Thumb pad works much better, I'm a PC FPS fan too and tried Metroid in my friend's DS, play with thumb pad is an amazing experience for FPS fans. I heard somewhere that the wrist strap is like scratching the surface of the DS Lite's case, I don't know if Nintendo is developing one with another...
