2013 MLB Discussion

Astros swept Angels in Anaheim. Hilarious.

Dodger fans are going berserk over Puig. I'm interested to see how he does the second time through the league.

Rough night for the Rangers' pitching staff against Boston.  The Sox scored in every inning except the 8th, which was against a position player.  Somehow that makes the actual pitchers' performance seem even more pitiful.

Not the first time Boston has sucked against a position player pitching. :)

It's harder than it seems, I'd think. They're not used to hitting 70 mph meatballs, I don't think even BP pitchers throw that slow.

It was pretty amusing watching Mike Carp get ejected for arguing balls and strikes in a 17-5 game, probably just so he could save face after Murphy struck him out looking.

It's not like they ran out any of their better bullpen guys and Grimm was due for a terrible start. It was a bad game all around, but just an anomaly. The Rangers hadn't had a game like this all year long. It had to happen sooner or later. I'm curious to see how Ogando is tonight after coming off the DL.

Many thanks to Ron Washington for giving Dustin Pedroia an intentional walk in order to pitch to David Ortiz in a 9th inning tie.  Guess where the next pitch ended up?

Ron Washington has slowly and steadily been getting on my nerves lately. He's shown just how mediocre of a manager he really is. Kirkman needs to go. Bring up Cory Burns to hold it down until Soria is back. Thank god he is throwing off the mound in Arlington pretty soon so he could be back sooner than expected.

Also, Elvis Andrus needs to stop leading off while Kinsler is away. Let Profar do it. Andrus is a pure groundball hitter now. And everything seems to be a weak chopper to short or second. He's going to have to really step up and develop some power if this contract is going to be worth it for him.

Not really Wash's fault regarding Kirkman. Grimm sucking wore the pen out and there are no days off for three weeks. All he had left was Ross Wolf and he wanted to save him for extras.

Hoping my Tribe can bounce back against Detroit.  Ubaldo Jimenez vs. Justin Verlander.  Should be a great game.

Wolf would have been better in that situation. Wash has said that he has faith in Kirkman and that is why he is still on the time (and that silly out of options thing) and that is why he still uses him, in some hopeless leap of faith that he would turn it around. He's not gonna turn it around, either.

You play to win. Not to save your bullpen. Especially with Oakland on fire. The last thing you want to do is fall behind Oakland this early in the season. And that was probably Wash that called for Andrus to bunt since Washington is in love with bunting in any and all situations. But Elvis has been know to bunt of his own accord so who knows.

If you draft Puig, he's going to do what he's supposed to do: Double A and Triple A late in the season. No call up at all. If your buddy drafts him: Ethier will crash into the wall in the opener and Puig will go on to win RoY, MVP, and the Triple Crown.

His future is in your hands Pony. Proceed accordingly.
Not anymore, sadly. Last draft of the year and Brown was drafted in the 18th. I baited my buddy to use his 19th pick on Puig. Ended up snatching Saltalamacchia with my 25th round pick which is fucking amazing in my opinion.
Couldn't have done it without you, Pony.

I really wish I could find those posts where we debated Ike Davis and a few of the young 1Bs vs. Adrian Gonzalez.

Well this is awkward...

Edit:  I clearly put some kind of voodoo hex on this game, since the Sox haven't scored since and have since coughed up the entire lead.  I wonder what the record is for most runs scored without an out followed by being shutout the rest of the way?  6 has to be close.

Ha. I saw the score and thought of your snark, bv.

Speaking of, god damn the Dodgers can't put together a streak. Just when I get even the tiniest bit mouthy, they fall apart. God damnit.

Hosmer will out perform Gonzo for the remainder of the season. League will adopt to Puig and he will be the next Shelley Duncan. You heard it here first!

My CAG fantasy team went from last to second place. Tulo is a monster, but Moore and Verlander need to get their shit together.

Colletti ready dug himself into a hole for having all 3 outfields on monster contracts. Crawford and Kemp are un trade-able, Either just sucks. Maybe the Mets will take on Either is Dodgers cover 2/3 of his contract.

The baseball gods saw fit to punish me with staying up to watch a 5.5 hour game.
The funny thing is, the Orioles/Angels game had a 2.5 hour delay and finished BEFORE the Red Sox/Rays game.

Speaking of which, I don't think I have ever seen Camden Yards that flooded. Markakis needed a life raft to navigate right field.

Does anyone else find that on the Xbox MLB.tv app, you get frequent little hiccups in playback? I have FiOS so I don't think it's my internet. speedtest.net comes back good (15 down, 6 up). It's kind of annoying. Then if I try to watch on PS3 MLB.tv app, I don't get the constant little hiccups, but every once in a while it actually comes to a full stop for a second, then starts again. It might do that 3 or 4 times and then it's fine for a good while, then it might do it again. Or not. That is less annoying, actually, so I've been watching it on the PS3. But on my iPad I don't see anything like that at all, so you'd think that it should work better on Xbox and PS3. I'm curious if others see the same issue. And I definitely do not have this kind of issue with Netflix or Amazon Prime Video, so that right there says it can't be my internet.

