Concerning the Bravely Default demo I kind of think it's funny all the people who either "don't get it" or think it's too hard.  I definitely think (barring some exceptions of course) you date yourself with how you receive the demo   If you didn't find it too hard and "got it" really quick you're probably an older gamer used to the older RPGS...if it's too hard you probably weren't around for the JRPG hayday.
As for the sales, I ended up getting Devil Survivor OC'ed a few days ago and it took me a while to start it (just didn't have a chance to give it the attention I wanted to) and so far I'm loving it!  There's a lot of room for improvement (I'd like to be able to actually walk around for instance, also while the art is great I wish the graphics on the grid were a lot better) and normally games "like this" (as in weirder niche games) aren't my thing.  However it really has a perfect mix of genres and cool story and it's the first game I've played in a while where I really wanted to just keep playing.  Guess it's a little late to give recommendations, but if anybody bought it and hasn't tried it yet I highly recommend moving it to the front of your backlog queue.

Picked up a few other ones in the bigger sale too, almost got the newest SMT but heard the exploration was even worse in that.

This was discussed in the last page and FAQ regarding how eshop sales end.

Because today is 1/6 and it lasted until the time the eShop updated today?

Eshop updates at 12pm est. Missed it by a couple of hours.
Thanks guys. I guess it was my fault for assuming a deal was going to be honored the entire day. It just sucks having 30 bucks stuck on my 3DS ...Bravery Default will now get my business with hopes of Super Mario 3 coming soon!

I really wish I had pulled the trigger on Etrian Odyssey IV - now I have $50 in eshop cards that need using.

I'm hoping for more sales on digital exclusives since it isn't generally worth saving only a couple of bucks versus buying the physical copy that can be sold after being finished.

What SMT IV sacrifices in exploration, it makes up for a thousandfold in every other aspect of the game. Does take some getting used to, being a dot on the overworld screen. But please don't let that prevent you from enjoying what is otherwise a superb production and an immensely replayable experience. I had wanted to get Overclocked, but the character designs (in dialogue portraits) chase me away whenever I'm about to pull the trigger.

I'm hoping that we'll see more pop up after this massive list finally ends.  I missed the summer/fall sales so I'd like to see some of those come back on sale.

Do they generally have this many deals throughout the year or has this just been a pre-holiday season special?

Tell it, oh mighty sage.

If anything, not being able to understand how others can dislike something is an indictment of your ability to think outside yourself, not an indictment of the gamer in question. Diff'rent stokes, eh? I'm still keeping an open mind about the game, but the demo did absolutely nothing for me (may have even dissuaded me). And I grew up on the same shit as you, so have a seat.

I still think we're all (or most of us) just out of practice.  There hasn't been a real JRPG for a long time now (I know, I'm ignoring SMT IV and others).

I also don't think its particularly fair to compare Xenoblade and Bravely Default.  As great a game as Xenoblade is, its combat has more in common with World of Warcraft than any classic RPG (Japanese or otherwise).

Bravely Default is also a victim of its own hype and our own (at least my) ferocious desperation.

But personally, I'm glad they didn't just create a demo out of the first hour of the game, or worse, yank something from mid-game for us to play.  That's as confusing, or more confusing (the latter).

Will download the Bravely Default demo and maybe play it tonight.

As for the current sales/drops, I'm looking at spending some of my discount eShop cards (from Best Buy) but nothing is catching my eye. I thought maybe Myst since I remember the original fondly.

But no: http://www.metacritic.com/game/3ds/myst

See, I've been playing RPG's my whole life and I can't stand grid-based(though turn based is fine by me). I still want to try Fire Emblem Awakening, so we'll see how I like that.
So how did you like it? I have put over 60 hours into the game so far and and replaying DLC and the boxes just to drag it out. I know I'm going to be sad when I beat this game and have to go on to something not quite as good. I'll be preo-ordering any Fire Emblem sequel the moment it's announced.

