Free stuff:
There are quite a few free games (mostly Free to Play) and mods available via the Steam platform, a comprehensive list of which can be found in this thread on the SPUF.
(NOTE: free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.)

The original PQ's lowest price was $1.24 in one of the winter sales at least three years ago. I wanted to buy it redundantly but my wife talked me out of it. Today I bought it redundantly with card money! (Don't tell my wife.)

I got Galactrix for my birthday back when it first came out, the PC version since handheld versions wouldn't be available until later. I never finished it, which says a lot because I played PQ1 and PQ2 to 100% completion (all spells researched, etc.). The main problem was a graphics card incompatibility that they didn't remedy until about 16 months later.

The problem most people have with Galactrix is that there's little planning involved. With the hex grid, you're going to have cascades occur with no idea of how the board will look for your opponent. Thinking back to the final battle in PQ1 where you either play to be certain the boss can make no connections on his turns or get ROFLstomped, it would be absolutely impossible in Galactrix. Too much of the battling comes down to luck rather than strategy.

The game has several other things you can do aside from advancing the story. There's a good deal of mercantile gaming involved where you can run ore and contraband to places that pay highest while avoiding patrols, but it can get to be boring after a while.

One nice thing is that there was a robust modding community back in the day (which I know only because I was on the boards often looking for the GC incompatibility to be fixed). One popular mod was to freeze time during cascades for... was it hacking that went on a timer? You have thirty seconds to complete a set of objectives, but you make a connection and lose 22 of them watching filler tiles drop in, connect, vanish, repopulate, repeat, OH COME ON. So yeah, someone fixed that, though I just looked at it as part of the challenge for the time I put into it.

I bought it again now. I'll give it a fresh start some time. Just not while there are better games on the docket.
Are you playing Marvel Puzzle Quest Dark Reign at all?

I got my 14 year old a Playstation Plus subscription for Christmas. We're looking at the 'free' games and I say he should just 'buy' all of them so they're in his library. He's like "Eh, this one is a racing game and I don't care about those."
"Well, get it anyway in case you change your mind"
"But I'll never play it"
"So what? It's free, just buy it"
"Nah"
"IT'S LIKE TWO BUTTON PRESSES WHY WON'T YOU JUST PRESS THE TWO BUTTONS??"
"Whatever. Calm down, old man..."
Only one proper response, here. Disown him.

and hello!

I've said before, I'd love this game if I had more time to play, but I don't.

I quit the game after getting killed by the rooftop gargoyles. I just can't keep replaying the same levels over and over, and I'm too prideful to watch walkthroughs.
About the Gargoyles, they're tough, unless...

...you find Solaire and get him to help you out!

Then, this battle's a breeze - he can attack one gargoyle and be a meat shield, more or less.

And you can just pummel whatever one you feel.

JASF has terrible reviews... but for $2 I'm tempted.

Edit: Bought. I was eyeing this on Amazon but it's not steam there.
It has terrible reviews on Amazon that all seem to say that it isn't a flight sim like the old Jane's games. Other reviews seem to say it's a competent arcade flight combat game. I think this looks like a classic case of a group bombing a game's reviews for reasons unrelated to the game's quality.

That .50, gets you everytime.
Ultimately it's what stands between MysterD and happiness.

...not sure if I'm supposed to yellow-comic-sans that or not.

Yeah. That's consistent with what I read everywhere... I am expecting my full 8-quarters worth of arcade action. ;)

I don't remember Ashes there.
^_^ I was about to comment that passenger seats are only good for one thing... your sim setup. Otherwise they're just dead weight that doesn't make you go faster.

This is a family friendly thread you shit. I hope you get run over by a tractor trailer and your innards are picked apart by vultures.
I have a feeling that wouldn't be G-rated.
