Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

I'm sure CSH will go up for preorder and sell within five minutes that I don't happen to be on the internet. I don't hate digital though so I'll get over it if that happens.
LRG is pretty good about trying to get their games to as many people as possible. They limit games to 1 per customer and sell half their stock at a time. I believe each half goes live at 10:00AM and 6:00PM EST.

No kidding. I gave up on trying to catch those games. It felt like I was playing EverQuest again, camping a super rare spawn, only to have an overpowered player run in and kill it before I could stand up.

Not sure that's what they're implying though
Couldn't say, but their kickstarter description page did not mention physical copies at all. So I have a hard time believing they'll be doing physical. Japan got a physical edition for Pirates Curse on the 3DS though.

If Shantae is actually getting a physical version for Wii U, Vita, AND PS4 for $30 each (-GCU) it's going to be really hard to resist triple-dipping. Not sure that's what they're implying though
I don't see anything that states otherwise.

"Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is getting both a “Risky Beats” retail ($29.99) version (which includes a music CD containing over 20 songs from the game’s soundtrack), as well as a digital release, across PlayStation 4, PS Vita, and Wii U sometime this fall."

That's pretty definitive, right?

I'm more confused about Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity and Exiles End. In the first paragraph it they made it seem like all three games would be getting retail and digital releases. But then for each game description, they say Touhou and Exiles are only coming out digitally.

well shantae will get physical, the other two games seem to be digital only since they are less known/popular but at least they are publishing those since they wouldnt be getting here probably

Yep, it's definitely physical on all three. Goodbye money!

Except in this case of Cosmic Star Heroine you will know the exact time that the rare monster will pop and you are just a slow n00b if you miss out on the kill. :D/

I must be a slow noob then, lol. Of course, the other few times I was just slow on the draw. I just thought of it as life's way of telling me I have enough damn games anyways.

Best gaming memories of my life, and likely always will be.

Good ol' Stormfeather.

I played Everquest when I was 16 back in 1998 and never got past level 32 cleric because I sucked and I decided driving and meeting girls was more fun than this impossibly grindy MMO.  I was all about the 1hd club damage so people in my parties would die and then yell at me.   Oh yeah baby, that HP w/ a Pentium III processor played Mechwarrior 3 and Baldur's Gate like nobody's business.

I played on Sullon Zek, one of the three PVP servers, which had a ruleset that made you fair game to anyone not on your team once you hit level 6. Three teams, Good Neutral and Evil dependent upon what race/class/deity combo you chose. Exp loss and possibly delvling on every PVE death and any PVP death to someone within 5 levels of you.

The epic multi zone guild wars were great. Raiding was split into two main groups, those going after the weekly spawns and those staying back to hold off enemy guilds.

Weird.

Their Support seems to be going downhill lately as well. The rep I got barely seemed to understand english, tried to send me a code for "Kung Fu Panda", and insisted if I returned the item they would replace it for me.

If we get shafted on DLC I might just return the whole damn thing and wait for a price drop on the standard
I got a 'Golden Luffy' DLC code. I don't remember what I did for it though (sign up for something I think). Still no response from BN about the pre-order DLC.

Grand Kingdom LiteDEMO launches next week in the west

The LiteDEMO version of the game will include access to the first two chapters of the main story, allow participation in one war per day, allow use of the Fighter, Hunter, Witch, and Medic classes, and rollover save data to the retail version.
Nice, missed the beta while I was away and really want to try this before buying it.

Yeah I got my Golden Luffy's.

Apparently Amazon is starting to send them out, but I still havent received anything yet

I camped him about 8 expansions after it was the norm for both my monk, and my warrior. I have to say my most memorable gaming experience from EQ was when I turned in my monk epic quest items and got the Celestial Wraps.

I first played EQ on a Pentium I processor with 128MB of RAM and a Voodoo 3-3000 graphics card. I was so proud of that thing, lol. I started playing because my best friend was wheelchair bound after a car wreck, so this way we could game out together. OF course, any time I would date anyone, my playtime dropped significantly.

I was too cowardly to play any of the PVP servers, though I did have a few friends who played them. I used to follow the exploits of the guild "Flowers of Happiness" with the world famous "Fansy the Famous Bard."

Genius idea gamefreak make the Sun Pokemon weak to fire.
yeah that's easily one of the dumbest things they have come up with typing wise. Especially since the one move looked fire.