I'm kind of in the same boat - nearing 80 hours and just don't want to stop. I had planned to start over on lunatic, but I just see no real need to do so anymore since i've already done about everything I wanted. I am going to go back and play some of the older games, though I'm pretty sure without casual mode I'm not going to like them as much. I enjoyed this game for the characters and supports, not difficulty.

I do think I'll go back to play lunatic once. I'm wondering if it changes anything when you let someone die and stay dead. Any extra cut scenes? Plus I want to see how pairing different characters may affect the team. It's an awesome game. So glad they didn't abandon the series.

I think I would have been better playing a stay dead mode from the start as I couldn't bear to lose many characters after having gotten attached on this playthrough. Granted a lot of them I couldn't care less about, but I'd just be one of the other death/reset players out there.

Have you played any of the other Fire Emblems? I missed out on the console versions myself, but I've found Awakening to easily be the weakest of the handheld offerings by far. I mean obviously the graphics/music/interface have been much improved from the GBA versions, but the stories, characters, and gameplay itself pale in comparison to Shadow Dragon and the GBA Fire Emblems. It just feels really dumbed down in an attempt to rope in the casual audience and newbies (ironic given how much of the story relates to Marth), and adding in crap like character customization needlessly didn't help. I know the first GBA game we got was similarly dumbed down but it didn't feel like it was sacrificing story or gameplay like Awakening does. I guess it just feels like Awakening sold it's soul in an attempt to cater to everyone.

And frankly I'm surprised anybody was willing to touch that DLC. Everything I've played of it has been utter crap. As free DLC, or maybe even $1 apiece it would be ok, but $3 apiece for maps that can be beaten in 10-15 minutes seems like a poor value by any standard, but doubly so when you account for just how simple it is for devs to create extra maps/units in a game like Fire Emblem Awakening (for those unaware, creating your own Fire Emblem maps is easier than creating your own SMB levels). And I love how you get a "big name" unit from a past game (half of which haven't even come out in America) yet they feel just like the generic unit you make out of the character creator, with nothing apart from the name making them stand out as something special. You'd think that suddenly fighting alongside the legendary trinity of Eliwood/Hector/Lyn would yield some interesting side conversations, but no.

Don't get me wrong; AFAIK no other Fire Emblem game is available in any form to anybody who isn't a 3DS "ambassador" short of gambling on ebay, and I'd definitely recommend it to anybody who doesn't have access to any other version of the game. But, when graded on the Fire Emblem curve, it's a pretty poor game, and had I known what I was getting I would've went back and replayed Shadow Dragon instead.

Man you're always angry lol
I certainly don't mean to come off as angry. I would've been pissed off had I spent more than a few bucks on that DLC but luckily I tried it on a friend's game before I bought more than a few bucks worth myself and realized just how shallow and, well, sucky it was (before I figured I was just overleveled lol).

Just to be clear I think Fire Emblem Awakening is a fine game on it's own terms (DLC issues aside). It's like Mario, Zelda or Metroid; with few exceptions, even the worst of the series is better than most games on the market. But as a fan of the previous handheld games my expectations were sky high, and I don't think this game lived up to the previous entries we've received in America. And, at least to me, it feels like a lot of that was due to dumbing the game down and making it easier and trying to give it more mass appeal. I don't mind the addition of a casual mode that turns permadeath off (in fact I think it's a great idea), but the whole game itself just felt a lot easier than the past entries and the story was a lot duller. I was expecting a sort of semi-sequel to Shadow Dragon what with Marth being heavily featured, and I REALLY don't want to post any spoilers by discussing it, but the story was a letdown, and that's a big deal to me in almost any RPG.

I guess a good example I can post would be that I went through this game on my first playthrough without losing a single unit (no I wasn't playing the casual mode or grinding DLC lol). That's a first for me. I lost a few units in the original GBA game (despite the fact that I did do a little bit of arena grinding in that game) and around half my army in Shadow Dragon by comparison.

