The hack is coming, it's just been delayed by COVID like everything else. It's been frustrating - seemed like it would be out within months of the system - but it IS coming.

Not really understanding how a hack, something that inherently takes place in front of a computer, could be delayed by covid. Unless hackers do most of their work at sports venues or restaurants, I'm not really seeing the correlation here.

I never was tempted to buy this last year since I didn't know the console except by name. I started with an NES and went up from there, so this console mini didn't appeal to me. Plus it seems it didn't have that much universal appeal. I wonder if this is going to be massively produced now since it's still orderable on amazon.
I was always interested in the TG16 but they weren't around in stores for too long and the prices the consoles and games go for now are too high for me to invest in the real deal. The appeal for the TG16 definitely doesn't match most of the other mini consoles since those consoles were generally a lot more popular. Konami really did a great job with the TG16 mini though it's easily the best thing they have released in a long time in terms of sheer quality.

Yeah, I've been following it myself. I don't know how COVID had any impact on the hack though, but I do know the same folks have been working on other projects as well and the TG16 is likely low on the priority list unfortunately. Hope we get a hack soon though.

I don't see nearly as much of a need for a hack on my Turbo Mini. There just aren't very many other games that I feel the need to put on it. I'm pretty happy with the game selection they provided, and I love the interface on the Mini. With the NES and SNES minis, there were clear omissions that I felt the need to include. With the Genesis, there were a handful of titles I wouldn't mind adding, but there was much less urgency, as significantly more of the must-haves were pre-installed. The PS1 mini was overall just crap so hacking it was able to improve the selection, but I stopped bothering with better alternatives readily available. (I have multiple hacked PSTVs now, WAY better for playing PS1 games)

I have 2 of each of the other minis (1 to hack, 1 to keep originally as-is), but I bit on this now. I was waiting for a price drop when first announced and available (and still will for #2), but this has been managed better than the other mini availability. And since only available at Amazon, I'm not optimistic for a serious price drop.

Long way of saying, "in for one".

I want Snatchers in English.

Honestly, if you are going to go to the trouble of hacking then go ahead and go the Raspberry Pi route and put on it whatever floats your boat. Setting up one of those is pretty much the same difficulty of hacking one of these. I have one of these Minis and love it, but also have a Pi (well several actually) for things like Legendary Axe since there were licensing issues with the mini.

The only one I have hacked is the PS1 and that's because I got it cheap and the thing is pretty much garbage with the included game selection.

Funny. I got my mini from Amazon.jp at list ($99.99)and like it. Not really in love with it like some others but to each their own. It’s a little silly paying over retail for these. They come back in stock often.

A hacked mini has value for me over RPI because it is WAY easier for kids or visitors to screw up settings on a RPI. On a mini, the worst they can do is overwrite a save state. The number of times I've had to reimage a card because someone botched something up is ridiculous.

Either way though, if you are willing to ditch a flashy front end, there are far better options than both of these.

the turbopad replica isn’t getting enough love...the replica controllers are a lot of the allure for me personally.

otherwise, just coinops with a xbox controller or 8bitdo.

Quick question before I order one... can I use any of the power adapters from my other mini systems with this?

Just got a shipping notification for the TG-16 mini ordered 9-2 just now ... originally was estimated to arrive 9-27, so they must have gotten them off the boat fast!  :whee:

This is true, it requires a good bit of setup to make it "idiot proof", and a selection of a good case. Retroflag cases are great options because of safe reset and safe shutdown switches and scripts, and they look great. And you have to do things like disable the run menu (once it is setup) and maybe even put it into Kiosk or Kids mode. But you can make it much, much harder to screw up - I do those things when I've made them for friends. Also you can set up a good theme to make it prettier, even though the Emulation Station UI is a bit more clunky.

Now all that said, I am a big fan of the official options, I have most of them - NES, SNES, Genesis, Turbo, Neo Geo and PS Mini so I'm definitely not dissing them. In fact, the Turbo is probably my favorite of the lot and I highly recommend it. But I like to keep them in "stock" condition, sans the PS because of the glaring game list issues (even many of the games I like are the subpar PAL versions) and it can still operate as "stock" if I don't plug in the OTX cable and the USB stick (but it did require loading Bleemcast on the system to enable it).

I have a retropi, NES clasic (x2, with extra official controllers I got for $5 each), SNES Classic, and PS1 Classic (x2, it was cheap)... and of those I much prefer the simplicity of the NES & SNES classics.  Once modded (very simple) and you get a few extra games on there... you don't need any extra cables coming out of them unless you want to overload it with games (which I don't think is needed).  They just work.  I still love my retropi, and the PS1Classic is a great little system once modded... even without analog sticks on the stock controllers... but... I'd never let others play my retropi setup unless I was there with them changing the games and stuff and making sure it was properly shut down when done.

Besides the TG16, i have a second spare un-modded mini console...but I prefer just adding games to the stock ui versus and anything else.

I also only add games relevant to that particular console.

