Comic Book Discussion Thread (Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, Top Cow, IDW, Indy, etc)

I didn't say I wanted the Flash tv show crammed into a two hour movie. I want an original stories for the movies, starring the actors from the tv shows. Why is that so hard to understand?

Anybody get the news about the WB Movie Division's plans for the next few years? Don't expect Grant Gustin or Stephen Amell to play their roles in the theater. I swear the idiocy of movie execs.
Meh. I was annoyed at first that the tv shows would remain separate, but honestly it's for the best. I could definitely see the shows take a dip in quality once they have to start working around events that happen in the movies. Everyone involved with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. basically twiddled their thumbs until The Winter Solider came out so they could do the truly interesting things they knew they would eventually get to do. I don't want that happening on Arrow and Flash.

It would be cool if Gustin and Amell got to play their characters in a movie-specific continuity, but that would never happen anyway. The general consensus is that it would be too confusing to the general audience, and honestly I'd agree. I know way too many people who would bitch about the fact the shows haven't "caught up with" the movies.

Because we get a better pay off of having better explained and written stories that can where ever they want on a weekly basis and can lead to a big overarching story? Plus from a business stand point of exec's or whatever it would be stupid for them just to have a movie with character's pre established in a TV show and hope that the audience who doesn't watch the show will catch on with immediately what's going on. Especially when they're making big multi-million dollar franchises and need it to be as accessible as possible for people to commit to future films.

Two words alternate endings. All those Kamen Rider movies had great successes with those kinds of stories and even filmed them while making their 50 episode series. Oh well, I guess one shouldn't overestimate the intelligence of the general populace. Why else do they keep giving Michael Bay money.

So, make it more confusing to everyone involved? How or what would that benefit anyone and in which case why even have them there in first place if you're going to make a divide? And the Kamen Rider or really the Japanese movie and TV industry is NO WHERE near the machine of American blockbusters enough so to where you can't compare the two. You literally can't. Those Kamen Rider films and shows and every other anime series to movie is made on a WAAAY smaller budget plus they only cater to the fans of the show whom predominately are all in that one country. It's not made for a global market and really alot of films depend on thing's like film review's where whenever movies based on show's or whatever make it to films, they get savaged by critics because they have no idea what's going on which also hurts revenue.

Plus those Kamen Rider films? Highest grossing one is Kamen Rider Decades with little over $21 million, while Transformers: Age of Extinction made around $27 million. They're just as bad as us.

Oh man, awesome! Thank you!

In all fairness they have two different strategies, with some different things at stake. The only thing that makes them comparable is that they are the Big Two for comics and they have properties they want on TV and in Movies.

Marvel hasn't had much success on live action series, and one could say up until the last few years that their animated properties were extremely hit or miss. Marvel is under control of the House of Mouse, and both Marvel and their daddy wanted to use their large character base to get into television as it was widely left to DC. They built a large expansive movie universe that was very successful and has decided to spin off of that universe to try and help give their TV properties a built in audience. It's not a bad way to build your television properties but it does hinder storytelling as SHIELD has proven. They went with the best plan they saw available and to be honest their fans expected a lot of cross connectivity so they probably figure they had a better chance of survival with the built in connectivity. One big problem they can have is if a movie bombs that they've planned part of a story through a series or a character from a movie into a series and it bombs, they either scrap it entirely or work heavily to try and fix it. They seem to have some form of story/continuity control which helps keep things straight and lessens possible problems that could go from one medium to another. The problems can still happen though.

DC has had much better success over the long term history with their properties across animation, live action and cinema. They've seen their properties outside of Batman in the cinema not do so well. They saw the money Marvel was able to pull in and wanted to pull it in too and see the shared movie universe as a way to hopefully buff up attendance. It's an interesting theory and a gamble. Though they are using the dark/gritty approach to their heroes by evidence/rumor which is going to be contested on if it was the right way to go. Their TV properties, unlike Marvel, have almost always gotten a good audience and don't need to tie in to the movies. They don't want to possibly poison/neuter either the movie or TV side. They have a hero who doesn't do well on the big screen but planned a series with him, boom that is done. They take the character or stories from a TV series and bring that into a movie that bombs then that is tainted.

I believe both companies have pros and cons to their strategies and both are going with the best available to them based on their strengths.

On Amell not being in the movies, I'm fine with that. Honestly the Arrow show may be the least affected by any of this as it doesn't appear they have a plan for a Green Arrow movie currently or to have him in the Justice League movie either.

With WB having both a Flash TV show and Flash movie coming out with different actors, I'm curious if for the movie they're going to take a slight route from the TV show to avoid a bit of confusion and just turn the movie Flash into Wally West or Bart Allen.

If they have any form of forsight, that would be the way to go since they want to keep the TV/Movie universe separate. This way they can keep the properties separate but stable. No matter what though, there will be small amounts of confusion for some

Death of Wolverine didn't ruffle any feathers here, huh?

