God of War Collection
Sly Cooper Collection
Jak Collection
Ratchet and Clank Collection

Honestly, if you can play these on any of the consoles, I'd recommend that. I haven't played the Sly Collection yet, but the God of War Collection and Ratchet and Clank Collection are not ported very well, and I ended up hating each game after finishing them. And I have not heard good things about the Jak Collection.

Sly Cooper Thieves in Time on the other hand, played and looked quite nice on the Vita. One of my highlights.

There are a number of similar games that are available on consoles, the Trails of Cold Steel games are my absolute high point that just lend themselves nicely to the Vita. It really depends what you like and how you like to play. I get about 1 day a week console time but I get time everyday on my Vita and Switch Lite. Playing the Trails games just didn't make sense to me on console but was perfect on the Vita. There is a lot of story and relationships that develop that would get lost waiting a week to catch up on. That really hit home when the third game came out on PS4 recently.

So while you asked about exclusives to the system, I put in a strong vote for some of the cross system games if that is where you have the most game time. Just my humble opinion based on my gaming habits (or I should say restrictions lol).

I think a lot of the recommendations come down to preferences and availability. I end up playing handhelds a lot due to my busy schedule, but I don't want to play a worse version of a game due to that, so I focus on games that aren't hindered by being on Vita and save the other experiences for when I have time at home. Outside of indie games and visual novels, the Vita version of a game is going to be worse than its console counterpart in 90%+ of cases. I care about that type of thing quite a bit, so my Vita shelves are full of nothing but exclusives, VNs, and indie games.

Hmm, there really aren't a *ton* of strictly exclusive games for the Vita worth worrying about (if we're not counting the limited print stuff), it's more about which games you'd prefer to play portably. Most of my recommendations are also available on consoles, but their handheld versions are exclusive to Vita:

Muramasa
Dragon's Crown
Odin Sphere
Gravity Rush
Danganronpa 1-3
Toukiden Kiwami/Toukiden 2
Touch My Katamari

Also, many of those limited print games can be had for a decent price now. It's worth looking them up if you're interested.

I was specifically talking about those Sony PS2 ported collections being so poor.

Otherwise I think most Vita ports of console games are solid. I really like 'Need for Speed Most Wanted' on Vita, and I also have that on WiiU and PC. All the WB published games are really good on Vita as well. Same goes for cross-platform games released along their console counterpart like the before mentioned 'Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time' 'Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3' and 'Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed.'

I would like to point out while the other collections are not the best ports, the Sly Collection is an excellent port and runs very well in my opinion. I played through and finished both Sly Cooper and Sly 3 and I had no issues with either game.

Lots of factors to consider with this. How fussy are you with condition, with being complete, etc? I'm a fuss pot, so I'd never even consider anything other than eBay--due to the selection, pictures, ability to ask questions etc. If you don't care about that, though, maybe start with eBay anyway--for a jumping off point--and then compare to shopping results from a Google search.
Thanks. I'm not that picky at all. I really only want one for racing games mainly. I guess I'll try my luck with eBay.

Thanks for the input everyone!

The main purpose of picking up a Vita was for the exclusives.  I don't have a ton of free time and I don't have slivers of time to use a Vita during the day during the commute or breaks.  Any free time I have I have a console available unless I travel for work which is not often.  My preference is to play on a console if available.

Think I'm gonna target Persona 4 Golden, Muramasa and Shinobido 2 for sure, maybe Danganronpa.

Also, love that this thread is about gaming and not about flipping unlike most other threads on the site these days.

I thought this thread was mostly about trying to build a complete collection, not gaming.

There was a lot more of that back when a complete Vita set was only like 150 games or so. Nowadays we mostly bitch about all the ways Sony messed up and torpedoed such a great machine.