I just adore the TG16 menu music...it’s something else :D

My TG-16 showed up today, have buyer's remose... this thing is huge! Maybe should have waited for mini-2.0 which might be actually mini  :bomb:

Mine didn't have any shrink wrap and came in a bubble mailer, luckily no dents. BONK!

People have only been complaining about the size of the TG since it was announced last July...

Don't regret it, it's a wonderful system and actually has the presence of the original console. Wonderful to hear Amazon still doesn't give a shit about packaging electronics properly..

It is very accurate to it's original counter parts size, and why I absolutely hated the appearance of that console, especially when compared to the minimalist look and feel of the PCE. I only bought my TG16 back in the day, so I could get the CD drive for cheap, as the CD drive for the PCE required my first born, so yeah.............LOL

For anyone who didn't have any sense of nostalgia for this thing, I recommended those people import the Japanese or EU versions, as the NA was easily the least pleasing(and super-sized).

Yea, I wasn't paying much attention to the reviews as I was more interested the eventual TG Express possibly. It's almost the size of the Wii U side-by-side heh!

I still prefer the black console and TG font vs PCE swirly.

Does anyone make a wireless controller that is compatible with NES + SNES + PS + TG16 minis? O:)

Indeed. That's why I went with the PC Engine Mini. Its size is snug between the SNES Classic and Genesis Mini.

Sadly, no. The TG16 mini seems to require specific controllers, as opposed to standard USB compatibility. You can't simply plug whatever you like into the TG16 mini and expect it to work. (I tried)

I went with the 8bitdo 2.4 Ghz wireless controllers for supporting my TG16 mini wirelessly. They work great with any of the TG16 mini models, and they can even work with the Nintendo Switch. But they don't work with the PS Classic, or with standard PC. However, they are one of the better and cheaper options for controllers for this thing. 8bitdo's controllers in general are high quality with good performance, and their 2.4 Ghz models are less flexible, but very reliable with almost no lag.

Yeah, this is a personal preference of course, and I know first hand how many people like "black" consoles, but for the life of me, I'll only buy one when it is the only option available. I actually imported the PCE well before the TG16 was ever even announced, and once it was, it went from being one of the coolest systems I've seen to this day, into something I only bought so I could get the cheaper CD drive. And I have zero good memories for it, as I couldn't stand how NEC changed it for the US. The US SNES is another sore point, but that's best saved for a different time. LOL

I loved the PCE, as it was one of my first times stepping in to the import scene back in the day, and I have so many great memories from that time. Since the PCE was mini to begin with, this was probably the least mini of the ones offered so far, while the TG16 mini was almost a full size system, and very far from anything I would rate "mini" ANYTHING! LOL

Call me crazy, but I still feel like I'm better off buying two 8BitDo PCE style controllers for $50 than buying this console with only one controller for $100.

Until you start caring about input latency, proper turbo switches, and using them for things outside of the Turbo Mini.

The 8BitDo PCE pads work in a standard USB slot just as the replica TurboPads do.
Yes... with about 10 to 20 times input lag. Also don't think the turbo button's are reassignable, in case you were thinking of using it for systems requiring more than 2 buttons.

TG16 showed up yesterday. I placed the order on the 9th with the notice of it not coming until the 21st. Came in a plastic envelope with no padding... never had that happen before. Luckily no damage to the box.
Anyway, busted it out yesterday and while I was plugging in the hdmi cord, the right leg of my tv broke off. Fortunately, with the help of gorilla glue, I was back in business today. Loving Ys Book 1 for its simplicity. Great “mini” system.

Mine also showed up in a plastic envelope yesterday. The corners of the box were beat up.
That's irritating as hell. The one I got from Amazon JP came damaged surrounded by the thin plastic bag it was shipped in. The TG 16 box was basically held together by packing tape it was so badly damaged. Sucks to pay for an overpriced collector's item and have it poorly packaged to the point there is damage. Disappointing to hear that Amazon USA is not shipping the TG 16 mini in a box. Fortunately the CoreGrafx mini I ordered from Amazon JP more recently came safely packaged in a box.

Today I briefly ventured into the pc engine side of things... any suggestions on which games are playable to someone with zero Japanese language experience? I know Snatcher is out...

I LOVED Ys Books I & II as a kid. It is insane that I was able to pull together enough money to get a TG16-CD as a "kid"

Anyway I had no idea Ys was on these systems and it seems way harder to resist picking one up now.

Very surprising legendary axe and bonk's adventure are not on the games list.
agreed...i feel like the tg16 mini should have come with keith courage, legendary axe 1/2, bonk 1/2/3, and devils crush...there isn’t a real justification imo ... love the tg mini but cannot wait for a mod to come out that resolves this tragedy

as an aside, the pcecd version of river city ransom would have been nice too

I ordered multiple items so they would put it in a box. It worked even thought it was just the items and no bubble wrap or air packets. But the box is pretty good condition overall, so I am happy.