Assuming one never spends money on the DLC I think it's still an OK game, and like I said I would still recommend it to anybody who doesn't have access to any of the other Fire Emblem games. I just expect better than OK from Fire Emblem. That's really all I'm trying to say.

Okay... didn't like my first hour with the Bravely Default demo... BUT it's definitely got its hooks in me now. I'm particularly enjoying the sidegame community management feature you can play... yes, it's like a Facebook timed resource unlocking thing from those types of games SANS micro-transactions as far as I can tell, but it provides a neat addition to grinding on the top screen... plus as you build up that town, the people give you potions and such, and you can get better gear from the shops.

I'm having much more fun than I thought leveling up all the characters in every single job as I complete side quests.

TL;DR: Give the demo more than an hour before judging.

I played Fire Emblem Awakening, found it quite great, then tried the older GBA Fire Emblems and I swear I thought they were the sequels. It's amazing how much content was stripped out for Awakening.

It's also quite hard for me to start Awakening again. There's not a perfect difficulty level for me. Hard is much too easy and Lunatic is ridiculously insane on my own for the first five chapters.

If you just now played them I'm guessing you didn't even get to experience the whole game. The GBA and Shadow Dragon games came with multiplayer, and you could take Shadow Dragon online and fight against other players (hell maybe it's still up?). It's not about to replace Civilization by any means but it is a fun way to get a little extra out of the game and test yourself against other humans. I get that not everybody played it, but I still don't see why it was cut from Awakening. I'd prefer that over the shallow DLC anyday.

And if you are willing to invest in tracking down a GBA cart, I'd say it's really worth your while to track down Shadow Dragon. You do have to keep in mind that it's a remake of the original NES game (a true remake, not a prettied up port like Wind Waker HD that everyone calls a remake) and is missing certain features like the whole support levels nonsense, but I feel it really makes up for that in it's story and with how well the AI handles. It also went a long way in improving the interface that is used in Awakening. You could make a clear case for any of the older games, but Shadow Dragon is definitely my favorite.

Wish I could tell you, I haven't been able to pry it out of my wife's hands yet.

She says it's one of the best games she's ever played though, so we shall see soon enough.

That's interesting that you find Shadow Dragon the best Fire Emblem. Usually, people say Shadow Dragon is the weakest Fire Emblem game. I personally found it to be a great game (but to be fair, it was technically my first Fire Emblem game). Have you tried out the 12th one? There isn't a place to play a legitimate English language copy, but a group fan translated it if you're okay with playing on an emulator. It's a remake of the second Fire Emblem, if you didn't know. Pretty fun stuff.

I loved Awakening when I first played, but now I'm a little bit disappointed. It's still a great game, and I enjoyed the heck out of the 100+ hours I played of it and several playthroughs. The DLC is way too expensive, imo (buying all of them is more than the base game itself, IIRCC) The storyline was so-so, though a lot of the characters I really loved. Looking back at it now though, the game was much too easy. Hard wasn't super easy persay, but it wasn't altogether challenging once you knew what each map would throw at you. And Lunatic is just incredibly hard. I had to use a guide to just get past the first few chapters.

And then of course, the children (while amazing at first) are way too overpowered. I wish there was some sort of balance to have between them. It's a great feeling to pair up your units of parents to make super-children, but they were just too good. Maybe if in a future game, the story was completely split into two sagas of sorts where you play as the parents in the first saga, and then as the band of children in the second? Of course the problems with this are lack of consistent main character, inability to use your absolute favorite units throughout the entire story, and (if not made into an altogether longer game) the storylines of each would be short (10-13 chapters each). I dunno, overall the polish and thrill of playing a new Fire Emblem made it an amazing game, but it definitely had some shortcomings. Hopefully, we'll continue to see great things from Intelligent Systems.

Shadow Dragon was my favorite, but it was very close between it and the GBA games. Awakening is the only one I found truely lacking.

