CAGiversary!
Feedback

07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides#Strategy_Guides

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

CRAP!!!! And I passed up copies of the Delta Force Black Hawk Down one for weeks now.

I already got my fill of copies of the The Warriors from Best Buys drops a couple months ago.

I found a TRU yesterday that had about 10 copies of the NBA Street V2(or was it V3?) guide still in stock, but sadly as soon as it rang up .01(and I got my copy), a manager told the clerk who rang me out to pull the remaining copies.

Also snagged a copy of the Cold Winter guide from an EB(which also had 2-4 copies of the DF:BHD guide in stock.

Has anyone else had the problem I've had lately, where their local EB/GS stores seem to be keeping the guides in the back stock room anymore, save for the newest ones?

I stopped in Stroudsburg to try and get another copy each of Killzone,Punisher and a couple others, to no avail, as supposedly some 'district manager' came through and tossed all the pennied guides.

I'm still hoping to find that one TRU that forgot to clean out all their copies of the PS2 San Andreas guide, as I want a 'spare'. LOL

Why don't you go on a road trip to Iowa - i bet youll find one on the way.

By the way... anyone been checking Best Buy to see if anything has pennied? It's also been a while since TRU pennied anything out. I think they're way overdue on that (unless we missed a round of drops).

I haven't gotten a penny guide in over two months :whistle2:(

But I did score some nice guides at Half Price books today:

All of these were in clearance for $3 each (but I get 10% off)
Res Evil 3 (Prima PS1)
Legend Dragoon
Breath of Fire Dragon 1/4
Rayman 3 (why did I buy this?)

And for $4.98 in the regular section . . . Chrono Cross

Then I stopped at Mega Media Exchange and found Jak and Daxter guide (for the first game for $5.99 . . . was for me but I see it is worth over $30 . . . so I'll likely sell it.

LOL Pook, I haven't really been checking out any TRU stores lately, as I figured most of them are great at removing the pennied guides.

Either way, my friend who I've been taking on these trips(I usually drive) is perturbed, I guess.

Not that I NEED anymore guides, but was good to add a couple more to the personal collection. I think I'm up to like 85-90 now.

i have about 126 guides all together, that is after i took out some duplicate guides and put them on ebay.

does anyone know if radiata stories guide is pennied out yet?

I think I've got you beat with my Half Price books find yesterday -- guides in good condition for Xenogears and Star Ocean: Second Story for $7.48 each! (and if that's not enough, a copy of My So Called Life on DVD for $25 after coupon that just sold on Amazon for $180...)

Probably my best trip there yet.

I'd say you obliterated my little finds . . . I need to learn the DVD market, it is completely off my screen.

not a rumor. It is just that I have no idea whats on the list. (or if they are even guides)

Don't know how many of these are new or not, but got seven penny guides at Best Buy tonight:

Call of Duty 2 (Brady)
Quake 4 -- Xbox 360 only (Prima)
Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks (Prima)
Medal of Honor Pacific Assault (Prima)
Ninja Gaiden Black (Prima)
Tony Hawk's American Wasteland (Brady)
X-Men Legends II (it's down stairs, so not sure)

Me neither =D My Best Buy used to have their guids all over the place so I could never check them easily, but they recently condensed the section so now it's easy to check their stock.

Picked up a copy of the guide for Myst IV: Revelations (PC) at BestBuy today for $0.01. This isn't a new drop, though -- I remember picking a copy up weeks ago.

Also another a few week (in actuality, likely months old) old drop from BB that I don't see on the list: Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 (PC).

Would have posted these sooner but I assumed that they were old enough that they were already on the master list.

pennied out starting May 25 at Toys R Us Good Luck...
Advance Wars DS
Batallion Wars
Final Fantasy I&II
Fire Emblem Path of Radiance
Fire Emblem Sacred Stones
Metroid Prime 2
Paper Mario
Pikmin 2
Pokemon Colosseum
Starfox Assault

and most of the old copies of Nintendo Power

Hmm.. I could use most of those. Unfortunately I think my TRU keeps up fairly well on the guides, but I will check it out regardless.

How anal does TRU tend to be selling penny guides?

Botticus, they're usually pretty stiff when it comes to their policy on penny guides. I know this because even when I found a guide that was pennied still on the shelves, I had a heck of a time convincing them to let me have it.

I was just lucky that I was buying a copy of Geist that day, I guess, as my other purchase kind of influenced them to 'let it slide this time'.

And at another TRU down the line, I found a STACK of the NBA Street V3 guides from the last drop. I took ONE up to buy, the clerk rang it out and THEN called a manager to ask about them. At which point the manager almost instructed him to refund my penny and take the guide back.

So yeah, they're pretty retentive about penny guides. But it never hurts to just tell them 'well, it was on the shelf'. Usually thats all I say anymore, they don't let me have it, I walk out. It's not worth the trouble.

I'm glad I have all of those (except Pikmin 2)... TRU is anal to a point about pulling the guides ASAP around here. I don't even think I've ever seen 1/2 of those guides at TRU, anyways.

Only one that's interesting to me is Pikmin 2, and I'll just trade / buy it from someone on here.

FYI, Paper Mario guide sells for a good bit of cash on Ebay for a penny guide, so just a heads up.

I think my TRU had alot of Pikimin 2's in the corner. I'll go friday morning and see what i can get. I already have most of those so they should be up for trade if i get lucky, oh and roufuss if that DQ8 for $9.99 pans out and i get a pikimin 2 guide its yours for shipping :)

Haha, thanks, I appreciate it.