I'm like 99% sure you don't need a sim card for wifi. You only need a sim if you have a model that has 3G, but wifi is built in afaik
You do not need a sim card to use the wifi. I dont think you can even activate a data plan on the vita anymore (only reason you would have needed a sim card in the first place was to have a data plan so you would not need wifi)

LRG killed that idea for most of us. When it was 130'ish games it seemed like a plausible goal as only a few games were that rare or expensive. Now... nope. No point in collecting for vita outside of the games I'd want the most and I own most of that already.

Did anyone have a Vita game in their top 3 played games on the year end stats through PSN? I am fairly certain I played Rayman Legends longer than my 2nd and 3rd games.
Also not sure how Elder Scrolls Online was not on my top 3.

I play most games around the same amount of time, including Vita titles, so my Top 3 are extreme cases almost.

1) Assassin's Creed: Origins (includes the DLC) - 84 hours

2) Yakuza 0 - 32 hours

3) Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and 2.5 - 25 hours

I ran through KH2.5 quick on the easiest difficulty because I wasn't enjoying it. Most games take me around 20-30 hours, and I don't play multiplayer except for some 'Rocket League' around seasonal events.

I did actually but i think it was a mistake. I had Reality Fighters clocked in at 300-something hours as my 2nd game which can't be right. I played it years ago but decided to finish up the last few grindy trophies for the platinum at the beginning of the year. One trophy involved playing online which i did on spoofed firmware. Not sure if that caused the error.

My number one game was listed as Persona 4 Golden at 96 hours. I'm not even near the end if the game yet. Really thought I'd have a different game listed there. Next games are Saints Row 3 at 89 hours and Remember Me at 70 hours. Makes my list seem like I was in a time warp. Even my Switch list was really low. I think I spent the majority of the time on BFV and Modern Warfare on PC

Even better, my top game was a PSP game (though played on the Vita).

YOU PLAYED 10 Different Games
YOUR TOP GAMES
1 SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI PERSONA 3 PORTABLE
7 HOURS

2 SUPER MEGA BASEBALL
5 HOURS

3 KINGDOM HEARTS - HD 1.5+2.5 REMIX -
5 HOURS
Mostly, I let the kids play the PS4 (almost always Fortnite, ugh....) and I did what gaming I did on the PC.

124 hrs on Trails of Cold Steel 2 on Vita was my top game. Followed by Rage 2 on the PS4 and Trails of Cold Steel 3 on the PS4. I knew Trails 2 would top the list but surprised by the others. I am pretty sure Trails 1 on the Vita was my top game last year 😀

My Top 3 were all PS4 games.

Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and 2.5 HD (53 hours, most of that in the BBS playthroughs I was doing for Plat)

Final Fantasy VIII HD (50 hours, lots of Triple Triad, getting that Plat trophy)

Dragon Quest XI (41 hours, also to Plat)

I've been working through a lot of backlog games this year, and my 3DS, PS4, and XB1 had more than the Vita.  I started up on a few of those games in November (Grand Kingdom and Tales of Hearts R), but it wasn't enough to overtake the existing leaders.

I love looking back at stuff like this. I actually went a step further and kept a full list of everything I 'consumed' last year. Now that we're into 2020, it's been a lot of fun to look back over the year and see what I was doing at what time, remember what I had going on, etc.

For those curious and/or those who want to steal the format for themselves (lol):

Neat idea, I might need to borrow that :). Good time to start here at the beginning of the year

Ok, I finally got around to picking up a Vita. Always planned on getting one but life happens and I recently realized I better act while there are still some in decent condition to be had. Picked up a PCH-1101, seems to be in great working order aside from a few cosmetic scuffs and a screen protector that feels gritty as hell. Seems well cared for but used nonetheless. Still have to pick up a sim card and memory card... one of the reasons I wasn't too eager to get into the Vita.

My question to all of you is what exclusives should I pick up? I'm not talking about limited run type stuff, just the best standard releases that were exclusive to the console.

