Okay, so it's HIGHLY unlikely that the U.S. version of Frozen 3-D Crystal / Diamond Edition is going to make the rumored release date of October 15th, but what do you think the chances are we will see it here at all?

It'll happen, just maybe not in the timeframe of 10/15. They said that we'll be getting the 3D version in the future.

The last I heard is that the US 3D uber release was not going to happen, but maybe there is something in the last month or so that refutes this. The fact that Disney has gone back and forth doesn't bode well in my opinion and they definitely seem to be stepping away from US 3D Blu Ray releases though other studios are still doing them. I got the UK 3D edition when Frozen was first released and was not disappointed. The 3D is very solid so if you like the movie I would not be shy about getting it with this under the deal Amazon UK has going right now. Two 3D releases for about $30 US is not shabby though you do lose out on US Disney Rewards Points.

Here's one of several posts from one of the sites that said we'd get it in Oct.:

This is almost official. Dinsey Pictures will not release anymore 3D Blu-rays. Why this is a mystery. There is no confirmation or denial of this by Disney either however with Frozen, Need for Speed, Maleficient, Planes: Fire and rescue and Pirate Fairy (yes this title had an oversea release in 3D Blu-ray) it is clear that Disney will no longer release any Blu-ray 3D othewise they would have resume to release them. An exeption to the rule is movies from Marvel and probably some Pixar movies although I am in doubt that any more movies from Pixar will be either as the movie Ratatouille has been already released overseas in Blu-ray 3D. 3D fans it is time to find an alternative to get you 3D movies. One option is to get a region free 3D players (there are some) or get a region free disc.

If this is true, that really sucks, especially since 3-D discs don't cost any more to produce than 2-D, and the transfers already exist, as they've been released in every other country but this one. This sale is good, except I already own most of what's on offer.

This pretty much matches what I had been seeing. At least the Disney 3D BDs are still coming out and so far are region free. I would not expect that there will be a Frozen 3D US release which is why I already purchased the UK region free version. While the 3D transfers exist, producing, stocking and distributing a niche product can be tough - especially when there is no longer much of a markup for 3D BDs as there had been in the past. Home 3D must have a higher percentage of sales in other regions which is why they are still making them there and not in the US. Unfortunately this likely doesn't bode well for home 3D in general, but maybe it will experience a resurgence and Disney will rethink their plan.

Think I might jump on this, then, as some BDs that were once region free (like Pinocchio) no longer are.

Used 3d blu-rays at family video. Shipping is $1.99 per order not item. Disc only but some contain both versions on 1 disc.

I Frankenstein $6.99
Legends of Hercules $6.99
Amazing Spider-Man 2 $8.49
Captain America: the winter soldier $9.99

Awesome deals! Come on Transformers 4 and Edge of Tomorrow!

Are 3D blu-rays a "niche" market though? On one end I keep hearing how the 3D adoption rate is higher than ever and more and more people support 3D at home (and even moreso in theaters)..... then on the other hand LG is the only company still producing 3D TV's and Disney is apparently no longer supporting them.

It doesn't make sense to me.... I mean 3D shouldn't be going anywhere. I know people think this 4K nonsense is the next big thing, but even if it is (which I highly doubt - especially if Comcast is successful in buying TWC and dominating the US market) why would that come at the expense of 3D? I know the TV's can do both.... and at this point 3D isn't really that expensive to incorporate into a TV.

Anyways, this really sucks. I was kinda looking forward to Ratatoullie 3D... I didn't even know it was out yet! I can't think of any reason why they wouldn't want to release these in NA unless this is still their lame-ass attempt to push their digital service (the way they used Frozen 3D in the US).

Oh well....all the 3D blu rays on the UK site are region free right? I may pick up Cars or something if I can figure out how to make my amazon.com credit transfer over to amazon.co.uk.

not sure where you heard LG is the only company still manufacturing 3d tv's but just off the top of my head I know sony and samsung still do and I think panasonic and shapp still may as well.

