Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

The falcom news is great. I love their games. Hopefully we get a worldwide launch for Ys so we don't have to wait for another poor translation.

I find it problematic that nintendo would remove native american representation in gaming, it's like they're whitewashing history.
They're removing insensitive representation of native americans in the game. Not sure how you arrived to that conclusion from the article.

It's almost like they should have made a complete JRPG from the start, and then considered expanding the story with more content or new media types if it warranted it later on (like FF7 did). Even after waiting ages for the PC version, I had resigned myself to wait until the end of 2019--and then go on a fucking scavenger hunt for all of the disparate content--before touching that game so I can experience the complete thing. I absolutely loathe what SE did with XV.

And, since I'm bitching about SE, most of the main story beats of XIII-2 came out of NOWHERE compared to the original XIII. It's a better game, but man the decision to connect them like that was financially driven and very thinly veiled, at that. And, uh, the shipping prices at their store sucks. Oh, and DQ XI having midi music is ludicrous (thank god for PC mods). Okay, I'm done, carry on.

Aghhhhh. No more Episode Aranea..... :(

I'm guessing the Alternate Ending to the game is dead too. Damn, and here I was hoping they would change that ending to something that wasn't dumb. Well, guess not.

I'm just picking up vanilla FFXV for $5 instead of dealing with the DLC. I'm not a completionist and I don't think the DLC affects the main story. I think there is one where you can get to the ending faster but nothing that appends the story.

I think the main argument for the necessity of the DLC and additional, non-game content is how much world building, back story, character development, ending explanation, etc the vanilla game doesn't have. Just buying the XV game is far from the complete story, and that's a shame.

I just noticed that BestBuy has the PS4 version of Ys VIII back in stock but it's now the standard version and not the Day One Edition. The Switch version has changed to standard edition as well.

2B looks awesome in Soul Calibur VI. They worked in so much of what she does in Nier: Automata. And I love all the characters going around in the stage's background. They're putting a lot of thought into her.

I'm going to buy the game on Black Friday. It seems like everyone is going to have it for $35. Then maybe a 20% PSN discount will knock the season pass down to $24. I pondered getting only 2B, but even if I'm not thrilled by the other dlc characters I think I'm going to want the two dlc customization packs. Create A Soul looks fun. It has an ogre mask, so I'm at least going to make Murakumo from Senran Kagura.

I've been replaying Nier: Automata, but I think I'll switch to The Witcher 3. That way I'll be able to appreciate it if Namco gave just as much effort to Geralt.

Y'know what's problematic? Replacing native americans with cowboys.

There was nothing wrong with Bravely defaults native american portrayal but I guess it's better to pretend they never existed.

Pocahontas will never get into kingdom hearts 3 at this rate.

No Mary Skelter 2 but all the other Idea Factory games were announced

Date A Live: Rio Reincarnation

Arc of Alchemist

Dragon Star Varnir

Death End Request was already announced.

and before you ask:

However, it seems that after Sony’s crackdown on the types of games published on their platform there will be some changes made to PS4 versions revealed by the publisher. These changes include changes to event scenes and removal of illustrations that show the girls in suggestive positions. In both titles, 2 CG scenes in both titles have been modified to release on the console. Idea Factory International is being completely transparent about the alterations needed to be implemented for the game to be released on the PlayStation platform.

Tired of this censorship bull. Still Dragon Star is one of my more wanted RPGs....so I'll get that at least. Just noticed Date a Live is some visual novels....so yeah that's a must buy too.

Be the hero, Nintendo.

I have a few questions about Date A Live. It's also an anime, yea? Did it start as a game? Is the game high on date sim elements?

Unsure if this is something I'd be interested in.

Date a Live is going to be uncensored on the PC though, so just skip the console version if you want it. Being a LN I can't imagine the system requirements are very steep.

Does this mean the Royal Edition is now truly the complete edition now? Or it won't includes the upcoming unreleased dlc?

It should be as complete as you can get though. I doubt even SE would release another retail product just to add a single piece of DLC...