What's the over/under on his return? 6 months?
I say more than that. Peter Parker was dead for like 2 years I think? They are probably gonna stretch it out for a while since they have like the next 6 months tied up with Wolverine retrospective stuff and flashbacks about Wolverine.

His overall death was kind of anti-climatic though.

One thing I will say - since they resurrected Nightcrawler, there is no reason for any character to stay dead. They should've already gone to Heaven and brought Wolverine home like they did Nightcrawler. This is also shows what a jerk Professor X is. He is just up there in Heaven and when everyone went to Heaven he just telepathically chatted with Wolvie for a minute and that was it. He didn't care that the X-men had split apart, were fighting the Avengers or that Red Skull had used an ice cream scooper to get his brain and telepathic powers to take over the world.

Onto other comics. Still loving TMNT. Bebop and Rocksteady are pretty bad ass.

Off topic - does anyone know how someone schedules a sketch with an artist at a con. I asked this a few months ago and people said they schedule it. How does that process go? Do you like e-mail them and schedule something? Do they just give you a price for it or something? I'd really like to get a nice Eastman sketch at some point. The quick doodle-sketches he did at the Cons for me were awesome, but I'd like something a little more to frame and put on the wall.

When's the next x-men movie due out? 2 months after it gets out of theaters.
2 Months after? I'd say once the first trailer hits they're going to start the "Wolverine Returns!" crossover event.

And how did Wolverine die? Overexposure?
Zing!

With how pissy Marvel has been with Fox on Fantastic Four and the whole mutants thing I don't see them doing anything that could even be seen as perceived as helping promote the movie.

Good point, unless they bring Wolverine back as a non-Mutant since it's like he's only an X-Man now or whatever.

I think the people who believe it don't have good enough evidence, although if they were right, then marvel actually doing would also be dumb.

They've confirmed the closing of Fantastic Four books for the reasoning of movies and lagging sales. About the fantastic four item

a result of Disney’s highest single shareholder and Marvel CEO Isaac Perlmutter’s anger with Fox Studios over negotiations regarding the film-and-related rights to The Fantastic Four, that Marvel would cancel the Fantastic Four comic rather than provide any promotion, however small it might be, towards the Fox Studios film. Merchandise and licenses were scrapped and even Fantastic Four posters in the offices were pulled down lest Perlmutter see one and have his ire raised.
Chris Claremont has stated that they are no longer allowed to create any new mutants/X-men due to them being able to be used by Fox. While they will not flatout cancel the X-men series as they are a big piece of their comics division I definitely see them having characters disappear for a while as an added bonus of dicking over Fox.

Chris Claremont talked with Len Wein, Marc Bernardin and Heath Corson about his and Len's history in comic books a few months ago at Phoenix Comic Con for the Nerdist Podcast. I just got round to listening to the audio (and you can as well, below).

Something unreported however until now, was when asked about creating new characters,?Chris Claremont said,

"I have to say quite honestly as I understand it now the X department is forbidden to create new characters.

(SHOCK RESPONSE)

"Well... who owns them?

"All because all new characters become the film property of Fox.

"There will be no X-Men merchandising for the foreseeable future because, why promote Fox material?"
Forty-two minutes in... but you should listen to the whole thing. Chris Claremont currently writes the X-Men comic book?Nightcrawler, with a new issue out tomorrow.

We have reported this character-creating issue before now, but this is the first time I've heard an X-book creator confirm it publicly. We've also been told though that if you can create new characters under the guise of a Marvel Now style event, then they can be attributed to Marvel Now and not to an Xbook... so Marvel gets to keep the film rights.

I don't think FF would have been cancelled if it had good sales, also I'm not following any of the X-books, but people have said Bendis has made several new mutant characters and even claremont in his nightcrawler series. Also Marvel is doing AXIS which is a new event with X-Men characters. I'm not saying they aren't shifting focus, but the changes aren't as drastic as people make it out to be.

Saw the Flashpoint Paradox movie, and wow it is a huge bummer. They even went further than Frank Miller with creating a really dark Batman. I hope this does not get repeated for the tv series. I have got to read the comic.

Y'know, I think Injustice may be my favorite book. I read the entirety of Year Two the other night in one sitting, and there just wasn't a single moment that I didn't enjoy about it. Even the annual, which featured 2 fairly pointless stories, had some good moments. Will definitely upgrade to the hardcover editions. The series probably features the most well-written version of Harley Quinn in quite some time, and the humor is hilarious while the violence is quite shocking - particularly when the Sinestro Corps are involved. I won't be waiting quite as long to read Year 3, especially with Constantine being featured.

I liked what they did with Thomas Wayne in the Flashpoint comic. Have not seen the animated movie, but was not in love with the trailer.

