Xbox One - General Discussion Thread

I hope I don't sound too ignorant here, but I have 2 quick questions: Can you use the TV feature without Kinect? And is the system compatible with DirecTV receivers?

It's compatible without Kinect, although after using the kinect extensively . . . I'd recommend getting a kinect version.  Coming home and saying "Xbox On" and having it power on always makes me happy.

The passthrough will work with any HDMI device.  It'll be labeled as "TV", but in reality, you could pass through anything that uses an HDMI out.  I'm not sure if the One Guide offers Direct TV . . . I'd have to do more research for that.

I don't really use the One Guide but probably will more when the twitter stuff gets added.

Just read that with Microsoft letting developers essentially use the Kinect's 10% GPU pull has already led to Bungie getting Destiny to run exactly how it runs on the PS4.

Some confusion as to if that then "deactivates" your Kinect. They say you can still say "Xbox record that" and it will still work but then in the same article say sometimes the game will use all the system GPU and that'll make Kinect not hear you?

I'm not totally sure if I'm understanding it correctly.

The article implies that developers have the option to turn off Kinect completely. Thus, gesture and visual recognition won't work in these instances until you go back to the home screen but voice commands wills still work.

EDIT: I was wrong. Voice commands can be used at all times.

From IGN Article: "If a studio wants to go ahead and create a title in which Kinect plays no part, then gesture controls and visual recognition will be suspended while the game runs. Once it's minimized, however, it's business as usual."

In IGN's article Microsoft said the functions like "Xbox record that" will work all the time with 100% of games.

Just goes to show again that they should have just built a microphone into the front of the X1 for all the voice command stuff and left the camera totally optional for people who wanted to use gestures or play Dance Central/Kinect Sports type games that require the motion sensor stuff.

People seem to love the voice command stuff, but a much smaller number use the gestures or care about games like Kinect Sports as the motion control gaming fad has largely passed it seems.

That's because Mattrick and Co never envisioned a version of X1 without Kinect. It's apparent they had a totally different vision for the console and all their decisions (dare I say mistakes) have become massive hurdles that Spencer and Co are trying to overcome.

Good, maybe this will stop the stupid resolution issue that people can't tell anyways because they're human beings and not cyborgs... yet.

While true, even the initial reveal that was focused so much on the TV/media features mainly highlighted all the voice command stuff and not that much of the gestures or motion control gaming.

I guess they just wrongly thought the motion control fad was still stronger and that they could get a lot of the Wii Sports/Wii Fit crowd since the Wii U wasn't selling well. Otherwise, no reason to force in the camera, vs. just building a mic into the console for all the voice command stuff.

It's like you haven't been around here for a while... Microsoft made the first Kinect as an add on for the Xbox 360, then later bundling it with the systems. The development for the Kinect was splintered due to this so they decided to include the next Kinect, a device that's ten times better than the first iteration imo (like first gen iPod relation), with each system they sell so developers using the Kinect know the exact number of people using the device.

bad idea. here's a few reasons.

1)Articles about a built in microphone would cause a ton of negative articles to be brought up...remember when kinect was mandatory last year?

2)The xbox would need to be in a place where the built in mic could pick you up easily while at the same time noise cancelling the tv. Good luck trying to do that if you put the xbox inside a shelf or in a cabinet.

3)The camera isn't just for games...plenty of people use it for twitch streaming/skype. Just look at the ps4 camera. The only use for that is streaming and it was still selling a lot.

4)A built in mic without a camera can't see you, so it won't know who gives a command. My niece comes over so we can play split screen COD, and it knows which one of us gives the command and will go to that person's friends list or whatever command we give.

The "just use commands via headset" is also a bad idea. When I get home I can turn on everything with one command, and if i'm not going to play xbox I don't even need to pick up the controller at all. Imagine if you get home and have to turn on your controller, plug in your headset, and then give commands to go to netfilx? Wouldn't make sense.

