Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Disclaimer: This list is intended to help all guide hunters. Please feel free to print yourself a copy and get what you can find. Please do not post this list on another site. {e-mail me please if for some reason you would want to. [email protected]} Please just link to this thread, add to this list and help it grow. Thank you

master list in post 2

If there's anyone who managed to get an extra of the Xenosaga II LE guides and would be intersted in trading, PM me -- I've got a pile of various other guides sitting around here that I'd be willing to trade (I'd really like to have a copy of the soundtrack).
k, that's what I thought. Shrike's comment a few posts back confused me. He was just gonna look for some already known. I thought he was lookin for new ones.

thanks.

Happy Hollidays!
Actually, that's exactly what I was going to do. One TRU I went to on Thursday had a complete mess of guides, and I wanted to know what was a penny before I went in there.

floormat, thanks for updating the posts with the lists, and if I find anything pennied, you'll get first crack.

I got an extra Radiata Stories guide today for Christmas - anyone need one? I am looking to trade it for another RPG guide. PM with an offer or shoot me your list. ^_^

Update: Just traded it, thanks to all of those who showed interest. ^_^

I was just at the GS in Baldwin Park. I found the last copy of XSGA II and I asked the guy to check the price. He scanned it 4 times and I said "It came up for a penny, huh?" He laughed and said yeah. At first he told me he wasn't sure if he could sell it. So he went to his manager and said I can keep it. I guess he didn't want my hard earned penny. :) I didn't see any MGS:Acid though. Would've been nice to have since I want to buy the game when it gets cheaper.

What do you guys/girls think of this game? I've heard mixed reviews about it and wouldn't mind getting it. If I decide to get the game, should I play part 1 first? I can always put it up for trade, dependinghow I feel.

It's probably worth getting if you can find it at TRU for $10. I just started the first one, and since I can already tell that the Xenosaga story is one convoluted... saga, I guess, you probably should play one first (like I'm doing). Incidentally I have an extra copy if you want to trade for it (I already have the Xenosaga II guide though).

Thanks for the offer but I'll pass. I got DDS from the TRU sale and I bought part 2, so I'm pretty much booked on RPG's for a while. Not to mention I still need to beat all of the other RPG's I've got this year.

Oops, I meant I have an extra Metal Gear Acid guide available for trade (though my TRU does have many extra copies of Xeonsaga II the game)

Hi, does anyone know if Fry's electronics does the pennying of guides? The one my friend told me about in Palo Alto, CA has a massive selection. Some like, GTA:SA were pennied pretty much everywhere else, but he didn't ask them. They seriously have a lot, from Madden 2004 to some of the rarer ones, I think.

Dont bother as I already checked most of the bay area fry's. They mark down their some of their guides to about $10, but many are still at full price.

Hehe no prob. I'll let you know about that one. I have a couple more GS's to check out first. How much is the XSGA II at your TRU btw?

$9.99 since it was a hold over from the green tagged sale.

I have a Xenosaga II Limited Edition guide (missing the soundtrack CD) for trade if anyone is interested. Check my list for any other guides you may want.

Sam Goody:
- Prince of Persia: Sands of Time - $1.88

EBGames:
- Star Ocean: Till The End of Time - $17.99
- XIII - $14.99
- Xenosaga II - $16.99

Why did XIII and Xenosaga II come up at those prices? Aren't they supposed to be $0.01?

I got the XSGA II guide at GS. Maybe it's only GS? Also I heard it has to be the limited edition to be a cent.

I was wondering if Borders Bookstore has any price drops on their guides because I went there today and saw Prince of Persia - Sands of time guide and I remember that this guide price dropped last year at a lot of places but Borders still has it at full price(although I didn't double check at the register)

They also have some nice guides that are not being printed anymore.

Highly unlikely. Bookstores know better than to sell books for a .01.

I was at Best Buy today and noticed a lot of reduced prices on guides, e.g. Rainbow Six lockdown and Ninja Gaiden Black (both of which were good candidates for penny status last time round!) were priced at $6.99, there were others for $10 and $12 etc. Does this mean it'll just be reductions instead of pennying at BB from now on? Anyway, 1st Monday of the month is coming up, which means its time to see if anything has been pennied there.

God forbid you actually buy them for what they're worth.

I got Haunting Ground and if I decide to keep it, I was wondering if the strat guide has gotten cheaper. I don't mind if it's not a penny, but I don't want to pay full price for it.
God forbid you actually buy them for what they're worth.
naw, I only buy guides at full price if I really want it which is not very offen.