I would of went dark fairy dark psychic or something over psychic ghost on lunala.

The preorder themes for Project Diva: Future Tone have been revealed. Apparently the other themes we saw before could be just for the limited edition Miku PS4.

And with that I suddenly want it. Thanks as I would of never given it a glance if not for that.
lol..you're welcome? I suspect I'll still get it because of the setting, but I'm really not a fan of the combat style, partially because I'm bad at it and because I prefer the WOTS style

I wasn't a fan of the other games combat beat em up style so I wrote it off. I really like tales of combat so this peaks my interest. If its really like tales of/star ocean then cool so long as its not watered down like radiata.

Free JPN Idolmaster Theme with Custom Sound and Tiles. I still like the Tokyo Xanadu Sakura Theme that was free a while back.

I am very disappointed Akiba's Beat is some turn based RPG thing or something....kind of wanted another beat em up. I will still play it esp if it's localized.

Amazon taking PreOrders for PS4 Hatsune Miku "Fightstick" (if you can call it that) Project DIVA X themed for about $135 shipped.

Goodsmileshop taking PreOrders for Super Sonico Racing Version (Cosplay of Miku's 2013 outfit) for $135 or so.

I officially throw my white flag in for anime figures....way too expensive now...and I already have enough debt coming from other places.

I'm with you on that one. I'd like to get the main Hyperdimension Neptunia figurines in their Goddess mode, but that'll involve more budgeting than the usual game. I've even passed on a lot of LE/CEs as of late since they really didn't tempt me like they used to. Before, I'd see LE or CE and it was bought. Now, they have to have something unique or worth the extra money. Booklets, cards, and calendars just don't cut it anymore. I need something shiny or a free season pass or something.

Agreed the last limited edition i got was Monster Hunter 4 one since it was just a bit more expensive than the normal game. Usually full soundtrack/artbooks can get me to get a limited edition, but it hasn't happened in a while. The thing I hate about figures now is the normal prices now for figures is pretty close to what limited edition figures used to cost. It's just ballooned up too much and I wont support it, though I still do by Ranma 1/2 and Sailor Moon figuarts since I want to support the licenses.

I agree with you guys regarding the figures, however my actions would say otherwise...

"I'm done buying figures, I don't need anymore", "Oh wait, that one is on sale with free shipping". -Habit continues-

I really intend to lay off the figures, but every time I see any new Fate ones I can't resist.

I suppose it's just like my gaming situation. Huge backlog with space running out to put them, but still buy them anyways.

It is really disturbing that there is still no news on the physical release front for I am Setsuna.  Many people will want to support this game, but being that it emulates games from the 90s don't they know that people want a physical game?

They are pushing it real hard, but the game could flop digitally. Which would be a disaster for both the studio and fans, not releasing any new titles in the future.  I mean who goes around buying digital games at full price these days?  Not many people.  Also this situation reeks of an instance where if you buy it digitally at first, there's only going to be a physical version sometime down the line.

I'd honestly bite if it were released for $20. I used a gift card to purchase Ray Gigant when it came out and enjoyed the game. Something tell me I'll enjoy I am Setsuna more than RG. Of course, I would happily pay more for a physical release any day.

The early impressions coming out for the Odin Sphere port are exactly what I was hoping to hear. The original game is largely unaltered, but now runs at gorgeous 1080p with a silky-smooth 60fps with no slowdown. All the great art at high resolution, none of the technical hiccups.

While it would have been nice to have had a little more bonus content added, I usually give Vanillaware a free-pass because of their art. And having a version of Odin Sphere that showcases that art at proper HD, and eliminates any and all of the performance issues of the original game...that's pretty much the optimal outcome for me.

I pre-ordered this game as soon as it was made available on-line. More than half a year ago. Looking forward to Tuesday.

It looks more like a Tales of or SO game to me.
yeah thats what i took when they said something about using different powered headphones, i just hope that its a bigger world with more access to akiba and maybe some mini arcade games in an arcade or something, besides since its still in development and also targeting westerns they wouldnt spend the extra money for a ton of text and a strategy engine

I am Setsuna was announced from the beginning to be digital....I do want physical but it wont happen.
well they may change and partner up with limited run or something, if it stays digital only will just wait for a good sale

Freakin' finally....Valkyria Chronicles 2 PSN can now be directly download to the PS Vita.

Link

So if you bought it recently....yay for you!
