Anime & Manga Thread Vol. 2: Za Warudo!!!

I finished Overlord and Death March today. Overlord 2 was one of those in-betweener seasons where things were always either shorter than I wanted or longer than I wanted. I enjoyed the season as a whole though, because I like character building/driven episodes. I'm glad that season 3 is only a couple months away.

Also, Evileye is great (Don't hate me, Entoma fans)
All of her bits in the last couple episodes were great, but I love the end when she realizes that she could have followed Momon by teleporting to where he was going

I liked Death March, but it felt like I was watching Road to Elftown. It never really seemed like there was much threat of a major plot breaking out, just this week's obstacle. The last episode didn't really feel any different than any of the other ones.

This going by the anime only but Ace of Diamond was good. It focuses on baseball and the spirit of the game more than anything. There's no romance or high school drama, just baseball. It's got a bunch of characters and talks a lot about different techniques especially when it comes to pitching. The main character is probably my least favorite part of AoD. He's your typical loud mouth, brass, ignorant, but heart of gold MC.

You guys are gonna kill me but I only got halfway through Cross Game because I found it boring and not much about baseball. I really should try to finish it since it is loved so much.
I mean it's fine, it's not for everyone.

as I said neither Cross game or One outs are really baseball series lol They are about other things and use baseball to help frame the story.

Yall should be excited for the Tomb Exploration Arc and the War Arc.
That in reference to Overlord? I'm already excited for the continuation. Just wish it was already here haha. I'll let this interesting SAO spin off entertain me in the mean time.

Woohoo! Final Fairy Tail series this fall! I'm guessing since shonen isn't the hotness these days that folks aren't excited about this, but I am :D One of the few shows where I kept following it via the manga until it ended. I hope at some point in the future Bleach gets similar treatment as the final arc was awesome.

I much prefer the approach Fairy Tail took towards the end of just taking long breaks between seasons vs feeding us shitty filler episodes. Filler just sours the audience as it's generally inferior to the main story that got folks interested to begin with. I remember how much garbage they fed us with Naruto and how much it soured me on that show back in the day. Had a strong set of seasons and then just fell off a cliff.

I enjoyed Gundam Build Divers but it's a little disappointing. Probably the weakest set of main characters for this series. They're just so.... dull. But I'm in for the Gudam battles and that's what I'll stay for.

Oh that reminds me, Rightstuf is finally getting to releasing Gundam 00 after acquiring it from Bandai. I'll probably wait for a sale as the movie seems overpriced to me, though the series seem reasonable. The collector edition feels overpriced. The OVA are just a condensed re-telling of the series (aka worthless). This is probably one of the few series where the follow-on movie was really solid.

I like the characters a lot more than Sekai and lame Yuuma.

I like the characters a lot more than Sekai and lame Yuuma.
Seikai mirroring Domon and having him (or a look a like) be his master makes him cool in my book. Plus he pilots my favorite Gundam. I agree Yuuma was kinda lame, but Fumina is part of the crew and I liked her. Who knows, maybe these new kids will grow on me.

Ok, Tokyo Ghoul makes a little more sense after that second episode. I'm a bit more on board, though I still dislike this style of story telling. Also, wtf is going on with Steins;Gate 0? Is this like Fate Stay/Night where I'm going to be getting multiple series based on different endings of the game? I dislike this loser Okabe -_- Original show ftw! Of course I'm probably one of the few people who also think the original F S/N is the best (so far, that 3rd one is still slowly coming along).

I didn't list Fumina because Fumina was already cool and was at least creative with her Gunpla unlike Yuuma. All Yuuma did was slightly modify the Zeta by either adding a backpack or slightly making it faster.

On the other hand, Fumina had a neat GM Cardigan and  a SD Gundam transform into a full Gundam

I'm hoping to polish off a decent amount of episodes 1s this weekend. So far my only official drop is Magical Girl Site. I'll give impressions on everything likely on Sunday.

Just watched the long awaited continuation of Full Metal Panic! Pretty excited and it lived up to my expectations. It's the origin I feel of a lot of thematic ideas that you see in today's anime. Absolutely can't wait for more of this series....this is one of my 9/10 anime that I hope keeps giving me more of that 9/10 goodness. The source material has been done for a while for this right? Hopefully we'll get the anime to continue to the end.

the current series will go through the next 2-3 books.

rumor is it is a split cour and the second cour will finish the original material.

granted there are a lot of other books as well including more of what they made fumoffu out of.

So, does Episode 13 of Darling in the Franxx fall under Spring or Winter? If it's Winter, it just knocked Grancrest down to number 2. Otherwise, it's jumped out to a large early lead in Spring. :D

If only today's episode wasn't garbage :( I hate manufactured drama and staid tropes. Just like the latest Lost in Space on Netflix. So many boring, tired concepts being played out because they couldn't figure out how to write a good story without it.