So in other words, they will now take even longer to offer up newer versions of current popular IP's. So they have spent tons of time and resources offering old titles "new" again on the NS & 3DS, and now the plan is to add more to older titles at a cost? Any plans for actual new games, or has this company just jumped on the assbackwards train with no signs of getting back on track?

Bruh. You gotta find a new shtick.

Umm.. have you watched any other Disney movie?
Aladdin's story is 100% legit! I will not hear otherwise. The SNES game is practically a Nat Geo documentary.

But yeah, in terms of Pocahontas, the real story is pretty messed up.

Speaking of Disney, can we just skip the live action adaptions and just go straight for the CG style adaption the princesses have in the Wreck It Ralph 2 movie? kthnxbye

Wasn't this already known when the PS4 500 Million Limited Edition one was announced or the Spider-Man one?
The new quieter versions of the PS4 Pro started with the RDR2 Bundle. The LE and Spiderman versions aren't part of the new revision

The RDR2 system may be a new revision, but I can confirm that both the 500 million & Spidy system are *significantly* quieter than the original Pros. My OG Pro was obnoxiously loud, and I never hear either of these 2.

Couldn't you technically just gut all the bad parts of your pro and replace them with the new components?

I'm assuming that the only thing that is new is maybe a new heat-pipe and fan.

I HATEEEEE Amazon's new video game pre-order system. Pretty much nothing thread related gets $10 Amazon credit. I'm frankly likely going to end my Amazon at the end of the year. Really only use it for Amazon Prime anime for the season and the occasional Amazon order (cut back a lot).

I'm pretty much at the point where i'm going to pick and choose my niche games all the time because of no discounts at all upon release.

I'll just make it a point to get through my backlog and add the occasional game, though Date A Live and Dragon Star are right up my alley and still likely will be bought by me on release.... The games do go down in price eventually, such as me always getting the Atelier games for around $20.

Sorry about the rant.

Pretty late visual novel news update:

Sol Press announced quite a few things at Kumoricon:

Choose Your Mistress (NSFW)

Irotoridori no Sekai (NSFW)

Love Among the Sunflowers (NSFW)

My Fair Princess (NSFW)

Nukitashi (NSFW)

Onii Kiss: Onii-chan, Where’s my Kiss? (NSFW)

The Future Radio & the Artificial Pigeons (NSFW)

Under One Wing (NSFW)

Also they will now have their own digital platform Hyourin. There are too many of these. On it they will put their light novels, manga, and visual novels. Frankly i'll stick to buying the games on Steam, but it could help in the future to bring things out faster.

Link

Impressions and descriptions below:

Choose Your Mistress - This takes place at Katsuranomiya Academy, a private school for only the richest of ladies, where you work as a butler. There are five ladies who are truly the elite of the elite, and you must choose one to serve. All have S or M tendencies though. Frankly this looks like an above average nukige. The art is really nice, and maybe it has a real story. 1st play of the announcements.

Irotoridori no Sekai - This one has a guy named Yuuma, who as a child received a power where if he touches someone, he will heal them. This strong power has a side effect where he loses some memories. One day a girl descends from the sky and says, "Mr. Magician, please save me." I'll be honest, I don't like the art as much. It looks bright and fuzzy and somewhat simple. I do think the story itself could be a good one, as shown by other visual novels like Da Capo with magic. Still it's long and looks to be worth playing. 2nd play of the announcements.

Love Among the Sunflowers - This one is about youth and stars a guy named Yuu. He meets 4 girls whom each have their own issues. They are Ai, the school’s #1 beauty who calls herself a delinquent; Akane, his classmate who yearns for the spotlight; Shiori, a quiet girl who is looking for ghosts; and Kana, his osananajimi who wants to get along with her friends once more. It sounds very slice of life like and also has OK looking art. I love these type of visual novels. They flow nicely and usually have innocent first love. An easy play for me. 3rd play of the announcements.

My Fair Princess - Ryokufuuin Gakuen is a world-famous school for the rich. Satoshi attends this school even though his family is poor. He got in on a scholarship, though the other attendees do not know he is poor. One day, the top celeb of the school, Kana, told him that he will be the lead for this year’s school festival, Ryokufuusai. This looks somewhat generic. It looks like standard fare stuff, but that's OK sometimes. 4th play of announcements.

