If you do skip AC Unity, at least watch this. I thought this part was neato (spoilered for those of you who aren't this far along):
The optional supporting objectives idea in Unity was a really good idea too - there's one (I can't remember which) where if you help someone outside a heavily guarded building/palace then he'll set off fireworks behind the building for the whole mission which makes most of the guards inside watch them through the back doors/windows, making them all face one direction. I tried it both ways and it was a lot tougher to sneak around without the fireworks. That's pretty clever.
