Daily Deal:
Please check the Steam homepage.

Weeklong Deals:
Steam usually has week-long deals that change on Mondays at 6PM UTC. They mostly feature indie games, and may not run every week.

Sale summary lists:

Key:
⤷ indicates DLC, — specifies part of a pack, + shows alternative versions, ⚠ highlights things worth knowing, ♫ is obvious, and ... denotes a multi-pack.

Holiday Sale 2013 | 19/12/13 through 3/1/14:
Days 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, 13-14.

Spring/Autumn Sale 2013 | 27/11/13 through 3/12/13:

Steam deals on other stores: (Related threads on CAG.)

Indie* bundle threads: (*Not always indie, nor always a bundle.)

Free stuff:
There are quite a few free games (mostly Free to Play) and mods available via the Steam platform, a comprehensive list of which can be found in this thread on the SPUF.
(NOTE: free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.)

That just sounds deliberately obnoxious.
I find that applies to a lot of achievements these days. I don't think the Dead Island ones are meant to be that frustrating, I think it is poor game design since that game is particularly buggy, but I do remember reading one collectible you can't go back and find unless you happened to get it the first time you were in the area and then another side mission has to be done or activated at a certain time or it disappears which would then affect the 100% mission/progress achievement.

I hate the collectible achievements that you have to pretty much follow a guide for... if I can't find it with my own curious (but not batshit-obsessive) exploring, I'm not doing it.  Following a guide kills the fun for me.

I played Grand Theft Auto 5 for 40+ hours and only found maybe 10 or less collectibles out of a few hundred. Guess that's how they expect to sell the strategy guides. In fact I just looked up how many collectibles there are and found that there was one I wasn't even aware of, knife fights.

Who buys strategy guides anymore? Given the prevalence of web-guides and smart-phones/tablets/laptops I can't see even a lowly console peasant buying one. I will note that the hardback Skyrim Legendary guide (huge book) is physically impressive...

Personally I mostly checkguides to avoid pitfalls starting out or when I get stuck.

I mostly go to Youtube when I get stuck, but people still buy strategy guides.

I think they're even more pointless now that tablets and smartphones exist. When I was a kid on SNES/N64 I would print out check lists or sections of FAQs on my printer to take down to where my TV was. With a tablet it's just right there in your hand at all times. I wish I had a tablet when I was killing those damn 200 pigeons in GTA4, twice. I platinum'd Uncharted 3 in November and it was a breeze, just looking up youtube and IGN guides on my iPod touch while playing.

I got pretty bad over the course of a year with achievements/trophies on Xbox Live/PS3. At first I told myself that I was doing it to "get more from each game I bought" (which also only helped add to my backlog). After a while I realized that I wasn't even getting a sense of accomplishment for getting achievements any more... Not only that... I would only feel relief after getting all of them for a given game & I could finally stop playing.

It was at this point I realized I had fallen into a trap that I needed to break myself out of. I've since turned notifications off for all achievements/trophies & just play the game the way I want to.

It's also helped with not getting spoiled on things in games, since I am not looking at achievement lists ahead of time so I don't "miss one".

I am much happier gaming now than when I was going for achievements/trophies - games are still fun - just like they were before these things were invented to keep us playing games until the DLC came out. :)
I really enjoyed attempting to get achievements on xbox. It was fun, and it did help me get more out of games. I never got to the point where I would break my back getting all the achievements, though, unless I REALLY enjoyed the game; the achievements helped me spend more time in a world I really enjoyed. Ever since getting into PC gaming, though, I've pretty much ignored achievements. My backlog is too large to spend time focusing on cheevos.

Oh it did start out that way with me (spending more time in game worlds since I rarely replay games).. and in all honesty I don't have THAT many 100%s - it then became more about getting as many achievements as I possibly could to raise my (meaningless) gamerscore.

After it evolved into this weird obsession with getting them I realized it was actually ruining my enjoyment of a lot of games. My GF once said I was treating games like work - and she was right (although I didn't admit it at the time).

I have really been a lot happier since I've turned off notifications & stopped achievement hunting. I don't miss it at all.

I'm also not trying to convince anyone of anything either - just felt like sharing. if hunting for achievements is fun or gives you satisfaction then go for it! :)

The only achievements I ever cared about were ones that had an in-game reward some like of the TF2 unlocks.  The rest I don't care about -- no one is going to look at my achievements library and say "Wow, this guy is amazing!" and I don't think any better of myself for getting them so why bother.

I'll agree with Fox that some of the passive ones are a nice surprise, especially when they hint that you did something unusual or off the normal track (say, one for examining a painting in a FPS) but if I already know that collecting 20 widgets will get me a momentary blurb saying I got "Widget Hunter" then, eh, I'm fine.

Sometimes the achievements that have you alter your playstyle make sense. In online games like TF2 or World of Warcraft or Civilization V where you're doing the same thing over and over again, offering acknowledgement or reward for self-imposed challenges can be a breath of fresh air. Applying the same to a single-player game where you're advancing a story, not so much.

I like games that give me an achievement for finishing the tutorial. I'm pretty good at getting those.

