Had the same problem.
Then I found this page, which discusses it in the context of my Linksys WRT54G router:

I didn't go through all the mess that guy did - all I simply did was go to the "Applications & Gaming" tab and enter my DS's assigned IP (got it from the log because I had connected to another town just before) to the DMZ entry. Then I got into Mirin's town first try after that - after having it not work like 15 times before! This is much better than turning off all the firewall and security stuff which would impact my computer...
 
Everyone getting the 86420 it has happend all day, Nintendowifi.com say that its a firewall thing. But today is the only day I have ever had a problem. I think they might not be able to support every now.

Is the Coelacanth rare? I caught one a couple of weeks ago.
 
FYI for people who let strangers into your town there are some people going around making your gate into a museum and then leaving shortly afterward. If this is done to you then you are screwed (or you can move out or something).

So be careful as to who you let into your town.

That happened to me with the String Fish during my first week of having the game. I caught 2 within a span of 30 minutes during my first experience with fishing in the game. I haven't seen one since.

How often does Blanca show up in your towns? She's really bugging the crap out of me, she's been showing up like 3-4 times a week, and I think it's making me miss some of the other visitors that stop by throughout the week.

You can shut her out by changing the settings at your "phone" when you first start up.
Instead of tapping on your character, tap the phone. The rest is history...