This just sucks. Is there any chance the 3d versions will pop up in the next month? I don't even see a UK release for Planes: Fire and Rescue. Finally, do the UK versions have digital copies that can work in the US? I'd like to get the Steelbooks if I have to import but knowing they work on PS4 and even have a working digital copy if possible.

I think it was Extremetech or Theverge but I didn't save the article.... I think it was the one about Vizio halting production on their 3D TV's? Either way I'm very happy to hear that's not the case for Sony/Samsung/ect, I know when I read it I thought it was rather stupid to just give up on it now. And when it's done right/well there's no denying that 3D adds a lot to the experience.

On the other hand, it makes even less sense for Disney to discontinue the 3D releases now. I mean I know 3D isn't for everybody, but by the same token I don't see it going anywhere, so why not continue to support it? It's been my experience that children get the most out of 3D, and my nephew specifically told me I needed to buy some 3D Disney movies for him to watch (lol spoiled teens...).

Oh well, I'm not a big Disney fan anyway, I enjoy the occasional Pixar/Marvel movie but that's about it.

Now if we can just get Sony and others back to implementing 3D in their games.....

That's the biggest problem with UK Disneys - they usually don't include Digital Copies, DVDs, or Special Features Only discs. You also have to pay shipping (which is by weight, not flat rate), even if you have Amazon Prime, as Prime is only valid within certain countries, but you do NOT have to pay the VAT.

I ordered Cars and Frozen through this offer, and was able to pay for Cars shipping by selling my 2-D copy, and I'll probably get the shipping plus a little extra from my 2-D Frozen.

Also, they DO make 3-D, 4K compatible TVs. The cheapest I've seen them is 20% above their 2-D counterpart.

Nice pickups! any chance you can post a link for Need for Speed and Maleficent?
Picked them up from Sanborns, ordered last Wednesday night and it arrived Monday.

You can read all about it here. Prices have gone up since last week but you can wait it out.

I watched Need for Speed last night, it was a lot better than I expected, good use of 3D too.

Saw that. Of course, every review always starts with how inferior it is to Coraline, which the TRUE 3-D version is not on sale (there's a couple 1950-s style red and blue glasses versions, including an otherwise awesome-looking Collector's Edition). It was on sale for $13 last year, and will probably never be that cheap ever again. This is still a good deal.

There's a Coraline/ParaNorman 3D dual pack on Amazon for around $15 shipped.

Link please?

When I go to this link it shows as $24.50 so I suspect the lower price is over. It is also a UK release, though the reviews show that it is likely region free so it shouldn't be any issue.

Rise of the Guardians 3D is on sale for $9.99 at Best Buy. Two are listed on the website for the same price. This one comes with movie money to the Penguins of Madagascar movie.

57 on Metacritic, so don't expect much, but what the professional critics think and what kids think are often very different.

As a 29 year old male I thoroughly enjoyed Rise of the Guardians. Much better than I expected. The 3D is actually on top of the list of how good it is too.

DO NOT ORDER IF YOU HAVE A REGION 1/A PLAYER! I just contacted the seller and they said these are Region B, NOT Region Free. There are some brands of U.S. players that will play these, but Sony (what I have) is not one of them. Naturally, I asked as an afterthought AFTER placing my order, and since returning it will likely cost what I paid for them, I'll have a nice set of coasters unless I get lucky and they work.
Is it possible to contact amazon? The description clearly says it plays on all blu ray players.

Any deals on the 3D version of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Extended Edition coming out Nov. 4?

It plays fine on my US player as well. It doesn't specify a region on the case or discs anywhere I can see.

No, they are being jerks like they were last year.
Yeah, last year the An Unexpected Journey 3D Extended was a very high price from when it was available to pre-order on Amazon until the day it was released, then it was $29.99 during release week on Amazon and I'm pretty sure it wasn't cheaper anywhere else. Unfortunately I can't remember the exact number it was available for to pre-order, but it was probably somewhere around the $37.xx the The Desolation of the Smaug 3D Extended has been hovering around since it was first available to pre-order.

EDIT: Of course, no sooner do I type all of that, then the price changes to $32.99 on Amazon for The Desolation of the Smaug 3D Extended. Hopefully it drops lower next week!
