2010 World Cup Netherlands vs Spain

truth. as long as it stays somewhat competitive the match will be enjoyable.

side note...hopefully Portugal has a good run. put 20$ on them to win it all.

Go USA!

england's keeper had a huge save in the second half. usa had a chance to steal the game away but a 1-1 tie is a good victory for them imo.

Game ends 1-1. USA had two great chances to score the second goal in the second half but didn't make it happen. First time was a ball off of the post and the second time was a breakaway with the US player getting punched in the chest/head area by the cheating British.

^I'm 34min. in and yes, christ the USA has gone downhill. Also, the person that "designed" their uniforms should be shot.

Edit: Oh wow, just saw the softttttttttttt goal.

a draw against england is pretty good all things considered. seemed like the US was pretty nonchalant for the first 80 minutes. but hey, its a great start for the round though.

Yeah, you wannabe USA "fans" keep believing that you're a strong team and know what you're talking about. lol Merry Xmas.
Such an excellent game. This proves USA is just as good as England beyond a doubt. I'm proud of our boys!
You sure you watched the same game as I did? USA is no where near England. England tied because the forwards were not on their game and because Green fucked up. USA played a terrible game. Nothing like when they beat Spain in the Confederations Cup. USA is having a lot of problems with their forwards, they just aren't on their game. England should have scored at least 3 goals. Regardless, USA will go on to the next round because the other two teams are not good teams.

Wasn't there a commercial a while back about soccer in the future and it had people jumping on giant trampolines? I can't remember. I found one with some creepy men-on-stilts that looked like horse legs. I want to say it had a companion one about basketball where the hoop moved around.

I think the USA defense needs to zone better and get faster. The strikers need to bunch up less and go after it. When they get a break, it's exhilarating. Can't wait to see another game.

US looked pretty bad to me. Defense was decent but not super strong and the offense looked bad. Whole team looks to have pretty poor first touch - especially when the ball is in the air. Offense doesn't have good vision, doesn't anticipate well and doesn't seem to create space well. They have a pretty good keeper though it appears - who saved them several times.

This was the best part of the game, and the biggest win of the day.

I blame the Elephant.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, look at yesterday's news.

Mmmmm NO! no way the US is one step close to being as good as England. This should be a 1 nil shut out but Robbie Green let in a soft goal. The only thing the US did right was shut down rooney and Tim Howard saved their butts so many times. Everton and the US are lucky to have Tim Howard. He is one of the best GKs in the world. The defense was straight up shakey tonight with Onyewu still not 100%. Altidore looked great though. He put pressure on the England D.

But again, The US was straight up lucky because Capello's side would have shored up the D and not let the US get chances to score. David James needs to come back 100% and take over for England at GK because I dunno if Green will shove this off his shoulder. Joe Hart could get the next start..but they need James back to have a shot at the cup.

The US needs their D healthy. It seems like there was miscommunication at times but now the momentum is on their side. They should be able to make it to the next rounds easy. I think they can make some real noise in the Knock out rounds.

yeah i heard about that.

the US can play better, and hopefully they will. the last thing we need is a loss or a draw against slovenia or algeria. but i think they will get their act together. the team has a few new faces, its not the same group that got to the finals of the confederation (well it is largely). but if we can play a little better and howard plays as well as he did today then we should move on.

yeah looks like the ankles fine. his chance in the 2nd half was real slick, the english should be more happy with the goalpost than green after todays match.

US Needs to play way better defense.... Just aweful today... They didn't mark up well... Howard looked really good though... USA can't ride Howard coat tails for too long though...

I'll take the tie though. I wonder if England will post E.A.S.Y in their papers again

i don't think it was ever an issue whether England's group was easy (which it is). The papers will be all over Green fucking up. It kinda reminded me of David Seaman's mess up several years ago in the EPL. Although that wasn't his fault, it was the pitch whereas Green screwed up something that any kid who just starts out as a soccer goalie learns from the beginning: Get your body behind the ball, not just your hands.
I'm looking forward to the rest of the games in the group. It should be fair sailing for USA and England, but keep in mind there haven't been any major upsets yet.

That was an excellent result for the US team since the 2 teams they really have to worry about beating are Slovenia and Algeria. Tim Howard was playing like a world class keeper all game long, easily man of the match.

So now that we can all agree that USA is at least as good as England (probably better), what steps do you think England will take to plan to specifically combat the USA in future matches now that we're such a large threat?

Throwing more punches when the U.S. has breakaways.
Well I DVRed the game but my dumbass friend fucking ruined it for me.
So it's his fault that you expect a live sporting event to not be "spoiled" to you?

The Algeria was definitely wide open on that pass. He even got his arm on the ball :S

That game was HORRIBLE. The fact that it didn't end in a tie only makes it worse.

Wow, Slovenia's win puts them on top of the group! That puts them in good position to continue to the final 16.
What's up with the chihuahua on the right shoulder of the Algeria jersey? A Taco Bell ad?

Had to google the answer for myself... it's a ferrec, the desert fox. :whistle2:#

Slovenia is at the top right now. but they'll likely lose their next 2. I wouldn't say their chances of moving on are good despite the win today.

Can we say that Ghana's game will most likely stand as the most exciting finish for first round play at this year's World Cup? I was chewing my nails, that's how tense it was.

The USA didn't play that poorly, and the defense was rock solid. When you can pretty much shut down one of the best forwards in the world (Wayne Rooney) then you've done a great job as a defense. Granted, they had the lapse in the first few minutes (Ricardo Clark feel asleep on that one), but they played well overall.

The reason they looked as if they were doing poorly is because they wanted to play defensively. Landon Donovan spent more time defending than attacking. It's just not possible to try and attack that hard against the English with someone like Ashley Cole manning the flanks.

The USA needs to come out much more offensively minded against Slovenia since they are now at the top of their group.

Yea, the USA game was pretty good from what I saw. They only had a lapse at the start of the game when apparently they forgot how to mark.

Tim Howard is the shit and was completely solid in the game even after he got kicked in the chest. Now to watch Germany.

for now....i mean half of the teams in the WC haven't even played yet, let alone have a close finish. There'll be better games in group play than the ones we've seen so far. (i pray). The knock out stages at least is where the real excitement begins.
This German squad is the truth. I hope the second half is even better than the first!
Can't argue that, the Germans are amazing on the attack. Australia can't do much and Cacau delivered fast!

I stand by the USA defense looking bad.... They honestly didn't mark at all that well... Howard was the savior... If they didn't have him and I could see England scoring 3-4 goals easily...

germany really had it together.
Now I finally get to cheer for my team though (The Netherlands). I really hope for a great display of offensive football tomorrow.

I think I've been spoiled by the German game from yesterday. The Netherlands game felt slow as hell, though it finally picked up in the last 15 minutes or so. They were definitely not on their A game, but it ended up working out for them anyways.

thank goodness i got espn3 to work. now i can slack off even more today. only caught the last 15 minutes or so of the japan cameroon match, but it was a good 15 minutes. cameroon had their chances. couple big stops at the end there.