I don't think I've seen most of those at my local TRU stores, except for the Fire Emblem ones. Though, I think my one TRU also has another prior drop guide, one of the Pokemon or Yugi-Oh ones.

And since when did OPM jump to $10 an issue?

Thanks for the Heads Up on the Guides at TRU I've been waiting for some of the Nintendo guides to get pennied out.
How anal does TRU tend to be selling penny guides?
Alot of stores seem to be anal about it from what I see alot of people on CAG say. I know my store is pretty cool about it although they have gotten better at pulling the guides. Last drop I got some guides and the manager saw them being rung up and just made a comment about how I beat them to the guides but was cool about it and didn't tell the cashier to not sell them or anything like that like I hear in some penny guide horror stories.

I'd say you won't know until you try (if you've never tried for penny guides at your TRU) but overall would guess that more stores are anal about it then not.

My TRU always pulls them - but i usually get there before they do so around noon of drop day(sometimes i put them with magazines so they miss them though =])

well, TRU is usually such a pain to get guides from, and there isn't really anything that interests me from that list, that I don't think I'll even bother either.

I wish we could get some news on new drops at gamestop/EB though. I've never failed at getting at least one guide at my local gamestop on each drop.

C'mon Dragon Quest 8, just in time for the 9.99 Circuit City sale...

I know a couple of these have been mentioned before, but I haven't seen others. I stopped into an EBGames today and they had the following guides for $0.99:

Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse
Yu-Gi-Oh: Nightmare Troubadour
SSX on Tour
Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe
One Piece: Grand Battle

These guides are ones that have had trouble scanning at every store I've been to. If they look it up by name, it should show it is 0.99 though. Just a heads up.

On a side note, the following guides have been added to my tradelist: Stubbs the Zombie, Nightmare Troubadour, Romancing Saga, Arc the Lad: EoD, Pariah.

Wow - it's about damn time for some of these. ^_^

Went to BB today for Tomb Raider faceplates and saw a bunch of older drops - don't know where they came from because they sure weren't around before.

Got Call of duty 2 (PC,360), Xmen Legends II, and Star Wars Ep III. Up for trade.
If the retail chains were smart, they wouldn't charge $15-20 for a fucking book. All Brady guides can be bought directly from Brady for 35-40% off, shipped for free. Retail chains make a KILLING on these books.

If they just marked them down to a decent price, I'd buy them. $10 is a perfectly acceptable starting price, and after they get old mark them down to $5 or so.

I would not have nearly the number of guides I have now if it weren't for them being pennied out, and thinking I would have paid full price for them if I didn't have any other option is ludicrous.
Actually, since they buy these guides on a returnable basis (strip the covers or field destroy after a certain period) their discount should be around 30%, which is industry standard. That means for a $15 guide, they would pay $11.50. Now if they buy them on a non-returnable basis, they get a 50% discount, which works out to $7.50 for a $15 guide. If companies were buying guides on a non-returnable basis, you'd never see a penny guide. At best, they'd probably mark them 50% off to try to sell them for cost, which is something you see at the occasional mom and pop store.
What would you consider a reasonable price for a guide, Rictor?

IMO, a 'reasonable' price would be $5. I mean, I can recall when I used to buy guides for every game I bought, in case I got stuck.

That was probably 5-10 years ago, they were $14.99 cover price then.

Now, I see them retailing for $17.99-$19.99 and then these stores wonder WHY they don't move......its kind of ridiculous.

Either way, I've reduced my 'guide addiction' to just wherever I happen to be headed(no special trips anymore) and I mainly get them for games I have already.

Mind you, my personal collection(a copy of each from my bunches of guides I have) numbers 60 + already.
Well, since I know what printing costs are, I don't think they'll get much cheaper unless they start printing them in black and white on newsprint. Go try to print your own strategy guide. You won't find a company to print it up cheap enough for you to sell it for under $30. These companies have to combine huge print runs to get big enough discounts to even make publishing guides profitable. We're seeing the same problems in the comic book industry...high printing costs are making for ridiculous cover prices ($3-5 for a comic book, compared to 50 cents for a comic book in the 80s)...but it's not the publishing companies fault it's the printers. The publishers hate the high cover prices as much as the consumers. Comics that used to sell 15 million copies a month in the 70s and early 80s are now lucky to sell 50,000 copies a month. I'm sure guides have the same lower print runs these days, especially since they also have to compete with free online guides.

If anyone finds extra Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones, Advance Wars DS, or Starfox Assault guides I'd trade for or buy them.

Thanks.

Went to TRU last nite to scope it out and nothing was there - though I don't recall seeing any of those guides there in a while anyway.
I think the drops were today?
Yep I stopped by TRU right when they opened today and they had them pulled before they even opened at my store :(

I went to the one near my place. I got FE: Sacred Stones, Advance Wars DS, Battalion Wars, and a messed up copy of FF I & II. FF was the last one. Once i bought it, the worker start taking them off the rack. i only got one of each. they had lots of AWDS, FESS, Battalion Wars. probably around 8 of each.

Later on, I went to another TRU. None of the guides that are pennied were there. I think they pulled it this morning. I want Metroid Prime 2 the most.

Hey, which ones did you visit? Just to make sure I skip those locations tonight. thx.
Why would you only get 1 of each penny guide...instead of all 8?
I don't know if you've ever actually taken 30+ penny guides up to the counter. In my experiences, I've noted that the chances of being denied (at least at ToysRus) increase dramatically the minute they see you're buying many of the same (especially if they're a penny).
Also, unless you're looking to share with other CAGs, who really wants to end up with 8 copies of an unwanted guide? You can try and dump it on ebay, but the chances of making a profit are very slim, unless it's a very rare guide.
