Anime & Manga Thread Vol. 2: Za Warudo!!!

I'm still working through some anime for a 2nd round and deciding what to keep and drop. This is mainly to do with time, and interest of course.

Comic Girls and Tada Never Falls in Love are my watch at work on my phone after eating lunch anime. Safe, boring somewhat, silly, sometimes cute, but just there to keep me entertained weekly. 6/10 and keeping watching for rest of season.

Tiramisu is so ridiculous, but it makes me laugh a bit and I am getting my 6 minutes or whatever entertainment out of it weekly. 6.5/10 and watching rest of season.

High School DxD is kind of a mess and more of a guilty pleasure over anything. The story is pretty weak, the animation is not too good, and it makes me cringe more often than not. Still will watch, but this is easily droppable. 6/10

LOGH anime is honestly kind of gone down a bit. It's super slow, slightly boring, but good enough for what it is. I'm sticking with it through the long haul, but it's a bit drudging to get through. 6.5/10 and watching till it's done.

Watakoi is pretty entertaining, though a bit light on content. It does have romance and such, but it's more slice of life than anything. I hope all the characters keep evolving their relationships with each other and it keeps being entertaining. 7.5/10 and watching rest of season.

Hinamatsuri is just great. It's funny, cute, heart warming, and makes you care about the characters and laugh with them and at them sometimes. Easily anime of the season. 9/10 and watching rest of season.

Golden Kamuy is turning out to be pretty cool too. I'm liking the animation the more I see of it, and the art style is alright. The story seems pretty interesting and I'm liking the 2 main characters and hope there is a lot more adventuring and such in this. Raising this one to 8/10 and watching rest of season.

Tachibanakan Triangle is so dumb and silly. It's just harem tropes one after another. I would drop it likely, but it's short, and the girls are cute. 5/10 and watching because it's super short.

Gurazeni had a somewhat boring third episode, but it explained a bit about the baseball logic, and how players are rated for those who don't know that. I still like it, and it feels relaxing in a way watching it. The characters all seem pretty nice overall, and I can't wait to meet more of them including whoever the girl is in the ending sequence. Something tells me she works at a restaurant the guys attend and becomes a fan of theirs. Not sure though of course. My sleeper of the season, and I feel it's being overlooked by most viewers. 8/10 and watching rest of season.

I pretty much just need to watch Megalobox, Magical Girl Site, Mahou Shoujo Ore (likely to drop but will give it to episode 2), Real Girl episode 3, and maybe Lupin (liked him in the past) to decide my watch list. I'm sure Real Girl and likely Magical Girl Site will make it to my watching all season list, but the others are in the air.

Okay I was being a bit harsh on Tada-kun Doesn't Fall in Love. It's just cute, and a really nice series. The 3rd episode was pure entertainment. Just makes you feel good. It's still going to be one of my lunch time anime, but it's more of a 7.5/10 now.

Probably it LOTGH, Comic Girls and Gurazeni will fit their nicely for M-Th. I eat at work all the time, so it's nice to have the anime apps to watch a bit more anime, since I don't have a lot of time in the evening.

Thanks for the write up. I haven't gotten to Golden Kamuy & Hinamatsuri yet. After I finish Citrus and catch up with Black Clover those are my next must watch shows.

Speaking of Black Clover anyone else think the animation is pretty darn terrible? I mean it's gotta be some of the worst in recent memory.

I don't notice bad animation unless we're talking about Naruto Shippudden levels of bad. So I guess I haven't noticed it. The last 2 episodes of Black Clover have been filler and re-cap, so your catch up may be quicker than you think.

I just finished the part were they're defending the city against zombies and the crazy guy. That whole fight was pretty low quality. I mean, it's not going to stop me from watching, but going from MHA to this it's like night and day in quality.

Some anime I finished recently:

Grimoire of Zero: It was ok. I liked the witch and mercenary interactions, and the premise was good, but didn't find the villain interesting.

