Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread Nine

Status
Not open for further replies.
First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops or which ones you've grabbed to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Furthermore, I would like to thank our Wiki editors HeatDolphin and Rocko for updating the Wiki. Great job.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinavere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Picked up Burnout Paradise guide at BB. I was surprised they even had a 1 cent shelf tag for it, and even more surprised that a lone copy was still there after being on clearance for so long.

I picked up the Okami Wii guide from GS during lunch today, the guy was nice enough to get it from the back for me. I felt bad, so I bought the DoubleJump ManaKhemia guide for $9.99...I think it retails for $19.99.
He gives me this dribble that he can't sell the guides and that they have to dump them. This was the same fuck face that when asked if they can call another store for an item, he gives me the number and makes me call. However, he lets me go JUST this once and gives me a copy of Okami and the Hulk.

BTW, if anyone is interested, the store with the douchebag denying me the guides is the Sunnyvale, CA store. If any of you are reading, fuck you guys. You have the worst customer service in the world. Makes me wanna go back, get your damn name and report to corporate.

Enough ranting. Get those guides while you can folks.

So this guy's a douchebag because he didn't sell you something he's not supposed to sell you? Make sure to bring a camera next time when you call him that to his face.

ooo, I gotta snag one of those. I don't even have the game (got bored quick with both Atelier Iris games) but I've got some strange compulsion to collect DJ books. I've only found Genji for a penny, so I pick em up at 9.99.

Wonder if any other recent DJ's have been marked down to 9.99. Too soon for that 360 werewolf game?

I wrote that out last night when I was a bit angry. I'm not too angry about it now. The only thing that bothers me is that this is the same guy who gave me poor customer service last time. I know for a fact that I won't go to that particular GS no more. However, he was so KIND to give me 2 guides so I'm kinda thankful for that.
Operation Darkness and Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis were both marked $9.99.
How long were Persona 3 and Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness $9.99 before they pennied?
From August 8th, 2008
1. Mentioned
2. Not answered.
(still curious)

I picked up an Okami and Bourne Conspiracy guide from GS this evening.

Something was up with the Mana Khemia guide I picked up though. I was fully prepared to pay $9.99 for it, but the guide would not scan. They tried all 3 bar codes on the back and got nothing. Then, they tried to manually enter the UPC numbers, and again, nothing. He ended up giving it to me for free with the other penny guides. I guess I lucked out

Got a .39 + tax copy of Burnout Paradise. Just in time, daughter and I have been wearing out the demo and just Goozexed a copy that hopefully will get here by the weekend.

Got a funny look, but not as funny as .01. Kind of wish they all were like that.
Got 2 copies of the Okami guide today. The guy also said he is making a time time exception.
Whenever I get GS employees not wanting to sell me the guides, I just offer to reserve something from them if they let me get them. They tend to bend a bit more knowing I'm going to improve their numbers for item per transaction/reserve amounts. You just have to pitch it to them as a win win situation for everyone involved.
Most importantly though is just be straight up and polite! If you threaten to never shop there again, or are just plain rude you'll not get anything. Rudeness is met with rudeness.

All the guides had been pulled by the time I got to the various locations yesterday and today. Okami Wii is really the only one I was after.

Some of the local GSes had loosened up a little during the past drops, but now they've all tightened back up again.

I was actually polite. That's probably why I was able to get 2 guides. However, I'll pitch in that reserve idea next time. Maybe I'll be able to score more. Thanks for the suggestion! :D
46 out, 1 in? Yea its about time you got something =]
Lots, I mean lots, of 100 point yard sale leftovers. Hopefully, I will be able to catch up to you on the received end.

Hmmm, could it be on the way out? I realllllly hope so.

Wow, don't know how I missed the 9.99 drops on those. Gonna have to scope out a couple stores soon then (maybe luck out w/ a free Mana Khemia hehe)
Dumb question - did the Mana Khemia bundle from Rosenqueen with the figure include the guide?
No.

Went to BB and checked the following:

OB 4.99
RB 4.99
Ao2 2pack 7.50
AC 2 pack (half off)
Phantom Hourglass 9.99
Twilight princess blue HC 14.99 (I think this used to be 7.50?)
SMG HC 14.99
ME 2 pack half off
hulk, lost odyssey, FF 12, GoW Chains: all full price

Got 2 FF12 RW and one Smackdown v Raw 2008 total out of three gamestops today. The first one didn't have any - they usually don't, no big whoop. Second store I go to - the one I commonly refer to as "The Dick Store":
1. Refused to help me look for any games I was looking for.
2. Refused to let me use my 20% off coupon on a copy of Twin Snakes, though today was the last day said coupon was valid.
3. When I asked about the guides sitting on top of the counter (in particular, an Okami guide I wanted) - that had price tags of a penny on them stated, and I directly quote:
"You can't have them. I'm throwing them out."

