

Going purely by numbers, Sony clearly has the advantage, but enough of its line up is composed of indies and ports of existing games that the extra titles may not carry as much weight with the core, early-adopter audience. On the other hand, those after a bit of diversity will be well-rewarded by the PS4, and the Xbox One lacks a really strong first-party exclusive like Halo to remind fans why Microsoft’s box has reigned supreme in North America this generation.

PlayStation has become something of an indie darling over the past year and its launch line-up reflects this. As such, it’s heavy on digital releases and whimsical experiences – but Sony has played it safe and packed in some hefty exclusives, too. This list does not include titles announced for Japanese PS4 launch but as yet unconfirmed for the west such as Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends and Yakuza Ishin.

20131016_knack.jpg

Basement Crawl – PlayStation favourite Bloober Team – whom we still have a soft spot for, since it’s the remains of Sadness developer Nibris – is back with another digital-only title. Basement Crawl is a maze-based multiplayer action game with a dark childhood aesthetic and gameplay inspired by Spy vs Spy and Bomberman.

Blacklight: Retribution – Zombie Studios is bringing its free-to-play shooter to PS4 after garnering reasonable success on PC. The multiplayer only sequel to Blacklight: Tango Down is looking pretty tasty on the new hardware.

Contrast – An indie also coming to PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, Contrast is an action-adventure platformer with bold aesthetic direction. It stars not one but two females, one of whom is a little girl, and its plot concerns a shattered marriage and imaginary friends. It has a stunning swing soundtrack and looks altogether glorious, actually.

Counterspy – One of three Sony-published indies announced before E3 this year, Counterspy is a Cold War-inspired sidescrolling spy action game also coming to PS3 and Vita. The PlayStation Blog had an early look at it but it’s gone fairly quiet since the PS4 reveal.

20131016_killzone_shadow_fall.jpg

DC Universe Online – Sony Online Entertainment’s free-to-play licensed superhero MMO is, of course, already available on PC and PS3, but the publisher is keen to further capitalise on its console success. And it has been a success, make no mistake; the PS3 version of DCUO is SOE’s fastest-growing business segment.

Divekick – A bit of an odd one, Divekick is both a parody and distillation of the fighter genre. It has just one move – the titular divekick – so instead of focusing on knowing combos battles boil down to the real skill of head-to-head fighting, namely anticipating and reacting to your opponent’s actions. It’s already out on PS3 and Vita and was recently passed through Steam Greenlight, but if you haven’t checked it out yet it’s really worth a look.

Doki-Doki Universe – The second entry in our indie trilogy, Doki-Doki Universe is a strange beast indeed. From the mind that created Toejam & Earl, and in the works since at least April 2012, it will have a free-to-play component with messaging and personality quizzes, plus premium DLC providing an “RPG/Simulation/Interactive Story” game in a “huge simulated living universe”. It’s also coming to PS3 and Vita, and you should probably check out its trailer, which is packed with adorable robots.

Driveclub – What needs to be said about Sony’s very sensible decision to include a racing game in a hardware launch? The frequently embarrassing Ridge Racer has thankfully gone into hiding, and Sony has instead mustered Evolution Studios for a new kind of racer – massively social and partially free-to-play. Racers do best on new consoles, since they’re mainly sold on graphics, and Driveclub looks incredibly shiny.

20131016_hohokum.jpeg

Flower – Yes, it’s a re-release, but a PlayStation home console without a single compatible thatgamejourney title should be a crime. Flower was the company’s break-out hit after the under-the-radar success of flOw, and presaged the long, troubled development of its incredible opus Journey. You play the wind. It’s pretty rad, and it’ll be interesting to see how much more lovely the PS4 version looks in comparison to the PS3 release.

Hohokum – The final member of the indie triumvirate hails from Honeyslug, the developer of Frobisher Says currently incubating inside SCE Santa Monica, just as thatgamecompany did. Hohokum is also coming to PS3 and Vita, and gets its colour from a collaboration with artist Richard Hogg. It aims to avoid gaming tropes like missions and failure, but does contain secrets and trophies. We’ve been waiting for this one for a while, as it’s been floating about the festival circuit for ages.

Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition – Warner Bros. and Sony are clearly having a bit of a mutual lovefest at the moment, as NetherRealm’s DC-licensed fighter is coming to both PS4 and Vita – and not Xbox One. We’re yet to see the next-gen version in action, unfortunately.

Killzone: Shadow Fall – Another stupidly obvious launch inclusion. Although Battlefield and Call of Duty provide plenty of shooty-shoot this November, that Sony managed to get a first-party shooter in time for new hardware but Microsoft didn’t is a puzzle. It’s a win for Guerrilla, though; Killzone: Shadow Fall may not quite have the chops to stand up to Halo 4 or Gears of War 4 but it’s a solid property from a great team, and a heck of a lot better choice than another Resistance.

