Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

Gah! Knew I should have bought the FH3 Platinum Bundle when it was on sale for $39.xx this summer. I figured it would go on sale during the holiday sale for the same amount but now it doesn't look like it. Guess I'll keep on waiting...

Didn't see it posted in the last few pages (this thread moves so fast I cant keep up) but Microsoft/Bing rewards has $5 and $10 gift cards at 30% off: $5 for 3500 points (down from 5000) and $10 for 7000 points (down from 10,000). Just picked up one of each for myself.

Just in time for the Christmas sale. Good looks.

Yeah it is the same one that was posted before black friday. I guess they never ran out of codes. I was debating cashing in for $20 or keep on pushing for a full year of live.

I kind of want to have live and game pass paid for through 2020 or when the next box comes.

TA 12 Days of Christmas

Day 9

Nine Letters Spelling

Unlock achievements to spell CHRISTMAS using the first letter of the achievement name.

------

Looking ahead and thinking of what might come next... last year we had:

Game completion

versus (tag based)

3.0 ratio (ratio based)

Spell NOEL

Five rare

single player (player based)

achievements in different games

cooperative (tag based)

action-adventure (genre based)

10G (Gamerscore based)

Main storyline (tag based)

Leap Frog (ratio based)

This year, it's been Weird gamerscore, tag based, rare, tag based, GwG, GS based, Back compat, Tag based, spelling.  I've crossed out the ones from last year that match up, and as such...

It is my academically researched and no-real-evidence based guess that, for the last 3 days, we'll see: a ratio based challenge (I'm thinking "Get X achievements over 2.0 ratio), a genre based challenge (maybe "Racing, Fighting, or Sports") , and a return of Leap Frog as the final day.

I’m not seeing it.

So this true achievement thing is for bragging rights only, right?
Just curious. I’m wondering when the next Gamepass quest will launch.

Recertified 2TB External for $28 straight from Western Digital. Bought one of these last time to get some more backlog storage.

https://www.wd.com/products/wd-recertified/my-passport.html#RWDBYFT0020BRD-WESN

They also have a 3TB for $36 but it's non portable and needs an AC adapter.

https://www.wd.com/products/wd-recertified/my-book-new.html
I bought a 1TB last time they had these and it works great. Anyone needing storage for their 360, a 2TB drive for $28 (or $32, depending on the color) is pretty dang good.

For the 360, aren't there advantages to having a Microsoft hard drive? Looking at a 500 GB online for $10.
No, but if it's that cheap I'd be wary unless it's officially refurbished. If it's used and that low it might have seen a lot of use, and if it's that low new it's likely some bootleg junk.

I Think the main advantage was the official Microsoft 360 HDD could play certain OG XBox games, but with XBox One having that feature it isn't as much of a huge bullet point.

an official xbox internal hard drive is required for playing original xbox games on xbox 360.

i think you can use other drives but it requires several steps of software modification and i don't think it's worth the effort if you have a chance to buy the real thing for $10.

I hear ya. This one is still in the packaging from a lady on Facebook Marketplace so I'm inclined to believe it's legit. Looks like this: https://www.gamestop.com/xbox-360/accessories/xbox-360-500gb-media-hard-drive/116104

Side note: It was listed at $22 and I asked if she would take $15. She then countered and said she'd take $10. Best negotiation yet.

Speaking of hard drives, this isn't for everyone, more for a handful of games you access a lot and need a $7 to $10 or so Sata III to USB case or at least cable also, but by far has been my most bang for the buck purchase I've made for gaming in awhile. Was trying to beat the server closure tonight/tomorrow on Final Fantasy XV "comrades" DLC and if anyone has ever played that it's sit back and literally wait minutes for not just the initial load but between individual missions. The difference was crazy after I installed this. Threw Red Dead Redemption 2 on it, didn't stopwatch the thing but the initial load there I was probably seeing 10-12 old west pictures burn in and out during the initial loading screen now I'm down to 3-4. As a system upgrade I highly recommend.

If we are talking about internal, then an official one is required to play BC at all, discs or digital. Last I was aware, you also had to have an officially supported storage size for the formatting to work. The last time I saw someone bothering with this was to keep the unique shell the Halo 3 edition had while getting more storage.

I really want to replace my internal X1 drive with an SSD. I have a crapton of external drives right now, but it'd be nice to have something for long loading games I'm currently playing.

