I don't like dead Island... But everytime I start playing it, I sunk hours into it. I know, punching zombies "to death" is addictive

I think I started it three or four times which distorted it a little. It actually became enjoyable for a bit, and I made it quite far into the game. I managed to box off quite a few of the achievements too, they're listed in my "Rarest Achievement Showcase". Which isn't surprising as nobody plays Krater.

...

I should probably play Goat Simulator instead.
I don't know why you haven't. Does remind me I need to get around to Krater one day.

You know, I loved this game, but the missions were very repetitive, grindy etc. I think were it not for the zombie theme and the fact enemies leveled up with you so they remained difficult to the end and the fact weapons seemed to fall apart so easily, I would have hated this game.

Krater is actually a pretty solid game now. The living shit was patched out of it and now it's a pretty gorgeous game with it's own brand of attitude. Early adopters though... yeah, sorry about that.

I played it some days ago for cards (yes, I sometimes play those games) and found it very good. I even think about going back to it again...

That's exactly what I did. Didn't play a whole lot of it, but I was happily surprised with it and loved the setting.

Plus... rotating camera. Take notes please, Runic.

My reasoning or stopping Krater wasn't so much boredom as it was me getting pulverised. My team was around level 9 (I think) and I was heading in to threat level 10 areas. I just got smashed everywhere I went. I think it was more down to me not having enough implants/boosters/gear to take on the tougher enemies.

It does have some creative class options which the achievements sorta help you "discover". E.g. It has you stacking a regulator (the ranged DPS class) with healing boosters and suddenly that class is an aoe healer. Not everything works, but some combinations are interesting enough.

It's not a perfect game, but it's not as bad as it's made out to be.

35 hours though. I bring shame on family.

Has anyone removed the front glass/plastic/whatever of their laptop LCD before? A tiny, tiny bug crawled beneath mine somehow... I was trying to "guide" him to the edge and he seems to be smashed now. Whoops...

It's not a bug; it's a feature now.

I think he's technically right. There are technically tombs, but they're definitely underwhelming in comparison to older ones, so your point still stands. Hell, the only singleplayer DLC is called Tomb of the Lost Adventurer, too bad it's short as shit.
Yes, technically he is right... but technically you could include the garage of the lady in Michigan who died in the back of her car and wasn't discovered for 6 years as a tomb.

Is it what comes to anyone's mind when they think of a tomb... No. Is what was in TR reboot (with all the fixings of modern man right there) what comes to people's mind? Again, no.

Do I think the game should really get credit for including "proper" tombs...? No, I do not.

maybe I smoked away those brain cells, but I had forgotten how different the early tomb raider games were from this newest one.
Or maybe you never had the brain cells to begin with...? ;) (I kid! I kid!)

Iit really is night and day... Granted, the human opponents picked up later in the series before the reboot happened. PETA and others complained/pointed out just how much wild life Lara killed over the years.

That new Batman game looks pretty cool. Why didn't they port it to PS4?
Not sure what thread you meant to post this in but I suspect/hope it wasn't this one...

Anyhow, my guess would be lack of player base and the fact its a direct sequel to a game not on the system...

Though in my defense it was a laptop that someone else got rid of because they shattered the screen. I took it out to see how easy it would be to replace but decided it wasn't worth it for this machine which I've found various unlaptop-like functions for since.

As a word of warning, I like to tinker and have no trouble taking apart my new, expensive electronics on occasion, but when the various layers of plastic and stuff started falling away when I disassembled the screen I wasn't at all confident they'd go back together easily if that had been the goal.

The "TOMB Raider!" thing seems silly to me.  It's a prequel.  You don't go from zero to flat-out tomb raidin' in a day.  It's just the franchise name with the story of how the titular Tomb Raider got her start tomb raidin'.

I can see "Wish it had more puzzles" or something as a valid criticism but that people went ape over the name as though it was some false advertising is a little weird.

I've got two like that. I've often considered hooking the best one up to the TV and having them both sat open on the TV stand with photos inside the screens.

I'm not sure the missus would appreciate the tech decor though =D

Defense technica and stronghold looks good on paper. If the bundle is cheap enough I may buy it

Defense Technica is pretty meh. A non-mazing version of Defense Grid, with less polish, balance, and replayability.
There's not a ton of Greenlight Desura junk in there so I kind of doubt it will be super cheap to start with. Maybe if it sells really poorly they will pull a Gala and do a Happy Hour or something but if it's almost all Steam keys and at least a couple of games not bundled before (not counting that $10 tier for that Humble Bundle because seriously?) it will probably sell reasonably well.

Not sure if you saw more original post but it talked about more than naming semantics... but it really does come down to when I play a Tomb Raider game I want to play a Tomb Raider game. Not a poor man's Uncharted.

Original post:

Honestly, her bust line has nothing to do with hate/dislike for the game... (and also there's nothing wrong with her preTR 2013 breast size. It works well on the stylized female form they had. It would not have looked right on a realistic model.)

The hate comes from the fact that its a poor Tomb Raider game... Note the use of the words "Tomb Raider Game" as there is nothing wrong with the current TR game outside of the misuse of the name attracted to it.

