Xbox One - General Discussion Thread

I think the one element Ryse will have going for it is that it'll show off the system's graphic capabilities probably far better than, say, Knack is going to for the PS4.
Graphics just aren't going to be enough to sell people on the XBox One. And while Ryse might excel when it comes to graphics, I seriously doubt that most consumers are going to find the general premise and presentation of that game appealing. It's a little unsettling to jump into a game where every minute there seems to be another brutal murder. Very pretty brutal murders aren't the best showpiece for the XBox One, no matter how pretty those murders are.

No, as far as games go, I think Forza is going to be the big showpiece. It's going to have some fantastic visuals as well, it's about cars, which most people at least like, and it's going to make better use of the XBox One's rumbling triggers. (tactile analog feedback for acceleration and braking is going to be great)

And as I've stated numerous times, the XBox One's interface is going to be the biggest selling point early on. If Microsoft can just get it working as promised, there are any number of consumers who would be willing to pick one up just for that. (and use it as a game machine as a pleasant bonus)

lets be honest after this first wave of die hards it will come to name brand. months Down the line people wll be like oh man it's the new xbox i should upgrade my 360 to buy the new xbox or well my friends upgraded to new xbox so should i.

this is a reason why when people say oh ms is done xbox one will fail i just lol and say their name brand is too big to fail.

No brand is too big to fail.

But Microsoft's real recent failings haven't been in their video game division. While I think the XBox One is going to have difficulty on the international market, I think it's going to be quite competitive in the U.S. Microsoft's recent problems have been with Windows 8. The launch of their most recent OS was one giant facepalm.

And I maintain that it isn't going to be the XBox brand that bolsters the XBox One. Video game fans aren't nearly as loyal as many seem to think. Just ask Sony. A lot of the Playstation faithful jumped ship for the Wii, of all things. Consumers are fickle, and far too easy to sway with trends. It isn't unusual for them to follow style rather than substance.

The XBox One's media integration might seem nonsensical to a lot of gamers and internet enthusiasts, but I think it will help move product for the system's first several years. I've personally met and talked with numerous people in their 30s to 50s who are planning on buying one just for that purpose. These are older people with stable jobs and plenty of disposable income. The kind of consumer who can afford to drop $500 on a new system.

I'm not saying Ryse is a system seller by any means. More that I could see buyers of the Xbox One checking it out -- IMO even if it's flawed, I see it doing more for the system than, say, Knack is going to do for the PS4.

You make it sound like you're playing a serial killer. It's a large-scale combat game, not much different than other hack 'n slash titles, in a historical setting. People have gone to see movies like TROY and they're hugely successful. It's not exactly like they've made another SAW game here lol. That said, I'm not expecting much out of it, just that if you are looking at the overall launch line-up, it's an interesting title with a unique setting.

problem with windows 8 is that people will not give it a chance. I for one love windows 8 and i refuse to update to 8.1 because i don't want the start button back. Windows 8 at this point runs much better then windows 7 and i love all the aps and for gaming it runs games much better then 7 with almost zero game crashes.

For starters, Troy is not a good movie. A more apt comparison would be the HBO series "Rome," which is both quite good and quite brutal.

The problem with Ryse, and its associated brutality is the context. You aren't fighting zombies, or monsters, or even Nazis. You're fighting enemies that are unmistakably people. Anyone with a passing knowledge of history can point out the problem here. Rome was not very nice. Historically, they were known for marching in, conquering people, and then enslaving them. So at the end of the day, in Ryse you are playing as the villain. And you are slaughtering people who clearly have inferior equipment, support, and training, over and over.

This sort of thing is bad enough in modern games that involve shooting. At least most of those go out of their way to lionize or validate the protagonist in some way. In Ryse you are playing the bad guy, and the primary method of combat is face-stabbing, over and over. It's like Spec-Ops: The Line, only without the clever meta-narrative or implications of spiraling insanity. It's no wonder that most of the reviews mention getting tired of the combat, despite the variety in animation. This scenario makes it really hard for any decently sane individual to feel good about playing through it.

I dunno about feeling bad, most people have played it said the brutality just gets old and boring real quick.

That's your opinion. Fact is that Troy made $500 million worldwide. Even if you didn't like it, it was quite successful, and when I look at the visuals for this game, to me it's plainly influenced by that movie.

It's a video game, not part of a history class. Whether it is fun to play or not remains to be seen -- and by all accounts the combat becomes repetitious -- but to me the game will sink or swim based on its play mechanics, not the morality of the story. I highly doubt most people picking up and playing the game are going to be worrying about the social consciousness element and "associated brutality" of it.

I actually have played the game. It was the one title that I waited in line to sample at PAX. I would have preferred to try out one of the other games, but I was with a friend who was interested in Ryse, and I prefer not to be too pushy. So Ryse it was.