I'll give some impressions tonight. Honestly I'm going to be harsh, and I see it as an extremely weak season. Not to say I disliked everything, but this season I'll be playing catch up with good series I missed before.

10 minutes and 40 seconds.

That's how long I was able to stomach Magical Girl Site.
That and Doreiku are likely the "edgy" anime of the season. I'm not even bothering to watch Doreiku...sounds pretty poop. I've read what's scanlated of Magical Girl Site....it's OK...nothing too amazing and really over the top.

I don't know why it took me the third episode to realize how incredibly bad this Fist of the North Star anime is. The CG isn't really the worst part, though it's bad. It's the plot, script, fighting, everything. It's terribad. I have nothing to watch on Mondays...

Okay my big impressions list in alphabetical order:

Alice or Alice - Weird fan service short anime about 2 sisters and a brother and just was really boring and nothing much happened. 5/10 and dropped

Caligula - A kind of boring likely too much into pyschology for me anime. The beginning of the anime differed from the game, and I'm not sure I liked that. Pretty good animation. Honestly I'll watch it for now, but I expect very little. It feels like it's trying too hard. 6.5/10 and watching for now.

Comic Girls - A kind of boring anime about manga girls and how some girl is super self deprecating and goes to live with some other manga writing girls. It has pretty excellent animation, but the main MC annoys me. It's very light, and sometimes cute, but it's mainly just kind of there. 6/10 and watching for now.

Crossing Time - This was a short anime cliche riddled 1st episode with maybe too much going on. It was just kind of blah and generic. 5/10 and dropped.

Cutie Honey Universe - Weird fan service Go Nagai action show thing. I've only seen a little Devil Man back in the day, but it was OK at best. Really weird overall with lots of fan service, but it's watchable and has decent animation. 6/10 and watching for now.

Dances with Dragons - A very generic feeling anime about 2 guys hunting dragons or something. I made it through 3/4 of the 1st episode, but it just didn't jive with me at all. I was barely paying attention and it really just didn't excite me, though some of the animation was OK. 6/10 and dropped.

Devils' Line - I couldn't make it through the 1st episode and seemed like a lot of angst. I'm not into teenage vampires. It just seemed weird and kind of boring to me in a way. Okay animation with some strange CG for the fast movement. 5/10 and dropped.

Golden Kamuy - This one had a pretty interesting premise and the animation was generally good enough, sans some 3D wildlife. I've heard this anime declared to be some people's favorite manga, so I'm giving it a chance. It didn't come off as amazing, but could have some good development. 7.5/10 and watching.

Gurazeni: Money Pitch - I know this anime was not liked by most people, but I found it pretty interesting. The protagonist is older and more grounded in reality. He's realistic and just wants to make the best out of his situation. He does maybe think too much about money, but showing in episode 2, he also needs to improve. I think being familiar with baseball helps, but honestly it's kind of my slice of life anime for the season. I like it even with slightly shoddy CG animation. I still think the animation is alright for the most part. 8/10 and watching.

Hinamatsuri - This one is easily my anime of the season so far. It is excellently animated and is just making me laugh a lot. The 2nd episode improved on the 1st and I got to stick this one out. I like that there is some seriousness as well, but there is a lot of comedy. I hope it balances both well. This shouldn't be missed IMHO. 9/10 and watching.

Isekai Izakaya: Japanese Food From Another World - Really didn't like this one. I tried to make it through an episode, but honestly it just feels like one of those show nice looking food anime without much depth. The confusion of medieval people in a present day Japanese restaurant was OK, but it did nothing for me. It was well animated though. 6/10 and dropped.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These - Another of my favorites very likely for the season. It retells the LOTGH OVA and honestly felt pretty epic and is keeping my interest. Decently well animated. It's a space opera and it looks like it's going to be a good one. 8/10 and watching.

Love To-LIE-Angle - Another anime I'm likely liking more than others. It's just a short anime about a girl who is well liked by her female housemates and has some ecchi action. It's animated OK. It's simple but watchable. 7/10 and watching.

Magical Girl Ore - I actually found this one to be pretty interesting. It was well animated and had some OK action. I thought it was just kind of funny and was a decent parody of magical girl anime. I'm sure I'll enjoy this one. 7/10 and watching.

Magical Girl Site - This isn't for the squeamish. Very graphic, and I've read up to the latest scanlation. There's going to be a lot of dread and I'll likely just tune in near the end of season to see if it passes that manga point. Just note this is extremely exaggerated like Cutey Honey, but it will be extremely graphic too. 6/10 and undecided if dropping or watching.

