I've bought Steam wallet cards before and it was a mistake. You can almost always find games for cheaper than what Steam sells them for, from other sites and sources, such as Amazon, GMG, other CAG sellers, or eBay. I still have my Steam card credit sitting in my wallet from months ago.

The difference with the PS3 is that PlayStation has a rabid fanbase (many carried over from the wildly successful PS2). Also, despite the fact that PS3 had massive failures in its first few years, it still managed to outsell the 360 every year. The same can't be said for the Xbone.