20131016_driveclub.jpg

Knack – The man who led the hardware design of the PS4 has also made a game for it. Mark Cerny has been open about his admiration for games like Crash Bandicoot, which were simple but challenging, and hopes Knack will help address the lack of character action games in recent generations. That said, he wants it to be a launch title for the whole family, and to be easy enough to be someone’s first game, possibly thanks to local co-op.

Minecraft – Mojang’s sandbox finally makes the jump to PlayStation after years of waiting. Detractors may claim that everybody is over Minecraft, but they said the same thing when it came to Xbox 360, where it proceeded to sell gangbusters regardless. Sony’s growing acceptance of frequent updates and developer ownership may end up making the Sony version better. Minecraft is also coming to PS3 and Vita.

N++ – This one almost got lost in the noise of Sony’s sudden explosion of indie announcements. N++ represents the culmination of ten years of effort from developer Metanet Software, which has never quite felt satisfied with its platformer despite repeat iterations.

The Pinball Arcade – This Farsight Studios game is available on or on its way to practically everything except the Xbox One. We don’t know much about The Pinball Arcade, actually, but I’m going out on a limb to suggest it’s probably about Pinball. Gosh.

20131016_planetside_2.jpg

Planetside 2 – As mentioned above, Sony Online Entertainment is enjoying considerable success with its free-to-play console MMO adventures, and Planetside 2 is a bit of a no-brainer for PS4 since by all accounts it’s pretty splendid. It won’t have cross-play, unfortunately, but there is some possibility of character transfers and the UGC tools will come to the console.

Res0gun – Finnish developer Housemarque revived an Amiga classic for the PS3 with Super Stardust HD and thereby uncovered a lack in our lives we hadn’t even realised was there. Here’s hoping it does it again with Res0gun, a side scrolling shooter and spiritual successor to the Stardust series. It’s going to be free with PlayStation Plus on launch day.

Super Motherload – A procedurally-generated digging game, Super Motherload has been described by press as addictive and rewarding. It’s also coming to PS3, Mac and PC, and recently passed through Steam Greenlight.

Tiny Brains – A co-op puzzler from former Assassin’s Creed team members, Tiny Brains is also coming to PC and Xbox 360. All versions arrive simultaneously for North American PS4 launch.

20131016_warframe.jpg

War Thunder – Yet another free-to-play offering, War Thunder is a warplanes MMO from Gaijin Entertainment (not to be confused with Gaijin Games of Bit.Trip fame). The PC version is currently in beta with 3 million users, and the PS4 release will have cross-play from the get go. In fact, it’s not coming to Xbox One because Microsoft wouldn’t allow cross-play.

Warframe – The Darkness 2 developer Digital Extremes describes Warframe as a space ninja action game. It’s a free-to-play, third-person co-op shooter with procedurally generated environments, unique classes and lots of different customisations to unlock. It has an interesting sci-fi story and a sleek, organic aesthetic.

Tune in tomorrow and Friday for a look at the competition as well as games headed to both consoles. Launch line up shouldn’t be your only consideration when choosing a console, of course; both systems have loads of exclusives and third-party titles coming during their launch windows and beyond.

Aww, watch dogs was what I was planning to get at launch. Oh well, maybe I'll just stick to whatever PS+ gives me for a few weeks.

Have you guys seen the trailer for NBA 2k14 for PS4?!?!?!?!  OMG!!!  First game I have truly said now that is next -gen besides maybe Watch Dogs and Killzone...  You have to check it out... Was going to get two games at launch, but after the trailer... NBA it is!

Fun fun .... Love the controller. Played a little of Knack, FIFA and Contrast.

Took forever for that guy to get done though. Thought at one point he was never going to leave.

Are there any AAA launch titles that are understandable/enjoyable to play without playing the previous games in the series? It looks like everything is a sequel. I haven't played any of these games except Killzone 2, which I did not really follow it's story.

I think AC is the only one with important continuity and they seem to be making that an entry point for newbies as well.

Drive Club delay official, hope this isn't the start of a trend...

Sony confirms DriveClub delay, game will miss PS4 launch
Following reports earlier this week, Sony has confirmed that DriveClub will miss PS4′s launch. The Evolution Studios racer has been delayed into early 2014, as the team “requires more time in order to deliver on their vision.”

20130517_driveclub.jpg

The news comes via a post on the PlayStation Blog from President of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida.

It reads: “SCE Worldwide Studios and the team at Evolution Studios have made the difficult decision to delay the release of DRIVECLUB and DRIVECLUB PlayStation Plus Edition until early 2014.

“This decision also affects PlayStation Plus members‘ Instant Game Collection for launch. To be clear, DRIVECLUB PlayStation Plus Edition will still be part of the Instant Game Collection when it is released. For the PS4 launch, in addition to Resogun, I’m pleased to announce that Contrast, the highly anticipated game from Compulsion Games will also be available to PlayStation Plus members for free as part of Instant Game Collection.