MEGALOBOX - I didn't find this one as amazing as other people watching it found it. The animation was very old school looking and was supposedly not simulcast in HD or something. It seems like it may have a cool story coming, and the fight action looked nice. 7.5/10 and watching.

My Sweet Tyrant - I hated this honestly. It's a short anime and has some guy pretty much saying his girlfriend is ugly and lame and whatever in the classroom, but then stalks her and finds her adorable outside of it. Just trash honestly, and really pissed me off. Some may say it's cute, but honestly someone telling that stuff in front of everyone shouldn't be in a relationship. 5/10 and dropped.

Real Girl - One I've read the manga of. The manga is full of drama and angst. I think the anime is luckily making the 2 MCs a lot more likable. They are not my favorite characters in the manga. There is some good stuff here, and suprisingly by the 2nd episode a twist from the end of the manga is already revealed. It has good animation, though I feel the main MC girl's voice may be a bit too cute. If you watch this just expect drama galore. 7/10 and watching.

Space Battleship Tiramisu - I actually kind of liked this at first. It's a parody of sorts of mecha shows and has short episodes. It was very well animated, but the MC is just weird and weird stuff happens in it. Honestly it kind of made me laugh enough, but it's easily droppable. 6.5/10 and watching for now.

Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online - I can sum this up by honestly saying i was very bored watching this. It was somewhat slow and the strategy techniques were OK I guess. Once we see the superhuman agility of the girl I was ready to forget I ever saw it. I guess it's all streamed or something for the fights, but honestly this was not my type of anime. I kind of liked the original SAO somewhat, but this isn't for me at all. Well animated, but that's about all it does for me. 6/10 and dropped.

Tada Never Falls In Love - This one is a pretty basic guy meets foreign lost girl and gets to know her and likely does fall in love with her. It's cute and has a little comedy, but it's pretty just OK. The animation is also just OK. 7/10 and watching.

Watakoi: Love Is Hard For Otaku - Honestly this is another one with older people and some of them are otaku. It can be cute and it could be good, but honestly it's hard to tell. I just hope the main girl really likes that guy. It just seems kind of random right now for the relationships, but I'll wait and see. Very well animated. 7/10 and watching.

You Don't Know Gunma Yet - Another short anime about the Gunma region. It honestly was just not very funny, and kind of boring. Was well animated though. 6/10 and dropped.

To Watch Still:

High School DxD new season (Guilty pleasure anime....I'm sure i'll like it, but will give impressions later)

Persona 5 (Not high on my list since I've played the game)

Hopefully these help or are interesting. I only have 3 for sures, but I'll see how many of my watching ones I keep.

Ahhh thank you for being the guinea pig to watch all of those. I agree with all of your reviews (for the ones I watched) except perhaps SAO-A: GGO. However I loved SAO, so that's probably why my tolerance is higher for this spin-off show. It may end up sucking, but we shall see! I've also heard good things about Hinamatsuri, I think I need to check that one out. Real Girl I need to go hunting for...is that on Crunchy or do I have to go digging for it? On your list I've seen:

High School DxD, Persona 5, Tada-kun, Megalobox,Legend of the Galactic Heroes (since Sentai released that overpriced box of doom), Caligula and the Dance w/ Dragons stupidity.

Hinamatsuri is great. The Manga is great. My favorite character is one of the supporting characters. I forget her name, but it's Hina's friend

Real Girl is on HiDive. Sad that that and Tada Kun are on there, while Watakoi is on Amazon Prime. Those are likely the best for romance this season, but a lot of people may not see it if they only have Crunchyroll. That's my favorite genre along with comedy.

I'm honestly  just an old hand anime guy who's been watching since 1994 I think. I like, but don't love anime, but some anime still get my blood boiling or at least making me feel good or laugh a lot.

Ya, I'm in the same boat. I have Amazon Prime, so I can grab that there. What's the right search parameter to get at the latest anime shows they are putting up? I tried to find it the other day and was stumped.

No idea honestly. They have a part in Amazon prime for their animation shows, but sorting by publication date doesn't work well. I just had to search by the name on Amazon prime. If it helps any I believe Magical Girl Site and Watakoi are the only simulcasts exclusive to it this season.

The best way I've found is to search different sites for a list of shows and where they're being aired. Then I go into the amazon store and search for the name in the video section and add it to my watchlist.

That last part sounds like I'm being a jerk, but I say that because there's been a few shows that didn't show up on searches in the Amazon Video app on my TV/PS4.

@nitrosmob

That's quite the write up. Thanks for that. Here's my current watch list

MEGALOBOX - I really dug this. Great animation and IMO a must watch for this season.

