Frankly, I'm less upset by GameStop's open-box policy than I am by the crappy "deals" that they offer. My shopping there has decreased significantly over the past decade. It has been because their prices are terrible, not because of any open-game policy. They rarely ever have decent deals, whether on new or used titles. I generally stop by briefly on Black Friday, and that's about it. Aside from that I only stop by GameStop when I am looking for a harder-to-find title that has gone out of print. Amazon has me covered for more obscure titles that are still available for sale, and Wal-Mart/Target/Best Buy have me covered for general retail "deals."

I would be considerably more forgiving of GameStop's open-game policy if they would just offer some decent deals now and then.

"Opened" does not equate to "used" any more than "sealed" equates to new. Returning a purchased item is not the same as purchasing, because the sales transaction is the point at which "new" becomes "used" in a retail sense. Their policies on returns don't have jack to do with whether or not the item was new during the original transaction.
I think your logic on this issue just doesn’t make sense at all. Most people here agree, if a video game has the original shrink wrap removed, it simply isn't new anymore. It is used, because the original packaging was removed; and Gamestop's practice of shipping gutted (opened, thus used) games is really unethical and shouldn't be allowed or accepted.

Gamestop's definition of "New" has everything to do with being a pawn shop and retail shop all in one company.

If it came from their retail distribution channel, it's "New" regardless of the condition of the package.  Open or damaged, it doesn't matter.  As long as the game that fits into the system is functional they don't give two shits about the rest of the stuff that went along with it.  That's just packing material and not part of the product.  Companies absolutely can sell you opened merch and say it's new if they never sold it.  Show floor items don't need to be marked as such, but typically companies are smart enough to be honest about it because the return rate for those items would be huge if they didn't.

If it came from being being "pawned in" then they can't sell it as "New" or different state governments will shove a foot up their ass.  This is why they refuse to let you trade in games that are unopened, despite that being hilariously hypocritical.  If that sealed game that was traded in ended up being sold as new, and they got caught, it'd get ugly for them real quick.

At a minimum, Gamestop should at least (not legally, but from a customer service perspective) label their open new items as "Show Floor" with a discount slapped on them.  This would require a significant overhaul of their inventory management though, as it would require a whole process for displaying these items as different condition on their website and in-store computers as well as people time to look over and grade items.  Maybe this will happen now that they are getting into retro games.  Doubtful.

From a customer perspective it all sucks, but from the perspective of a bean counter it's a glorious innovation of some sort.  Gamestop gets away with it due to sheer volume they move and a large swath of their customers simply not caring.  They paid X for a game they wanted and the game works.  Many of those customers toss out the game box and manual.  Frankly, if you want it to change the only recourse is through forcing legal definitions since Gamestop won't change it themselves.  Talk to your state representative.  Good luck with that!

Long story short, don't buy anything from Gamestop unless you are 100% sure of what you are getting.  This leaves a very short list of items that aren't found cheaper elsewhere, but sometimes you can wade into the muck with them and come out with a nice gem.

I only buy opened "new" games at gamestop as a last resort, the cheapest price for a long while, or it absolutely is the only copy around

pretty much this. Gamestop doesn't do anything better than other retailers. There's nothing else to discuss.

Man, I wish it were just my logic. Unfortunately there is a retail definition of "new" that long predates GS, and shrinkwrapped has nothing to do with it.

Weirdly, I actually play the games I get from GameStop. So unless it doesn't work, it's not a huge problem for me. It does seem logical (and ethical) for a new game to be unopened, though.

Not really a deal, but more of a heads-up to all those completionists out there..

Assassin's Creed Chronicles for Vita is out tomorrow (got my shipping notice today) and Best Buy has it for $24 after GCU: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/assassins-creed-chronicles-trilogy-pack-ps-vita/4828200.p?id=bb4828200&skuId=4828200

Since Best Buy doesn't add new stock in-store for Vita games, it's probably best just to grab it with GCU through the website. No real reason to think this one will be rare or anything, but who knows how long it will be for it to go under $24.

