Anime & Manga Thread Vol. 2: Za Warudo!!!

I hear Conan is doing very well since Funimation has episodes available for digital download (I know it's a top seller on Xbox Live). What are the chances this movie will be picked up?
As long as episode sales are good FUN will pick it up. I'm sure they already have it in the back burner.

Probably depends on sales of the S.A.V.E. sets and the Fujiko Mine series. FUNi has already said they have no plans to continue the series.

Part of it is definitely Anno wanting to add cool stuff to the Evas, though a lot of it was introduced in various video games and other spinoffs. He may also want to subvert the usual compilation movies anime usually does, which is likely a big reason why the movies have made a gazillion dollars, so much that they delayed Movie 4 to get more.

As for Kaworu, he had one episode and a couple scenes in Shinji's head. Pretty much every other Eva incarnation introduces him far earlier, some right from the start. It's only natural he would appear earlier in the movies.
I agree adding him would earlier is okay but to bring so much of the story up front is too much. There is no reason now for him not to go down to Lilith and end it since there is no EVAs in working order. Of course they drew it out with a lame excuse.
The ones he appears early is about the characters interactions n progress, so those are very much more of a retelling.
The movies make so much BC fans get to see some of the most beautifully redone fight scenes, then get the hype up to see what they did next. I thought Movie 1 rifle scene was beautiful. The last reason is anime is much more popular now than the 90s. You couldn't go to Best Buy and get it like now. So many have never seen NGE.

Sadly the chances are pretty slim. The Lupin III vs. Detective Conan TV special never got picked up, and the last Detective Conan movie to make it over here was The Phantom of Baker Street and that was over 3 years ago.

Funimation did pick up the Fujiko series so that's a good sign.

It's just really hard to say at this point. If the movie does well in Japan, Detective Conan digital sales are good for FUNi, and the Fujiko series sells good here in the states, I'd say there's a decent chance it could happen.

The S.A.V.E. sets have been out for a while now, so I'm not sure they would have that much influence. I think how big the digital sales are between now and the time the movie comes out will be more important. And of course the success of the Fujiko series has a role as well.

And in related Lupin news, Hulu just put up the first 20 episodes of Lupin III: Part III with subs.

I believe this is the first time that the "Pink Jacket" Lupin series has made it here to the states through legal means.

I didn't even know Hulu had all of Part I and a little over half of Part II, so I'm probably going to be all over those for the foreseeable future. Now if only they could get the other 70+ episodes of Part II....

Discotek seems to be nabbing up most of the Lupin stuff. They released the first series as well as Green vs. Red and Episode Zero. I wouldn't be surprised if they have Series 2 and 3.

I don't know, it seems like that this attention to Case Closed is leading to something. Maybe they'll release subtitled episodes from where the dub left off or they'll pick up the live action movie?

And thanks for the Hulu news on Lupin.

The Case Closed sets are apparently doing well enough to make it to goHastings Top 100 Anime list, if that means anything.

The first special was released at a time when not only was Case Closed floundering, but the Lupin franchise was pretty much dead in the US. The latter is definitely having a revival here.

I don't know if I should smile or groan at Jaco the Galactic Patrolman suddenly becoming a prequel to Dragonball in the last chapter.

I watched the first episode yesterday. It seems interesting enough. I liked it and it seems to be one of the animes people are looking forward to the most for the fall season.

So it's been a while, but figured I'd post a quick update on what I've recently watch/am currently watching:

First and foremost I never got to post about Steins;Gate which I watched a few weeks back. All I can say is it could very well be my new all time favorite anime, and anyone that hasn't seen it needs to ASAP. The first three or so episodes were a bit slow, but after that it gets so good, so I'd recommend giving it a few episodes before dropping it if it doesn't click with you right away. Highly Recommend!

Next up I finished season 1 of The Melancholy of Haruhi Sarizuma and rather enjoyed it despite (maybe unconsciously because of) its many quirks and oddities, though now I'm faced with the question of whether or not to watch season 2. I've heard a lot of bad things about it and don't want to ruin the series for me because of it, but still I liked S1 so it's only natural I'd continue the series. Anyone want to chime in, feel free.

