Nintendo has announced a series of sales based on beloved characters/IP over the next four weeks, which covers The Legend of Zelda, Mega Man, Mario, and Donkey Kong.

Starting tomorrow, they're putting The Legend of Zelda games on the eShop:

The Legend of Zelda - $3.49 - 30% Off

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX - $3.99 - 33% Off

Zelda II: The Adventures of Link - $3.49 - 30% Off
Glad to finally pick up Links Awakening DX and Zelda II for a sale price. Looks like my SMT/FE credit will be getting spent between Zelda, Mario & Donkey Kong games. Nintendo needs to keep sales like these coming.

Is there any way to pick up some of these if you don't currently own a 3ds? I'm getting the zelda one next week, but I'm interested in some of the zelda games in sale as well as EO4.

Unfortunately no. Since all games are tied to the system currently you need an actual system.

cant remember if that was a good game or not.. Its a gameboy game so  probally  translate to crap on the 3ds

You have two different display options. By default, the 3DS expands the lower GBC resolution display to fit the new system's upper screen. The result is a little blurry, since the new screen's ratio isn't a perfect match for what the old Game Boy was working with. It's a workable view and certainly playable, it just doesn't look that sharp.

The second display option has been given more effort, though, and it's the one I prefer so far -- it renders the viewable game area at its original 160 x 144 pixel resolution. Since that's quite a bit smaller than filling the whole 3DS display, this option then surrounds the game display area with a border graphic of an old Game Boy Color system. It's a pretty slick look. (Just hold down Start or Select when launching the game from the main 3DS menu.

Glad i found this.. i pass

Was going to smack the poster above me til I saw who it was. Zelda links awakening is an awesome game and it plays just finen on the 3ds.

DAMN. Will Fire Emblem EVER go on sale digitally? Now that Nintendo is finally starting to show signs of getting their online act together, I'd feel more comfortable making larger purchases.

Ugh, that sucks. Also makes me wonder if it's worth it to buy 3DS games from the eShop if it's going to be tied to a system, and not a user. Which sucks, as I like the idea of Fire Emblem and whatnot living on the system. Especially since they don't seem to go on sale much anywhere, so there's not a huge cost savings for physical, as far as I can tell. And I'm not one to trade in games...

Nice to see some VC sales, prolly pick up LoZ

Is Zelda 2 as bad as I've heard some people say ?

EDIT  - Also Links Awakening is fucking brilliant, may be my favourite Zelda game.

I enjoyed playing The Adventures of Link, though not as much as the original game. I'm guessing that people did not enjoy the 2d scrolling part of the game. The concept of using mana/magic was a little awkward too, but nothing gamebreaking about it.

For what it's worth, I could not stand playing DS games on my 3DS. They looked awful. (Look great on my XL, though, which is another story.) Game Boy games, on the other hand, I never minded. Even with my big XL screen and the option to use a pixel-perfect mode (which is probably still bigger than the GBC's original screen), I'm fine with it "stretched". For some reason, Game Boy games look fine stretched where as to me DS games did not.

The fact that they're getting their online act together might mean sales on first-party Nintendo titles, but yeah, I don't think we've ever once seen any discount on any first-party title on the eShop.

You sound to me like a good candidate for digital games. You're held back I guess by a fear of losing your system or breaking it and it being unplayable? I agree it's a really stupid system, but it's worked fine for me. I hate it in principle and do have a bit of anxiety over the idea of losing my 3DS, but I've never lost a system in my life, nor even broke one (unless you count my Xbox 360 which broke itself).

Worse. :) A brilliant game rendered unplayable by terrible design decisions that make it way more difficult than it should ever need to be.

Actually, I think the 2D scrolling is awesome. Even the mana/magic is great. Even the grinding. What irks the hell out of me is the difficulty and how you go back to the beginning of the game when you lose all your lives and have to "continue". I'd love a remake of this game or a sequel to it. I had to use restore points to beat it, and I felt a lot of frustration playing it from what I personally think are cripplingly terrible design choices, but what a neat game otherwise.

I bet 3DS save states will help a ton. Starting at the beginning all the time is a real drag.

Definitely do. But even with that, and fully powered-up, I was experiencing some real gamer rage at points. Might just be my problem, though that I need to work on. (One reason I prefer RPGs and other games that don't require trial/error manual dexterity!)

WHOA not a deal, but River City Ransom apparently comes to the 3DS eShop today and has 2-player via download play!  Instant purchase for me.