Nukitashi - This takes place on Seiran Island, a paradise where perverted sex is permitted by law. The transfer student Junnosuke is a proud virgin that steadfastly values chastity. He believes in no sex without love, but the island has strict laws. Those who don't have sex are immediately arrested and given fellatio and intercourse. The SS of the student council are ready to mess with this guy. This sounds and looks ridiculous. This a nukige I think, though it sounds kind of hilarious. The art looks decent enough. It looks fun and just kind of silly. 5th play of announcements.

Onii Kiss: Onii-chan, Where’s my Kiss? - The Seguchi family has a very peculiar house rule. Possibly influenced by their mother who kisses practically everyone, all four of the imoutos yearn for kisses from their onii-chan for practically everything. The brother (he has no name!) leaves the house to concentrate on his studies, but his sisters end up visiting. This very, very likely nukige is trying to appeal to a certain niche. Kind of somewhat average art. Story doesn't sound amazing either. Still pretty highly regarded though. I like the Imopara games, so this is a must for me. 6th play of announcements.

The Future Radio & the Artificial Pigeons - This story is about Yamanashi Sora, whom just rebuilt a radio out of the parts he had laying around. The artificial pigeons devored the radio waves. He hears a transmission from the future where it says he's going to die at terminal 1. He ends up going to terminal 1 and meets a silver haired girl named Hazuki Kaguya. She says he wont die cause she decided she wants to see him smile. The art in this one looks very nice. It almost like a painted look. The story sounds unique and frankly this looks like a must play for me. 7th play of announcements.

Under One Wing - The grandson of a legendary ‘Fairy Fight’ (FF) player, Jun’ichi came to the former FF powerhouse Shouou Gakuen and was given the rare fuselage ‘Shinden’. He arrives at a student dormitory but it's all full of girls. They are a group of misfits, so how will they compete in competitive FF aerial battlefield? This sounds kind of wacky and the flying around reminds me of If My Heart Had Wings. I liked that one enough. It looks visually competent enough and could be fun. 8th play of announcements.

I will buy and play every one of these. I feel like Sol Press is really coming out of the gates as a competent visual novel localizer. I will support them wholeheartedly, as all of these games seem to have some good quality to them.

I don't think anyone should pick vanilla Final Fantasy XV over the Royal Edition. It's not just the character episodes outside of the main game you'd be missing. To the main game the Royal Edition adds being able to switch to the other three main characters during battle, and a new area near the end of the game.

Being able to switch to the other characters adds variety to the game. Gladio, Prompto, and Ignis all have different play styles. It makes the game more enjoyable.

In the vanilla game once you get to the end-game you pretty much just walk up to the last boss fights. I thought it was anticlimactic, and it seemed like the developers didn't have time to make an end level. The Royal Edition adds in a final level, and some extra fights along the way makes the end-game feel more epic.

If you get the vanilla edition then decide you want the character episodes and the Royal Edition gameplay upgrades know that they are not packaged together. The cost of both will probably be more than what a copy of Final Fantasy XV: Royal Edition can be found for on sale.

Royal Edition also has a new fishing spot, and the ability to go into first-person mode.

If you get a copy of Final Fantasy XV: Royal Edition you also get several extra costumes for Noctis (which come with minor stat boosts). And, you get the online multiplayer Comrades game.

There are games where a vanilla copy is good enough, but I don't think Final Fantasy XV is one of them.

Thanks @deadofnight for this review. I've already sunk in 60-70 hours into the regular "vanilla" FFXV. I haven't done a single DLC, neither have Iooked them up on youtube. Probably in a year I'll pick up the Royal Edition if they don't put out another, actually complete disc out. So can/should I do a New Game+ or something similar? I may want to re-experience the story but not really go through the hunts / sidequests again.

Here are some actual deals in the Deal Thread

Final Fantasy XV Royal Edition will be 19.99 at Best Buy during Black Friday.

It's 24.99 right now at Gamestop if you have a Pro Membership

Evil Within 2 is also 14.99 at Gamestop right now if you have Pro Membership
