This thread will attempt to provide a place to discuss past/present/future PC gaming deals. While mainly focusing on Steam games, any standout sales may also be presented. I will not be updating every Daily/Weekly/etc. sale. The tools to help individuals become a smarter shopper will be provided below.

See this POST for links to store sale pages, threads of interest and other tools to help you become a more informed PC game shopper.

Yeah, but it was like this even before the deal threads were consolidated and you know it.

This was just condensing an already small amount of threads into an even smaller amount (we still have other PC threads, just very, very few).
ok so what you are suggesting is we make a thread for every pc deal...that will cut down on the off topic stuff and spread it between threads just like the console shit

I just really haven't seen any off-topic stuff in any console thread aside from the PSN thread a while back. I don't think that's the issue.

I just think we're more bored here and friendlier with each other than most of the other threads.

Even when I was new to this thread, it was a completely different beast. Lots more image posting, lots more off-topic.

Anyways, that's the last I'll say about it a la Neuro's suggestion.

can you change your title to Apologist?

Looks like the mods need to post some diagrams and charts. Staying on topic regarding deals appears to be like voodoo witchcraft rocket science to a few people. Maybe a flowchart? Is this a deal ----> YES ----> post in this thread -----> ELSE -----> post in crap err offtopic thread.

Bruticis for mod

I mean, I guess I consider PC game talk still on-topic, same with the console threads discussing different games on that platform. I'm more referring to the Mexican food talk we had the other day and stuff like that. That's always been here, and it just seems like something specific to this thread.

Hey now, I told you that I don't have a problem with the off-topic chatter. I'm not the one reporting the thread or telling anyone to stop.

But the excuse of "But the other threads do it!" is paper-thin and just not true, so I'm calling shenanigans.

There's definitely an adjustment between this thread and the various other console threads. Different environment entirely and that's not just because this thread is now a super-thread.

The other threads do it though. I just checked the XBL thread and most of the page was guys giving other guys advice on internet service. Yeah, it's marginally related to gaming with DLs but still totally OT in a deal about XBL.

I have my settings to like 1000 posts a page and it took me a good while to find anything remotely on topic. It's the same stuff. We might joke more often but most of the talk here is PC game related in one way or another just the same.

I guess that's new. I remember a time where people got really pissed about any OT stuff in there and people were legitimately concerned about the thread getting nuked/closed.

I know because I was one of the people who tried to talk about OT stuff.

I blame the Facebook crap.

You probably won't find stuff like that in the million other console threads though.

I kind of have to agree with Bobby, at least to the extent that the same question getting asked by a hundred different pre-teens because they don't want to read three posts back is technically on topic.

The console threads may seem like they're filled with a bunch of illiterate morans, with all the $5 off is a deal! and each-item-get's-its-own-post bullshit, but.... well, yeah.

The PC threads (and perhaps the dedicated XBL and PSN threads... maybe) are the only threads in the Deals section of cag that has any sort of community. The rest are just deal posts for console players (and the idiots who post PC deals that somehow don't know that there's a virtually dedicated PC thread).

The PC thread(s) are usually crazy off topic, and that's awesome. It gives me reason to check the site more often than I would otherwise, just to read the silly banter and butthurt that goes on.

You dipshits are always a good time

It's the nature of the threads. I went back a page on the XBL one and it's a guy having his baby (congrats) and talk about gamerscore and port forwarding, etc. Some of it is gaming related, but not OT on XBL. PSN thread is the same since I go there sometimes and can never find deals without usually just googling the Sony weekly blog post.

When you have one really long rolling forever thread, it's just natural people start sort of hanging and talking. When you have deals like "Console Game for $9.99 at Target tomorrow" there's less room for it. The thread dies before anything really happens. Same with the weekly ad threads. This community pushed us towards a consolidated thread by bitching about every standalone PC thread.

Dozens of pissed off CAGs now combing every thread in sight with an abacus in hand.
You do realize you probably have never posted anything remotely on topic, right?

Oh, absolutely agreed. There's always been a ton of lazy idiots in the XBL thread that we've had to spell out everything in the OP.

