Kind of treating this as a general 3DS thread to ask a question: other forums seem to have a negative opinion about Paper Mario Sticker Star. Is it just that bad or were the changes too jarring for people (I can see no experience or team members being a bummer).

This would be a present for someone who enjoyed the Wii Paper Mario but, not having played either, I'm not sure what changes, if any, there were between the two. And if liking one would translate to the other.

The back up plan is Animal Crossing since he already has Zelda but doesn't want to play the new Pokemon games. Unless there's just a must have game that I'm missing.
I like Sticker Star but I wouldn't pay more than $10 for it. It looks great and has a fun story but the mechanics are extremely shallow. Unlike the original Paper Mario games there's no RPG elements or anything to provide any incentive to fight anything you don't have to. The fighting is fun but pretty quickly you start getting into fights that are avoidable and coming out worse for wear and resenting it. I'm having fun with it but I wouldn't get it unless it was very cheap.

The Wii game is a typical Mario action game in the Paper Mario trappings, Sticker Star is a pseudo action game in an RPG skin with turn based combat based on a consumable inventory of stickers.

I would get Animal Crossing over Sticker Star without question. What other options there are to recommend really depend what else they're interested in and already have beyond Zelda. There's Mario and Luigi Dream Team if you want something like the older Paper Mario games.

Yeah, I should have mentioned that he already has Dream Team and Mario Kart. And getting a copy of Fire Emblem to go along with whatever the second game turns out to be. Not owning a 3DS is making me go back and do research. Would have made my life easier if The World Ends With You had gotten a sequel or Phoenix Wright had gotten a physical release.

Well let's see then. Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon is very good as is Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D and both should have pretty wide appeal. Etrain Odyssey Millenium Girl and and Shin Megami Tensei IV are really good as well but probably aren't going to appeal much to someone that's not into dungeon crawling RPGs. Or you could just do the sensible thing and buy them Pokemon and guilt them into opening it in front of you so they have no choice but to play it. That's really most of this year's top tier games.

According to everyone everywhere: Pushmo.

I need confirmation, though. While it looks ok, I'm having a really hard time pulling the $7 trigger on the game. Even while watching an absolutely glowing Youtube review telling me why I NEED to buy it, I keep thinking how much I don't care. If there was ever a game that sorely needed a demo, it's Pushmo.
I pulled the trigger full price on Pushmo and Crashmo and don't regret it for a second. Terrific gameplay, through and through. I love Intelligent Systems. They're puzzle games that frustrate and satisfy in equal measures. "Why can't I figure this out, I've been playing this puzzle for an hour now and can't get it right, I'm going to look up the solution online, wait, let me try this first.... Holy cow, I figured it out, MAN that's satisfying."

There's also an entire library of DS games that the 3DS can play. My vote for DS game (If he likes Phoenix Wright) goes for Ghost Trick, my personal Game of the Year for 2011.

Edit: Sorry for spamming posts, I was just browsing this thread a lot because I love 3ds games!!!

Thanks for the input guys. He had a DS for years and just recently got a 3DS during the Black Friday deals so I'm not 100% sure what DS games he's already played, although Ghost Trick might be worth a look since he liked Time Hollow.

Appreciate the help.

If in doubt AC New Leaf is great though and a perfectly good backup plan still.

I don't know why I had it in my head that the XL came with an 8GB when it comes with a 4GB.  I even saw this when I transferred systems two months ago.  If I had realized I probably would have gone with a cheaper 16GB then the 32GB card I got but oh well at least I'll have plenty of space if Nintendo starts running more compelling digital sales.

I finally actually bought Crimson Shroud and Friday Monsters. Still super torn on Liberation Maiden ($5 for a 90 minute game is holding me back). Did someone say Crazy Construction was worth $3? I just noticed it and it seems pretty decent.

hmm... does anyone have a guide for international users... on how to purchase from the US eShop?
Do you have an NA region 3DS? I would imagine with how the system's region locked that it would be impossible without one.

Don't buy Hometown Story. Is awful and underwhelming, the very definition of tepid, and poorly designed. I bought it day one and have never been more sad over a purchase. Please read reviews before taking a risk. Don't be dumb like me. I thought it was a surefire hit given its pedigree. I was wrong.

I played the Crazy Construction demo and thought it felt like junky shovelware personally. Its design is fun for about two minutes, which is about half the length of the demo. No, I don't hate everything.

I think each 3DS just buys from its own region, but this is regardless of its actual physical location. You have to be able to get money onto the 3DS, though, so if you're outside of the US with a US 3DS, I'd imagine you'd need to use the credit card of someone whose billing address is in the US (in whatever region you select in the eShop and enter a zipcode for); or you'd need to get US eShop cards.

There's your guide, babycakes! Hopefully I'm accurate. :)

Hey guys, I know I missed getting Etrian Odyssey Untold for 22 dollars, 27.99 isn't so bad either. I was just wanting to make sure before I buy it that if I buy it from Amazon, it will come with the soundtrack right?

Most likely yes.

Does it even advertise it comes with a soundtrack? Maybe I missed where this idea even comes from..
I believe first print copies of the game include the soundtrack.

What happened to the game that was supposed to be $2 today? I was gonna buy the Megaman game but I'm not really a fan of megaman games. Was that sale only once? I thought it was suppose to continue every 2 days?

thanks! :D haha I was wondering if I could use a non-US credit card to purchase from the US eShop while using a US billing address hmm

I am in the same situation, but spend most of the year outside of the US - you can still download from the US eshop, it doesn't attempt to "verify" your location or anything other than the billing adress of the credit card.

