Is there a way for me to switch so that I don't pay tax on the 3ds eshop. It's the only game device that charges me tax.
Not ethically, no. It's based upon where you live, like most sales taxes. Just gotta take your bumps where they come. I'm lucky enough not to pay sales tax on any game device, but I unfortunately have to pay Amazon.com sales tax for some reason.

Do you live in Washington, maybe? I know Nintendo is in Redmond.

I might be wrong, too, but I don't think they charge me any!  I'm in ND.  Next time I make a purchase I'll have to pay closer attention.  I don't think they charge me tax though.

Delaware residents could likely answer this one best. They have no tax there. Any Delaware CAGs?
Well if there's no sales tax they wouldn't be charged any by Nintendo. They apply the states tax rate regardless it seems. Like here in MI you don't pay it on the cards but you get taxed on your purchase with the credit or if you pay directly.

Edit- Forgot I hadn't purchased anything on this new system and went to buy Steamworld. So I put in one of the zip codes for Dover and no sales tax.

So a Delaware zip code should do the trick, albeit a bit unethical.

People here in PA, NJ, and MD all bootleg high-dollar items from Delaware all the time just to cut out $30~50 in sales tax.

Well it's a little annoying in states that it's not mandated.
I'm 99% sure I don't pay sales tax on the eshop here in ND... We have a 7% sales tax which I pay locally and at Amazon.com, but I really don't think I pay it on the eshop. I was about to buy Gradius to make sure, but I gotta conserve my efunds! I'll be buying Hometown Story probably on the 22 and for sure Phoenix Wright on the 24th, so I can report back then. :)

Yeah I used to live in PA 5 mins away from the DE border and there was a Best Buy and a Target right next to the border on the DE side, good times.

Now I'm 30 mins away so unless I'm spending big it's not worth the drive.

I was going to purchase it, but for some reason it says its no longer on sale. I thought the deal would last until the end of the day. I guess not :/

I live in Alabama so I have to pay 9% sales tax. It's just annoying because It makes it a pain to buy things when you have left over balance. Also can you just pay the actual amount instead of having to add increments?

I think they reckon it based on noon in whatever time zone (it's 11 a.m. central time for me).  Kind of odd, but they do that instead of midnight.

It was only a dollar or something off the price anyway...  Not much of a sale.

You can. When you get to the checkout page there are money options of $10, $20, $50, etc. But near the bottom there should be an option that says like "Add needed funds". This way you only need add of how much you are buying.

I bought Steam World Dig for $7.70 exactly and didn't need to add the $10 option.

While changing your zip code does work, it is technically tax evasion, which is very illegal, so do so at your own risk. Obviously, small purchases on the 3DS are very unlikely to ever come back to haunt you, especially when using prepaid cards (since using a credit card is going require a billing address) but I feel like it needs to be said alongside these suggestions.

I learned this lesson last week, ends at noon EST I believe.
Yep. OP states it clearly. Frisky dryly points it out to someone almost every week. Agree that it's odd they don't just change it over at midnight or in sync with e-Shop updates.

Good to know. Buying Steamworld when it was on sale left me with $0.83 in my eshop account and I was like how am I ever going to use that up.

Also if you missed the sale, it was 20% off/$1.80; I've put a few hours into it and would say you should get it at full price if you're interested.

Okay, even though we're off the topic of taxes by now...

I bought (a horribly reviewed game which I for some reason can't get enough of called) Witch and Hero for $3.99, and it charged me $3.99.  No tax.  I also bought Gradius (which I actually regret--damn that hard) for $4.99, and yep, $4.99 total.  No tax.

I live in ND, and we have a 7% or so sales tax here.  Nintendo does not charge tax though, regardless of the state tax, because they are not mandated to.  Thus, we see that Nintendo does not in fact charge sales tax in states where it has no mandate to, which I think would be illegal anyway.

So, if you're getting charged sales tax on the eshop in your state, there must be a reason for it, similar to how I bafflingly get charged sales tax on Amazon.com.

States have different laws, lol. I think it's as simple as that.

I guess so, but I think mainly, if Nintendo has no operations in your state, or if your state has no sales tax, the eshop isn't going to charge any.

Anyone care to weigh in on RE: The Mercenaries being worth $10, already have Revelations.
That's how much I bought it for from Target a couple months back, and completely blind bought this game. It's a game where you have to kill as many zombies in a set time. They're just like the mini games from Resident Evil 4 if i'm remembering correctly. I'd say if you're going to plan on completing everything then it's worth the price tag.

The costumes are kinda borin'. :) Day 1 purchase for me, too. And I had to cleverly find a way to download the costume DLC without spoiling anything (I haven't played Apollo Justice yet!).

Anyone care to weigh in on RE: The Mercenaries being worth $10, already have Revelations.
I paid a bit more than that for a physical copy, and I don't regret it. It's fun in short bursts...and can get pretty intense. It's basically a "remix" of the mercenaries minigames from RE 4 & 5 with sort of mission-based levels (like surviving enemy waves, killing enemies before time runs out like the standard mercenaries games, etc...plus a few boss fights). So if you liked those, you should have fun with this. The controls feel surprisingly well mapped out, too.

Any word when the DLC episode comes out? I have $15 or so left after I buy PW 5 & I don't want to have to buy another EShop card.

Unchained Blades getting a drop is nice.
I have a tough time with Atlus and Xseed, because I want to buy early as possible and support them, but on the other hand, they're pretty smart about having sales and price drops.

Unchained Blades is a lot of fun if you enjoy that type of game. It's janky and weird, to be sure, so probably not for people who aren't into that kind of thing. It's actually got a lot of variety for a dungeon-crawler, which is enjoyable. I didn't dig the main character much, but I think most people would, as he's far from the normal trope.

That sucks if so! It's not really worth $2 even :p I don't know why I enjoy it so much. I am starting to get a little annoyed with it, though.
downloaded the demo.. I was sort of shocked the demo was 1/2 of the game (demo goes up to level 10)

if it had ton more levels i would of got it for 4 (if it had around 100 + levels) 20 is way too short

Unchain blades is worth 20. One if not the only 30 buck download i have on the 3ds and worth every penny. I think it took around 50 to 60 hours to beat main story (at least that is what my 3ds says)

was thinking planet crashers but after seeing reviews and its only 6 hours long i pass

Yeah, Witch and Hero (can never remember if that's the name) is a real grindfest, too.  Those 20 levels will take about as long as 100 should, and then you can play again on hard after you beat it.  What's sad is that it could have been a retro-styled eshop must-have.  Instead, it's got potential but is ultimately just looking for suckers like me.  (I do still like it though.)

I bought Unchained Blades at full price, too.

If you played revelations, anything worth experiencing with the HD version on consoles?
I have both. They're pretty much the same game, really. The HD port adds one enemy type...that can actually be a little annoying...and I guess changes some of the enemy locations. It also makes a few changes to raid mode (in the form of a few more playable characters and the fact that you get far fewer weapons and things for completing levels).... Playing in HD on a big screen is a little more atmospheric, probably, but the 3DS version is solid...and the only version that's actually in 3D if you're interested in 3D.

Haha...actually, if anything, playing the HD version highlighted how impressive the 3DS version was to begin with.

Ah. I'll stick with the 3DS version then. Didn't get very far in it yet. I'm just having a love affair with Jill's backside.
