Nice! Madson sucked as a closer. Every game I watched it seemed like at least two people would get on base against him.
Phillies get Papelbon for 4yrs/50 million.
Also includes a vesting option that can bring the contract up to $60 million. Way, WAY too much money. Wonder how this is going to impact Philly's negotiations with Rollins.

the way i look at it, unless he takes a home town discount than he isnt worth the money. He has been really sub par offensively and has become injury prone.

And Kershaw runs away with the Cy Young. I thought it would be close but Halladay would pull it out.
The most compelling subplot of Kershaw's season, arguably, was his four starts against San Francisco Giants ace Tim Lincecum, a former two-time Cy Young Award winner and a pitcher who, as a college junior, was drafted three spots lower lower than Kershaw in the first round in 2006. Kershaw was a high school senior when he was drafted.

Kershaw won all four showdowns against Lincecum, by scores of 2-1, 1-0, 2-1 and 2-1, the first of those victories coming in Kershaw's first career Opening Day start. Kershaw allowed a total of one earned run across those starts, giving up 16 hits in 30 1/3 innings while striking out 36 and walking five.
heh
So I guess Houston to the AL West is official, starting in 2013.
I'm glad they're finally getting another team in this division.

Wait, WTF? Lol so now Texas will compete with themselves for the AL West? Doesn't this constitute as a conflict of interest somehow?

I don't know why you'd say that. There are 2 NL teams in southern california and also 2 AL teams in california.

Eh touche. Guess I never really thought about it until now heh.
They probably should have shifted Arizona or Colorado to the AL West, then shifted Houston to the NL West.
That would have been more ideal.

But eh.. I'll learn to live with it.

And here I thought Kemp was a lock for MVP. Missed the triple crown and the 40-40 club by a hair. Grats to Braun.

I'm pretty shocked. I didn't think it was even close. I would have put the over/under on Kemp's 1st place votes at 18.

Braun got 20 1st place votes, Kemp got 10, Fielder got 1 (lulz). Doesn't say who got the last one.

edit: Upton got the last one.

Kemp and Ellsbury got thoroughly boned this year. I don't care that neither of their teams made the playoffs, they were the best players in each league.
Bobby V. Mmmmmmk.
I'm okay with it. The other choices didn't really inspire me either, and at the very least the Valentine administration should be entertaining.

You think he's an upgrade? It seems things were out of hand in the dugout, but Valentine isn't exactly the kind of blue chip coach I expected to see in Boston.

Over Francona? Obviously not. Francona is probably the best manager the Red Sox have ever had, so anyone coming in here was going to have huge shoes to fill. My preference, even after September, would have been for both Francona and Epstein to stay here forever. But that's not how things played out.

Valentine certainly wouldn't have been my first choice, but given how things went down last season I think he's a better choice than another laid back guy like Gene Lamont.

As for a blue chip coach, I didn't really see anybody like that as available, so I'm not sure what else they could have done. Guys I'd love to have like Joe Maddon or John Farrell, they'd never have been able to pry away from division rivals.
Who the fuck is Mi... oh. Right.

Really happy to see Bobby get another shot in the majors. Not sure if he was the best coach for the Red Sox, but he is the right guy to turn around a potential sinking ship.
Miami has now signed Jose Reyes :)
South Beach can have him for 6 years 110 million. Hey all the Marlins have to hope for is that Jose Reyes can stay off the DL multiple times during the season. What is really funny is that they really just outbid themselves for him by a year and 25 million. The Mets reported losses of 70 million in revenue last year so there was no way they could sign him even for 90 million. Hey it looks great on paper but they still have ZERO pitching behind Josh Johnson...and who knows if he can make it through the whole season.

Anibal Sanchez is solid, and if Javier Vazquez comes back he's pretty good too. Reyes, HanRam, Stanton, Morrison, and Sanchez should make up a pretty solid top half of the lineup. Reyes could have pretty average seasons and still fulfill the contract. Even in 2010, he was slightly above average offensively, and he was nearly worth this contract based on that year alone. He'll probably end up being a bargain.

Kind of wondering why they traded for Heath Bell though. Cishek looks to be decent enough for a closer, and he's younger, cheaper, and under team control for a few years.

Surprised so many Met fans are pissed about losing Reyes. He hasn't played 150 games in a season since 2008, and he was a big part of those September/October collapses, with some very pedestrian numbers during stretch runs. Besides, that core of Wright, Beltran, and Reyes wasn't able to take the Mets anywhere. It was time for that thing to be broken up, and the Mets still have the best of the trio, in my opinion.