Third I finally watched Baka & Test S2. I'd say I enjoyed it more than S1 actually, as (and I'm sure this will be a point of contention for some) it seemed to focus less on the school battle system and more on its hilarious characters. It's been a while since I've laughed so often and so hard an anime, and would certainly recommend it to fans of the first season. The only thing I didn't care for was how the female characters had suddenly become rather mean to everyone, going so far as to actually torture the guys at parts. I get this was for comic relief, but I would have liked them to be a bit more natural and less predicable. Maybe I'm alone in feeling this way, but it's one thing I'd like to change should a third season be in the works.

As for what I'm currently watching, my time is mostly being taken up by A Certain Scientific Railgun. I'm honestly not sure what it is about this show I like, but I've been marathoning it for the last few days and eating it up. I watched an episode of A Certain Magical Index a while back and it didn't do much for me, but I may have to give it another chance when I'm done with Railgun at least to get a few of the references and recurring characters I'm starting to see pop up.

I'm also watching Gosick, which is a pretty entertaining Sherlock Holmes sort of series, and Shakugan no Shana which I'm not quite sold on, but have heard good things about so will try and stick with it a little longer. A few other series might creep in hear and there, but that's about it for me right now.

Sorry for the wall of text by the way, it sorta got away from me ^_^

Finished watching Pocket Monsters the Origin. Quite interesting. The Pokemon themselves only spoke in generic growls and roars and only knew attacks it would learn by that point in the games. The Poke Balls use all new sound effects and animation from the anime and explode into the Pokemon like the games. Red also did all the in game events, like battle the Nerd in Mt. Moon, beating the Rocket Gang in Pokemon Tower and Silph Co., got the bike voucher, and received the Poke Flute to wake up Snorlax from Mr. Fuji. He even got the Lapras from the Silph worker. There were even VS. Splashes. Red vs. Sakaki (Giovanni) being inside an office was a nice touch too. And for the first time ever, TMs and HMs make an animated appearence! Amusingly, they look like floppy disks. I did like that they tied Mewtwo's creation with the MegaEvolution Stones.

The animation was a mixed bag. For some reason, all the building interiors and most of the outside backgrounds were CG, which was very distracting. And Episode 2's animation was just pitiful. One nice touch is that at the end of the episode, Red saves the game and then continues at the start of the next. Also, the recaps use the text boxes from the original games with the original quotes. The credits being on an OG GameBoy background was nice, but I would have liked it better if they made it part of the screen.

Sadly, the only Gym Battles shown outside a recap were Takeshi (Brock) and Sakaki. The other Gym Battles were given 10 second recaps. Even Red vs. the Elite Four was reduced to recaps. Hell, the final Red vs. Green battle was essentially just Blastoise vs. Charizard, the rest of the battle was skipped, although the battle itself was freaking awesome, much better thab Satoshi vs. Shigeru, which partially makes up for it.

The biggest problem was the main one I feared: They rushed through everything. This seems like 4 random episodes from a new series.

For those interested, Red was shown with the following Pokemon at different points: Charmander/Charmeleon/Charizard, Spearow, Metapod (which actually helped against Takeshi), Rattata, Nidoran Male, Jolteon, Victreebel, Kabutops, Lapras, Snorlax, Hitmonlee, Dodrio, Scyther, Persian, Arbok, Tentacool, Pikachu, Chansey, Tauros, Gengar, Rapidash, Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, and Mewtwo, though he ended up capturing all 150 Pokemon at the end. Red's Hall of Fame team was Charizard, Lapras, Dodrio, Scyther, Persian, and Jolteon. MegaCharizard X was the only post-Gen I Pokemon shown. Charizard's moveset was Slash, Fire Blast, Swift, and Mega Punch. Sadly, Mew was not in a truck. Red took 35 hours and 46 minutes to finish his quest.

Overall, it was a pretty good special, but it makes me wish it had been a full-on 26-episode series.

Sunrise has announced that they're going to simulcast the new Gundam show "Gundam Build Fighters" with English subs starting this Monday, October 7th.

Keep an eye on Gundam.info if anyone has any interest in watching it.

As I mentioned yesterday, here's the English sub for episode 1 of Gundam Build Fighters:

I had no expectations going in and had read nothing about the show. Was not expecting "Gundam meets Angelic Layer." The story is crap, but the battles were awesome enough that I don't really care. I do hope it gets a proper intro though.