I do wish though that I could be one of the first to recognize a price drop in my area and be the first to claim some guides for .01.
God forbid you actually buy them for what they're worth.
Not such a smart comment to say on CAG^_-.
Anyway, the only guide I bought at full price was GTA San Andreas because the manager at the EB promised me one of those bandannas that they had extras of, plus some other cool free stuff (lots of demos) but I really had to go to the bathroom. Went, came back and bought one, then he screwed me and didn't give me anything
God forbid you actually buy them for what they're worth.
I agree that sometimes it's a good idea to pay a reasonable price for products so that everyone involved can make a small profit and still be there next year when I want to buy something. However, few of these guides are "worth" $15. They're overgrown magazines riddled with typos designed as nearly pure-profit up-sells. If the retail price of these guides were closer to $7 or even $10, I'd probably buy a lot more of them. I ordered quite a few from Brady Games through their recent clearance, and I have no doubt that they still made a profit on me.
My guide collection would drop from about 300 to 20 if I had done that.
Hell, mine would be zero!

Sorry if it's been posted and I know it's not a penny but I just came back from my EB and they said thery're going to have a buy one get other for 50% off deal on all strat guides.

Bump for possible penny goodness at Best Buy tomorrow (or later in the week). Check out the guide section if you're in there, the usual suspects are : Rainbow six lockdown, Mortal Kombat shaolin monks, Ninja gaiden black, and of course, Halo 2. Of course they didn't drop any guides in December so it may not happen this time either.

i take all my penny guides noone wants over to a game shop that give 2-4 bucks credit for them... Trade in 10 guides get at least 20 bucks ... pick up either a mid range PS2 game or GBA game

not bad getting a game for 10 cents

i havent got any new guides for probally 6 months.. no room for them

Try making a tradelist. You would do a lot better than a lousy $20.

I know that the list is kind of old now but I went to Best Buy today because I saw some guides there that were on the list. Expecting them to be .01 I was shocked.

Ninja Gaiden Black was 9.99
Rainbow Six Lockdown was also 9.99
Driv3r was still listed at regular price of 14.99

now, does Best Buy up the prices again after awhile or is some of the guides on this list wrong and not .01???

WOOHOO!! found a xenosaga limited edition guide today. Checked about 5 EB's when it was originally pennied there and have been in others since (always check for penny guides) and never found one. Checked 4 or 5 gamestops the day after it was pennied out and a few others since and found none. Today I was heading to portsmouth, nh and, since I had go by the seabrook, nh gamestop I figured I'd stop there and check out the ps1 games (they often have some hard to find stuff). I go there and I noticed a xenosaga limited guide at the bottom of the wire shelf (resting upright on the floor) and grabbed it. Wasn't even thinking about it when I walked in. Employee seemed shocked that that guide had been pennied out.

These are pennied out nationwide, correct? I went to an EB to pick up what I thought was a penny guide and it was still $19.99.

Then I went to the nearby Gamestop and tried to pick up Makai Kingdom and Genji. One of them was $15 down from the cover price of $20 while the other normal price; I usually have a good bullshit detector, but I couldn't tell if the clerk was serious or not.

Off topic for a moment, but does anyone have a Super Mario Sunshine guide they would trade or sell me? ^_^ And I know there has to be a penny guide somewhere in our horizons! TRU and BB are just piled high with guides in my town.

Seriously, my TRU has them filled to the brim in the strat guide case they have, plus has a few piles of them sitting in front of that. Too bad I missed out on the last one, as they had TONS of DMC3s, but by the time I got there they were either bought or pulled.
EB Games just pennied out SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI: NOCTURNE & Phatom Brave Strategy Guides!! I snagged one Nocture.
I'm gonna try to jump on this asap then

Hot damn! Those would make most excellent trader fodder...now finding them in-store and before the other Upper NW WA CAGs buy 'em all up, hehe.

does anyone have an extra xenosaga 2 limited edition for trade? my list is not updated so please send me a pm. i will make it worth your while. thanks!

I went to the EB at Glenbrook today. I happened to find in the guides a copy of Xenosaga Ep 1. I was supprised to see that. The guy said it was full price. Was he telling the truth or was it pennied out and he lied about it? I thought that was pennied out a while ago.

Gamestop has dropped some(or perhaps all) of it's Doublejump guides to $9.99 if anyone's interested. The 3 pictured in the in-store ad display were Genji, Makai Kingdoms and Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrows but the caption just mentioned Doublejump (so if anyone finds a Disgaea, be sure to check.)

Not quite a penny but I've really been wanting the Castlevania: DoS guide for a while and so was happy to snag one today.

Nice... I have $5 leftover credit at Gamestop, wasn't sure what to use it on... might as well get myself a Genji guide for $5. Damn, I remember when that Castlevania guide was $19.99... $10 is a steal.

Thanks for the heads up, the Genji guide is the only Doublejump guide I don't have, I really love their work.

I tell you what though, they really need to get on the ball about getting some new work though... their guides are few and far between, either they are really picky about what guides they do (but Genji? Cmon now) or Prima / Brady snatch up every game.