I liked how the Thomas Wayne Batman was very different than Bruce. I mean despite all his "grittiness" and insane propensity for gratuitous violence and firearms, it was pretty cool that he was willing to do everything he could to help the Flash (just as long as he didn't show it.) What a softie!

The Flash is extremely heavy on foreshadowing tonight. Jesus. I really enjoyed Agents of SHIELD, especially
Mockingbird showing up. The more characters out there the better.

I forgot to watch flash. I think they replay them though.
Not tonight, The 100 is back.

Anyway, can someone explain to me where Iron Heights is if it's a state prison used by Starling AND Central? I thought Starling was like Seattle, and Central was a midwestern city like Chicago or somewhere in Kansas, separated by 600 miles. I find it cool that in the events of the Undertaking, despite all those criminals getting out of Iron Heights, Barry's dad didn't escape even though he probably could. Unless there's more than one Iron Heights, and they're run like Big Belly Burger.

Yes. That one was dark.

You'll have to resort to cwtv.com, like me. My DVR decided not to record it last night for some reason...

So, you guys see tv Mockingbird's costume? I like it. It'll be great to finally have a superhero-ish costume worn by one of the cast of S.H.I.E.L.D. Plus apparently the Age of Ultron trailer debuts during the next episode.

And dropping Axis and decided just to add Wicked and the Divine to my monthly pull list instead. Love Uncanny Avengers, but fuck it feels like any other Marvel crossover.

Just found out about the TMNT/Ghostbusters crossover today. Wanna check out that and Deathstroke #1. Wanted to get Birthright #1 last weekend, but my local shop was sold out. Again. It's a small place run by 2 college students, so I understand. Just sucks that it's the only one close to my house.

so in the new avengers trailer why does thanos look like a robot? Did spider man having bad reviews make them change the villain?

It does seem like Marvel Studios is taking an awfully long time to do anything with Thanos. I swear, in his next appearance the guy at least needs to stand up and do a few laps around his throne. He's gonna develop a blood clot before they give him any real attention!

Also, maybe it's just me, but Ultron's eyes look a little too kind for a soulless genocidal robot. Just sayin'.

And isnt Avengers 3 rumored to be Civil War? They cant possibly think thats the best place for him right? So are they shifting him towards Guardians of the Galaxy instead? Not really sure what the big plan is with him.

Walking Dead is now
I Am Legend??
*sigh*

I think I'm going to stop following this monthly and just wait for the tpb's from now on.

Good article. Yeah, my excitement for Thanos died when the credits rolled on Guardians of the Galaxy, the moment I realized his biggest appearance so far was making a quick threat and then sitting there while his henchman talked smack and killed his butler.

No that's Cap 3.

But with Thanos, aren't they setting up some sort of Infinty Gauntlet adaptation?
I think the fact that Marvel Studios won't come out and say when he'll get his time in the spotlight, and in what movie, is a big mistake. They're not giving us a big enough carrot to chase to make up for keeping us in the dark.

In what way? Mind spoiling it for me? I know there was a time skip recently, but I haven't been able to find any details. I don't read the comics, but I do like to read up on the events and imagine how the show will take those ideas and find the least interesting way to present them.

Zombies can now talk and are intelligent. People are the new boogiemen. If they do something new with it, it might be worth following, but I Am Legend was and still is a pretty revolutionary take on it.

I'm referring to the book btw.

No they aren't.

It's normal people who wear the skins of zombies. It lets them blend in. It is pretty much taking the original idea of covering yourself in zombie goop just that much farther. It seems like they have gone quite crazy too. Like a month ago it showed the one guys peeling off the zombie mask off the person he had killed.

I can't really imagine Kirkman going that direction with smart zombies. At least I hope he doesn't.

That information is two or three issues behind, Dokstarr has the correct answer...

Hmm. Damn. Something like that could have actually benefited the show, I think. Aside from the occasional cool and/or emotional moment, it's fairly mindnumbing the majority of the time. Oh well.

Anyhoo, what are the general thoughts on Flash? It has continually managed to be more enjoyable to me than Arrow ever since it debuted - and that is in no way a slam against Arrow. The Flash is just a really fun show. Although I do have a nitpick about the last episode.
"He used to say we were like fire and ice." REALLY? Ha, apparently Ronnie was also clairvoyant. That one felt like it was straight out of the Gotham writers' guide to foreshadowing.
I'm constantly impressed by the quality of the special effects. The sparks that would shoot off of Barry when he came to a sudden stop were a nice touch. Also, this probably would have been the perfect occasion to use that gas mask attachment that originally came with his suit. Just sayin'. Who knows where that ended up...

I suppose we'll soon see where Constantine skews on the quality spectrum for DC tv shows. I'm curious how the pilots ends now, considering the reshoots they did.