Store three, my store of choice, the three guides are sitting onthe counter waiting for me, along with a Disgaea soundtrack among messages of "welcome back, how've you been since the move, etc". I told them about the dick at store two, and they actually got angrier than I was about it - stating that the guides are still in the system, and are still sellable at one cent until they are fully removed. I may be in store 2's area again tomorrow, so if thats the case I'll be pressing them a bit then.

slowdive: I don't think Twilight Princess has a blue hc, but Phantom Hourglass does. I swung by BB yesterday, and the Tan Twilight Princess hc was $8, while the blue Phantom Hourglass hc was like $15.

Id pick it up for 8.
Id pick it up for 8.
Yeah, I probably should have bought it. But I figure if it has been there this long, it'll probably last another drop.

Well I decided I'd go hunting for "penny game guides" today as well as hitting up some other stores for deals and such.

First stop: Target
Nothing of interest (waiting for Skate. and Grid to drop price)

Second stop: GameCrazy
Now I understand that a lot of people get a lot of crap from GameCrazy staff, and I was sure I was going to have to deal with their crap today. It was my first time ever hitting up a GameCrazy so I figured I'd push my luck. I ended up seeing a shit-ton of Nintendo Power Game Guides. I grabbed the one I really wanted "New Super Mario Bros." and went up to the Cashier.

Me:"Can I have this price checked"
*Cashier logs into the computer and scans the guide
Cashier:"Agh this things broken"
*Cashier calls over a manager-type
*Manager-guy logs in and scans the guide
Manager-guy:"HMMM...we better fix this or all the guides will ring up like this."
Me:"Is it ringing up at a penny?.. a friend told me that this would ring up at a penny here."
Manager-guy:"yeah... tell you what you can just have it"
Me:"Do you mind if I look for any other game guides that might ring up at a penny."
Manager-guy:"Sure I don't think you'll find anything else over there"
*HAHAHAHAHAHA I think to myself
*I grab all the Nintendo Power guides as well as some older guides I think will penny out
Me:"Here ya go, I figured I check out some of these older guides you guys have:
*Manager-guy scans away and my pile gets bigger and bigger
Cashier:"What are you gonna do with all these guides?"
Me:"I actually have most of these games, I'll use them"
*Manager-guy finishes up my penny guide pile
Manager-guy:"You scored pretty big here"
Me:"Yeah, have a good day"
*I walked off into the sunset with a stack of Nintendo Power Game Guides (it was actually noon, but for effect y'know)

Another drop today at GameStop, but it's not quite what you think. The PRIMA: Video Game Careers book dropped to a penny today. I know a lot of stores got one shipment of those last holiday season. Mine had 3 left. Good luck!

Wow. I thought I used to make alot of stops in one trip, but to me as long as all of those stores were in the same general area it would've been a no brainer to stop at EVERY store.

By the way, at the Gamestop with NO guides, did you ask them if they're in the back? I ask because a couple of my local GS stores stopped keeping massive racks of guides out front after a while.

Also, how big is that Mercs 2 guide you got? I ask because I picked up the game and I'd like to see how they did some of the stuff, if it really covers that kind of stuff.

If you get a chance, crack open that EA book, though if you know the history of the company already, you'll be quite disappointed when you realize it's just them tooting their own horn about how they've become a megalith of gaming companies and spouting off their sales numbers.

My one friend who I used to hit ALOT of stores with for guides and games had a big tote full of guides in the back of her car for about a year after we stopped grabbing them. I will say one thing though, even with the heavy tote in the trunk, she got great gas mileage with that car and she never got stuck in the snow once with it.

In Regards to Gamestop not having guides, I thought about asking, but I was pressed for time and my wife wanted me home when she got back from work. If I ever go there again, or any other Gamestop for that matter I will inquire about guides in the back room. Depends what kinda mood I'm in.

The Mercenaries 2 guide must have been a pre-order bundle thingy
35 page book about the size of magazine w/ a pull-out poster and a code for unlockable outfits in the game.
Contents are as follows:
-South America Goes Boom "How to blow up a city in Venezuela -Mercenary Style" page 4
-Vehicle Trends "The Best Rides in Venezuela" page 6
-You do the Math page 7
In Regards to Gamestop not having guides, I thought about asking, but I was pressed for time and my wife wanted me home when she got back from work. If I ever go there again, or any other Gamestop for that matter I will inquire about guides in the back room. Depends what kinda mood I'm in.

The Mercenaries 2 guide must have been a pre-order bundle thingy

That book sounds like a mini guide of sorts. I don't suppose they had any extras at that Circuit City? I'd pay a few bucks shipped for one, at least enough to cover postage and the envelope to put it into.

Yeah it is a sort of mini-guide, I woulda grabbed more if they had more.

Damn. I was hoping they would've had more, since I think my local CC has become really good at throwing out stuff that should be thrown out WHEN it should be tossed out ever since I cleaned them out of the 12 or so pennied guides they had in stock.
Walked into Gamestop and asked if they had the Okami guide.
The dude grabbed 3 and handed them to me without saying anything.
That's what I call well-trained!

No penny price tags printed out today, so I would say oting dropped.

But I did notice our Halo 3 guides went up from 9.99 to 10.00 if that makes any sense.... and it does have a C on the tag, so it may be dropping soon.