The Marlins offered Pujols 10 years, ha. I hope they're having fun overpaying players to get that new stadium full for the first month.

Pujols is 31. Do they really think he is going to be productive for more than 5 years? Prince Fielder is going to be a better signing.

If I were the Cubs, I would offer Fielder 6 years and $140 million. He will be 33 when his contract expires and can still get another huge contract.

no doubt its going to be a offensive power house. Yeah but he is the only solid guy they have. Nolasco and the rest were very subpar or even just outright terrible. They need to shore up pitching still to have a chance to compete with the Phillies and Braves for the NL East.

I thought Cishek was great for the them. I guess Ozzie doesnt trust him with the ball or Loria just went over everyone's head and signed him. Its a pity too that he will have to be stuck as a 8th inning guy. Could have used that money to lure Beurhle or Wilson.
Surprised so many Met fans are pissed about losing Reyes. To the average Met fan...yeah i was not surprised to hear the reaction. I think its more toward the fact that he stayed in the East. If he went to the Tigers or Giants, than its a "hope he does well there"...but now we have to see him pound us consistent basis and wearing a rival team's jersey would not sit well with any fan.

I am pissed because the Mets should have dealt him at the deadline. the compensation would have been light years better than a 3rd round pick in next year's draft. I really think it was the wilpons wanting something to draw the fans to the stadium which was the batting title race. Its another reason why i want the Wilpons out as owners.

At least Alderson is trying to do something. Today he:

Signed Frank Francisco to a 2 year 12 million deal-whatever needed a close, thought they overpaid and i know he isnt the right guy. Just let Parnell or someone else. We arent contending so work our younger talent in that role.

Signed John Rauch- Eh, aging reliever to fill a bullpen spot.

Traded Pagan for Ramon Ramirez and Andres Torres- Finally a deal I like. Pagan and Torres are a wash. Torres is older but he is more patient hitter than Pagan and can play the field better than Pagan. Ramirez i hope will fill the closer spot or be a shut down 8th guy. Just hope he can repeat what he did for the Giants last year.

Wow...is it time for another spending spree followed by an immediate fire sale already? I guess 2003 was quite a while ago.

As someone who has watched Torres play the last couple of years, I hope he has a bounce back year for you guys, he couldn't hit a breaking ball fo the life of his this last season, he'd swing at things that'd hit the dirt 2 feet in front of the plate.

Looking at Angel Pagan's line, him and Torres seem like almost the exact same player with Pagan having more steals, I really don't like this trade for the Giants. If it was Pagan for Torres, I'd be ok with it, but giving up Ramon too just seems like too much, sigh.

If the Giants don't resign Beltran their outfield is going to be Melky in LF, Pagan CF, and Schierholtz in RF which is unfortunate because that basically screws over Belt from having any playing time unless Bochy some how stops favoring the vets and lets him play over Huff at first.
Cards have offered Pujols 10 years, $220 million. I'm guessing he stays.
I can only hope so.

Depends if the Cubs make a real offer or the Angels put out an offer. Can't imagine either of those two would be able to compete with the two offers out there.

I'm more waiting for pictures of Dan Lozano looking like Scrooge McDuck with all the money being tossed around.

I'd be willing to bet Pujols will take the Cardinals offer. If he does, I'm wondering if the Marlins will get both Buerhle and Fielder.

Kind of off topic, but does anyone subscribe to ESPN Insider? If you do, is it worth it? I do only follow baseball though, if that factors into the decision. They have a deal going on now, $1.66 per month.

I had it a few years back in a bundle deal with their Magazine.

The Insider stuff was definitely nothing I'd pay for on it's own. Just some more columns, lots of features on trade rumors and college recruiting stuff.

If you're only into baseball I'd definitely say it's not worth it.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I really only wish I had Insider now and around trade deadline during the regular season. I mostly want to read into this headline that says the Phils are talking with the A's about trading Dominic Brown for Gio Gonzalez, whaaaaaaaaaaaat? The subscription does come with the print magazine, but I think I'll pass. Thanks dmaul.
Reyes hurt his hammy during the press conference it was just reported.
Sounds more like Cubs luck

Apparently, the Angels are the front-runners for signing CJ Wilson. If they pick him up, and if Morales comes back healthy, the Angels would be a real threat to take the division back from the Rangers.

For the most part, any rumors in their insider section can be found elsewhere.

If nothing else find a good sports forum where people who do have insider will post the info on the boards. :D
