This thread will attempt to provide a place to discuss past/present/future PC gaming deals. While mainly focusing on Steam games, any standout sales may also be presented. I will not be updating every Daily/Weekly/etc. sale. The tools to help individuals become a smarter shopper will be provided below.

Rebel Galaxy isnt even remotely a 4x game. If you are wanting a pretty basic 4x game either go with Civilization Revolution for phone/tablet/emu, or just go to Civ5. CivRev is a stripped down version of Civ and should help you get familiar with 4x concepts. Civ5 is a step above that in complexity but still pretty basic as far as 4x games go. But it does have the advantage over other games in that it is very well documented, has a crap ton of mods, plenty of youtube tutorials and Let's Play, and a very active community on Steam and fansites for walkthroughs, strategies and general help.

edit: talking base game Civ5, the expansions add a decent amount of complexity

It goes on sale pretty often, but usually 50% off is the max discount. All time low was $9.99 on Bundlestars a few months ago. I'd expect a similar discount down the line or maybe $7.49 at most. It was $7.49 on PSN but you needed to be a PS+ member to get that discount. I went ahead and bought it $12.49 for some family fun and it was a hit during the holidays, so much so that my brother bought it for his account so he could play it with his friends. If you have people to play with, Drawful is a lot of fun

 
Hot Random Krap is having a sale.  Games are either a little overpriced or suspiciously cheap.  I don't know how shady their keys are but $40 for Fallout 4 makes me guess "pretty shady".  Plus game come with extra bundle shit if you don't have enough Dead Bits in your life.

Also, their images for Cities:Skylines and Rocket League look as though they literally took a screenshot of someone else's store page.

Looking for a few thoughts on a problem I have...  The wife's hard drive in her laptop has been shot to shit.  Its been an issue for awhile but its continued to putter on.  All the diagnostics come back clean, minus the hard drive obviously, and while the laptop is slow as hell its pretty functional for what she wants/needs.  An internet browser with a real keyboard. (aka I don't think she could do what she needs to be able to do simple with a smart phone.)

The laptop might qualify as ancient, I've seen used allot of older tech so this might be based upon how old you are, as its a Dell Inspiron (1525, I think that's the number) built around 2008 and runs Vista... :rofl:  (We also bought it at Best Buy. :shock: )

Now, is it stupid to consider just replacing the hard drive..?  I still have the DVDs that came with it, pretty damn sure nothing that is needed for install is on the actually hard drive (as I said before, its had hard drive issues before), etc or should I assume this is the clear sign that the rest of the PCs components days are numbered?

I've looked at some cheap laptops... and it almost seems that the build quality has gotten worse and with a new HD this PC might last longer than some of those laptops.  Just really not sure.

Also would be interested in laptop recommendations...  Just cheap ones. 

 
How is ARK for someone who doesnt have a lot of experience with the Survival genre. I haven't really played anything except for the 2D game like Terraria. 

Seen on my feed some of the stuff posted by fellow CAGs that are playing and it looks interesting. 

Was also trying to debate between ARK and Rust. They seem to be the two most active games of that type.

What's your budget?

I usually just replace my laptop every few years because I run them to the ground, but I usually only pay $300-$350 for them so it's not a huge deal getting a new one every three years. Maybe if I bought a more expensive one it might last longer, but I just don't feel like doing so since I use it for work.

How important are the files she keeps on her computer? Meaning if you replaced the harddrive and it messed up would she lose important data? Or do you have her set up with some sort of cloud save feature?

HDDs fail so it failing I don't think has anything to do with the rest of the laptop. If she mainly uses the PC to browse and doesn't store anything important on it a cheap or refurb HDD might do the trick because I assume you probably wouldn't want to spend more than $50ish for it?

If you get into the $100 to $150 range you can get some nice windows or android tablets with keyboards. You can probably find dirt cheap laptops for $200-$250 and $300 will net you a pretty decent one with some patience.

Look into Hurtworld over Rust (it's just in the beginning stages but has a great artstyle and is much more smooth)

You can probably find Rust cheap somewhere since it was in a humble monthly. I wouldn't recommend it because it relies on PvP and the other players can be jerks.

ARK can be played solo and even in the PvP servers can still be fun due to the PvE elements.

(I do think that a SSD would take out the sluggishness she has to deal with.)

An SSD would be a good idea because you could always move it over if you decide to get something down the line. I've seen 120GB as cheap as $40 or $30 (can't remember which).

Just remember that in ARK, it can take up to 6+ hours to tame ONE dinosaur depending on the server and their mods. If that dinosaur gets killed by people, you have to retame a new one.

I have 225 hrs in Rust and 108 in ARK. Both are great, both are different, both are no fun alone/without friends.

the most important thing they left about ark is how poorly optimized and graphics demanding ark is, so if u got an ancient pc, u are not going to have a good time playing it.

For a gaming laptop, the Inspiron 7559 is a good deal. A quad core i5 and a 4gb GTX 960m for 800 bucks in the USA. My belief is that when it comes to laptops, you do have to spend a certain amount of money to get something that is good. A dedicated gpu makes a huge difference over the integrated trash.