UPDATE: Project X Zone is now $14.99 in the eShop through January 1st! Quick question for those that have played it, do I need to know the different franchises and characters in the game to understand the story? Because I played the demo and it was pretty cool, but I am familiar with very few of the characters lol.

Not really, no. The actual "story" is independent of the individual characters, but there are lots of references scattered around that you'll miss if you don't know them. The game also has character profiles to introduce you to everyone as the game progresses.

Wow. This is easily the biggest sale the eShop has ever seen. For anybody wanting recommendations, VVVVVV is a fantastic platformer where you're just flipping your character's gravity to get around, which is used to great effect in its Metroid-esque open world map. The first campaign is fairly short at about 2-4 hours depending on your desire to get the collectibles, but beating it opens up a handful more campaigns to play and some other bonus stuff.

Also, I feel for the guy here that bought Cave Story recently because it had never gone on sale before. There are some big games on this list in terms of those that never or rarely go on sale.

I thought that sale was over? Or is it coming back?

EDIT

Nevermind, I see now that it's coming back... I may have to grab another one.

Nightsky was $10, no wonder I haven't picked it up yet. I got VVVVVV when it was on sale the first time around, it's such a simple game with basic graphics but I had a blast with it. There are some challenging segments of that game that took forever to accomplish. It's not a unenjoyable frustrating challenge like Mutant Mudds.

Speaking of Mutant Mudds, sometime in the beginning of next year, there will be an update to the 3DS version to bring it in line with all other ports of the game.

I was going to buy Cave Story last night, but had to run the update to access the store.  1st time I've been happy about an update delaying my access.  VVVVVV will be purchased now too.

Wow, this sale is exciting!

thanks! :D haha I was wondering if I could use a non-US credit card to purchase from the US eShop while using a US billing address hmm
No, I don't think so. :( The billing address needs to be the billing address for your credit card; otherwise it wouldn't make much sense! Maybe there is a way around it.

Nice to see that big a list when 4 games going on sale was a good week. Now all we need is more games to be 50%+ and I'll start taking taking a serious look. Though now that I have Crimson Shroud I can't really think of anything I really want on the eShop.

Wow. Good thing I stocked up on eShop cards from the BBY sale. That Cave Story is the fully-updated one, right? Thinking of picking up that, Mutant Mudds, & maybe Ikachan or Witch and the Hero.

...For that matter, is there going to be any difference between the 3DS and WiiU versions of Mutant Mudds once that update hits, graphics aside?

Nothing on sale that I was planning on buying, but new things that were too expensive shall be bought:

Ikachan: A one-hour game that didn't seem worth $5, I suppose for $3 I'll buy it.

Cave Story: Already bought this one at full price, and I don't regret it one bit.  Haven't played it yet, but no regrets.

(for those of you who haven't bought it yet, it's like a "Buy Cave Story Get Ikachan Free" sale.)

NIghtSky: Reminds me a lot of Windosill and Soul Bubbles (aside from the usual Limbo references), but I didn't want to touch it for $10.  $5 = buy.

And my personal stinkers:

Mutant Mudds: I played the demo and absolutely hated it.  It's very punishing and not at all rewarding.

Witch & Hero: Junk at any price.  We should be past the days of "bump into things to attack"

Family Kart 3D: Watch the video on the eShop for the most grating-sounding 2 minutes of your week

At the rate they're going, I think I'll wait for Pushmo and Mighty Switch Force (1&2) to go on sale.  It has to happen eventually...right?

I have to admit I like Witch & Hero.  It is junk, there is no doubt about it, but I still like it.  Can't help it.  There is a lot of good stuff about it, and yes, junky stuff about it.  I don't even mind the bump to attack part (reminds me of Ys, though this is nowhere near the calibre of Ys).

I played the demo, liked it, and bought it at full price.  I am a sucker for nostalgia.  The storyline is cute, neat graphics, fun music.  The gameplay is addictive, despite being, again, kinda junky.

It's rare for me to genuinely enjoy a rather poor game.  :)  I actually recommend it.

I'm going to get Project X Zone since it's from the same developers as Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier, whose battle system I enjoyed enough to endure the mediocre story. The battle system is all about using your attacks to juggle enemies as long as possible with the help of allies that you can call in for additional attacks for maximum damage, which was different from the typical JRPG battle systems.

Would sure be great if Steamworld Dig would go on sale, but I'll probably get it regardless.
Gonna be an echo and say it's also on steam (and maybe it'll get a sale but it came out recently there) if you don't like... the console tied deal... in case people aren't.. aware. pls no bash.

It's really cool to see Nintendo have such a nice sale on the eShop.

Perfect timing to pick up some games with the eShop cards going on sale this month.

Probably going to pick up Mutant Mudds and Cave Story as well as Project X Zone if I like the demo.

Project X Zone at $15 is closer to my price point than the $20 the physical copy but then I'm stuck with it and that's not quite a big enough savings for that me thinks.

Would sure be great if Steamworld Dig would go on sale, but I'll probably get it regardless.
You're about a month or so late.

hmm what's the BBY sale on the eShop cards?
20% off, was last week and next week.

Edit- Witch and Hero actually doesn't seem as bad as it did initially. Would be nice if it was more like $1.99.
