Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Was just looking and noticed some price drops on amazon.

Senran Kagura 2 Deep Crimson - $18.41(dropping)

MGSV(PS3) - $14.02

Tales of Zestiria(PS3) - $17.70(sold by woot)

Is Zestiria fine on the PS3? It's that or PC for me. But I'm not sure I could run the PC version well enough.
zesty was 12 or 14$ from gohastings the other day assuming its not out of stock. Personally I don't rec playing it. its not a very good game.

Not really much else guaranteed for this week except for Overwatch. Also looks like XSeed put a release window of Summer 2016 on Xanadu NEXT :pc:. Now all we need is localization announcements for Ao/Zero and Tokyo Xanadu. Also plan to do a once over today on the wiki to add/change games since I've mostly neglected it lately due to the aggravating slow loading/timeouts I get when editing it.

Other stuff that released without warning last week that are all PC/Steam:
- Princess Edge - Dragonstone (Beat'em Up)

- The Leisure of Grisaia (Visual Novel)

Weekly Releases (May 22nd - May 28th)

What are the chances that I will get the game case buying used off Gamestop.com?

I wanted to pick up Tales of Hearts R yesterday and the GS I went to on their online tracker said they had both new and used in stock but they had none. Debating on buying through GS.com but I want the original case if possible.

Wow, I didn't realize everyone disapproved of Zestiria so much. I'm curious as to why.

The only complaints I had are the story pacing and traveling the world map. But then again, these issues can be found in all Tales games if you think about it (at least IMO).

I agree, I don't understand the hate for this game. I actually enjoy it quite a bit. The only thing I dislike about it are the random equipment drops and skills on them, and that enemies seem to have quite a bit of health relative to how much damage you can actually inflict in a combo (this might be because i'm playing on hard though).

It's not as bad as people say. It's like saying Final Fantasy XII or XIII are absolute steaming piles of garbage because they tried some things different from previous installments and it didn't execute well (or did, depending on your view. Personally I hated XII). Plus most people like to basically rate things a 1 or 10 depending on how much things annoy/works for them, not how something actually is. I think the game is decent, but not that great of a Tales game and would probably give it a 7 with 5 being average. Maybe even go as low as a 6.5 depending.

The issues are basically as follows:

1) The maps are much larger than past games and aren't exactly sprawling with activity, so they can feel devoid of life. Technically it's not unrealistic, but you can't have most maps feel devoid of life in a game otherwise the players attention wanes.

2) The battle system has some serious issues:

- Battle maps are based off of where you encounter enemies. Started next to a wall? You lost half your battle area. A bunch of other obstacles such as rocks nearby? They're in the battle too. This then transitions into...

- The battle camera still doesn't clip objects. How god damned hard is it to have a camera clip objects so you feel your character in the same focus all the time? I don't like the camera ending up in or in front of my character and I can no longer see them.

- In the same vein, you also have the issue in free run where you can literally run outside of the camera view because it doesn't stick to your character like it should. How the fuck did that make it past testing?

- Because of battle map change, the effects/abilities are toned down compared to what you're used to. It's not as flashy, which is a little disappointing. Not a huge deal. I noticed it for sure but I've seen plenty people complain about it like it's the worst thing ever.

- I'm personally not a fan of the armatization system in the game. I feel like it screwed with a lot of things that I like about Tales battle systems from the previous games. It removed stuff like healers and while the spells still exist (for the most part), they're a shell of their former selves that I just couldn't really get into and kinda killed the flow of battle for me.

3) The story does have some pacing issues. It's not that bad (Just stupid), but eh, it's worth a mention. For the most part though, I did enjoy the cast despite that they're still overly trope filled. Rose was probably my favorite, but I've always enjoyed rogue'ish characters that are halfway decent.

4) The equipment system is balls. I can't explain it without a very nasty and long rant. You'll just have to trust me on this. It is probably my most hated thing in the game. By far.

5) There was a bunch of Japanese controversy about Alisha that you may hear about because they made it seem like she was going to play a big integral part in the story but ended up just being a side character more or less. So to help with that they made DLC around her but in my opinion blew it because the dungeon is just a bloated mess that I didn't find particularly fun. I thought she was fine the way she was in the game.

EDIT: Fixed some wording.

NO the world map complaint definitely will not be found in any other game. You have slow ass molasses walking speed in zestiria even with the increase from wind spirits skill (which is a timed gauge an only temp) and it costs money to fast travel. Of which you are constantly locked out of during the game stupidly. Not even for story reasons. They just lock stuff out forcing you to walk back and forth. Especially late in part 3 where you are forced to backtrack to collect orbs to continue the story.

Speaking of thats the part that screws the pacing to hell. Even worse if you didn't know about the orbs to begin with like some people did forcing you to backtrack to every area of the game to collect them vs having collected them as you went which was difficult since as I mentioned they locked out areas as you go. Sometimes as soon as you finished a dungeon the entire area surrounding it is locked out.