And even then, we'd still get basic questions all the time.

+1 to the last bit though. It took a while to get used to it, but it is a lot of fun.

$5 for a game (that normally goes for $60 MSRP) is a REAL deal.

Thanks. I appreciate that.

Actually, there is a bit of community in the main Vita and 3DS threads. Not nearly as cohesive as here, of course, but let's not ask impossible things of the peasants.

And every now and then a sort of rudimentary one pops up in the more or less permanent retailer threads (like the Five Below thread), because apparently those people like revealing very specifically where they live so they can be pleased when others live nearby. Like the thing going on here with Bobby and Makman. It creeps me out.

What's the topic du jour?  People QQ'ing about threads not staying 'on topic?'  You don't even need a thread to follow Steam deals.  Log on to Steam and boom.  Are there really people who get testy when the OP isn't updated?  How lazy can you get?  But but... it takes three seconds to go to Steam's home page.  Moooooooooooooooooooooooooom.

So I came home and discovered that one of my case fans died (top exhaust - 140mm).  Fortunately, I keep a temperature readout on my keyboard so I saw right away that it was a balmy 52C at idle and didn't try playing anything and overheating it.  Best Buy had all of one case fan for sale, a 120mm with a CFM of... 40 :speaktothehand:

So I went to Tiger Direct and discovered that they are closing all of their stores (I guess they're keeping four) including the Naperville, IL location which is a little surprising since that's a warehouse store.  If they're shipping from there anyway, you'd think they'd keep a retail storefront but nope.  They have some "Up to an extra 30% off everything!" clearance going on so I was mildly interested.  Of course, most anything interesting was a whopping 10% off.  I looked at a 2TB WD Black drive for a moment before checking my phone and seeing that it was $30 cheaper on NewEgg even with the "clearance" discount (which sales tax would mostly wipe out anyway).  That sort of explains right there why Tiger Direct's stores ain't making them money.  I did pick up some assorted cables (50% off) but the cooling selection was bare of any 140mm fans.  I grabbed a 120mm Vortex PWM for under $10 with a CFM of 70 and that seems to be doing the trick.  Pain in the ass though now that Tiger Direct will be gone for little purchases like that; now I'll have to haul out to Micro Center or Fry's which is straining the definition of "local".

Oh, also their video games and software were 20% off so now this is on topic.

Tiger Direct has physical stores?

I only liked this post because Bobby did.

I'm still waiting for 75% off on Obscure. It was basically shovelware on consoles so I'm not paying a premium just because steam.
Glad I'm not the only one who thinks this. I bought it for around $25 years ago on the PS2 and hated the archaic controls. It wasn't the good kind of archaic that Resident Evil or Silent Hill was. Rather it was the "I don't know how to program" kind of controls. Though it was worth much more and so I sold it for around $40 last year, so it was good. Might pick this up just for the hell of it, but not until it hits 75%+ off.

Ugh this again....hi mod...bye mod

cya when another console peasant or SJW gets their underoos stuck

I have an idea though....lets all report the console threads so that they get the "off topic" spanking too....because it happens there they just don't have people hitting the report post button

how about you just ban the person reporting posts for being malicious that aren't instead of coming after the rest of us?
Don't be mad at him, Ms. Moderator. He's just been hitting the sauce again always forever.

I played Obscure from GOG the other day and the PC controls were fine. I hated the controls of the classic RE games with the turning bullshit, much preferred controls from action-survival games like Parasite Eve and Dino Crisis. At least I agree that it's pretty tame compared to most of the PC horror titles out there.

Speaking of which, I tried to remember why I still have Real Horror Stories installed on my computer. I opened it up and was assaulted by zoomed-in Google jpegs of "scary" things, then I clicked a spot with a hover hand 10 times before a cat shrieked and I went to the next level. Then I uninstalled it, because it's garbage.

OHMYGOD, BRING ME PARASITE EVE ON STEAM YOU ASSHOLES!!!!