“We understand that the delay is disappointing news, but can assure you that the reason we have made this decision is to ensure that when DRIVECLUB launches, it will realize the next gen racing vision.

“DRIVECLUB is a really ambitious racing title and the game is looking stunning. The extra time we’re giving the team means the visuals and overall experience are only going to get better. We can assure you that it will be worth the wait.”

The news deals a real blow to the PS4 launch line-up, following Ubisoft’s announcement that Watch Dogs has also slipped. In terms of next-gen grunt, PS4 will now only have Killzone: Shadow Fall and Knack to show for itself. The loss of a racer is particularly difficult, as not only are they staples of a next-gen console release, but Xbox One has Forza Motorsport 5 ready to go.

the story to killzone is pretty irrelevant.

Rumor:

Drive Club is delayed until 2014. If true this is crazy. I thought this was going to be the PS+ game (slimmed version).

I'm actually more interested in Contrast than I am in a watered down racer, so that works for me :v
Yep - I played both at PAX - I'm much happier having Contrast free as I probably would have bought that unlike Drive Club. I'll certainly give Drive Club a chance when it comes out but I'm actually pretty happy with how this turned out.

However, in general terms this is not good news for Sony with two of the bigger launch games now delayed.

So does this make the PS4 exactly like the 360 was? Meaning that eventually (much later this gen when I feel like getting a second PS4 for multiplayer with the kids), I have to buy all the stuff I want my kids to be able to play on one console, but then use a second one for myself? That is pretty much how I handled the 360 until I got rid of the second one a few months ago.

If so, it certainly isn't as nice as the PS3 (where my kids could play on either system) but is better than nothing.

Interesting minor factoid: the review embargo for the PS4 version of Assassin's Creed IV will be the same day as the current gen embargo, October 29th. I was one of the U.S. review event attendees and we were allowed to record PS4 footage with HDCP turned off = 1080P PlayStation recordings.

Am I the only one who is going to really try to only buy used this generation? :twoguns:

Prices drop so fast, that it is just to hard to justify the 59.99 price tag anymore.

Unless Amazon gives a 20.00 credit for a 59.99 game I will be making a point to only be used.

Also sense digital full games are going to be 59.99 as well, I will not be buying any, Will wait for PS+ games to be free to play.

Digital full games would need to be half the price for me to even consider buying them at release.

I'm buying used less because as you said, they drop pretty fast, just wait for a sale on most, digital or physical. I've passed up a lot of recent releases because I have plenty of games to play so might as well wait for a drop/sale. Just don't have the time/budget anymore for something that sits on my shelf for awhile.

Yeah, I just mostly don't buy games at launch and just wait for them to hit $40 or less. I don't do competitive online, so there aren't really games I NEED to have day one. And I sell everything after beating as I'm not a collector and rarely replay games. So that gets my costs down to a level I can live with given my lack of free time and diminishing interest in gaming.

Agree minus the interest. Still interested, just way less time to devote to it.

I buy a good mix of used and new, dont really care that much if a game is one or the other and usually trade in most of my games after im done playing them. I buy a few games new on day one, but just certain titles I cant wait to play like GTA V. Usually just wait for either sale, for it to be on AWD at a decent price, or buy used from GF.

Thanks to Sony this trend should continue to exist. The used game market is what drives down the prices for new games. Its the reason why 2-3 months after release you can get a new copy of a lot of games for 40 bucks or less.

The delay of Watch Dogs is a real bummer as that was my PS4 launch game. Now I guess I'm stuck with CoD or BF4 and nether of those jump out at me the same way.

Taking it a step further, probably not going to even buy games at all. Sticking to redbox and whatever they offer up on PS+. Just can't justify game acquisitions anymore; when I sold off my PS3 & games, I had probably played 10 of the 25+ games I dumped. Not enough time.

I was curious about what they are going for on Ebay. Looks like they are selling between $550-$600 for launch PS4 consoles. Since Watchdogs got delayed, and nothing else is really catching my eye right away. One part of me is like, I should go for it, drop ship from my amazon order and make a little profit and the other part of me is thinking, asking for more than cost is kind of douchy.

Well on Ebay it's going to be people looking for a profit, unless you can't find one in stores and are dying to get one, I'd just wait til they are readily available.

Well, I'm decided to pay it foward, I am going to let my friend have it at cost since there is nothing grabbing me since the few delay announcements.

I might end up being one of those guys. I just bought a replacement PS3 this weekend and I now have like 15 games that I haven't finished. Combine that with the fact that I work 60+ hours a week, and I really have no use for a PS4. I guess I'll try to see if any buddies want to buy it from me.

