Mavericks will most likely remain competitive during Dirks run and anything is possible. Lakers needed a gift from god In Gasol to turn that franchise around. Celtics turned their franchise around with a gift from god in KG and Allen. It is very possible to improve the team via trades. Cuban has shown that he is more than willing to spend money on the team. Mavericks "lost" the 2006 Finals and did everything to improve the team. Some of it was stupid though. Heat "won" the 2006 finals and have completely gut their team out.
I really cant blame Dirk for staying for numerous reasons. 1. He is a god in Dallas and the franchise best player of all time. 2. Cuban will take great care of him after he retires. 3. These players have so many hanger ons and people dependent on them. That extra 4-5 million a year and 20-30 over the course of a contract means a big thing. Especially when most of them live an expensive life style that we could only dream about and have to maintain it. Combine that with the fact that a great majority of them end up broke. Scottie Pippen is the latest star to end up broke or near it. Allen Iverson is rumored to have been living paycheck to paycheck for years now. Fatso Eddy Curry owes people and creditors millions of dollars.
Trades are possible to improve the Mavs yes, but that takes money, money which may not be there. Cuban is a spender, so are a lot of GMs, like Portland's Paul Allen, but they all have limits. Also, that extra $20-$30 million over the lifetime of a contract means what? They can only buy an extra 3 lambos, 2 ferraris and 2 homes instead of 6 lambos, 4 ferraries and 4 homes? Professional athletes who become broke can go

themselves, especially the ones that DID make a lot of moeny. Even Pippen, who I loved when he was in Portland, is a complete moron. I realize it's not always solely their fault, but if they're too stupid to realize it's THEIR MONEY, and they're out there spending it like nothing and giving it to friends and family who may or may not deserve it, or out

ing bitches and becoming baby daddies where they have to pay child support to 5+ illegitimate children, I have zero sympathy.
Dirk didn't sign a max deal. He could have made 20 million more if he wanted it. He plays for an owner who always is willing to spend money and he plays for a team that is close. Roddy B is on the rise, Caron Butler has another year to gel with Dirk, and next year the Mavs have a ton of salary coming off the books.
Also the West is getting weaker. The only team who would stand in their way if they kept shit intact would be OKC, LA, and maybe Portland. Every other major team is too old or they are losing someone. I would have included SA, but I think Duncan is going to decline again this year and they look like they might just break shit up with the trading Parker talk.
And thank you wildcpac for putting win and loss in quotes. That series turned me off of the NBA for years. It still leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

ing Stu Jackson and David Stern did everything possible to rig that shit.
You're are right. I thought he signed the max, but I just read it was 4 years for $80 million. But the fact remains I think, most players don't care about titles, they want money. Gilbert Arenas is a good example of this, the Wizards/Bullets have been terrible as long as I can remember. But he didn't look for another team and took the gigantic deal that has basically

ed the franchise ever since, both financially and in terms of public relations. Joe Johnson's new deal could be another example of this. The Atlanta Hawks definitely have a larger championship window than most teams, but that money WILL get in the way if they ever wanted to re-tinker with things.
People said the West would be weaker last year, but yet again 8 teams with 50+ wins. Phoenix showed they are definitely contenders, but without Amare, it's hard to tell. OKC's window for a ring has opened much earlier than anyone could've expected. Portland's done some re-tooling and probably WILL continue to do so if the rumors I keep reading about come true (and they better goddamn get out of the first round.) The Jazz could be in the mix again, depending if Utah can find someone to replace Boozer, and the Rockets seem very serious about rebuilding. Then of course there's the Lakers.
There's a lot of teams in the West to consider. If you really think Dallas can look past the others and just focus on the Lakers and OKC, it's gonna be a looooong season. Not saying they're not a playoff team, because they are definitely are, but saying "The only team who would stand in their way...." is way, way unfounded. The ring is not Dallas' to win. It's the Lakers' to lose.
