2013 MLB Discussion

Perez slaying those aces.

I'm curious to see King Felix's stats against teams not named The Texas Rangers. They will have beaten him 4 times this year after today.

Cardinals also acquired John Axford and the Indians acquired Jason Kubel.

In Ranger news, Neftali Feliz is on his way to Oakland so he can join the team starting Monday.

The Phillies officially sign Miguel Gonzalez to a 3 year $12 mil deal.  I'm good with this.  Low risk and our other starting pitchers are so-so behind Lee and Hamels.  Much better than the 6 year $48 mil they were going to sign him to.

I hope Blackley pitches well so that Ogando heads straight to the pen. If those two are right, they could be fantastic additions to an already strong pen.

Yeah, I see Ogando heading back to the bullpen. Blackley has been solid and Tepesh will be back with the team on Monday, too.

Great game by the A's to get back in 1st in the division with the rangers. I will say though that Balfour makes me nervous every time he pitches now with his recent outings.

Great win for the Red Sox last night.  It shows why I'm not especially worried about a repeat of 2011.  The 2011 Sox would have lost that game after the bullpen blowing a big lead and then proceeded to lose 5 or 6 straight.  This team just rallied and tied it off Mariano and won it in the 10th.

The Rangers are clearly playing for a wild card spot. They aren't pitching well, hitting well or defending well and they're all smiling and shit and being carefree on and off the field. That's not the attitude you should be in when you're not in the lead of the division. Shit needs to turn around or they will be hosting Tampa Bay in the wild card game.

A couple of oddities popped up in yesterday's Yanks/O's game...

1) In the second inning, Chris Stewart swung and missed on a 1-1 pitch...and then walked back to the dugout. Stewart later said he thought the umpire had called the first pitch a strike. You'd think the last person this would happen to would be a catcher...

2) Mariano Rivera pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th with a 1-run lead...and got the win. David Robertson had blown a 3-run lead in the 8th, and the official scorer used the "brief and ineffective" rule in order to deny Robertson the win he technically was entitled to.

1.1 bad innings versus 209.1 innings of some of the greatest pitching of all time. Not a rational argument.

He was ineffective for all of 2011 after the trade to Texas. It was not 1.1 bad innings. He was straight up garbage in Texas in 2011.

He was a quality arm in 2012, but 2011 soured me on him.

And the Rangers need to get their shit together.

Nice MLB debut for David Hale with the Braves. 9 Ks in five scoreless innings. It's just too bad the bullpen blew it for him.

And holy shit, the Rangers are totally collapsing. With the way they're sucking, they're going to be lucky to even be the visiting team in the Wild Card game.

The Rangers are done. The entire coaching staff, with the exception of Mike Maddux, needs to be fired, that includes Ron Washington. Mitch Moreland needs to be launched into the sun. He's been a colossal waste of time. I'm finding it odd that of all the first base prospects over the past 5-10 years, that Mitch Moreland is the one given time the most time and opportunities to start.

Now, I know that they aren't officially done, but barring a huge baseball miracle, they're done. The offense can't hit w/RISP to save their lives. And if the starters don't pitch a CGSO, they don't have a chance. They're losing these games before they even begin.

The Rays offense would like to speak with you. They are 0-15 and 2-25 with the bases loaded. How this team is even in the race is beyond me

The Rays have a much higher OBP and are slugging higher than the Rangers. If someone gets on second the inning is over for the Rangers .

And I dont put all the blame on Wash. Daniels has grabbed duds at the deadline two years in a row. He also did not replace the production lost in the offseason.

He managed to provide a decent team without selling the farm (which no manager should ever do). Let's not drink the Galloway Kool-Aid and put this blame on JD. He acquired the best pitcher on the market and that said pitcher has performed terribly. You can't pin that performance on JD. And the only negative for that trade is losing C.J. Edwards. Mike Olt means nothing now. His struggles continued once he went to Chicago.