And I did calculate the price of the Fire Emblem Awakening DLC several months ago, although I am pretty sure more DLC has come since then. Not counting the first set (even though only 1 of those 3 maps were actually free for early adopters) you'd be spending a bit over $70 due to DLC to experience the full game IIRC. Combine that with the spotpass DLC and I'd say a GOTY edition is in order, but honestly I don't see Nintendo doing that when they've had so much success selling the DLC.

I'll try to check out Shadow Dragon at some point, but I'm having a blast with Awakening. I never particularly cared for this genre but it's turned out to be my favorite 3DS game. I'm not sure how I'll feel about going backward, though, since what I enjoy most about Awakening is its accessibility. I don't have time for all that stressful permadeath shit.

hope for some major deals today but i think there  is only 1 game coming out today with no sales

seems coming today for all systems

Wii U Virtual Console
Gradius (Konami, $4.99) — This arrived on the European Wii U Virtual Console in September 2013, and finally blasts its way to North America. The Konami shooter was integral in the evolution of side-scrolling shooters, while it's simple and lacks embellishments due to its origins in 1980s arcades. Despite showing its age a little, we still gave this a recommendation in our Gradius review.

Wii U Retail Download
Cocoto Magic Circus 2 (Bigben Interactive, $29.99)

3DS eShop
Chibi-Robo! Photo Finder (Nintendo, $9.99) — Confirmed during the last Nintendo Direct broadcast in 2013, this is a camera-based object-finding game bursting with character. We were very impressed with the Japanese version and look forward to trying it out in localised form — keep an eye out for our review soon.

3DS eShop Demo
Jump Trials Supreme (G-STYLE, free)

3DS eShop Temporary Discounts
Aqua Moto Racing 3D (Zordix AB, $4.49 until 23rd January, normally $5.99)

Darts Up 3D (EnjoyUp Games, $1.49 until 30th January, normally $2.99)

3DS Retail Download Temporary Discounts
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers (Atlus, $19.99 from 13th to 20th January)

Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan (Atlus, $19.99 from 13th to 20th January)

Code of Princess (Atlus, $19.99 from 13th to 20th January)

like i said mostly  NOTHING

I wouldn't necessarily call Shadow Dragon inaccessable, it is a remake of the original Fire Emblem game. And they did add in some new tutorials in the form of a prologue and start you out with a Cavalier champion, among some of the other changes they added inro the tutorials.

But yeah, it doesn't go easy on you and you can't disable permadeath, so if you are looking to breeze through it without resistance you've got another thing coming. Awakening is certainly more friendly for the casual gamer.

Does Soul Hackers have any Street Pass/Spot Pass features? Enjoyed that demon card exchanging bit in SMT IV.
Soul Hackers does support Street Pass. The following describes how the feature is implemented in the game (don't know if this qualifies as an actual spoiler or not):

There is a special shop you unlock that has its own unique currency. You acquire money for that store by either trading in some of the Play Coins you've earned or by Street Passing. That money can then be used to buy special demons.

After playing Awakening I wanted to play others, but they all were very expensive that I've seen. If I could find one that didn't cost $50+ then I might. For now I think I'm stuck with Awakening, but that's not a bad thing at all. Hopefully Nintendo will put older games on eShop.

Thanks bud. I'm one step closer to getting it now. #procrastination #backlogwoes

Those on their eshops? I would so buy the hell out of SMB3. And Metriod Fusion.
Woah, woah, woah. Let's go with baby steps here. A Link to the Past is on EU's Wii U eShop. There are no SNES games on the 3DS eShop and GBA hasn't been talked about it a while.

I do have Metroid Fusion on my 3DS due to the Ambassador stuff, which is the only way to have it at the moment.

A Link to the Past is also on the Wii Shop Channel.  I just finished playing through it a few months ago.  I don't understand the fervor over getting games we already have.