I didn't do a drive swap, just added it on as an external

edit: I believe the USB 3.0 is already faster than the Xbox internals IDE's

It's doable, though the drive on the X1 is a pain in the ass to get to. I used a 2TB Seagate Firecuda SSHD, but you could go with a full-blown SSD if you want to spend the money.

i think you're right. even xbox one x is limited to sata 2 with internal drives.

https://www.tomshardware.com/news/xbox-scorpio-engine-soc-details,35282.html

my problem is i've already maxed out my usb ports with high-capacity storage
I wasn't maxed had a back and that front port still open, although I couldn't have something plugged into the front port just for aesthetics. This is just me I'd ask myself if I'm going to access all that stuff any time soon, or do I want an incredibly better load time wait for the stuff I'm going to play. Granted I don't know if it makes much difference on everything, but that FF 15 and Red Dead 2 I've been playing the last couple weeks, well worth it.

For anyone playing Race the Sun (I see a few CAG names fly by as I soar through the wasteland), there’s an easy portal that appears in either level 2 or level 3 tonight. Not always in the same spot but it was pretty consistent. Gives you an achievement when you enter it once, 4 times, and 8 times (doesn’t matter that it’s technically the “same” portal each time). All in all knocked out 7 achievements in the game tonight. It totally scratches that Star Fox itch without all the crappy non-space missions.

How is it? I enjoyed the heck out of the first, which I bought for like $2 or something, so I’m glad this one went free. Probably next on my play list now that I’ve got a bunch finished in Race the Sun. Unless my clan drags me back for some more Destiny 2 nonsense (I need that hockey fight emote, though).
QUBE is really good, much improved from the 1st (which I also liked a lot). my only complaint is you walk REALLY slow.

And thanks for the race the sun tip. Game is hard AF

Anyone stuck on the 20s TA christmas challenge, DOA 5 final core whatever (the free one), you can knock out all of them in less than 20 mins

It applies to discs, too. Obnoxious, but I doubt anyone is trying to play OG Halo 2 on a 360 these days.

For everything else, USB storage works great since they removed size limitations, especially with all these GWG and multi-disc releases (ME2-3, FFXIII) that take up so much space.

Oh, thanks for this. I had kind of written it off when I saw the high completion time, but it looks like it wouldn't be that bad to get like 80% of the achievements. I only have 1 20G left to go, but I'll keep this in mind for some of the upcoming ones.

Well that was a hell of a lot of grinding but I officially finished the FFXV Comrades achievements.
I actually ended up enjoying it after i negated the load times and figured out the crafting system. Don't even feel like I ruined the FF 15 campaign, like they warned. I couldn't tell you what the heck happened.

Waiting for the game to go on sale so that I get in on this!
Yeah about that... it's shutting down for FF 15 as DLC on December 12th, but it is being spun off into it's own thing. That's why I grabbed a Royal Edition over Black Friday sales even though I had a copy from 2 years ago Black Friday I paid more for.

It shuts down in like 24 hours...

So let me get this straight, they are taking away something that people paid for only to re-sell it again as standalone? Sounds shady as fuck! Why does it even NEED to be standalone? Just keep it as part of the main game. Why does every decision with this game need to be to complicated? What a mess!

It's free if you already owned it as DLC.

an official xbox internal hard drive is required for playing original xbox games on xbox 360. not sure if this applies to discs but i know it is required for games on demand (aka digital).

i think you can use other drives but it requires several steps of software modification and i don't think it's worth the effort if you have a chance to buy the real thing for $10.
The issue is you need software on your PC capable of partitioning the drive properly. Not regular partition software either, software specifically designed for partitioning the Xbox 360 Hard Drive. The emulator files went on a separate hidden partition IIRC. i think I did it originally 8 years ago for my first modded console, using modified files that made even more games playable. I haven't messed with it in forever, so my memory is fuzzy. Anyway, the requirement for official drives was because of that. If you plugged an unofficial drive of the correct size in an unmoddifed xbox and formatted it, I don't think it would partition it properly. At least from what little I can recall. I assume using the same software I used, with any drive size MS allows (any size drive that wasn't a size MS offered wouldn't work at least back then on unmodified consoles) you could still install the official emulator files. I may even still have the original files archived on some hard drive somewhere in my house.

post below/above is correct, you still get it if you had already played and downloaded it I assume. I just had to grind it out because most likely the achievements would be lost. Why every decision with the game has to be complicated I'm sure Square has wondered that themselves why it was in development since FF 13 if I recall under the name 13 versus. Recent actions suggest they are cutting bait on it now and just saying yeah we don't know what were doing anymore, hold out hope for FF 7 remake, and Kingdom Hears 3 will hit early next year.