Overlord S2: Awesome! S3 is already confirmed. Can't wait ^^

Yuru Camp: Very enjoyable sol series. I am a big fan of sol and can see myself rewatching this one every so often.

Death March: Fun series. Similar to the cellphone one where the main character is op and no real problems to deal with.

Ryuuou no Oshigoto: Enjoyable. I liked how you didn't have to know shogi to watch it.

Kakegurui: Not terrible, but nothing special. Art was good. Watch if you're bored.

Violet Evergarden: Dem feels! Good to know my tear ducts still work. Excellent series. Btw, did anyone else think Violet's physical design was like a cross between Saber and Edward Elric?

Haiyore Nyaruko-san: Older parody ecchi comedy. Had a few funny moments, but mostly forgettable.

Ancient Magus' Bride: Interesting all the way through. Good character interaction. Worth a watch.

Devilman Crybaby: Wtf did I just watch? Art and sound were great, but the story seemed more focused on gore porn than any meaningful message. I was left with an empty feeling at the end. Don't recommend.

Hinamatsuri is a lot of fun. Only 2 episodes in but I can tell I'm going to enjoy this for the rest of the season. The first episode felt a little rushed but I like that they took no time getting into the story. Strong start and I totally recommend.

I dropped Devilman Crybaby. I got about 5 or 6 episodes in. It has an intresting animation style which I liked but it had little to no story. I also felt confused  most of the time like I was missing something in the story. But I don't think I was missing anything, It's just poorly written. I also wouldn't recommend unless you want to watch stylishly animated murder porn.

Lupin III continues to be a joy to watch. But Amy's back story was pretty dark and depressing. I'm used to watching Lupin Part 2 which is pretty light and goofy so I was a little shocked. But then again A Woman Named Fujiko was quite racey and adult themed as well.

Stein's Gate Zero is so good....I'm re-watching the original to remind myself of what happened (not that I forgot, but to ingrain it in my head). This season is going to be fascinating. I wonder if this will solve the part of the original where Mayuri says she went looking for him all over? Too soon to say, but I do wonder if she'll end up being the MC this time...

Need to watch Steins;Gate original before watching that. Comic Girls is officially dropped by me. I dislike the main character a lot, and the rest of the girls are pretty much walking cliches. Just annoying and I really can't stand the main girl failing anymore on her manga. She failed me, and I really don't like self deprecating humor in my anime. 5.5/10 and dropped.

I really should watch the original series again. I loved it but forgot so much since I binged the entire thing in a couple days. That's a big problem of mine when I binge watch.

Plus I have God of War to play too. Damn.....

I'm only 1 episode into Comic Girls. It was okay for chill sol. I have so much on my plate to watch so I'm looking to possible cut a show or two. For someone that enjoyed Sakura Quest, New Game, Laid-Back Camp, Shirobako, Non Non Biyori should I at least give it a another episode or 2? And I agree the MC was pretty annoying.

Honestly I felt at least Sakura Quest and New Game put Comic Girls to shame. Some people must have there CGDCT anime every season, but this one feels poorly done. It was also slightly ecchi in episode 3. I guess my hate for the MC and shallowness of the other characters really just pushed it into my I'm wasting my life watching this one. I generally am middling on the CGDCT anime, so I'm probably a bit biased. The self deprecation was kind of depressing to watch though, and she just doesn't seem to be getting that much better in her craft. That's the joke I'm guessing....but yeah not for me.

I'll likely, depending on time, give it maybe an episode or two more, but I may just put an older anime I missed in its slot. I wish I had more time for anime, but such it is I have to be choosy.

I'll probably mildly enjoy Comic Girls then. Like you I'll keep it on the back burner when I have nothing else to watch. I'm not hard pressed to watch it at the moment. And I had no idea what CGDCT meant. I had to look it up. Now I know the term to categorize these shows. I learned something today.

And I watched Patema Inverted last night. That was a nice little orginal movie. Totally recommend if you haven't seen it yet.

On average, the author releases two volumes a year with maybe a random hiatus.