Just giving another nod to Link's Awakening DX. It is my favourite Zelda, no contest.
It's even better than A Link to the Past in a few ways, in my opinion. Got a few niggling things that hold it back (really? I have to read about the dungeon key every single time I pick it up? every time I accidentally walk into a boulder without the glove equipped I have to read about how it's heavy? inventory management issues as well, and a few dungeon layouts that are obtuse to say the least), but it is one of, if not the best, 2D Zeldas.

Link's Awakening is my favorite Zelda game, period. It's like an 8-bit Link to the Past with a better story and characters. Totally unique and charming, and plays very well on the 3DS. Cant go wrong for $4.

Yeah, I think I probably am a good candidate. I'm just not a fan of the "system" vs. "account" aspect of it - that, and occasionally I do like the option to lend games out. I think it's mostly just hesitence to make the plunge, but then, my "to buy" list isn't all that long at the moment - Fire Emblem & both Etrian Odyssey games. Hence why I'm bummed I can't pre-buy EO4 while it's on sale this week.

You'll probably end up on board despite yourself like I did. Hopefully Nintendo will get its act together.

Yeah, EOIV is a steal at that price. Man did I have fun with that game. About 80 hours of fun, in fact, and I quit before finishing every last thing.

Picked up the Zelda games I was missing. I love these character game sales. I'm gonna pass on the Mega Man games but can't wait for the Mario and Donkey Kong weeks.

I wonder which games will be with which week.  For instance, there are a crapton of Mega Man games.  Mario, too.  Donkey Kong, hmm, wonder if the 3DS Donkey Kong Country remake game thingy will be on sale.  That would be nice, considering it's about $20 in stores if you hunt.

What's annoying to me is that I have to decide if I want them on 3DS or Wii U, or buy both.  Dats layme.

The new deals for this week:

This is the endless debate for Nintendo this gen. I'll never drop $40 on a digital title I can't retrieve if my system breaks, but $5-10 purchases don't really bother me. Odds are I'll get my money's worth at that price even if I lose my system. Same for digital-only games.

Yeah, I still haven't finished EOII, much less started EOIII on my DS. Which is why I'm not too broken up about missing out on IV right now - I figure it'll go back on sale eventually. I am interested in Millenium Girl though, as the idea of EO with an actual storyline in INCREDIBLY appealing to me. That, and a fixed party, because I just get paralyzed with party choice. :)

And to keep this semi-on-topic, @#$%@#%$! The Zelda games are going off sale on the 22nd? I might just have to shell out $6 for Link's Awakening, as that is up there with LTTP as far as awesome zelda games. You'd think that they'd have done the zelda sales next week, after all of us who are jumping into the 3DS pool for the Zelda 3DS have actually gotten our systems. *sigh*

I have the Mega Man games on my PSP/Vita so that's why I'm passing. Mega Man was one of the best series growing up. I'm sure we'll see Mario & Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move in that sale. I want to pick that game up and I can see $2-3 off for the sale. I really want Donkey Kong Jr. to be on sale.

I thought I had read some discussion somewhere else that if your system broke, and you had the serial number, Nintendo could transfer your game purchases to your new system? That's something at least, if it's true. I wonder if your saves are "compatible" after the transfer as well. That would make the $40 game purchase a lot more bearable for me. I do like the idea of just being able to boot up my 3DS and play something.

I might be wrong, but I don't think Nintendo has had any sales on their digital retail titles on the eShop at all.

I was thinking about this too. I doubt we see Returns at a discount, it will more than likely be DK '94, Mario V DK Minis on the Move and a some NES version

I've already played and beaten the hell out of all the Mega Man games on the VC on my NES and in other forms over the years, but if they're cheap enough I might like to have them on my 3DS too.

I don't know about a broken system, but generally speaking the system transfer works very well and transfers everything, including saved games. If there's a problem... depends. Check out this horror story:

http://kotaku.com/5982965/nintendo-fan-is-unhappy-with-nintendos-200-answer-to-his-400-wii-u-problem

For several years, Jon used to download lots of old Virtual Console games to his Wii. He bought a bunch of Wii eShop games, too. Recently, with the enthusiasm any Nintendo fan has for a new Nintendo machine, he bought a Wii U. He set up a Nintendo ID on the system, transferred his Wii games to that Wii U and then discovered that he'd bought a lemon...