While that's all true, obviously the majority of the market didn't think that stuff was worth the $100 premium over PS4.

And sure, having the camera optional fragments the market for developers. But so what? Motion control stuff is largely dead since the filthy casuals that bought up the Wii quit gaming or moved to phone/tablet/Facebook games. Even with Kinect packed in there wasn't much in the way of Kinect specific games coming out before the Kinectless sku launched.

People that want streaming etc. can buy the peripheral separate, or a bundle with it included. It should never have been forced on everyone. If there had been a Kinectless sku day one, I'd probably be an X1 owner instead of a PS4 owner since I played 360 the most last gen--but outright hate motion controls and have no interest in Twitch, Skype etc. and thus wasn't willing to pay the extra $100. I'm sure a lot of others are in the same boat, which is partly behind the X1s sluggish sales post launch.

And I guess a Mic on the console could be problematic if the console is behind closed doors. But that's a recipe for overheating anyway. I always keep my doors open when my consoles are on--especially PS4 as it gets hot as hell and sounds like a jet engine if I forget to open the doors. Otherwise, the Kinect is right by the TV too and would have the same issue with TV noise having to be filtered out.

I think what it boils down to is that if folks want the voice command features they'll buy a Kinect. If not, they now have the option to avoid it all together.

I think the Xbox One is a fine system. Some misstep at the beginning but things are and will get even better.

I'm using this. It's working great so far.
Seagate Expansion 3TB Desktop External Hard Drive USB 3.0

Using the Seagate 3 TB Backup Plus. It's externally powered, but works (and looks) amazingly well.
Thank you. Appreciate the feedback.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-06-18-witcher-3-e3-gameplay-demo-combat-was-deliberately-easy-cd-projekt-says

Looks like the Witcher 3 e3 demo was running on the Xbox One @ 900p/30fps

"We will hit 900p no problem. We'd like to get it up to 1080p on Xbox One. That's our goal. "

"Witcher 3 does support voice control via Kinect for magic signs so players need not access the radial menu. The voice command side doesn't tap into the GPU side at all, so we can still have Kinect. So if you buy Kinect you can use it for voice commands and system commands. But since it's not using the camera at all we can use any extra power we can take to speed up the GPU."

and their thoughts on ps4/xbox one

"But I think in the longer run everything is going to be on both platforms running at 1080p. It's just taking developers longer to do it than they expected because the architecture is a little more challenging on the Xbox One."

"It's actually easier to develop for Xbox One for us because we're PC developers. So everything we do on PC is for DirectX 11. And Xbox is also based on DX. So for the rendering side it's a more natural progression for us to go to Xbox."

"But we anticipate being able to do 1080p on PS4 a little bit easier than on the Xbox."

The game looked absolutely gorgeous, I'm sure they'll hit 1080 by their release date early next year. Really, The Witcher 3 is my #1 pick for my Xbox One next year.

if halo 5 is anything like halo 4 no thanks
From the sounds of things it will be more like the old Halo with some new things sprinkled in. I liked the old school Halo and the new ways of Halo. Just hope the dedicated servers do a good job as they say they will. Everyone knows that was one of Halo's biggest problems, the standbying. I guess we will find out December 27th what they have done with the last couple of years.

Definitely looking forward to Witcher 3. That game will probably keep me entertained for Skyrim amount of time.

Have read two of the books as well, starting a third - which has increased my enjoyment of the games immeasurably.

What about Halo 5?
Comes out at the end of 2015.

Kylearan,
Ohh I didn't know they had Witcher books. I still need to finish 2, on summer drought list, do you recommend reading them before I finish The Witcher 2 or should I save them for in-between 2 and 3?

Yep, Andrzej Sapkowski authored quite a few books and short stories. There is a 5-book Dark Horse comic mini-series about to wrap up. Heck, there's even an old TV show (in Polish, with English subs) - and a previous game from a different developer, that never saw the light of day.