Comic Girls - Saw the first episode. Just another SoL show with young cute girls going about their hobby. I don't expect much from this but like Laid-Back Camp and Sakura Quest I'll stick around just so I have something light to watch.

SAO: Gun Gale Online - This was entertaining. The main character is likeable (both online & offline) Her height complex is endearing.

Yowapeda - Abu Abu Abu Abu Abu. I just can't quit this show.

My Hero Academia - 1st episode was pretty much just a recap, but I like these character building arc where some of the background people have a chance to shine a little. I'm expecting big things from you frog girl.

Food Porn (Wars) - This is a terrible show to watch at midnight. I get so hungry watching this and had to grab a snack. Not good for my belly.

Lupin Part 5 - Damn I love Lupin and I'm so happy to have it back. Nicely animated, great music and just classic good ol' Lupin.

Dagashi Kashi 2 - I know this was last season but I'm glad I waited. It's also nice that it's only 14 minutes episode. I thought the first season dragged with full episodes. They're obviously not shy with the Hotaru fan service.

I saw the first episode of Doreiku for kicks yesterday. Pretty much my impressions of it are it's an easy drop. I thought the premise was silly and I'm not really wanting to see people become slaves or whatever will happen. Animation was somewhat below average sometimes, and frankly I didn't like the MCs who are all so excited to get into these devices. Just seems stupid. Heard the manga is a mess too, so I wont bother with it. 6/10 and dropped.

Ugg that 2nd episode of Tada-kun..............corny! Ugg. I hope the third is better or this may be going to drop land.

I'll likely keep up with Magical Girl Site since it's just so over the top and somewhat silly IMHO (later on happenings in the manga). I'll keep putting out impressions every few episodes unless something causes me to drop some anime. There is a good chance I will still drop 3-4 anime this season.

Asides from the sequels/continuations from last season, I will probably keep watching Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Megalobox, Persona 5, and Hinamatsuri. The others that I'm watching are basically on permanent notice lol.

Anyone that knows more about Steins;Gate explain this season/version that's airing now? Will they slowly explain wtf is going on or was that crappy initial splurge in the first episode all I get to go on? If they will explain then it's fine, but I feel mildly lost.

I was waiting for Stien;Gate to either finish or get further along before I start. The first series started off slow, but then became a mind blown after mind blown.

My current watch list not including carryover shows are: Persona 5, SAO, Gun Gale Online, Gundam Build Driver, MEGALOBOX, Lupin Part 5 and maybe Comic Girls. I need some low key SoL.

I wasn't crazy about the Real Girl ending myself. Also those last 10-12 chapters dragged so much. I really hope these next few episodes they amp up the drama and then the last few episodes it's kind of nice and the drama dies down and such. There were so many questionable decisions by the MCs near the end of the manga that had me rolling my eyes. It was also extremely rushed too. I just am hoping the anime fixes that pacing.

Catching up with season 2 of Dagashi Kashi and now that there's more of a story I kind of want full episode now. Funny how last season dragged with the full episodes when all they did was talk about dagashi.

Agreed. It went by too fast. Was good for sure, but passed by way too quickly. Plus Haru is a hottie.

I'm enjoying season 2 more than the last for sure. And yep, a lot of Haru fan service which for a change I don't really mind. I guess that's the running joke that she's insanely hot but oblivious to the leering boys.

I actually liked the season 1 format better, though the 15 minute episodes are probably more fitting with the dagashi theme. I kind of liked the pseudo-history lesson segments, but then again I knew nothing about dagashi beforehand.

I also really liked the season 1 intro, as it felt to me like a 70s-era Lupin III type of theme. Just replace the candy with stealing and add characters to taste.

I wish it was longer. I wanted more each time. I also like the history, since I knew very little about dagashi. I loved the 2nd ED theme though. That may have been my favorite of the shows I was watching.

Finished Dagashi last night and I agree, I want more. The show never really focused on his manga passion until the last 2 episode. I forget for a while that creating manga is his dream.

Finally finished Servant x Service. This was a cute SoL but another non ending. So I guess I have to read the manga. I kinda want to know what happens. Does anyone here know?

Gundam Build Driver had a cool reference to the Gundam Cafe' in Akihabara. The show is for kids but I love these little easter eggs made for fans.

Okay, Citrus is unexpectedly enjoyable. This show was recommended to me but I took a pass because I'm not really into taboo yuri/yaoi stuff. But this is actually .... pretty interesting. I'm only 3 episodes in but I'm already completely drawn into characters. And I'm not even watching it for nose bleeding yuri scenes, I'm genuinely interested in this complex love story. Glad I didn't take a pass on this.

Citrus was my #3 pick of that season ya know :p