Join the CAG server where the taming speed is set to 4x. You also don't have to worry about jerks stealing your stuff or killing your dinos if that's not your thing.

if all ur wife does on laptop is watch netflix, check email, browse webs, and online shooping and etc...
then just get a google chromebook , they are only sale for $100-$150 sometimes

Yea, I'll join up after I get some backlog blown through. I also just started ED last week and only put 10hrs into that so I need to pick it up again. Too many "non-ending" games I have started -.-

I saw a breakdown on the Steam forums from someone who has the game and was answering this same question..

The discount on other content is really what made me bite now. If I decide I like the thing enough, I can always jump on Horizons sooner with a discount and not "lose" any money considering the original cost $14.99. I get in the door cheaply and make my decision as I play more. Horizon's content is not even nearly all there yet. You're basically pre-ordering that content paying the price it is now. If I get hardcore enough into it too justify it, maybe by next year or even summer I'll be more interested.

Adding to this, I only really got Horizons because friends had it and for the additional missions (surface missions), since I like doing missions now and then.

Other then surface missions, I've yet to use any other Horizons features. Planetary landings, so far, are kind of cool but add little, and the new ship isn't worth it except maybe if doing trading, and that's still a big maybe.
 
Little late but another vote for ARK.  I've played both Ark and Rust and Rust ain't got nothing on it.  As mentioned, Rust is very PvP focused to the point where there is nothing at all to do except try to kill other people and kick their sand castles once you've played for about 10 hours and gotten most of the basic skills (make tools, make guns, etc) down.  Ark has a strong PvP focus but also a respectable single-player PvE style game with the dinosaurs and even "dungeons" for later on.  You could probably play Ark for a good while single player without getting bored whereas you'd be done with Rust very quickly.

As mentioned, you're welcome to join Bruticus's server where some of the CAGs hang out although if you're looking for some hard core PvP action you won't find it there.  At some point maybe we'll all decide to go to war but right now it's more PvP-neutral on a PvP server.

Its really too bad you didn't ask this a few weeks ago. There were a lot of sales going on for laptops all over the place. I snagged a low end one for about $150 from BBY for my mom. Almost got this one for my sister but wound up getting her a higher end custom one (oos ad not on sale anymore)

You didn't mention if she games or not. If she does, like HBX says getting something with a card in it may be worth looking into. THough these days the integrated stuff on the newer chips isn't bad for lower end games. I tend to be partial to ASUS laptops. YOu can usually get an ACER for cheaper but they tend to be of lower quality build. Lenovo's pretty decent too but theyre a bit overpriced in my opinion.

If your trying to stick closer to the $300 line maybe look at the I3's or something like that. Maybe even a celeron. Not really sure how powerful it needs to be. I dont see anthing too great out there right now with a quick look

That was happening to me too. What the hecks going on? I try to browse their sale items and usually after going through 2 or 3 pages i get that error message and have to reload from page one. I just gave up

 
I'm debating ARK, as I do with every sale, but I still have games from the summer sale that I haven't touched. I've been playing The Forest and The Long Dark as far survival games go, and I still have 7 Days to Die to try out and then there's Cities that I bought during summer and haven't played once.

I'm not a fan of those. Its good to have some local hard drive storage. I think he mentioned she uses it for work too so she would want to have access to some local files if the net is down or anything

 
He didn't.  He said she needs "an internet browser with a real keyboard" with the "real keyboard" part being why she doesn't just use a smart phone.

Really, she could just buy a Bluetooth keyboard for her phone instead but I'm guessing she wants a screen larger than 5.3".

I just did the Discovery Queue for the day. I got logged out 7 times while trying to complete the three queues.

I'm starting to think that a seasonal sale activity requiring people to visit multiple store pages was a bad idea.

I was down on Dying Light, but the game really does have a satisfying core gameplay loop. Apart from stupid bullshit like instakill exploding zombies, the ragdoll physics and combat impact are really well done. Plus, you get to play as Chris Redfield doing a Nathan Drake impersonation.

 
Why do 88 of you morans own Battlefield Bad Company 2 on Steam? Isn't that one of those super-cheap-ass Origin games?

 
Couple pages back but Elite Dangerous is Euro Trucker in space.  Don't expect much in the way of interesting content.  But if you enjoy the mechanics of a space sim and don't mind repeating generic cut and paste deliver/bounty/smuggling missions then I'm sure it's worth the $16.  Overall the project (with its multiple forthcoming expansions) strikes me as overly ambitious.  Braben wants to add too many features without focusing on improving/fleshing out the core content.

Its both lack of training, and lack of motivation/caring (its hard to give a shit about a low paying sales job when all the managers do is ask you to push service plans). I worked at one in the pc department during HS (so 15-17 years ago) and apparently back then I was the only one to actually finish the pc department training. Its not complicated stuff either but management doesnt give a crap about their employees actually knowing anything about what they are selling. Rather can they push extras and service plans

Talking to some fellow employees I distinctly remember that none of them could tell you what any specs on any pc component meant and why they mattered
