Ubusoft sale has Far Cry (original) for $2.50. Is it worth playing this before Far Cry 2 & 3?

Also, is Uplay as bad as everyone's says?
I actually prefer the first game over its sequels.

This is a pretty typical sale price, so don't feel pressure to buy from Ubi. Having said that, Uplay seems pretty benign and I've never had a problem with the few games I have on their service.

No, people complain about Uplay and Origin because they're not Steam, but there's nothing really wrong with them. A lot of folks prefer to get games on Steam because of Steamworks fancy stuff like cheevos and cardz, and there's nothing wrong with that either. Personally I want Far Cry Blood Dragon on Steam for this reason. But does it make Uplay bad? No. Certainly I can't see there being any reason to prefer getting something as old as Far Cry 1 on Steam over Uplay. I do have several games on UPlay (mostly things I got during their really-quite-good $1 game sale a year or so ago) and it seems to work just fine.

While I agree that sometimes people do not like uplay or Origin for silly reasons, I don't think it's considerate to throw everyone's opinion out the window just because those DRM platforms never affected you. For me specifically, I used to use a piece of internet filtering software called Covenant Eyes, which usually harmlessly ran in the background. However, with uplay's latest big update 2 or 3 months ago, it constantly clashed with CE and thus would instantly crash whenever it started. This never occurred with Steam or Origin, so imagine my frustration that the game I bought on Steam would not start because uplay also had to launch in order for the game to even boot up. This is especially frustrating because I love Ubisoft games (Rayman Legends, FC3, and now Rocksmith 2014) so it was a bummer not being able to play these games because of this bug. I even went through Ubi customer support (who were very helpful by the way) and they confirmed it was some conflict between these two pieces of software.

Eventually I was forced to uninstall CE just so I can play uplay games. This is fine for now since I plan to sell my computer soon anyway, but it's pretty annoying that I paid for both software and they don't play nice with each other. I'd have to imagine the problem is somewhere on uplay's side, since I can play Steam and Origin games just fine.

So long story short, there are problems with having multiple pieces of DRM when you legitimately purchase a game. Thankfully most people won't experience these issues though, but they exist.

Although I prefer to get games on Steam, Uplay works just fine in my opinion.  I have a few games on Uplay that were cheaper than on Steam and that is why I purchased them there.

Um, okay, I was conveying my personal experience and also giving my assessment based on what I've seen posted here regarding Uplay. Not everyone's experiences are the same. I'll be the first to admit that my opinions aren't the only ones or the only valid ones.

None of the games are connected story wise, so it's not necessary to play the previous games. The first half of Far Cry 1 is good, the second half is pretty terrible though. As others have said, it goes on sale often enough so you don't have to worry about getting it right now.

I highly suggest skipping Far Cry 2 though, it's boring, repetitive and not fun. Far Cry 3 on the other hand, is great.

I had fun with FC2. The problem are the sidequests, there are too many and repetitive. If you stick to the main quest (and maybe some sq) you'll be fine.

I really need to put some hours into FC2.  It seems to be such a hugely polarizing game.  The people at Idle Thumbs seem to genuinely adore the open nature (and "emergent narrative" to use a cliche) present in FC2, but I've also heard many opinions that it's just plain boring and repetitive.  I enjoyed the little I played of FC3 so I'm wondering what I'd think of its predecessor...

Well, from what I've read, part of the problem is that enemies apparently instantly respawn every time you leave and return to an area, which artificially inflates the difficulty.

Hmm... interesting. I haven't played too many first person sandbox games so I don't know how annoying this would be in FC2. I know when I completed Infamous 2 and SRTT, I was quite peeved that there were so few enemies for me to toy with using my super powers :(

I really should skip Far Cry altogether. The demo wouldn't even work on my pc. Maybe a Windows 8 issue.

BUT IT'S ONLY $2.50!!! AND SO IS LAST REMNANT!!

See, this is my disease. Even games that are regularly super cheap, and I feel the need to buy them NOW, despite my backlog.

On the topic of Top 10 lists, I found it rather difficult to narrow my favorite games to a mere ten.  I was also surprised that some games that I absolutely loved earlier in the year couldn't find a spot on my list in retrospect, and also that I seem to have cooled off on most AAA titles.

My top 10:

1) Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds
2) Guacamelee
3) Call of Juarez: Gunslinger
4) Brothers: Tale of Two Sons
5) Rayman Legends
6) Device6
7) Tearaway
8) Bioshock Infinite
9) The Swapper
10) Phoenix Wright Dual Destinies

Honorable mentions: Defender's Quest, SR4, Gunpoint, DMC, Tomb Raider, Dragon's Crown

It's fairly annoying. You'll drive through a checkpoint and have to fight five guys, hit your destination and then have to fight the same five guys three minutes later. A slower respawn would have helped. Plus the bad guys are very "sticky" so just blowing through the points and leaving them all in the dust is difficult. The world feels a bit less "open" than FC3 since a good deal of the terrain is either off limits or difficult to traverse -- you often hit cliffs or impassable hills. Fast travel is pretty limited so you spend a lot of time on the roads meaning a lot of time fighting patrols and checkpoints. There's also some malaria side plot that's nothing but irritating.

That said, I liked the game and probably had it 80% done before finding out from others that I should be hating it (I did finish it). If I played FC2 after FC3 though, I'd likely get fed up a bit sooner. The setting was nifty (though Generic Central African Nation has a lot more white dudes than I'd have guessed), the weapons felt different from one another, fire physics were a lot of fun and you could do some fun tricks and traps.