First you say that the visuals will be the selling point, now you think the play mechanics will be the deciding factor? Pick one and stick with it, don't waffle back and forth. And it's not the morality of the story that I'm concerned with. It's the subtle psychological effect of the play mechanics.

A game like Mortal Kombat is able to skate on this sort of issue because everything surrounding it is ridiculous. The story is crazy and over-the-top, the outfits are mad, everything is a cartoonish exaggeration. In Ryse this is not the case. Even the "savage" enemies covered in mud and war paint are still very clearly human. And it's easy to infer from context that they do not necessarily want to be charging at you screaming. The realism of the graphics and presentation work against the game in this case. The first time you kill an enemy can be exhilarating. But with repetition the rote nature of the game mechanics free your mind to start wondering why you are slaughtering what are quite clearly people.

A game with identical mechanics would have worked much better in a different setting, with different antagonists. It's not a matter of the blood and gore. It's the nagging doubt that creeps into the players mind, the sure knowledge that they are role-playing an amoral monster. There's nothing to feel good about playing Ryse.

Are you this argumentative in real life, or just online? All I said was that I think the game could generate some sales among Xbox One owners if it has solid graphics -- there will be some gamers who might want to check it out for that reason. Given that most people have said the game is repetitious (like many people who played it), that will be its main selling point I'm guessing. Of course play mechanics determine really whether a game is going to function or not, but if Ryse doesn't have that going for it, then graphically it might have some appeal to certain people. At least it has that going for it opposed to something being so horribly reviewed as Knack on the PS4 (which was my original point). That's it. That's all I wrote. I never said it was a system seller, never said anything other than that, which you've implied in several posts.

I find it interesting that this game upset you so much. Again, I don't think the majority of people out there are going to be morally analyzing their actions playing a game like this. Maybe they will, and they'll feel like you, but I doubt it. People who play COD online have had to play as Germans or "insurgents" (or other "wrong sides") in MP matches for years -- I haven't heard of many folks throwing the controller and saying to themselves "I can't play this" for ethical reasons. If the game is fun and plays well, the majority won't care.

That's just it, the game isn't fun. The mental disconnect caused by the setting is one of the reasons why it's not fun. The repetitive nature of the gameplay is probably a bigger factor, overall. But the setting and context isn't doing it any favors.

I think Ryse will see a decent number of sales, a decent number of returns, and then will trickle off into obscurity, to be spoken of in the same context as Kameo, Perfect Dark Zero, and possibly Knack. Another launch title that showed promise, but failed to deliver where it mattered. I know that I'm much more interested in Dead Rising 3. Zombies are a sure-fire antagonist that no one feels bad about destroying. Ryse is a game that will have your friends looking at you weird if you enjoy it.

At the moment its Forza 5, Dead Rising 3, and Crimson Dragon for me on the XBox One exclusives. (possibly Killer Instinct as well, but that has a free option, so its sort-of a given)

And that I agree with you on :)

I do have Madden preordered and I had the promo applied from trading in the 360 version, but it seems to be a waste (from what people have said about the ps4 version) so I may just cancel it even with the discount.

Yeah, given how many super violent games there are that are huge hits, I can't see that being much of an issue.

The problem seems to be that the combat/gameplay is just repetitive and boring.  The gore/violence make it cool for a while for those into that stuff, but once that wears off the game gets boring as its the same simplistic combat over and over and over.  I mean The Last of Us is super violent, but they mix up settings, whether you have to kill everything or can sneak around and attack nothing etc. throughout the game so it never felt boring or repetitive to me.

Anyhow, that's what I've gathered from impressions of Ryse.

This should be interesting, it could get live on even ground with the PS4 with the free games:

Games with Gold will be made available on Xbox One
Games with Gold will be made available on Xbox One, Major Nelson has confirmed on Twitter. According to the spokesman, more details will be revealed in 2014. Games with Gold is currently offered for Xbox Live subscribers on Xbox 360, and the deals at present include free copies of A World of Keflings and later this month, Iron Brigade. Xbox One launches November 22.

I don't know which reviews you were reading, but Zombie U got a fairly solid critical reception. Perhaps you were thinking about Red Steel? I can also confirm from first-hand experience that Zombie U is a fine game and very much worth playing. It's going to be on clearance a lot this Black Friday, pick up a copy if you already have a Wii U. The atmosphere and tension in the game are wonderful.
http://bit.ly/175HOcA and yeah definitely pick it BF when it'll be on sale.

I mentioned that the PS4 was having some problems, it looks like units at IGN, Kotaku and the Taco Bell PS4 promotion, more specifically having a faulty HDMI port to my friend and he cancelled his PS4 pre-order. *smacks forehead This is gonna be a thing people, I wouldn't be surprised to hear of some units of Xbox One not working come its launch (let's face it it happens with any supply line product) but use the support of the store/company before you cancel your pre-order haha. Ever since my 360 RRoDed me I always grab a warranty for my electronic devices now (Square Trade is a good site, forget getting one from retailers as they rip you off).