...he took his Wii U back to the store he bought it from and swapped it for a new one. Problem solved? Not at all. He'd just created his new problem. He took the new Wii U home and discovered he couldn't set up the same Nintendo ID he'd used on the first system. He had to make a new ID. Then, he said, he found out that he couldn't get those $400+ worth of games onto his new Wii U. They were locked to the broken one... the one he didn't have anymore. As far as Nintendo's online infrastructure was concerned, he wasn't the Jon of old. He was new, and he didn't have a right to those games.
And if it's stolen, they ask for a valid police report before they'll transfer your games to a new system:

http://www.nintendolife.com/forums/wii-u/oh_dear_stolen_console_no_worries_nintendo_will_transfer_your_account

It does have GBA and A Link to the Past was released on GBA.
Before everyone else descends on this:

Nope. 3DS has GBA games via the Ambassador program, but they run in DS mode. The eShop doesn't currently sell any GBA games at all (which most of us agree doesn't make any sense). My own personal theory remains that Nintendo hates money and doesn't want any more of it.

Nintendo should be selling DS games, considering they already sell DSiWare in the eShop and DS games are already compatible. I can't imagine that the process is much different than what's already there. They're also tiny compared to 3DS games, so it'd be great if I could give Nintendo money for them instead of GameStop for card-only games.

Yeah. There's still a lot of DS games at retail, but the fact that people are buying digital games at all means they're only losing money not putting them online. Especially older titles that you mostly only find at Gamestop now...

It's such an odd and disjointed online strategy. With just a few changes to their infrastructure and releases of games that have already been produced, they could have quite the formidable digital salesfront.

There are so many mysteries about how/why Nintendo does things.  Is there a logical reason, or is it incompetence?  I have given up trying to make sense of it.

Given the fact that the 3DS is forced into DS mode for things, I have to wonder if that isn't the reason Nintendo is so hesitant to put any DS/GBA/SNES up on the eShop.  Maybe they don't want people walking around in DS compatibility mode and not using the 3DS features.  That's the only "logic" I can find.  And you can reply, well, that makes no sense, because you can still buy/play DS games.  Yes, you can, but maybe they think selling them on the eShop would open a new can of worms and are waiting until the next generation.

But the logic has already started to wither once we go down that line of thinking.  Nothing makes sense!  And we're back to wondering--is it laziness?  Incompetence?

If we want to go to a very basic question: why the heck isn't the Wii U VC full of tons upon tons of games?  Why doesn't it at least have everything the Wii VC had?

Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony are all three pretty inscrutable.  I suppose in the end, in the case of all three of them, it is a mixture of logic, incompetence, and not being in touch with consumers.

I can't wait for the megaman sale.  I hope they're able to port these all to the 3ds.  Nintendo is going to make my poor these next few weeks.

Downloaded the new Sonic and Lego Marvel demos. Not feeling Sonic. Surprisingly, Lego Marvel is the first Lego video game I'll consider buying(wasn't pressed by any others I tried). Probably for the Wii U, though.

Grabbed Link's Awakening. Now I have six LoZ VC games waiting for me on 3DS.
Now you can pick up Ocarina of Time 3D and A Link Between Worlds for 8! Also, don't forget about Four Swords Adventures, unless you missed that one; that's 9!

I played through Zelda 1, 2, Link's Awakening and also A Link to the Past (that one on Wii VC). Pretty proud of myself. No idea how I beat these games as a kid, though. I was hoping to get through Ocarina of Time before A Link Between Worlds came out, but I'm thinking that won't happen now.

I have a ton of Zelda games on my 3DS:

The Legend of Zelda

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX

The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons

Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition

Zelda II: The Adventures of Link

Five of them were free and the Oracles were on sale, so that's a good haul for maybe $6 or $8 total. I even have a physical copy of Ocarina of Time, though I lost the case for it. :whistle2:(

The entirety of the whole Zelda series can be played on 3DS and Wii U (or Wii, for that matter).  Kind of crazy to think about.

Those N64 Zeldas have not aged well graphically, though.  :)  I hope we see that remake of Majora's Mask everyone talks about, because it's the only one I've never finished now.  (Oh, that's a lie--haven't played the DS ones yet.)

They really need to put Minish Cap on the VC. I would buy that in a heartbeat.
I think we've established that they need to do a lot of things with the eShop, as they've got several potential avenues for money (SNES, GBA, DS) that they should be pushing towards instead of dinking around with NES games that don't always look so good on the 3DS' small screen.

I wonder if they're going to do GBA games on Wii U or what. You'd think if they were going to do it on 3DS, it would have been done by now. But I already wrote earlier about how Nintendo makes no sense at all, so I'll cut off my speculation here.

Not only that, but the selection, ugh. How many times are they going to release junk like Baseball, Golf, Wrecking Crew, URBAN CHAMPION. anyway yeah we've all pretty much agreed it makes no sense. I can't help wittering on and on about it in my bewilderment. Their behavior just defies all explanation.

Let's bombard their twitter and fb page and make our demands known. How could they ignore mass consumers wanting to throw money at them?! :)