I have a few of the bases covered already:

  • Tearaway
  • Rayman Legends
  • Minecraft PlayStation Vita Edition
  • Assassins Creed III Liberation
  • Killzone Mercenary
  • Freedom Wars
  • Uncharted Golden Abyss
  • Wipeout 2048
  • Gravity Rush
  • Soul Sacrifice
  • Resistance Burning Skies
  • Unit 13
What you guys think, suggestions?
Everything you don’t already own... 😀

I had Neptunia U Action Unleashed with 96 hours or something like that... I grinded the platinum, but I know I didn’t play it for even a quarter of that. Guess I just left it on a few times and that screwed it up. No other explanation that I can think of.

Sorry for back to back posts...

His Vita is the 3G model. But you are correct, the SIM card would only be used for 3G internet access and has zero bearing on functionality of the Wi-Fi connectivity.

Just checked Persona and I've actually only spent 71 hours on the game. So I'm not sure how PS came up with my stats

Yeah that's what I figured, but as someone who never owned the 3G model, I didn't want to spread any false info, since we all know Sony had some quirks when it came to the vita.

Time spent in the menus or going back to previous saves are also counted. There's been speculation that time spent in sleep mode may also be counted.

That would explain all those hours "playing" mega man 9

Well well well, someone finally decided to acknowledge the elephant.

VVVVVV’s source code is already free and the game still isn’t out for a dead system
Well, one thing everyone learned when they released the source code for VVVVVV is that the game was originally developed for Actionscript 3.0, and then used some of Adobe's tools to port it from Flash to other platforms. (similar to how Scott Pilgrim was developed)

It was also learned that as a kind of rookie effort, VVVVVVV's original code is a bit of a snarled mess. I don't hold that against the original developer. Among programmers, we've all been there. Early projects are always learning experiences, and half the time you're just struggling to get things working. Worrying about re-optimizing and cleaning up code always comes later, sometimes much later. (sometimes never) Like with any discipline, looking back on your earliest work can be a bit embarrassing. Kudos to Terry Cavanagh for having the courage to share one of his earlier projects like this.

Kind of a random question, but since I’m planning on picking up a bluetooth Retro-bit Saturn pad at some point in the near future (mostly for emulation and fighting games on my PC) and they’re supposed to be compatible with the PS3, does anyone happen to know if they’ll also work with a PSTV? It’s not listed in the official info, but outside of this thread I’m not sure anyone even remembers the PSTV exists.

Really throwing me, my local GameStop which has not stocked Vita games for a year shows these in stock.
Might be worth it to check, there is always the chance they don't have them on display but have them in a drawer or back room. I've seen that happen with other titles at Gamestop.

This. Anytime I go to a Gamestop I haven't stopped in before, I ask the employees to check the drawers for old Vita stuff. There's always a slim chance you'll find something buried that hasn't been gutted.

Theoretically it should work. I'm guessing it registers from the system's perspective as a generic Dual Shock 3 clone, but you may want to consider contacting Retro-Bit's customer service and inquiring with them about this.

Odds of getting a complete used online? In my experience visual novels seem to come complete but not sure I want to risk it. If they don't come complete, can they be returned to a local store for a full refund?
As quoted on my previous post, they converted new to used. Still YMMV, but odds of getting a complete copy are increased. Returns are accepted within 7 days.

^ This, there's a lot of anti-Vita predjudice against from many GameStop employees for some unknown reason. I've had to ask at all of my area GameStop locations too see Vita games they didn't have out on the shelf over the years as they just don't even care to bother trying selling them it seems. Really not going to miss this miserable excuse for a video game store when it crashes and burns.

My favorite answer to this is that they have no room to display the Vita stuff when all it needs is a 2 foot long shelf... just spine some ps3 games. Same logic as throwing out the cases to make room I guess.
I am happy I did all my Vita hunting several years ago when it was not as hard to find cases. eStarland is still good for those still hunting. they state what comes with each game and price loose stuff less than complete stuff and adjust trade prices on completeness.