Season 2 only animated Volumes 4-6 and youre worried about enough material?

Season 3 will likely animate Volumes 7 and 9. Maybe 8 but that is a filler volume.

And no, we re not waiting long. S3 is for July

Oh I know about S3, I'm thinking beyond that :)

Realistically, Overlord has enough material for 2 more seasons after Season 3 at the current pace. But I'm under the impression that after Season 3, the Overlord anime is going to stop.

If they wanted to, they can spend an entire season on 1 Volume. Or make an entire filler season.

Hopefully not. That would be disappointing, though it is rare for an anime to follow a manga/LN to conclusion.

Okay finally think I have the anime I'm watching this season with dropping Magical Girl Ore (lack of time to watch), likely Cutey Honey Universe (wasn't crazy about what I saw), and possibly High School DxD new season (just feels lacking, though I may like it). Hopefully everything else I keep with turns out alright at least.

This season has some best OPs in a long time. MHA, Golden Kamuy & P5 are all super catchy. The mix of those 3 have been stuck in my head all weekend. Plus I always sit through the One Piece OP.

@starkillr You inspired me to start re-watching Stiens;Gate. I forgot so much but I remember it was kind of a slow start and doesn't really pick up till episode 8 or so. I just want to re-familiarize myself with characters again before I go into the new show. I usually don't watch an anime for a second time but this one seems to be worth it. Plus I always liked the OP.

Nice! I finished re-watching it this weekend and yes the OP is fun. It really is a great show. It's not that it's slow per se, you just don't understand the repercussions of their actions until later. Then you're like OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHH SHIT! I need to find the movie again and re-watch that too actually. There are SO many hints in the show that you only pick up when you watch it again....it's kind of crazy. Anyway, I'm now fully on-board and my brain understands what's happening in this new "season". Eager to see what this "branch" of the storyline sets us up for. Since Fate/Stay Night is the only other anime where I've experienced this kind of split in scenarios, I'm not particularly hopeful that it'll have a positive impact, but so far so good.

Edit: Oh and I've finally re-watched Blast of Tempest using my lovely, cheap Australia-sourced DVDs. Enjoy that show.

I can't wait till I get to the point in Stiens;Gate were every episode is a mind fuck.

I haven't had a chance with Comic Girls or Amachu yet. There's been a lot of really good shows this season. Are you watching Amachu starkillr? I think I remember you enjoying the first season, I could be wrong.

Yeah I forgot to post about Amanchu S2 since I was busy w/ work, but the last episode was like an episode of Flying Witch. Was kind of funny. I find it to be relaxing, SoL show as usual. If you were irritated by Pikari's a-pyon! then no salvation for S2. Also the cats look like a car tire ran over their faces repeatedly.

MHA is worth the hype so much more than Black Clover and Asta's annoying yelling voice
Hmmm...........I guess so given Asta's voice that's true. BC is very traditional. MHA is also fairly traditional, but so far it's been flashier. Honestly neither is that great IMO. I prefer Fairy Tail over both.

Dropping Black Clover in place of My Hero Academia which debuts on Toonami in a few days.

Hope it's worth the hype.

I don't hate Black Clover. I keep it around for when there's nothing else. But MHA I look forward to every week.

That OP just gives you Nia vibes.
I had to look up that reference because it's been so long since I've seen GL. I really do think it's more similar to the humanity split in Gargantia, but that's why it's going to be interesting to find out!

Saw Episode 1 of My Hero Academia. Enjoyed it from beginning to end. Glad they went the X-Men route of being born with "quirks".

I'm a little worried since I saw some comments said it starts slow and gets good. I liked it right away and the "it gets good" comments have backfired on me before (i.e. Bleach) so I hope MHA keeps me interested.

I enjoyed it from the start too. I don't think it starts slow. These kind of shows typically focuses more on character growth at the beginning and big action later. Glad you're enjoying it. One of my current favorites and I'm all caught up with the English sub. So far so good. Doesn't skip a beat.

the it starts slow mostly comes from manga readers as the anime's pacing is slow compared to the manga in the first season.

overall it's a great adaption though.

