Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Disclaimer: This list is intended to help all guide hunters. Please feel free to print yourself a copy and get what you can find. Please do not post this list on another site. {e-mail me please if for some reason you would want to. [email protected]} Please just link to this thread, add to this list and help it grow. Thank you

master list in post 2
Maybe because there really isn't that much info in it, this SoC guide is really a beautiful book. Really nice art and sprinkled with production sketches throughout.

It's one of the Brady Signature Series . . . on these you usually get your penny's worth :)
I was really surprised with how great Ultimate Spider-Man was... lots of kick ass artwork in it, I expected a really shitty guide to be honest, and was pleasantly surprised.
Yeah, IMO Brady seems to do a waaayyyy better job than Prima.

BTW, who has Kingdom Hearts CoM pennied out?
Best Buy pennied it out quite a while ago but you may get lucky.

I did pretty well today, I went out and picked up guides for:

Soul Calibur III
Shadow of the Colossus
Metal Gear Acid
Myst IV
Myst V
Myst Uru
F.E.A.R.
Forza Motorsport
Mercenaries
The Bard's Tale
Sigma Star Saga / Rebelstar: Tactical Command
Doom 3
Quake 4
Timesplitters: Future Perfect

I'm willing to trade pretty much all of them, except maybe for the Mysts. Looking for the thick ol' Metal Gear Solid 3 LE guide, as well as Half-Life 2: Raising the Bar.

I finally found some penny guides! The Best Buy manager seemed very grateful that I was buying these.

I picked up:

The Warriors
Ratchet: Deadlock
Jak X
True Crime New York City

All are up for trade of course.
I'm looking for Soul Calibur 3 and SOTC

I talked with Roufuss, and I think he's going to try and get you one tomorrow.

I was at the Hickory Hollow (Nashville, TN) BB at closing, and they still had multiples of all the new penny guides, except Ninja Gaiden Black. Many of the guides had shelf tags showing 1c, but they didn't bother retagging the guides themselves. The PGR3 guide was in the 360 aisle kiosk, instead of the main guide section. The 1c sign for Battlefield 2 was under the wrong Battlefield 2 guide, but they had several of the one that actually is a penny.

Still looking for GTA SA and GT4 if you have either PM me. I just about have all the current bb guides including a mint factory sealed ratchet deadlock. I also have full spectrum warrior from tru.
Sorry, those were from my EB 40 guide haul (no duplicates).

The new Viewtiful Joe?! Thank you, sir!! :)
Yeah, my eyes popped when I saw it . . . its a guide for both the new DS and GC games . . . I'm going to try to get another today for trade. My haul was fantastic but I would have preferred half the guides with doubles for trade . . . If I have only one, I tend to want to keep it.

I visited one EB on the way home last night, and was told they'd ripped the covers off the guides, but they were still in the back. I asked about a couple things, so he goes to look and comes back saying they'd already tossed the garbage today. Long story short - I've joined the ranks of those who will dumpster dive for guides. They were right on top, thankfully, and cushioned by a vast amount of bagged paper garbage. I was very glad the Jimmy John's and Dunkin Donuts right next door hadn't emptied their garbage yet for the night. I pulled out all 50 some guides. Other than missing their covers, they aren't any worse for their brief dumpster time.

On another note, the nearest Best Buy still had a few penny PC guides lying around - D&D Dragonshard, Empire Earth II, City of Heroes and Half-Life 2. Some of these dropped over 3 months ago! Must not be too many CAGs looking this Best Buy over very well.

Sounds like EB/GS is starting to get more on a ball about that stuff - a store I usually could get them from told me that they had to rip off the covers too. Now if only they could just give out the guides after that, instead of wasting them.

Here, it's the exact opposite. After never finding a drop at EB / GS since I've been reigstered on this site, I managed to find big scores at no less then three EB's, who just gave me the guides (covers intact) once I found them on the shelf.

Going to check out three more EB's (all in a 10 minute radius, how conveinent) hoping to find some big scores.

Is my EB the only one that regularly keeps all the guides in the back? They only have about 5-10 guides on display on a rack secured to the counter.

For the most part I have had no luck at EB and GS. However, I did score a Psychonauts and a Mercenaries at EB, which has always refused to sell them. The manager of the store let me have them after I acknowledged that I was willing to pay full price for Psychonauts (in this case I really was, since they're discontinuing the guide and it's tougher to find). At gamestop last night, I was a bit bolder, and asked for Conker and Urban Reign guides because I didn't see them on the rack. The guy was nice enough to go to the back and get them for me. I appreciated his kindness and bought the games as well from him (they went down in price to 19.99 recently) ...I then tried to push my case when I saw about 30 guides behind the counter, and I asked if I could have a couple of those as well. He refused and said they were for his store manager...I just let it go at that point.
Is my EB the only one that regularly keeps all the guides in the back? They only have about 5-10 guides on display on a rack secured to the counter.
One of the EB's in a mall in a town over does this too... it is the smallest EB I've ever been to, they don't have space to display the guides, so you're supposed to ask them what guide you want and they check the computer to see if they have it.

I just skip that mall entirely for penny guides.

