A little late to the party here but I found TWD to be too... emotionally draining. Like every time I try to play I'd get through a chapter and have to put the game down and get myself a drink because it was so goddamn depressing. I mean, I liked the show enough. But this doesn't even feel like a game anymore, it's like an exercise in seeing how much emotional distress you can put up with... I end up feeling like I need to play Hello Kitty Adventure to cleanse my palate.

And that's after playing the first two chapters. Maybe I'm not cut out for horror games.

It wasn't just you. Every decision you make usually results in someone dying. It's a lot more stressful than real life, where you don't get along with certain dumbasses and have no qualms about sacrificing them for a little Asian kid.

It's like they want you to feel. Not cool.

When I did Season 1, every episode was an emotionally draining roller coaster of depression + death. You're not alone here.

If TWD is getting to you like that, then the game is doing something right. Not many games do this and make you really emotional + care, even though they might try to. I think that's b/c the way the game is so well done - with the voice-acting, the quality of writing in the dialogue, the events, and the actual decision-making. And since this is pretty much the game's main focus - they better nail this stuff, or else the (so-called) "game" would basically fall apart.

The puzzles ain't difficult and aren't really puzzles; and the action sequences are decent enough. But, they're intense and there to push the story, plot & character development forward. Action sequences happen more often in TWD S2, BTW.

B/c is can be draining after one episode, it might be best if you say play one Episode per day or every few days.

Played and finished it this week, enjoyed it a lot.
I also really dug Spec Ops: The Line - SP campaign. For that type of shooter, it has some of the better character development, story + plot of these type of military shooters.

Never touched the MP, though.

It gets worse. There's one episode in Season 2 that had a couple of REALLY hard parts for me and I mostly was okay with the first season even.

Honestly I think I am done with it. It was good for what it was for a few episodes but it's just a never ending stream of people dying and depressing stuff with no light at the end of the tunnel but they just keep doing it because $$$.

I just don't think I can get on board long term for something I already know can never have a satisfying conclusion to the narrative. Not for such a heavily story based game anyhow.

You might want to see somebody about that, bro.

The Dying Light/Lifeless Planet combo extravaganza at IndieGala just dropped a fiver to $34.99.

Probably comes with Realms of the Haunting as well, because who doesn't need extra dupes...  Might lateybro this so i'll have something to do with my new video card, assuming newegg decides to stop cancelling my orders because I can't remember my phone number.   :oldman:

So the devs of Infestation/WarZ have a new game called Romero's Aftermath (not sure if they even have Romero's permission to use his name, but we'll see how that works out).

If you own Infestation and qualify you can get a free key to the Alpha/Beta or whatever.  It's not on Steam, but still a nice perk and not sure if eventually you'll get a Steam key.

To qualify you either have to:

Be a founder and have played over 50 hours

or

Spent at least $25 on in game gold

or

Played at least 100 hours

I super saiyan fakeybroed the shit out of this one buying it before it was even on Steam so I just had to "play" a few more idle hours on Steam to qualify.  I assume most of you will have to "play" the 100 hours.  Just be sure you have an account registered and tied to your Steam account before you "play."

Website to check your eligibility and get your key for the new game is:

So all the survival genre stuff... is there finally one not still in Early Access nonsense that's worth a look?  Really wish one would become feature complete to see what they're like.

Don't Starve? The Multiplayer version is still Early Access though, but the SP version is done.

Other than that can't really think of a ton not in Early Access. developers love starting these sorts of games but finishing them not so much.

I don't know, not really an expert on that genre. Cheaplikeafox would probably know better.

Multiplayer survival games run on the hopes and dreams of millions of fans specific to that genre.  Once a survival game leaves EA, those fans no longer can rally beneath the "It's Not Finished, It Will Get Better" banner, and they're stuck with a buggy mess.  They abandon ship and jump on the Next Big Thing.

Watched some of the video on the willyousurvive site.  Looks identical to Infestation, which was...okay.  Only need to idle that for 83 more hours to get an alpha invite!   :speaktothehand:

Most of them have tons of issues. Like indef said above, even when they're no longer in EA that doesn't mean everything was fixed.

Like Motoki said, Don't Starve is one of the best ones, but it's not a traditional survival game in the first person perspective which is probably what you're looking for.

I heard a lot of good stuff about Rust, but despite fakeybroing it I haven't played it yet. Seems too...trendy for me right now. Weird, I know.

The ones to avoid? Dead Linger. Practically nothing has changed in the two years I've owned it and the game is basically a shitty demo.

Miscreated looks cool, but server issues have prevented me from playing it for more then 2 minutes so I would avoid it.

The Forest is cool, but still EA and still tons of issues.

So far the best one has been 7 Days to Die. It's still EA but the devs have kept working on it, it was the most playable from the jump, and it has only gotten better. I'd strongly recommend you check it out if you want to consider a game in EA.

State of Decay is really good too, but it again is not your traditional survival game.

Edit:

And as proof, Aftermath just froze my computer when I tried to play it the first time.

Someone gave me a coupon for Salt which is a sort of procedurally generated survival game, so I FakeySnakeyEyesBroed it a while back. Looks maybe okay if incomplete; it's Early Access of course. Does seem at least a bit different than the zombie/hyperrealistic stuff. I guess I should probably play it one day. :p

Screenshots and concept kind of make me think of Daggerfall (pre-historic Elder Scrolls game with a near infinite procedural landscape to wander) a bit, but without the shitty 90s sprites and with an uber bright dayglo color scheme.