If you play 2 first, you'll appreciate the changes that they made in 3. Both are great games.

In 2, get a golden weapon to save yourself annoying situations of your weapon breaking

The first half of Far Cry 1 is good, the second half is pretty terrible though.
The first half of the game was so good that I think the second half has become something of an internet legend in terms of how it is supposedly so much worse. Sure, it's more linear and some things get goofy, but it's no worse than any of the better FPS games of the day.

FC2 had more problems than just reappearing enemies at checkpoints, though that was incredibly annoying. I understand the danger of leaving an open world void of interesting stuff, but FC2 forces you to go through these narrow, forced fights regularly, making it a chore to get from point A to point B.

Perhaps most annoying of all is that you constantly contract malaria, which is not the most fun game mechanic in the world.

FC2 is not devoid of fun and it can be really awesome when you're wiping out a camp systematically, but it does also make you want to rip out your hair in frustration.

Not unlike FarCry, FarCry 2 is so good in some ways that it's all the more frustrating when you have to deal with those aspects of the game that are not as fun.

I really should skip Far Cry altogether. The demo wouldn't even work on my pc. Maybe a Windows 8 issue.
http://steamcommunity.com/app/13520/discussions/0/648811126403334595/ Reports here are that it works just fine in Win8. Perhaps the demo is of an older build? Of course, as always, YMMV.

This is probably my biggest issue with the game and why I haven't gotten around to completing it. It's the same reason I haven't finished Dead Rising 2 for that matter.

A demo for a game that's over ten years old that has seen many huge changes in hardware and software since it released is most likely not a good indicator of anything. Demos are rarely supported or patched in any way. Heck, playing a demo from a game just a couple years old is probably not that good of an indication either.

Geez, so I realize that Ubi Montreal are Canadians and malaria is not endemic in that part of the world, but has no one there heard of quinine? It's a pretty big deal.

Also, just when you thought you owned all of the content of the Magicka GOTD (Game of the Decade) edition, there emerges this. So now Steam is selling ebooks?

Your outrage may be misplaced. You're supposed to be indignant because it's Magicka.
Ah, but I'm not outraged. If Steam is about to start opening the floodgates for ebooks, I'm looking forward to expanding my library during the mega-sales. Hopefully they'll start with the David Gaider Dragon Age books and go from there. . . .

Can you feel it? Squeenix Humble Bundle? I sense it!
We'll know soon enough. Who else has some rampant speculation about what HB will do?

It's going to be a Humble Indie Bundle.  Mark my words.  And Steam started selling ebooks a while ago and we went through the whole "Steam is selling eBooks" "wait, Steam is selling eBooks" "wait, eBooks are being sold on Steam" "wait, I went on Steam and I saw an eBook" "wait, I saw an eBook when I went on Steam" "wait, I thought I was on Amazon I saw an eBook on Steam" "wait, I was on Steam and I thought I was on Amazon I saw an eBook"

Hamilton's Great Adventure is pretty but an exercise in frustration. I may just suck at platformers but I also felt this way about Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.
You are calling HGA a platformer are you? Because if so it's no wonder you hate platformers so much.

On the topic of GOTY lists, I also haven't played enough 2013 games to form a full list, and most that I have played wouldn't make it on mine (sorry Last of Us and Bioshock Infinite). So here's my top 15 games I played this year (or think I did):

1.)Journey

2.)Thomas Was Alone

3.)The Swapper

4.)Dust: An Elysian Tail

5.)inFamous 2

6.)Mutant Blobs Attack

7.)To The Moon

8.)Sound Shapes

9.)Rayman Origins

10.)Gears of War 3

11.)Braid

12.)Guacamelee

13.)Gone Home

14.)Arkham City

15.)Critter Crunch

*Note: Order subject to change depending on current disposition.

I thought I was on Steam and saw a million eBooks but then realized I was on my Kindle.

Get ready to jack into the grid, cyber cowboys. Steam has added VR support as a category.
I'll need to LAN-node the I/O gateways through the RAM-block in order to ASCII swap the virus's overclocking. Crap, they've already corrupted the metadata through the IRQ drive. Maybe if I change the RS-232 layout...

Am I cyber cowboying right?

I'm glad I kept this puppy around:

I still have one. Strange that it seemed so much more fun back in the day. Wario Land was the bomb.
I never bought one, but I remember spending time playing it on top of the Sears video game counter while my mom shopped.

Edit:

1. Just now realized how similar to the Gamecube controller the Virtual Boy controller was.

2. Searching for "Virtual Boy" in Google probably makes me look like a creep to the NSA.

When I wore it I felt as cool as this guy did, and looked equally ridiculous. Google Glass 1995 edition.
I envy you.

My portable gaming was restricted to this:

And 90% of the time I played them through the packaging at Wal-Mart until the battery ran out and then put them back on the shelf.

I was a pretty spoiled kid, though admittedly not as spoiled as my own kids are.

For example in 1994 my mom took me to the Nintendo Powerfest™ road tour in Tulsa, OK where I won a t-shirt that looked like this:

T-shirt%20-%20Nintendo%20PowerFest%201994.jpg

Which I wore nearly every week until it finally gave out about 6 years later when I was in college.

I wouldn't go poking around at any Black ICE with that lingo. You probably don't even have a cool jacket.

I saw a complete in box Virtual Boy at a thrift store a little while ago...so it figures I had no money on me to actually buy it :oldman:
Did you check your cheeks for any stored money?

And usually with the tags still on while I was at Wal-Mart. And I would take them off and put them back on the rack before we left the store.