Renting doesn't work well for me as it's rare that I can finish a game in a couple of days. So I'm fine buying I'm just going to strictly stick to buying one game at a time and only getting a new one when it's beaten and sold off. As well as taking advantage of ps+ games as well of course. I may start using redbox occasionally for some 10 or less hour games if I have a free weekend to blow through them though.

I've been able to do that with a few titles like Bioshock Inifinite and Tomb Raider-Just rented them and rushed through them in a couple days. I have a video store that gets like 99% of the latest games and it's not in massive financial trouble like Blockbuster so it should be around for awhile.

Yeah it's just hard for me to find two or three days to mostly just game between work, chores/errands, the fiancé, friends and other hobbies.

But I could probably knock a game or three a year out that way when the fiancé is out of town, if I'm not swamped with work at the same time anyway.

But just for the 6-10 hour games. I doubt I could do Bioshock Infinite like that as I'm pretty sure that was at least 15 hours for me and I just can't game that much in 2 or three days so I'm better of buying and selling when beating. That one I wanted to hold on to for the DLC though.

right there with ya, I end up getting up for work 3 hours early just to get in some time to play my games... otherwise I get Monday nights and that is it!  Was suprised I beat GTA V in so little time.  First GTA game I have been able to beat!  Love the new checkpoints system!

Flower, Flow, Sound Shapes and Escape Plan coming to PS4 as Cross-Buy with other Platforms. (Own them on one Playstation, have them on all.)

http://youtu.be/39pK2MV_sfs

what are the details on the cross buy is it if I buy them when PS4 launches or do can I retroactively get them if I have them all?
If you have Flower, Flow, Sound Shapes or Escape Plan, then you have them for all the Playstations they are on. I have Flow and Flower on PS3, so I also have it for PSV and PS4. (Escape Plan is only PSV and PS4)

It sounds like they are really rushing Killzone in order to have SOMETHING for launch, it won't have a few things I would think are standard for a big FPS game:

Killzone: Shadow Fall has no multiplayer vehicles at launch, co-op, or split-screen
by Steve Watts, Oct 21, 2013 1:00pm PDT

Killzone Shadow Fall is a marquee PlayStation 4 launch title, ticking the "first-person shooter" box that comes with a new console. A new Q&A with game director Steven Ter Heide sets expectations accordingly, outlining just what the game will and won't do.

Multiplayer will be running on dedicated servers. The touch pad will be used to bring up menus in multiplayer, and the dropdown melee attack we've seen in the trailers will be a kill option against human opponents too.

Unfortunately, the "won't" list is a bit more substantial. The Q&A reveals that it won't have a co-op mode, though Guerrilla plans to release a wave-based co-op mode post-launch. The game also won't sport split-screen support, and the studio has no plans to have connectivity or bonuses with the Vita game Killzone: Mercenary.

Finally, at launch at least, multiplayer won't have any vehicles available. "We wanted to ensure that player-created, custom Warzones work on all multiplayer maps," Ter Heide said, "and the inclusion of vehicles would have introduced too many new variables and exceptions to guarantee this." At the very least, DLC maps will be released for free.

I can't actually fault anyone for doing this though because I would have done it if I didn't promise it to a friend at cost. He got PS4 fever a little too late whereas I preordered as soon as the price was annouced at E3.

Killzone has always been mostly infantry until killzone 3 where they added the jetpacks and exoskeletons. The co-op stuff is how they will make money since map packs will be free.

It seems like everything is being rushed at launch for the PS4. Dear god I hope Injustice comes at launch or I may not have a game for the system I am paying $400 for, lol.

I'm getting my PS4 in December, my company has a 20% off discount it gives us for one weekend and I'm just gonna get mine using that. For those getting it early have fun and let us know how smashing the system is..... how good does it stream MLP

It sounds like they are really rushing Killzone in order to have SOMETHING for launch, it won't have a few things I would think are standard for a big FPS game:
While it is unfortunate Killzone won't be getting more time in the cooker, I can't fault them for stripping out features. It's better to cut back the scope to a reasonable level and deliver a solid experience for what you have. Trying to develop an "uber" game to compete directly with Call of Duty is a waste of time. If they can deliver a decent single-player campaign for Killzone, that will be enough for a launch title.

It's a little distressing what some people consider to be "standard" for an FPS these days.

Still debating Knack will probably wait for reviews as I have it and BF4 reserved at a different place than my PS4.

After watching the videos I have to say to me I am looking forward to Blacklight the most of all of the shooters albeit it being F2P it looks to be the most fun MP wise.

Every time I see a video of Knack I just feel like meh, it looks like I played it before. Blacklight isn't bad, it's been available on PC for quite some time now, but it's good to see the PS4 is getting it.

Most of the impressions on Knack are not great, like it's more a showcase of system capabilities (like particle effects) than a fully-realized solid game.
