2010 World Cup Netherlands vs Spain

Uruguay seems to be a potential threat for the later games in the tournament. Although there are probably a couple of teams that look better than them, I still wouldn't want to play them.

Mexico isn't half bad, either.
France. What the fuck happened this year? Seriously.
none of this

Well, looks like France mucked everything up as usual. If they're gonna go out there and play terrible then they should go all the way and let South Africa curb stomp them. It would have added awesome drama to see the host nation qualify. Way to go France!

Yeah I remember the Zidane headbutt... I was rooting for France but that sorta ticked me off that he did that. Still think Ribery is a great player - and for the most part - a pretty stand up, fair player - unlike the "rush of blood to the head" move there by Zidane.

We'll probably never know for sure, but I still think he most likely had it coming. :D

Then again, Zidane was one of my favorite players of all time, so I'm inclined to see his side of it.

haha - I have no doubt he had it coming for sure! And Zidane was great that cup - one of the reasons I was rooting for France - just hated to see him do that.

I remember that they were going at it back and forth and talking shit about each other moms or what...So Matarazzi obviously hit the right nerve to cause that to happen.

France has to be the most disappointing team ever in recent years. They were disappointing through qualifiers and just lucked out of a dominating Ireland to even make it in the show. Hope Laurent Blanc takes over for that Douchebag Raymond Domenech. he could never once get his players to play like a team.

Hijacking Ramstoria's post with an update because I am equally bored. I drew up the best scenarios for each team to guarantee themselves a spot in the knockout stages. Denmark has the distinction of having the most control of their own destiny since they must win or go home. On the other hand, Groups C and F are dogfights and have the best chances of coming down to goal scoring tiebreakers.

Number 2 there is a bit off.

If the US wins they have 5 points. England wins they have 5 points, and Slovenia has only 4. So US and England both move on. Tie breakers just determine who's first and who's second in the group.

So win and the US is in regardless of what happens with England-SLV. They don't have to worry about tie breakers in that case. Only if they tie--then England either has to lose, or draw and not make up the total goals tie breaker for the US to move on.
players playing for different countries happens a ton. Look at today's portugal game. Liedson and Deco are both Brazillian. I think it a matter of playing time and being able to play in the World Cup. Liedson and Deco are not good enough to be on Brazil but can be good enough to play on Portugal and see playing time.

even look at the German squad, Cacau is Brazillian, Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski both come from Polish provinces.

so besides playing time...i have no clue either to why players choose to represent a specific country.
You basically only have to be a citizen of a country to play for them. Whether that is a naturalized citizen (simply living there for many years) being born there, having dual papers for different countries ETC.

As long as you are a citizen you can play. Many of the over seas players have lived and played in different countries so they can have a couple different teams they could play for.

Hell some of the US players could go play for there home country if they wanted.

Holy shit, this group is more exciting then what I could have guessed.

I am kinda glad that Rooney is playing poory because I hate him. But is game is fun to watch so I hope he brings his play up to par.
I hate that U.S. and England are playing at the same time.
The last games in every group are always played simultaneously so that the outcomes of the other game are not known to the participants. There's a reason for this. I believe it was 1978 when Brazil had played before Argentina and had a 5 goal differential, and then Peru (who were playing Argentina) allowed them to score 4 goals in the second half to win 6-0. The Peruvian goalkeeper was born in Argentina. IIRC, something similar happened in 1982 as well which is why we have that rule.

Edit: Here's a good blog entry I found explaining it: http://community.foxsports.com/difi..._last_group_matches_are_played_simultaneously

US robbed of another goal. It might have been offsides (I don't think so), but they were fouled TWICE on the drive, once inside the penalty box when Bradley was basically upended by a slide tackle.

Edit: Clearly not offsides on the replay. Jobbed.

God damn, I have seen a team get robbed so much. For the love of god can we just score a clean goal?

My heart cant take much more of this.

England scored so they have to win this.

U.S. has scored a ton of clean goals. It's the blind refs who keep fucking them over.

Oh I know, what I mean is why can someone just strike it from outside the box for a goal that cant be reviewed.

OMG!!!!!! fuckING PLACEMENT OVER POWER YOU IDIOT!!!!!

Placement, placement. I coach my middle school kids placement.....

ALTIDORE SUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

Wide open Net and he kicks the ball 100 feet in the air.

If one of my kids did that I would bench him for the remaining half. I have done this many times because there is no reason to miss such a goal. I always tell them you dont get extra points for how hard the ball hits the back of the net.

Pfft Josey is playing like shit.

The USA are wasting chances. That quick free kick was another example. The back line is playing horrid though. They really need to tighten it up.

Josey is really pissing me off.

Awful half. Screwed by the ref, Altidore fucks up a sure goal, Dempsey missed another close one early on, and got very lucky with the Algeria shot early that hit the bar.

Offense we're playing better and getting chances--but moot if we can't capitalize. Defense has been awful allow way to many counter attacks.

Give him the benifit of the doubt he could have still missed it. I have seen it happen many times.

The problem is the fact that he tried to kill it. A smarter vet would have know all he had to do is tap it in. He just wanted to be Joe Cool with a power shot. Thats the problem.

1982 had West Germany vs Austria in the last game. Algeria had already won against West Germany. Germany took a 1-0 lead and both Germany/Austria would qualify. So they spent the rest of the game kicking the ball around. It was collusion. A Germany fan even burned his flat out of hatred for his country's performance.

Dempsey misses a pretty easy goal off the bar and then misses a pretty easy rebound. We can blame the refs for the unallowed goal but not for these boneheaded misses.

Whoa calm down guys. Clint didnt blow that...it was a good shot that was just unlucky. Hell Clint is the only one here playing well.

My question is...and it might be the coach in me.....why is clint crashing his own missed shot? Where the fuck is everyone else on that rebound? Josey? Donavan? Gomez? Do you guys plan on helping or just standing outside the box?

If someone else was on that ball it would have been a easy goal....but clint and to shoot from a ackward angle because no one else was there.
He at least can't be blamed, since he came off. ;)
Did he go off at half? Who replaced him and why?

Gomez was playing pretty decent...not great but decent. Take out Josey who has done nothing in this game so far.

Feilhaber replaced him.

This match is why I love soccer of all other sports. Other than getting robbed by the refs look at how exciting this is. I am never this excited over the NBA, NFL, etc etc.

Americans who just hate soccer without ever actually giving it a chance are really fooling themsevles. There is a reason why its the most popular sport in the world by a couple billion people.
