He managed to provide a decent team without selling the farm (which no manager should ever do). Let's not drink the Galloway Kool-Aid and put this blame on JD. He acquired the best pitcher on the market and that said pitcher has performed terribly. You can't pin that performance on JD. And the only negative for that trade is losing C.J. Edwards. Mike Olt means nothing now. His struggles continued once he went to Chicago.
And he acquired the best right handed hitter on the market. This team would have been in the gutter long ago without Rios, who they have for next year, mind you. Wash hasn't rested players that needed it (Kinsler, namely), nor has he managed the bullpen correctly in multiple games that led to losses. And let's not even get started on Dave Maggadan as the hitting coach. He has done absolutely nothing for this team. And I do agree to some point that it isn't all Wash's fault, but that blame shouldn't immediately go over to JD. Check out some of the articles on Lonestarball about JD.
And honestly, who could JD have signed last offseason to make up for the losses? Waste money on Napoli and Hamilton? AJP has performed decently, and Berkman has been a black hole, but he also saved a lot of money. Money that can now be used for Brian McCann, Jose Abreu and Carlos Beltran. Oh, and Dave Martinez as the new coach. I'm not seeing they need a manager like Joe Maddon or Bob Melvin that can get the most out of the players, no matter the talent.
