Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

There are still a surprising number of players in the field and given that services like iTunes, Vudu, etc. are so huge, my only conclusion is that there must be a large profit margin (and/or easy money) in it so it's worth even a relatively small customer base. Otherwise, it seems like Microsoft should know they have little hope of winning the war (unless they do something drastic).
This is probably more Microsoft hoping beyond hope they can compete against Vudu(Walmart) and MoviesAnywhere(Disney) except that you can link those libraries and get Amazon and itunes tossed in as well. Microsoft is on an island with their stuff in a way that benefits no one, this reeks of windows phones.

I don't necessarily think that they are trying to compete with MA, as they were once a DMA partner. More than anything, I think they are in negotiations to get back on the bandwagon.

I still think they may abandon it like they did with Groove and fold it into Groove or something else. I mean not many people other than Xbox owners probably use it. How many people watch movies on their PCs?

Having a streaming service that is not available on TVs or phones (save the very few that still have Windows phones) is doomed in 2018. Back when the 360 was king it may have made more sense because there weren’t many Smart TVs, etc. Now, not so much.

Either they get with MA or fold their cards.

True. Plus, they already have the licensing infrastructure for digital content, and movie studios only stand to make money by letting storefronts sell their content. It's probably a pretty low cost of operation given the network and digital distribution model they already have.

being that kingdoms of amalur hasn't been delisted I think people are wrong in assuming it could never go BC
I agree. While the development studio may have died, EA as a publisher doesn't seem to be in any hurry to stop the trickle of sales it probably still gets.

With the $25 movie thing, I’ve read some rumors that Microsoft’s Movies and TV section may go under just like Groove. But that could be a very good thing. They would most likely fold into another streaming service like Vudu or FandangoNow.

That, in turn, would finally make MS movies in the Movies Anywhere program. I wonder if that’s why they have not made any moves to get in MA, thinking they may not be around much longer to bother with it.
I guess my question is why not buy movies on Vudu that is actually cross-platform?

I read up on the case, apparently the studio still owed EA $30 million on top of the $75 million it owed Rhode Island for the business loan to move their studio. So EA will probably keep selling it for awhile. At the $5 sale price, they only need to sell 6 million copies to make their money back!

Come to think of it, RI may own the IP, but EA still has distribution rights to the game, so that may allow it to eventually go BC.

Exactly my point. It’s just a shame in both the case of MS and PSN that they aren’t integrated because they occasionally have some good deals. I went for this $25 back deal just with the hope that either MS joins MA or they close shop and fold into Vudu or something.

Otherwise I will buy from Vudu, iTunes, Google Play and now FandangoNow since they are joining MA. Whoever is cheapest. Won’t consider Xbox or PSN unless it’s just an amazing deal (like essentially paying nothing with this offer).

Like I said I think we just need to take up arms against Rhode Island and just get this done. ;)

Was heading here to post as well, won 2 4 25$ codes. Thanks Fallout shelter and Clicker Heroes.

Subject line of email "Congrats! You’re a WINNER in the FREEdom Play-A-Thon!"
So a few more emails are going out now it seems. Just got a $5 code.

I thought it was weird that everyone here who won had only won $25 dollar codes. They had $15 or $10 and $5 ones in the prize list as well so there may be a few more emails coming for those that had entries.

Badabing! 5x$5 and 6x$10. That brings my total to $160!

Come on baby, daddy needs a new gold plated xbox one x (or was that the Feb gold quest?)!

There's supposedly a bug right now that displays your real name under your gametag even if you had it disabled previously. To check if it's off, on Xbox.com, click on your profile icon in the top right corner > Xbox Settings > Privacy and Online safety. The URL is https://account.xbox.com/settings
Xbox is borked, I'm not even able to access this page at the moment as it errors out. Hopefully they are aware of the glitch and working to fix it... hopefully...

Ok, this is the first time this has happened to me and this is a stupid and obvious question but are we not allowed to play games on our X1 when we can't sign in? Is there a work around? I don't think I've encountered this issue on the 360.

Your xbox would need to be set as a home console according to this xbox support page . Says disc games should work. Not sure if you can do anything if things are still down.

I can do better than this. I purchased mine last year when they had a similar deal of $5 and get $5 back. I bought about 8 last year and got about $40 back. I noticed many of the same movies were available this year in this similar deal so I ignored it. I just got an email code from Microsoft for $25 and was able to redeem it. I assume this is some huge oversight glitch in their process. I'm tempted to buy a couple more movies to see if I can get another $25.
So it wasn't just me, I got that email today as well, but haven't bought any movies since that promo. I had to fight for my credit last year, as I waited until the last night to finalize my purchases, and they timestamped them in GMT, making it appear that they were bought the following morning (luckily I had screenshots of the promo, but it still took numerous calls, chats, and emails). I was going to do the 5 for 25 this year too, but with the promo specifying once per person, I probably shouldn't push my luck.

Played some Paladins last month and ended up winning x2 $25, x1 $10, and x1 $5 for $65 total

Not complaining :)

On a side note... I noticed I haven't been receiving the bonus point e-mails for bing for quite awhile now, but logged into my wife's e-mail and she is still receiving them? What gives???

I had thousands of entries (from legit playing) and I've got bupkus. Would post my usual "i got a rock," but someone already used it today so I don't even have that anymore. I'm just gonna Eeyore over in that field over there.....

Assuming that's payable by you and not some complication, that's great for you since you make so much that that is your percentage owed for tax. Why bother getting deals on CAG when your time is clearly much more valuable, lol. Good for you, but if you added how much tax liability I've had in over twenty years of work, it wouldn't add up to that. Thanks a lot college degree and working in my field of television!

It's usually $16-19

EDIT: just got a 3rd $10 card
My electric bill was $230 last month and I live in a 2 bedroom apartment.
$550. Old 4800 square feet finished house.

Highest ever. Had a couple weeks where the high never got over 32. Had a house in ATL where all the heat rose to unused space in a foyer and drove up my bill. Bought a foreclosure here and I'm still fixing lots of things and haven't gotten to seal it up like it needs to be so it isn't optimally efficient. Two years ago we had a high of 7 for two days and a cold month and the bill was $460. Never thought I'd get a higher one. I still owned the ATL house and it was $300 that month.

I understand and good for you man, that's awesome! Honestly, the best way to have more money is to be frugal even if you have money. Nothing wrong with that.

Thankfully my heat is through radiators in the building, so nothing I have to pay for.
My first apartment had baseboard hot water heat. It was pretty sweet not having to pay for heat. It had a really old in wall AC though. It was horribly inefficient. Got slammed in the summer on electric.

I just keep things closed up in the summer and it stays a nice temperature.

No AC needed.

Yay, comparing heating cost. Old house I just moved out of was 2 story badly made house. Our electric bill ran $600-$700 a month. The house we’re in now is all single floor with a wood stove. Electric bill is just $80 a month.

Just catching up on posts, but I agree with Gamegirlpocket that the overhead for offering Movies via Xbox is probably quite low.  And thinking about Groove, the movie industry is worth about double that of music, and I'm guessing movie consumption follows Microsoft's living room/xbox market a lot more closely than streaming music does.   I wasn't too shocked that Groove folded, but would be surprised if Microsoft threw in the towel on movies in the near future.  But what do I know, I still don't subscribe to Netflix!

Well, if Movies Anywhere continues to grow and MS wants to stay in the movie business, they will need to join it or their sales will probably plummet from however low they have to be already. Not sure how sustainable that would be. Just my two cents.