7 Days to Die is the best of the bunch. The devs are quite active and should be releasing alpha 11 any day now, featuring an upgrade to unity 5. Most of the rest are "survival" games in that you are really just trying to avoid griefers with far too much time on their hands. 7 days allows you to play on a large server with pve or pvp, on a local private server with friends, or single player. When setting up a game there are also a bunch of options to make the game as easy or difficult as you would like. I think they key to their success with this one is the constant involvement and giving the player the option to play the style they want.

So Aftermath finally let me in.  Took about 3 minutes to load.  Then I saw a zombie, walked over to it and started punching the shit out of it and it didn't even react or attack.  Then the game booted me.

I will say it does look better than Infestation and the zombie did too.

Also, Minecraft.  Always forget about that one, but that's really the best survival game I've ever played.

Also, with their usual cryptic bullshit, the Killing Floor devs have implied there will be some sort of reward for KF owners who buy KF2 dependent on how long you've played KF.  They called it a "feather in your cap" and knowing them it'll probably be just that, some sort of badge or shit on your char that shows you were an x level KF player.  Either way, you might want to "play" that one a little longer too in case it turns out to be something good (doubtful though).

Neverending stream of people dying and depressing stuff? Sounds like what happened to the show.

Is it still that popular? I thought its wave had sort of crested with how many new games in the same genre are out now. I played it a year ago but haven't been back since.

I think that my own issue with the genre is that it's either so unpopulated that survival is trivial or so overpopulated that it's more of a Hunger Games death match than someone scratching out long term survival. That was the biggest issue I think I ultimately had with Rust: I could play on unpopulated servers where you only had wolves and bears to deal with (easy) or else you couldn't go ten feet without some death patrol clan all over you and it became less survival in a "build a life" sort of way and more just First Person Shooter Action. The active part of the map was pretty small as well so that didn't help.

It's probably impossible to populate a game with players to a point where there's a sense of danger and yet you don't have someone crossing through your front yard every thirty seconds. Unfortunately, that's probably what I would need to be interested in the genre again. Either that or a single player game sort of like a more realistic and first person Don't Starve. Someone create a Don't Starve/Stalker style mash-up with procedurally generated maps upon starting a game and I'll totally buy that in a bundle.

I would totally be down for a single-player (or co-op) first person survival game with well-developed enemy AI and crafting systems.  I don't care if it's zombies, post-apocalyptic bands of marauders, or whatever.  Realistic graphics or Borderlands-style would be ideal.

3rded. The flexibility and attention is great. I'm on a break from 7 Days until a11, but I played the bejesus out of the default map. Before this couldn't have imagined myself enjoying something in alpha so much. The griefing thing is vital too, and why something like Rust isn't for me. I've had 3 multiplayer experiences with 7 Days, two different co-ops with friends and that was great, and one on a publicly designated PVE server. After two days of exploring, connecting with a few other people, and setting up a rough base, a trio of hackers swept through griefing. The mods really can't do much about it, and so without a single player experience to enjoy, it's not worth it.

Well the show doesn't [customspoiler=SPOILER - Seriously don't read if you haven't played TWD Season 2 Episode 2 and intend to at some point]force you to personally kill a damned dog or personally sew up a gash on yourself with no anesthetic while playing the role of a little girl who is screaming in agonizing pain[/customspoiler].

Shit, I forgot to add waifus. Gotta repopulate the earth, you know

Speaking of Killing Floor 2, PC Gamer has uploaded a video of a full match at 60 fps (~34 minutes long):

So, these terms fakeybro and lateybro... any particular reason for using the jargon? It is code for doing something unethical to acquire a game, hence the need to conceal it? Or just some sort of 'leetsteemer' portmanteau?

Today is the first time I've encountered either term on CAG, so curious as to whether there's an infestation of SD members or something similar...

Well if you are buying something at or near full price and it's not on release then you can't be Fakeybroing. But it's not a true (PC) CAG either. So therefore you are Lateybroing. Which is actually kind of worse than Fakeybroing because at least with Fakeybroing you get some lame new shiny bragging rights and the game is all hot shit of the minute then instead of old news that you paid too much for.

It's just an inside joke. If we find a member of the forum is known for doing a particular thing then we start using their name in verb form.

So Snakeybro was a CAG (I think he got banned) who was known for buying games at full MSRP on release and then chiding us for wasting our money on bundle games we don't play so we called him a Fake CAG and started using Fakeybro as a term to mean pre-ordering or paying MSRP for a game on release.

Gilby is a member with memory problems who routinely forgets to buy bundles before they expire and then posts asking if anyone has an extra so if you miss a bundle or forget to buy it then you have "Gilby'd" it or pulled a Gilby.

Da fuq. Why would you do this when Dying Light was around $8 from the Russia 4 pack, and Lifeless Planet was bundled?

At this point I would explain Madjokiing except the first rule of Madjokiing is You Don't Talk About Madjokiing.

I need to get back to Dying Light, but it was pretty cool from what I played (which isn't much) and it looked nice so it'd be something nice to run on a new system.

Yes, I am playing fakeybro's advocate.