While Ramba Ral being the referee was cute, it should have been Stalker. And he should appear every episode out of nowhere like the Medabots referee.

Not a fan of Build Strike, but that may be because we already have a gajillion Strike variants already. At least it doesn't have blasted skis.

I do hope whenever the remake of the original Gundam gets off the ground they use the design of the White Base from the opening prologue here. That was a sweet design.

Let's see. As of late, I have finished up watching Future Diary and also Attack on Titan and S3 of The World God Only Knows from last season. All were great in their own right (Although I wish the OVA for Future Diary that just came out would have been included in Funi's releases).

I do usually pick at 3 anime from the current season to watch while they are airing, and I think this season I'll actually do 4. I think they are going to be Golden Time, Little Busters: Refrain, Kill La Kill and Log Horizon. (Especially looking forward to Golden Time!!!)

And a question to you all. What did you think of Watamote?  I actually thought it was well done overall. I made it through 7 episodes, but I did drop it just for the fact it made me extremely uncomfortable (Never has happened with me and a show before)

I am currently watching Future Diary. I am only through the 5th episode, but I am enjoying it a lot right now.

I've watched the first episode of around 8(?) shows this season. I'll continue to watch most of them, but the one that stands out the most for me is Golden Time. I am very excited to see where that goes. For a close second and third this year, I like both Coppelion and the Outbreak Company.

I only watched the first episode of Watamote last season and decided it wasn't for me. The main character was a little too socially awkward, that I couldn't find the humor in it.

I enjoyed Watamote. I thought it was pretty good for something that didn't seem very interesting over all.

Currently I have 16 animes on my to watch list from this season and that seems like a lot. So far highlights of the five or six that I have started are Kill la Kill, Kyoukai no Katana, and Tokyo Ravens. Diabolik Lovers is awful so far, but it only has 12 episodes planned and each episode is about 15 minutes so I'll probably just watch all of it unless I really don't like it.

If you like that, you'll like school rumble, its as funny or funnier (at least in my opinion).

Any watching the new season of Freezing?

Started watching Persona 4 anime, then will get on with Sword Art Online. Enjoying Persona so far - makes me want to play the game even more.

For what it's worth I've loved what I've watched of Persona 4 and really DIDN'T like SAO (I still can't seem to get myself to watch the last three episodes). Take that as you will I suppose.

Episode one of Kill La kill was a mixed bag, but I had expected it to be a lot worse. I also watched Little Witch Academia and that was a lot of fun.

Don't know if there are any JoJo fans here, but an anime adaption of Part 3, Stardust Crusaders, has been green-lit.

Time for a possibly unpopular opinion. I just saw Shinsekai Yori and it was the worst thing I have ever seen in recent times. And I just saw Evangelion. Just nonsense. People were heralding this thing and I thought it would be a decent post-apocolyptic anime. It was an apocolyptic nightmare all right, just that the "post" part had nothing to do with it. If you haven't seen it, don't. Run away!

And awesometown, it might be too late to stop you, but if you haven't gone though Mirai Nikki yet, stop now. It's just as bad as Shinsekai Yori. Possibly worse.

Well, I'm just about halfway done with it now. I'm still fine with it, and I won't leave it unfinished, but I'll keep that in mind. I do love weird bat-crazy stuff (mostly).

I'd never actually heard of this, but thanks for the heads up on it (even if it's an uncommon opinion, there is something to be said if it was THAT bad to you). Side note: is there any post-apocalyptic anime you would recommend? It's not a sub-genre I watch often, but more because of not knowing where to start than lack of interest.

just saw the second episode i like the intro and the battles are good. Looking forward to the different designs, definitely going to keep up with the show. Also i hope they continue with Ramba Ral just showing up out of nowhere, just like in the second episode

Watched the first two episodes of Pokemon XY. The animation was gorgeous, about the same level as Origins. I thought Ash's beginning excitement was more believable than his first day in Unova, and his first battle was more believable too.

Apparently the writers are splitting up the starters like they did in Hoenn. Since Ash got Froakie, and it's not the comic relief like Piplup and Oshawott, it will be Ash's first Water-type starter to evolve.