I once bought a game from Gamefly and decided to test it before tossing it into the backlog, and I received a trophy just for getting to the title screen. It's still the only trophy I have for that game.

^_^ I'm interested in the DS4, but I'm waiting for better support (and price)... I'm surprised they dropped analog-pressure for the buttons... sure it wasn't used that much, but still. I'll never forget the first time I was playing PS2 game and was asked to mash a button hard and it took me a moment of failing to remember oh yeah, these have pressure transducers. (Historically some games asked this, but it was more theme than reality.) I suppose this also makes the DS2/3 better for PS2-emu.
I'm loving the DS4, for play on both the PS4 and PC.

I like the overall feel in my hands, the DS4 grips are a bit wider and are more comfortable to hold for longer gaming sessions than the DS3 and I have medium gal hands. What I'm not a fan of is the ridge on top of the analog sticks. It feels like an unnecessary friction point and I find my thumb being irritated by it when playing analog stick intensive games. It could just be my play style but I've found that ridge annoying. I'm waiting for the aftermarket to kick in so I can cap or replace the sticks, otherwise, love the controller.

I am always conflicted when it comes to using outside resources when playing a game but if I don't use them then I inevitably end up playing the game wrong. When I started Uncharted I didn't know I was supposed to be looking for stuff to pick up/collect and got through much of the game before I discovered this. I have since gotten stuck at a point where I can't get through an area without getting killed (because I suck at shooting things) so I don't care anymore but I was frustrated at the time and had to tamp down my OCD in order to avoid starting completely over. I guess you have to read something about proper game play or just wing it and take what you figure out.

I love me a good starter guide... just give me insight that'll increase my enjoyment of the game.

....some games these days don't even have a PDF-manual.

When does steam usually run their next big sale? I finally built my pc and I caught the end of the winter sale
Steam sales aren't all they're cracked up to be. There'll be plenty of good sales before then.

Keep an eye on:

Amazon

Green Man Gaming

GamersGate

GOG

GameFly

GameStop (only buy steam/origin keys from GS)

The first four have permanent threads.

Also bundles: Humble, IndieGala, Groupees, Indie Royale, etc. These have threads too.

Don't expect the OP/title of the PC threads to be up to date.

There will be a sale in the spring, but the next big sale will be around July 4th or so.
Right. Keep in mind though that they run daily, weekly and weekend deals pretty regularly and also that many games will activate on Steam even if you buy it elsewhere. You can go to isthereanydeal.com and setup price notifications ('wait for a better price') so that you'll be emailed once a particular game is below a certain price or % off threshold no matter which store has it on sale.

There's really no reason to wait until the summer sale unless you're looking for a more obscure game that doesn't activate to Steam if bought elsewhere and tends not to go on sale at Steam very often. For most big titles and even indie stuff though chances are it will go on sale somewhere sooner than July.

Steam sales aren't all they're cracked up to be...unless your name is Spoder Walton and you run a monopoly on various trading cards. Then your Steam wallet could play lead in the Broadway adaptation of Precious.

Poor Precious. I'm still waiting to find out if she died or not in American Horror Story. That and if Kathy Bates' head is still sitting upstairs on a table at the weave shop watching Roots.

Yeah I try and keep up with it daily but that sale prompted me to buy a bunch of games I have never even heard of and I'm really enjoying them! But for sure I'm always going to keep an eye out for solid deals. Thanks!

I heard he had so many GabeN Funbux that GabeN had to give him a free Steambox or else he was gonna buy all the Steam games and make GabeN broke.

I heard Spoder IS GabeN. But not how you would think...it's more aptly described as GabeN is Spoder. GabeN is a holographic image produced from Spoder's headquarters. Dat dam spoder

Sort of off-topic tech support: Has anyone upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8 with 800+ games? If so, how long did the upgrade take and did many games stop functioning from the upgrade? I know Motoki upgraded a long time ago but not sure if he did a fresh install or not. I do not want to do a re-install of everything especially because I installed the 1C pack from Gamersgate which took a while to do.

Also anyone know of a master list of games that do not work under windows 8 such as doom rails?

Thank you in advance for any advice.

I had no issues, though I haven't launched all of the games I transferred over. I did have some issues with a couple games not liking that they were no longer on C drive (bought an SSD) but that's about it.

I guess I should respond since I was mentioned. ;)

I didn't do a fresh install from Win7 to Win8, just installed on top and most games worked okay. As you mentioned Doom Rails is an odd one that doesn't, and don't expect a fix I think the dev moved on. Also The Sims Medieval if you patch or get the expansion uses a version of Securom that's incompatible with Windows 8. EA apparently has no interest in fixing it but since the issue is directly related to Securom there are, ahem, ways around it.

Pretty much everything else worked fine. I think a few needed to be set to Windows 7 or XP compatibility mode but the vast majority did not. If there's a specific game you're concerned about you can try checking the Steam community forum for that game and if there's an issue it's guaranteed someone will have mentioned it there, but just in general the majority of games (and I own way too many) I didn't have any issues with when I moved to Windows 8.