Do the Dodgers and Diamondbacks have a prior history, or was Ian Kennedy just being a jackass?
Just a jackass. You probably shouldn't be throwing high and inside if you can't control it. And even then, when the opposing pitcher throws an offspeed 'tween the shoulder blades professional retaliation because you hit a guy in the head, you probably shouldn't respond by hitting the pitcher in the head.

w.t. f. His ass needs to be suspended for a nontrivial amount of time.

Great win by the Orioles. Jones hitting the 3-run HR was especially sweet after he failed with the bases loaded the inning before.

I think at this point I'd be surprised if the AL East went to someone other than the Sox or Orioles, and I think those two will battle until the end.

Obviously you can't count out the Yankees or Rays entirely, but this far into the season they both look like much more flawed teams.

At some point the Rangers have to find a way to hit with runners in scoring position. This month has been terrible for their offense. They are going to have to get a bat at the deadline. Their games have been hard to watch this month. If someone scores three runs on them, I have been turning off the game because of how dreadful the offense has been.

Oh, and Feliz, Soria, Ogando, Harrison, and Lewis need to get healthy sooner rather than later. Ogando needs to go back in the pen too. He doesn't have the durability to stand up as a starter.

I'm not sure who they can get that will help them hit with RISP. CarGo would be nice, but with the Rockies playing well and Tulo on the shelf, I doubt they move him. Stanton would be the likely option, but they'd want Profar and that is a no-go.

All that is left is people like Willingham and Logan Morrison that would be minimal upgrades. Plain and simple, they are going to have to start hitting. Andrus is terrible right now and showing no signs of coming out of his funk. He is second to Aoki in ground balls but at least Aoki hits his with conviction. 70% of Andrus ABs end with a weak chopper to SS or 2B. Murphy is awful and needs to not be in the line up and LHP, but with Baker on the DL, that pretty much pencils in Murphy against all pitchers, which is just awful.

People complain about Berkman not hitting, but at least he is getting on base, which is a lot more than other people are doing. Only Beltre has a WAR of over 2 on offense. That is not good. And now the pitching is faltering. It was only a matter of time before Grimm and Tepesch started getting hit. I think Martin Perez needs to take his spot in the rotation. He has been dominating triple A so the time is now and I would be shocked if he does not start when they go to New York.

And not to mention Ron Washington playing musical chairs with the line-up. Profar needs to be leading off, Berkman second and Andrus needs to be in the 8 or 9 hole, but this is Washington, so no changes will be made.

But the Math and Science will show that it cannot continue and that Oakland cannot continue at their current torrid pace, so all it takes no is a little patience for Andrus and/or Murphy to get better and Moreland to come back.

Apparently, if all goes as planned, A-Rod will rejoin the Yankees shortly after the All-Star break. Yay?

Also, I have come to highly dislike Jose Bautista.

As a Yankee fan, this season has been hard to even pay attention to. I feel like the organization is so out of whack. They were playing better with no names than they were when Teixeira, Youkilis, etc. came back. For as much credit as the Yankees scouts got in the 90s, they have to be some of the worst scouts in the league now. It's like they're terrified of ever letting a younger player have a chance. It's a miracle that Robinson Cano ever broke through. In all honesty, I think Vernon Wells and Lyle Overbay were decent pickups...but when the only thing you know how to do is throw money at a "past his prime" player, you're just never going to get very far.

Now, as these other veterans start coming back, I don't know what the hell to expect...well, other than complacency. I expect nothing out of A-Rod. He'll miss half the season and still be among the league leaders in strikeouts, lol. And as much trouble as Jeter is having with his rehab, I think it derails any renaissance he was having. And forget chemistry and fundamental baseball. It's going to be 9 guys swinging for the fences every at bat. As much as I loved the "glory days", in a way, I'm ready to see Rivera, Jeter, and Pettitte retire (disgusting to think that A-Rod will likely still be trying to hang on), so this team can hit the reset button. They'll be lucky if Cano is even still a productive player by the time they get this team straightened out.

does andy pettitte need money, or in financial debt? LOl. It seems like every few years he says he will retire, then comes spring training. He suddenly decides he wants to pitch again. I reminds me of Brett Favre. He should just hang it up. Derek Jeter is probably done too. I think he should just sit out this year, and come back next year, then play out the remaining years of his contract.

I'm pretty happy with the Braves right now. It'd be nice if Heyward or BJ would start hitting consistently, and I still think Schafer needs more playing time, but otherwise it's been a good year so far.

I could be happier with the Rangers if they were more healthy, but I am respecting how they are now, managing to win games against teams that are good (Oakland, St. Louis). I can only hope that trend continues in New York and when they return home against the Reds.

I suddenly love the Orioles a lot more. Has nothing to do with Crush Davis being Crush Davis. Yea...

Also love them more when Gary Thorne is announcing. His normal commentary is great, his tangents are fun, and he has perfected exactly when to go completely nuts.

Cashman said that A-Rod needs to shut the fuck up. I love how done he is with that clown.
LMAO...holy crap! I thought you were paraphrasing. This is like the most bitter and toxic marriage ever at this point. If the Yankees get A-Rod to off himself, does it void the contract? lol