The only really bad parts were Team Rocket still using their OG motto instead of making a new one and the intro song was kind of boring.

I can't tell if Gundam Build Fighters is celebrating or making fun of Gunpla obsessives, especially with the bar full of Zeon LARPers.

Got around to watching Kill la Kill finally. Had my doubts after I saw some thoughts in regards to the show.

But after watching a couple episodes, I can say, although it is not what I watch, and is stupid.......I am thoroughly enjoying it haha

Holy shit! Okay so I don't know how many of you here have been keeping an eye on Space Dandy, but it's an anime series being made by Shinichiro Watanabe (the same director of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo) and studio BONES.

Now here's the kicker, Toonami just announced they're going to be WORLD premiering the series. So we're getting the anime even before Japan does. It's starting in January. To say I'm fucking pumped for this is an understatement.

Toonami also announced that in December for three weeks in a row they're going to do movie specials. They've haven't announced what movies though.

And to think, 2 years ago AS Saturday was Bleach and an anime dumping ground.

I think this is justification for Toonami to move up earlier in the night.

Toonami is actually going to move up starting in January, but only by 30 minutes. They're just expanding the programming block from six to six and a half hours to accommodate Space Dandy.

I just hope this gets the support it deserves. This is a pretty big move and they picked the perfect series to do it with considering how popular Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo were on the channel.

I'm still waiting for D. Gray Man to update, but I guess it's not that big of a deal. I'm not /that/ into it. I'd like for Beet the Vandel Buster to update also, but it's been 7 years since the illustrator got sick. I tried to watch the anime, but that dub was horrid and all the encodes I found were god awful.

Rabbit Doubt? I could've sworn Judge was finished.

Yeah I thought so too, it's the people that do scanlations who stopped abruptly I think.

Yeah, mangaupdates says that they're only partway through the scanlations for volume 4 out of 6.

I started it but I didn't think it was nearly as entertaining as Rabbit Doubt, and it probably didn't help that I was a bit burnt out on horror manga. I haven't read much lately, so maybe I'll check it out.

To follow up on my last update of sorts, I finished season 1 of A Certain Scientific Railgun and Shakugan no Shana, and overall liked them both. I enjoyed the first half of ACSR a lot more than the second though, as it felt like it did the thing a lot of animes do and introduce characters in a single episode for no apparent reason, and just becoming super melodramatic during the final episodes.

Shakugan I actually had the opposite experience with, as it took me a while to get into it but then I was hooked. It had some of the typical "characters spinning their wheels" moments, but by and large I thought it was great and am looking forward to the next two seasons, whenever I get around to them.

Now I'm trying to decide what to watch next. I might continue Gosick, but for some reason I'm not particularly compelled to, or maybe start something new. If you've seen my past posts and feel you've gotten a taste of what I enjoy, I'd be open to some suggestions (preferably something I can stream so I can watch it sooner than later) ^_^

I'm not entirely sure about your tastes, but you might want to check out Mawaru Penguindrum. That was pretty enjoyable for me, and it's only 24 episodes.

I finished Monster a couple hours ago, and that was pretty interesting. Pretty well thought out manga. I've been meaning to finish it for about 2 years. I was alternating between reading Monster and watching Kuroko no Basket, and Kurobas is getting pretty interesting.

So since I finished Monster, I'm moving onto Oyasumi Punpun. Jesus, this manga is weird.

I started reading Monster a few days ago, I thought it started out slow but it finally got me a little more interested in it.

I also am reading a manga called Sanctuary, it's about Politics and the Yakuza. I love the art drawn into it, but the story is kinda so-so... So far.

Well aren't you lucky that you aren't that into it. I on the other hand am pulling out my hair waiting for the lazy author to continue.

It's pretty good. I started the anime about two years ago but 70 episodes wasn't really working out. So then I started the manga, and I'm not quite sure what happened, but I managed to drop it somehow. I'm glad I picked it up again.

Yeah, I believe you were talking about it earlier. I added it to my to read list, but if the plot's iffy, then I might take it off.

It's been like a year since it updated. I haven't really noticed its absence since I'm reading about 20 other mangas. :whistle2:?

I'm through the first volume of Oyasumi Punpun and it's really interesting so far. People have told me it turns into 'poetry' around volume three. The art is fantastic.