And he acquired the best right handed hitter on the market. This team would have been in the gutter long ago without Rios, who they have for next year, mind you. Wash hasn't rested players that needed it (Kinsler, namely), nor has he managed the bullpen correctly in  multiple games that led to losses. And let's not even get started on Dave Maggadan as the hitting coach. He has done absolutely nothing for this team. And I do agree to some point that it isn't all Wash's fault, but that blame shouldn't immediately go over to JD. Check out some of the articles on Lonestarball about JD.

And honestly, who could JD have signed last offseason to make up for the losses? Waste money on Napoli and Hamilton? AJP has performed decently, and Berkman has been a black hole, but he also saved a lot of money. Money that can now be used for Brian McCann, Jose Abreu and Carlos Beltran. Oh, and Dave Martinez as the new coach. I'm not seeing they need a manager like Joe Maddon or Bob Melvin that can get the most out of the players, no matter the talent.

I don't really agree with the bullpen thing. Injuries really forced his hand. No Harrison, Lewis, and Ogando has hurt. Tepesch and Grimm wore the bullpen down early. Those guys were lights out until they got worn down.

I also don't agree with the rest thing. Profar has played enough infield to give all those guys adequate rest.

My feelings towards JD and his blame lay in the fact that he keeps going for NL pitchers to fix the holes he has. If they aren't pitching in the AL currently, I don't think he should even look at them. Everyone he gets from the other league comes to Texas and sucks. And sucking in Texas this year has nothing to do with home field, since that jet stream has been dead all year. He also could have given Nellie an extension and told him to appeal.

I do agree about needing a new hitting coach. They should think about a highly regarded guy or someone fresh to take over the job. Maybe they should even look at Pudge. I don't think Andrus would have turned his season around like he has without talking to Pudge.

The Rangers have lost 7 in a row without ever leading for the first since they moved here from Washington. This team is historically bad right now.

Anybody else feel like there's no way that Cleveland doesn't take a wild card spot? They've got 4 vs Houston, 2 vs the White Sox, and 4 vs Minnesota, all at home. The other contenders' schedules are considerably more difficult than Cleveland's.

That piece Olbermann just did on the Red Sox self-serving ceremony for Mariano Rivera was fucking great.

Cleveland has a way easier schedule than the Orioles, but the Orioles aren't giving up. Last nights win vs. the Red Sox in 12 innings was fantastic!

Elvis Andrus has 4 hr's all year. 2 of them were against the Rays in one series. Mitch Moreland has 3 hr's against lefties all year. 1 was off Matt Moore last night. Just the Rays luck this year.

Elvis has been balling up lately. His bat speed and approach is finally blossoming. No shame in giving up some dongs to him. Moreland on the other hand.....

Moreland looked like the dude who raked in May.

Also you are right. Elvis has really turned it around in the second half.

Man, can you imagine if Elvis was this good all year long? He'd be around a 5+ fWAR player.

While I don't have any confidence in Moreland, I really hope he can keep it going. Also, don't look now, but Gentry is around 2.5 fWAR as a platoon player.

Is anyone watching the O's-Rays game right now?  Bottom of the 17th.  Their next game is in a little over 11 hours.  The manta rays are already sleeping.  It might be on MLB Network.

I'm hoping Oakland is eliminated in the first round. I hate when the Rays play Oakland or any west coast team. You can always guarantee it'll be a crappy trip, there will be numerous extra inning games, and the Rays will find horrible ways to lose those extra inning games. I feel like the Rays can beat Boston. They pitch Boston really well. The Rays were in horrendous offensive slumps a few of the times they played Boston which resulted in them getting beat. Now Oakland and Detroit that's a toss up. I'm hoping the Rays face the Indians in the play in wild card game. I'd rather face Jimenez or whoever starts that game than Darvish.

Alex Cobb pitched another excellent game today. It should have been a shut out but DeJesus lost a ball in the roof in the ninth for Davis's "triple".

That Manny Machado injury was not pretty. :( And with the Orioles season almost certainly over its even more disheartening.

I was at the game. Glad the Rays came back and won. We couldn't really tell what happened to Manny but yea that looks bad. For the game on Sunday the Rays called up Enny Romero. He was in the Dominican with his family and got a call Saturday night from his agent. He told him he had 1 hour to get to the airport. He pitched pretty damn well for a guy that only had one start at aaa this year