The Microsoft Store at the mall had their demo unit right up front and an employee getting people hyped. I have to say they are doing a much better job presenting this console at the local level. Everyone was playing Killer Instinct which really just looked like Street Fighter 4 with a KI skin. I didn't care enough to play it but there were a lot more people checking it out than the PS4 in the Sony Store.

The only launch game that looks enticing to me is Dead Rising, but there's nothing at all on the PS4 that thrills me.

I have to say the hardware for the Xbone is a lot nicer looking than the Playstation 4's. I prefer the symmetrical sticks of the PS4 but other than that I think its design is inferior.

do you have to purchase the system on discover card or just the extended warrenty?
You buy the system with your discover card and they'll tack an extra year of protection. Same goes for TVs, laptops, whatever. Just don't end up paying a bunch of interest, otherwise you'd be better off with square trade or whatever.

Also, I'm pretty sure almost every CC company has this benefit.

FWIW the start button doesn't do anything. You used to click the bottom left corner to go to the tiles...you still do, only now you're clicking on a windows logo to do so.

i know i have it on my labtop and will not put it onto my gaming desktop i love having all my apps logos in that area and i don't need that dumb start button.

.

Right click it in 8.1 and you can get to control panel and some other stuff you couldn't in 8.0.

All moot for me as I just put all the programs I need on the desktop or task bar so I never used the start button in windows 95 through windows 7 or the shitty metro screen in 8.

Whoa...didn't know about that right click thing...thanks!

I'm still having a hard time deciding on Forza 5 vs NFS: Rivals.

I've always had fun with most of the NFS games, never really played Forza besides demos as its never felt as arcadey as NFS...but F5 looks amazing and driveatar looks like tons of fun and it is the only real next gen title of the two. Kinda hope there's a demo for F5 at launch that will solidify my decision.

I saw a lot of streaming today for NFS. It definitely looks fun, so why not both?.gif Then again I got Hot Pursuit years ago for $10 through Gamefly and the new NFS doesn't seem THAT much different.

NBA2k is definitely jaw dropping for a sports game in terms of graphics. Not feeling it as much with Madden, and NBA Live as expected was a LOLfest on twitch earlier.

What I'd really like to see is more info/gameplay on Fighter Within (Fighters Uncaged was terrible, but I'd give this at least a chance if reviews are decent) and Zoo Tycoon.

Got my ps4 at midnight tonight but when I finally get an xbox one it will probably be my primary.  Sony is great with hardware but damn that metro ui looks sexy on the xbox and i'm almost positve xbox live won't go down on the 22nd.

i have been watching someone messing with ps4 ui all night and kind of disapointed with it. The main issue with ps3 ui for me was everyting was behind tons of menus and still is.

Everytime I think I have my launch lineup set I change my mind. Forza looks amazing and I've skipped the last few. NFS, on the other hand, may end up being slightly more fun. Does anyone know if NFS is still using that crappy rubber band AI?

Ah ok, so nothing then.
Good news! The PS4 is out, get off the forums and go play it :D

Yeah. I have Forza, FIFA and Ghosts coming. The problem I have is NBA 2k14 is supposed to be stellar and I might like it more than Forza having never owned a Forza. Debating back and fourth on it. I really don't need/want 4 launch games. Something won't get played ever.

2k14 vs BF4 and NFS vs Forza 5 for me. The only game I'm set on is dead rising. I'm hoping for a B1G1 from Amazon so I can get both BF4 and NBA 2k14.

4 games does seem like a lot at launch, but there isn't much coming out that I want to play.

I was just listening to IGN gamescoop and they were actually pretty positive on Ryse after really hating previous builds they played, so maybe the final product will actually be solid.

From listening to Adam Sessler's first hand impressions it sounds like both PS4's and X1's UIs are super fast which is a win win for everyone. Now finding what you need or discovering the cream of the crop will always be the main concern and more so with everything shifting to the digital front.

Being able to use the Playstation App as a quick-and-dirty keyboard for the PS4 is a really great feature. I'm very much hoping that Microsoft has something comparable with the Kinect's voice controls. Being able to type quickly and effectively without having to have a keyboard in my lap is a big plus for using these consoles for internet purposes.

It sounds like a lot of the embargoes are going to be dropping come Tuesday. There should be a lot more first-hand impressions of the XBox One's functionality then. I'm personally hoping for accounts of smooth voice command integration and a nice low decibel footprint.

Should I keep my Day One edition pre-order? Don't have a lot of interest in the launch titles outside of Forza 5 though. Even if I don't use it right away it seems like a nice collectible version. I'm hearing even the regular edition X1 is sold out until 2014 so that makes me want to get the Day One even more.