A) There are no Tombs. There are no real puzzles (only one of the side challenge rooms has any challenge and its only because of the timing needed to complete it), secrets are nonexistent (a cow bell goes off anytime you approach one of these challenge rooms so even the blind cannot miss them... I would go with the unobservant... but really how do you miss all the chalk scrawled on the walls next to these caves?), and there really is no sense at anytime that you are the first human to explore these areas since a bygone time.

B) "Real" TR games are 80% (might be a bit on the low side, to be honest, and the early TR games its extremely low) about exploration/platforming/puzzles and the rest is about combat... This game is easily the reverse.

Uncharted was always quickly (and wrongly) compared to the TR series... Even the early Uncharted games where exploration/puzzles light. The puzzles where simple story related but they where never meant to stop you from advancing and make you think. (Really, a far better comparison to Uncharted is the Gears of War series... but that's getting off topic.) but, now, the TR reboot as easy comparison to Uncharted.

Is mimicking Uncharted a bad thing? No, not really. Uncharted is a hell of a series and the TR games could (and did) learn allot from them... From framing a better narrative, from integrating other characters into Lara's experience, to being a cinematic spectacle, etc... But I think a title change/swap was in order. Lara Croft and Tomb Raider are synonymous with each other. What would have been wrong with it being called Lara Croft: Subtitle Here (A Survivor is Born, The Lost Island, etc) with the sequels being called Lara Croft 2: The Next Subtitle?

And before you think... "Inmate that's silly! Stop splinting so many damn hairs!" stop and consider title they did go with... Tomb Raider. (Like nothing has come before it... )

Anyhow, for those who would rather just look at pictures instead of reading... A simple and complete comparison between the first TR and the reboot:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEN5obhFRj4

Note: In the first you did kill a fair amount of wildlife... but even when added its still a hell of allot lower bodycount.

So in the end... TR 2013 was a good to great game... but not a good TR game.
In other news... Anyone got any thoughts on FORCED? (Its part of the midweek madness.)

I read it but I was speaking more broadly than just your opinion as well. So nyeah. But then, although I've played some older TR games, I have no real attachment to them so a more plot-based rather than puzzle-based game was fine by me.

You don't want it.

I bought it at Xmas and played it with an old WoW friend. It's very hard, requires a very good understanding of co-op mechanics, co-ordination, communication and above all a reasonable level of game playing ability.

What I'm trying to say is that unless you don't suck and have good friends to play with, it's probably not worth your pennies. Bide your time and wait for it to hit 75% off in the summer. Then buy a 4-pack from JakeNome.

Just to chime in on the Tomb Raider talk.  I grew up when the Tomb Raider games were popular, but never played them as at that time I only played RPGs.  My first entry into TR was the newest iteration.  I really enjoyed the game.  The story was average at best, but I really appreciated the action and the feel.  Maybe if I played the older games I'd be upset about the lack of depth, but for me as a TR beginner it was great.

Since everyone else is talking about Tomb Raider...

Admittedly I own Tomb Raider but haven't played it yet (imagine that) but the whole softer Lara thing kind of turns me off. Is a tough female lead something that's Terminator 2/Xena 90s passé?

Yes. Here's what it looks like now.

I've replaced LCD screens on a laptop. It's definitely not easy. You have to know where every screw and clip is, otherwise you might break the frame or whatever. From my recollection, the LCD was just one screen thing, no layers, so not sure where a bug would squeeze in, but maybe other laptops are different.

I haven't played it yet either, but I know what Squeenix was going for here. It's a prequel to all of the other TR games where she's Lara "I can shoot you with two pistols simultaneously without even looking at where I'm aiming" Croft so they started her out as a scared college student who toughens up when placed in a dangerous survival situation and is forced to rely on her own ability and cunning to make it out in one piece. It doesn't seem like an inherently-bad idea. It's basically what they did with Batman in Origins, although some of the story beats in that game just made Batman seem like a complete cock-up.

It's a prequel - she may start out soft, but doesn't stay that way for long. Personally, I loved the game so much I bought a second copy of it for my gf.

Give it at least 20 minutes. The first 20 minutes or so was enough to get me to almost finish it in one sitting.

I also loved it.

I played the original Tomb Raider games but hold no special love in my heart for them. I liked them quite a bit, but they had plenty of problems, even when new. Yes, it's a different kind of game and anyone who wants the old style Tomb Raider should be aware of that, but it stands on its own as something very good.

And as far as it being a poor man's Uncharted, which I've heard tons of people say since they started showing the game off, sure it's a bit like Uncharted, but I like the way it plays more. Give me a half dozen enemies and bow over the waves and waves of shooting guys from Uncharted any day.

I beat it.  Considering its hard for a game to hold my attention for that long. I got bad Gamer A-D-D  (trying to be better 2014) I'd say it was pretty good, it definitely was more like an uncharted game then a Tomb Raider though.

So I guess CoJ: The Cartel is generally regarded as the worst of the series. I just bought BiB. I'll probably pass on Cartel. Also it seems to be sold as Steamworks at other places so not as urgent to buy it on sale on Steam itself as the older ones.

BiB a good game?  I very much enjoyed Gunslinger but stalled out pretty quick on the original game.  But the only opinion I consistently hear is that Cartel is a dog to be avoided.

I've admittedly been rough on it but it IS worth playing and as others have said soft Lara only last an hour at most.