Also, this game is screaming to be played on the Vita instead of the big-kid consoles.

Um excuse me, but I'm looking for the Vita deals thread? Has anyone seen it?
Yup, it's right next to the "& Discussions" thread ;)

From Gamestop's own website FAQ about returns:

"We do not accept returns of:

Any product(s) returned more than 30 days from the date on the packing slip.
Any product(s) that has been opened (taken out of its plastic wrap).
Any product(s) not in its original condition.
Any product(s) that is damaged, played, or is missing parts."

Apparently your "retail definition of new" doesn't work here, though I'm not sure where you found/made up such a definition to begin with.

Just picked up 2 PSTVs, can't find any recent or well written documentation on whitelisting or how to use tn-x or ark to play PS1/PSP and emulators games on it...
Can anyone share a quality tutorial? Checked hackinformer and wololo, both pretty lame.

Plan to update the other one to latest firmware so I can stream PS4 and download any PS+ games that aren't blacklisted. Would be nice to play remoteusing a DS3 or DS4, instead of my Vita... Why oh why can't Sony implement simple things like syncing a DS4 to a Vita and enabling A2DP BT profile on ps4 (which works perfectly on Vita)...

Every time I turn around, <facepalm> Sony!
You can't do mods on the vita as of a year or so ago since they did an update to remove the exploit which is a shame.

Whether or not they take it in return has nothing to do with whether or not it was new at the time of sale, though.

Also it's actually the definition of new regarding anything sold. Otherwise you'd be buying all of your clothes, cars, etc "used"

sigh.......

A new game is a sealed game.  Period.  Once the seal is broken it's no longer new.

Unplayed =/= New

I'm going to hope lionheart is just trolling and doesn't believe that nonsense.

Just noticed Trillion is $29.99 used at GS, no stock near me yet but might be interested in picking it up in the future with the surprise 20% coupon they sent out.

The Super Wal-Mart near me had a few PSTVs in stock. I got the last controller bundle they had, as well as one stand-alone package. That was $50 total for two PSTVs. (as well as the controller and memory card in the bundle) Good deal.
. And they activated the vouchers again too. Sidenote: anyone want to trade a Sly Cooper voucher for any other voucher?

If it was $29.99 like Aegis of Earth was, then I would have easily taken the bait, but $39.99 seems to be a bit more than I'd want to spend on it.

Even if it does have a low run, at $39.99, it probably will have a lower demand for it at the start, or at least that's what I'll be holding out for now.

Good to see BB actually listing it finally though. ^__^

It's been up on Amazon for awhile now, I know because I tried to go in on the glitch one more time just to see if the glitch thread really ruined double discount, and alas, it did, so canceled that pre-order in a heartbeat. :*(

Just finished Steins;Gate. Solid overall, although there were some tropes and predictable plot points I could have done without. I'm sad that we'll probably never get Steins;Gate 0. That they've had to release multiple waves and editions of the original in the West doesn't bode well for 0 getting translated and released :whistle2:(

Can Confirm, they reactivated the PSTV vouchers, was just able to redeem Lego the Movie PS VITA.

I cannot activate Sly as I apparently already have the game as a long forgotten PS+ freebie.

I have 2x Sly Cooper TiT and 1x The Lego Movie PSVITA/PSTV vouchers for trade/sale, PM with offers.

Looking for VITA or PS4 stuff primarily...

Here's a question for you guys that maybe someone can shed some light on. I had ps plus and let it lapse because, well, it was getting lame. I had Sonic Allstars Racing as a freebie, but didn't delete it because I didn't want to lose my save and knew I would snag a physical eventually. It was also the discontinued Bonus Edition. So, now here I am about to pull the trigger on purchasing it on Amazon (lost a gift card, then found it this morning). It won't be the Bonus Edition because that basically doesn't exist on cartridge anymore. The question: Do you think my old save data will unlock the content on the cartridge, even though it was through PS plus? That would be awesome if so...

It should. I can't imagine why it wouldn't? As far as I knew the bonus edition just contained some DLC to download.