Looks like my theory was right about Darling in the Franxx...let's see where this goes! Hopefully the guesses in my head all turn out wrong and I get surprised with something interesting.

Should I be watching Darling in the Franxx? I watched the first 2 episodes and it was okay but I got caught up watching other things.

Cool. I'll hold off for now. I have a ton of shows I'm watching anyway.

Caught up with Megalo Box and Hinamatsuri. They're both good shows. Megalo has some nice action and Hina continues to be charming. They're nothing great but I think they're worth a watch.

Yup, both are quite fun. There's a decent stable of fun anime to watch this season. I've been a little irritated w/ the # of "recap" episodes flying around. Beatless has 2 or 3 already! It's dumb. FMP had 1 this week and so did SAO Alternative. I'd much rather they just say they are taking a break. Such an immense waste of resources.

Finally got a chance to catch up to episode 16 of Franxx.

After watching new opening: "New opening, No. What are you doing?"
...
After Hiro says they'll always be together: "Hiro, No. What are you doing?"

Just heard that Funimation's license with Case Closed expired.

Hopefully another company like Discotek can continue from where they left off.

Recently finished anime (mostly stuff from last season I was waiting to finish airing before binge watching):

Aggretsuko: Better than I expected. Funny and relatable. If you have Netflix, give this a shot.

A Place Further Than The Universe: Amazing! Great story, cast, and execution. Highly recommended.

Batman Ninja: As dumb as the title suggests. Well animated, but story is ridiculous and not in a funny kind of way.
Citrus: Never watched an anime of this genre before. Felt like a VN with lots of drama and choices. I enjoyed it but probably wouldn't rewatch. Btw, did anyone else notice how similar the main characters are to those of SNAFU, both in physical design and personalities?
Imouto Sae Irebi Ii: Really funny. From the creator of Haganai. Pervy humor done well. I hope we get another season.
Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san: Awesome school romantic comedy! Loved the characters. Takagi's teasing was hilarious, as were Nishikata's reactions. My favorite scene was
the critical hit. Funny, touching, and set up well.
Highly recommended for fans of the genre.
Mitsuboshi Colors: Started off rough, but got better over time. Some compare it to Ichigo Mashimaro, but IM is far better. I felt too often like these kids need better parenting. Some funny moments but not a sol series I see myself revisiting.
Slow Start: As a fan of high school sol, I very much enjoyed this series. My favorite scenes were
between Eiko and her teacher, especially when the teacher got drunk, lol
I don't understand why the main character is so embarrassed about having a gap year... maybe it's a cultural thing?
Yuushibu: Older than the rest of these, this is like a fanservicey The Devil is a Part-Timer. Pretty funny and worth a watch if you liked Part-Timer.

The "Steals and Deals" thread mentioned a Kickstarter for "Bean Bandit" and it reminded me I have "Riding Bean" in my anime backlog.

So I decided to watch it.

Nice animation, but a lame story. It felt like I was watching an episode from an ongoing series so I felt no connection to any of the characters. I didn't feel like seeing more from them - unlike Gunsmith Cats which was from the same people.

The dub was corny. So since it was only 45 minutes I decided to watch it again in Japanese to see if it was any better. It was. (This was the first time I've ever watched an anime in two languages).

The music was good though:

FINALLY finished G Gundam. This has been on my list for a while. Back when it aired on Toonami I caught bits and pieces and always wanted to watch this strait through. It feels good that I finally did it. What a fun show. Just unapologetic robot fighting. Best Gundam show.

And I finished my re-watch of Stien;Gate. I am so glad I did this before going into Zero. I would've been lost if I didn't. Speaking of Zero I'm 3 episodes in. I like where this is going. I'm expecting mind fucks down the line. But I have a question. Suzuha's mom looks different and has a different personality from the final episode of the first series. Did I miss something or maybe this might be explained later?
