Chromecast is weird. I don't want to drain my phone battery in order to play a movie or whatever. Strange. Or maybe I don't really understand how it works. Does it actually have Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc, as built-in apps?

Talk about BORING! Tyler probably hates that game more than Dead Nation and BOI combined. Flower is soooo fuck ing boring. I played it because I think we got it for free back in the beginning of Plus. And I wasnt buying a shit ton of games at the time so I actually played it for much longer than I should have.

Yes.

Your phone is the remote. The app actually launches on the chromecast and does the actual streaming. You just use your phone or tablet to control the chromecast.

Fire tv is same concept it just has an actual remote. I like the chromecast a lot better though.

Chromecast does have some built-in "apps" but there's no way to control it without another device. Everything you play on the Chromecast you have to pull up on your phone/tablet/PC first and then cast it from there.

I use it more from my laptop and Chromebook. Find something you want to watch on Netflix or Youtube and send it to the Chromecast. You can then turn your computer off if you want. You only need it to pause or change what you are watching. Many people like it better then dealing with their TV, PS3, BluRay etc UI

Avia for Android works. It crashed pretty often when I tried it a few months back, though.

I have a NAS but I can grab that stuff directly from my Openelec box. I also have an android app called Yaste (XBMC remote) which has casting abilities from my phone\tablet for anything so I think I have all bases covered at this point. The Chromecast will probably only get better but even Amazon and Google seem to be shooting themselves in the foot with having both the TV boxes and the sticks.

On a separate note, just finished my phone interview. I was on the phone with her for a little over half an hour.

She told me the pay, training, and the next steps. Apparently, from her I then have to do role-play with the supervisor, then come in for a face to face after that with two supervisors. Then once those are all clear its background check and take a sample of my hair for drug test.

Seems like an awful lot to do before their start date of 1.6.14.

That still sounds weird, and I hate how phones will go to sleep so when you want to pause or whatever you have to unlock your phone and then pause, instead of just pressing a button. Having a dedicate remote is definitely a plus for the Fire TV Stick.

Chromecast supports plex if you know what that is. Does streaming from local media through it.

 
I'm trying to last minute "buy" the Games with Gold and the Xbox store is not behaving well for me. It might be that it's blocked at work or something, though. If so, I'm glad they don't block the PSN store….

If you are like me, I gotta look for the damn remote half the time. Always have my phone with me and have the ability to search on my phone versus having to type it out using an onscreen k/b is way easier.

I thought it was really cool. Levels are procedurally generated, so they do end up looking samey after awhile. They also sometimes put so many enemies in a room that stealth doesn't always feel like a viable option. Don't think you'd have a whole lot of regret at the sale price, but we all know it will go cheaper in time.

I am 90% sure my phone has the Netflix controls on the lock screen. But yeah some people like a real remote. I recently picked up a Roku 3 to mess around with. That comes with a pretty nice remote.

The Fire TV Stick has an app to do that type of thing I think. However it's only out for Android right now so I haven't been able to try it yet. iOS is "coming soon".

Was that the two little girls that stabbed a third girl after a sleep over? I watched a 20/20 special on that a few months back. At least I started to. I never realized how fucking awful 20/20 specials are. The interviewer kept asking the most retarded questions of the parents. "So how did you feel when you found out your daughter got stabbed x amount of times by her friends?". I wish I could remember more specific ones because they were all ridiculous.

Yeah plex is an off-shoot of XBMC, which openelec is based on as well. Openelec is just a stand-alone version for HTPC purposes. It's cool that the Chromecast supports it, the Fire Stick does as well I just don't have a use for it anyway.

XBOX SUCKS! In all honesty though I don't what happened but no one is working on their web store anymore, it used to be good and now it never works right regardless of blocking. So bad.

That whole quote I just quoted.

It has netflix etc on the stick. Your phone/tablet/pc is just the remote. The stick launches its OWN netflix etc and THEN streams DIRECTLY TO THE STICK.

Your pc and chromecast are not both streaming at the same time.

And yes, I'm aware that you can use other methods of streaming to the Chromecast, Plex being an obvious one. It's more work. The simplest solution for casting to the Chromecast is what I was referring to with the lag; opening the video in Chrome and then casting to the Chromecast directly from there. When you do that it mirrors the video stream both on the PC and on the Chromecast (unless an update has fixed this--I haven't tried it in a while.)

I had to access the store from my phone. It worked OK there. I guess work is blocking transactions on that store, either intentionally or unintentionally.

If you are casting a tab (meaning you're casting a webpage that has a video on it) then yea thats laggy. But if you are using the actual netflix, hulu, hbo go, etc. thats not even remotely (get it?) how it works.

Yea and it sreams in HD, maybe his internet is slow Kilik? I have heard great things from people with it... only negatives are that is requires its own power source, and there are not enough apps... but $35 for a $40 credit, thats a few movies either bought or rented. Really contemplating it for the in laws, but not sure if they will actually use it.

When I said it mirrors I was talking about local videos, not Netflix/Hulu/etc.. I was listing issues with it; first I talked about the need to have a second device to cast from, then I talked about lag when casting downloaded videos. With the wording and sequence I can see how you'd have gotten confused about what I meant there, though the later posts I made were more explicit about what I meant.

AFAIK when you play a video in Chrome (not stream, but play) it still mirrors because there's no way to cast it except with the Mirror Tab option.

I remember as a kid, after all the TGIF shows were finished for the night, 20/20 would come on and I'd be like "Who watches this shit?", Twenty-plus years later, I still say that sometimes.

Yup, good ol waukesha, wi. I haven't seen the special on it though. Also there's a creepy slender man mural under a bridge in Milwaukee where I go to drop off train crews at work. I get the chills everytime I go down there at night. Bums sleep down there too.