EDIT: Fixed some wording.
1/2 specifically bothered me along with the 4 mages having only 4-6 spells each. None of them are full screen spells. Most are single target. Majority aren't good spells. Vergeant fangs which was richards amazing spell in graces was nerfed. Its still good but poor in comparison to its original form. None of the great spells from older games made it into this. no tidal wave, no meteor storm, no judgement, no indignation ect. The armetized versions spells were almost equally poor and felt like they should of been on the mages outside of it. The artes were what the mages SHOULD of had as artes to make them useful as their artes are slapped on for the most part and limited to single target close range which is completely retarded for ranged mages to be using on top of being horribly slow. Lailahs unplayable as a melee due to this. Her character arena took being overleveled and using the quick step into casting trick to finish.

Besides that you also learn artes and spells at a really poor rate. 10 hours and I didn't even have 4 a artes to use!

/rant.

Equipment wise its thankfully ignorable as you can still beat the game without good equipment and skills but yeah randomized skills on top of randomize equipment was a very poor decision. Shops have randomized equipment. Just why?

To add more things you didn't cover the frame rate is unstable and is 30fps when most tales use 60. There's many times where the game lags the hell out so you hear the sound going ahead of whats happening on screen. Most notable times being in hyland the first big town in the game, and when you are fighting 6+ enemies at the same time most of which casting magic like the pixies in the museum in marland.

I wish they would actually release a real GT game already. Forza had 2 games since GT 6 and not going to spend money on Sport since it's going to be a game between 6 and 7.

yeah enemies are really bloated hp wise towards the end of the game. even on easiest difficulty. I think thats probably due to how you don't gain much stats in this though compared to the other games. Because alot of it is tied to equipment, skills and the armitization gauge so you only have 2 characters attacking for a brief period of time in comparison to 4 in all the other games.

I played on PC. There was no unstable framerate and there was a 60FPS mod/patch available if desired, but physics could be a little screwy at times if used. Everything was buttery smooth for me. The only issue I had was a minor save corruption issue in the first PC build at the second save point in the game, which I remedied quick. Pretty sure the first or second patch fixed that.

I played on pc as well but I never applied the 60fps mod. There was also loading lag at times on the field due to having to load enemies on the horizon as you ran. But that was only common for the meadow of triumph or whatever it was called thats the hub area connecting the areas between pendragon, hyland/marland, lastonbell and gododdin.

Those Sekai Project and Mangagamer announcements at the con were kind of lame imho. Mangagamer it's mainly hardcopies and some new nukige game and a prequel to that new Morgana game and Sekai has some i'm unsure of visual novel and some doujin looking action game. Least a while back Imouto Paradise 2 was announced...I need that game.

MangaGamer Announcements (NSFW)
Sekai Project Announcements

Also I would recommend if you want a Shiren the Wanderer Vita copy I'd recommend you order now. It seems sold out for pre-orders at BestBuy, Gamestop doesn't seem to have it in their system/site, so Amazon or others is your likely choice. Something tells me this will be a small physical print run, and I really like these games, so I wont take a chance.
Was there a CE release for Imouto Paradise like there is for Euphoria?

I still had zero issue graphically. Like I said, everything was buttery smooth for me.

EDIT: I was also rendering it at 4K and downscaling to 1080 using GeDoSaTo on a decently good (not top-of-the-line) computer that's around 4 to 6 years old depending on the part. It's one of the better optimized Japanese games on Steam.

I'm just glad I never ran into the falling into the ground glitch.  Though I did run into the skinless glitch once where slay lost his skin so it was just teeth and whatever.

I wish but I don't think so. I quite liked that game too. Every sister was great and the Loli ended up being my favorite...who woulda knew! But still a hard copy at least did come out.

RNG is still shit. Been playing this game ever since it came out and I only got one legitimate UR. Just going to save my Transfer Code and delete it off my phone.
I know the feel. I've only gotten two UR in the two years I've played this. Then there are others who get pulls like this...

Ln3gS7A.jpg

Makes me so salty, but then I realize that I've played SIF entirely for free at the expense of people who spend tons of $$$ on this game. I'm OK with low RNG if it means I can keep playing. Doesn't really affect gameplay too much (except during score match ROFL stomps).

Switch to Tales of Link. It's very generous to beginners with the summon stones, and has all the characters from the Tales series.

Played the Odin Sphere demo on the PS4. I remember the gameplay being pretty decent in the original but it feels really damn good now. The demo lets you choose from any of the five characters and play some battles and a boss.

Atelier Firis is also sounding good so far. Some interesting changes to the usual formula. With it being the series 20th anniversary game, hopefully it doesn't blow it.