Yeah, this is pretty much it right here. Everyone bitched and moaned about having each PC deal in its own thread and there was a big debate whenever EastX first started the Steam thread. In fairness, it was started at a time where Steam began running daily, and then weekly/weekend deals; Holiday/Summer Steam sales were new and important, and they generated a lot of interest. It was easy to miss a good deal.

Then bundles happened. Now Steam is largely (where this crowd is concerned) the favorite place to rest your games. Purchasing games directly from Steam is rarely discussed because it falls outside the scope of "deals". The problem with the individual bundle threads is that they're also pretty regular/predictable and the discussions in them inevitably fall into "I hate this bundle" or "I'm buying this bundle", with the occasional group buyer that always gets pointed to another thread in another sub forum.

The Steam thread is a game discussion thread now -- which is central to the topic of PC gaming -- and sometimes off topic stuff stems from 80-90 people constantly talking about games.

We don't have hundreds of stores to scam deals from. There aren't any complicated schemes that need an entire thread in which to unfold. We have a single platform (Steam is the one that matters to most) and a half dozen storefronts that matter. If there's no Mega Thread then the occasional deals get lost in a sea of console shenanigans. At least here there's a landing spot for them all, and a magnificent OP for those that can't be bothered.

This thread isn't exactly like the console threads. But then again, the state of retail in PC gaming isn't exactly like that of console gaming either.

Argh! I was so damn close!

:-({|=

My Steam library sits at 1989 games and Monday was my 8th birthday for my Steam account. I was aiming to hit the 2000 mark on the same day but the deals and bundles were tragic disappointments when I browsed through them this morning. Then I got distracted by the off-topic topic discussion which lead my mind away from gaming deals. Then I had to work.

After work I had to go to the grocery store and while I was there I found myself strolling down the liquor isle. When I checked out, the friendly cashier asked for my ID and if I was having a party. For which I tiredly replied with a common courtesy laugh and sarcasm, "of course, who doesn't party on Monday?" I think I just ended up confusing the cashier but the helper who bagged my items gave me a "Right on, breh!" For whatever reason I then suddenly remembered my lofty and admittedly pathetic goal for the day. Hit 2000!

On the drive home, while listening to a custom playlist of songs to make your forget it's really Monday, I again forgot about hitting 2000. Once home there were more distractions like drinking, cooking dinner, drinking, watching some sports, and getting distracted with text messages from friends. By this time the ship had sailed and the day had come and gone.

You know I guess I could have spent some Steam wallet on cheap crap earlier in the morning, but the majority of stuff had been cheaper or bundled before. Oh well. The dream is dead... for now. So thanks a lot for ruining and derailing my plans today, Mr/Mrs who ever decided to report this thread. Dumbass.

Fair enough. While I couldn't care less about the crazy burger pics (so long as it's on topic and not offensive), you're correct about the whack behavior. Please behave nicely towards each other. However, I'd still prefer that a deals forum thread focused on deals and was not used as the discussion thread.

I understand that, but so what if that's true? You all are pc gamers and as such, you don't need spoon-feeding; you know how to bookmark a page, use a forum search engine, and how to subscribe to a thread. You can easily move the chatter to the discussion forum, and when there's a deal, post it in here. When you log in, check your subscriptions and if you see that the deals thread has an update, pop in to see if it's any good. If not, just keep up with each other in the Steam Discussion thread.

Who ever complained, it was about malicious posts, not about being off topic. I came in to check the "malicious" posts, and when I did, *I* saw that there was as much off-topic chatter as on-topic. So don't be angry at the tattler for anything other than being sensitive to whatever was reported in the first place. If anyone is upset at my requesting that you all keep a deals forum thread about deals, be angry at me, and me alone.

As Hal pointed out, Cheapy appreciates the site traffic and referral and ad clicks. So don't worry about being "strictly moderated." This thread isn't on any kind of watch list. I'm simply making a request of you all, the same as I'd do if my attention was brought to another thread and i noticed similar off-topic behavior in a Deals Forum thread.

And with that, I'll leave you all yourselves.

A1000 for life, yo.