While the games are original and self-contained, they draw entirely on the books. I recommend reading them as soon as you can, and even alongside playing the games. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt draws heavily from the first 3 books, especially The Time of Contempt. The "prophecy" we hear about in the game is referenced, as is the Wild Hunt, etc., etc. If you enjoy the games, definitely track down the books.

I was very impressed by the Pre-E3 Witcher 3 trailer.  I have W2 on my HDD and tried playing it twice but couldnt get into it.  I hear nothing but great things about the game and the entire franchise.  I'm thinking I should give W2 another try in preparation for W3 next February.

That being said....Dragon Age: Inquisition > All the things.  I am freaking out looking forward to that game.

I know right, when Dragon Age: Inquisition hits that's all I'll be playing so I'll have to play The Witcher 2 some time from now till then lol.

I'm scared to read the third book knowing that the new translator got all the names wrong and is by popular accounts a much worse writer than the previous translator(s).

The Last Wish is one of my all-time favorite fantasy books. A bunch of short stories that add to the Witcher's world, teach us a little about Geralt, and feature some fascinating monsters. Every Witcher game fan should buy it.

The second English book, The Last Wish, was pretty bad though IMO. It focuses way too little on Geralt and suffers from major pacing issues, jumping around all over the place in time. Knowing that the series got off to such a poor start (and a Polish developer I know says it doesn't get much better) is another reason I'm not excited for the new book. But I suppose I have to read it sometime.

Witcher 3  is my most anticipated game that's multi by far next year.

Exclusive wise It's a toss up between Quantum Break and Halo 5.

Yes, the XB1 has come a long way since It's initial DRM, TV, TV fest reveal. With Mattrick gone everything has been up hill. They've taken feedback very well and outside of raw graphical power they can match or beat Sony at pretty much everything having the same price point.

so I thought the whole "playable female character" with ubisoft was blown way out of proportion but this is funny.....Sunset Overdrive just revealed they'll have playable female characters

It's kind of too easy of a jab, but that is pretty slick.

Hey, just because nobody has mentioned it in this thread, Sixty Second Shooter is really good!  For $5, it's a fun little distraction.  Very addicting.

Not I. Notifications were popping up and staying on screen for me last night in the retail version of EA Sports UFC. Other types of notifications such as party invites and achievements seemed to be functioning normally.
seems like hard reboot fixed the problem like every problem i ever had which is good
I was having the same issue whenever I would get an achievement. Friend notifications would also stay on longer than normal but eventually go away. Hard reboot wouldn't clear it for me. Happened for a couple days up until Thursday. Don't know why it is finally functioning now. I am not in the beta program.

Anyone mind upvoting my feedback?

http://xbox.uservoice.com/forums/251651-smartglass/suggestions/6084413-shortcuts-for-commands-features

Shortcuts for Commands / Features

Adding the ability to create shortcuts/macros in Smartglass.

Examples:
-"Xbox, Record That" via a shortcut key in Smartglass.
-Instead of having to load up the Game DVR application to record the past x amount of time in a game, being able to create a shortcut for set intervals.

This could be used for those who do not have Kinect to quickly navigate the Xbox One. In addition, it can also streamline applications like the Game DVR so that users won't have to "pause" during a multiplayer game to record time periods that are greater than 30 seconds.

Yeah good idea, voted.

I'm going to find out how much not having an Internet connection is going to hamper this system by the end of this week. Unfortunately it appears I have to move back home and that's capped Internet with Verizon. Well it was fun folks. Still looking forward to Dragon Age and Sunset Overdrive.

Safe travels, homeboy. Sorry to hear you won't have full internet for the system. But I think you're feedback in this type of situation will be valuable to the CAG X1 masses, so let us know how it goes.

Sorry to hear your situation is changing! Is Verizon the only available ISP in the area, or just the one your parents have chosen?