Is anyone elses Gamestop alot stricter then EB? GS seems to pull guides extremely fast around here, every single GS does this, but it seems EB is more lax about this.

I think its related in my case. The GameStop next to EB here has a full rack of guides, and according to the guy there, that's all they have. All the penny guides are pulled from that one. As a result of EB having all their guides in the back, they don't "pull" anything, it's already out of sight. Just dependent upon if the employee wants to give them to me or not. And I know the employee to look for.

I went back to my BB to check for a few things and they pulled all the guides. One of the employee's recognized me as the one who was always coming in for pennied guides and showed me the shopping cart where they moved all the penny guides too so people could find em easier.

Big thumbs up for my best buy :)

I built a fort out of all the penny guides I got in the last couple days :)

I went to an EB the other day where I know one of the guys. He let me pick any of the stuff that was getting tossed that I wanted so I got about 10 guides there. Then I went to two different Gamestops on Monday where they had a pile of guides just sitting out on the floor. One let me buy what I wanted for a penny, the other one said they had already been cleared out of the system and I could take a few if I wanted. Then finally last night I hit a Best Buy and got like 16 guides for a penny a piece that were marked on the shelf as such.
I haven't had such a massive penny guide haul since back in the days I worked at Gamestop :)
Sounds like EB/GS is starting to get more on a ball about that stuff - a store I usually could get them from told me that they had to rip off the covers too. Now if only they could just give out the guides after that, instead of wasting them.
Really depends on the ones you go to. One of my EB's keeps all guides in the back so I skip that one. A store in the mall has about 200+ guides out which is a goldmine for me. They have no problems selling em for a penny. Last time i went I snagged 50+ guides.

Will be going this friday to check em out since last time i went there I found guides that were pennied out months ago and they still had copies of Phantom Brave, Genji, and even a Baten Kaitos which went in my collection.

I'll be going back to Best Buy at lunch or after work for the rest of the penny guides that I didn't pick up (only had a list of guides I wanted to keep yesterday). If they haven't cleared them out yet, I will return with:

Battlefield 2 Xbox
City of Heroes
Jak X
Matrix Path of Neo
Ratchet Deadlocked
Shadow of the Colossus
The Warriors
THAW
Ultimate Spiderman
Spartan Total Warrior

Will probably only pick up one or two of each for trade unless I get some advance requests.

I'm going to consider going back to EB if I see the same guy working there to try to get a few other guides to keep. Thinking about going with the "My friend mentioned you might have more guides that were out of the system now in addition to the two I got yesterday..."
Should these penny guides be a penny at GameCrazy's too?
Gamecrazy pennys there as well but i have no way to acquire them or information locally. several people confirmed they do this though. Blockbuster does as well so likely gamerush does too. Unfortuantely we have no informants at those stores for this thread. If you can help us please do. Thank you.

My wife used to work at Blockbuster, but they're a bit more diligent about cleaning out their racks. She was actually offered some guides at one point, but said 'no' (silly wife) as she could not see the use for them. She has been groomed by me more recently on their value (at least to me). So, yeah, it happens, but unless we get knowledgeable CAGs or informants in those places, we'll keep missing out.

I have had no luck what so ever getting penny guides at my EB. Hastings here has a crap load of awesome new and old guides, but they are never a penny or on sale.

What do you guys say to the EB employee's to help you grab the penny guides? I could really use some tips here. I read this thread in complete jealousy.

If anyone wants to cash in making magnitudes of profit off me I am looking for these guides and will pay reasonable/fair amount for them since I am frustrated and want the blasted guide:

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Wave Race Blue Storm
Animal Crossing (GCN and/or DS)
Castlevania: Lament of Innocence
Castlevania: Curse of Darkness
Any newer Nintendo Guide

What I have:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
...sadly that is it.

Theese guides arent pennied out right?

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Wave Race Blue Storm

good luck

Dammit! My EB boxed up the remainder of their penny guides, as they told me they had to send them to Barnes & Noble (who I guess owns them now?) for them to resell. Has anyone else heard this? I was able to get 2 copies of MMZ4 (1 is for trade if anyone wants) though. Why isn't there are a separate thread in the trading forum just for penny guides? I'm sure that would be useful to everyone here.

Not all of them, but I expect the ones that aren't will be soon.

I know Sacred Stones is and Castlevania DoS is either a penny or on sale. Wave Race is old, so if anyone has one they picked up for a penny, I want it. Animal Crossing for GC was, but is old again. The Castlevania LoI I thought was. Fire Emblem PoR and Animal Crossing DS might be too new, but since we don't find out until someone updates here, we don't know.

I don't know if this is something new, but I have seen in the past the outlet stores for Borders and B&N have strategy guides. This was quite a few years ago, though.

Barnes and Noble owns GameStop so they own EB as of the merger.

Fire Emblem: PoR isn't a penny, neither is Animal Crossing DS... you're right, both are too new.

I price checked a Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow at EB yesterday and it came up full price, $19.99.

Btw, I struck gold slightly. I stopped by the Great Northern BB and I picked up guides for Ultimate Spider-Man, Ninja Gaiden Black, 007 From Russia with Love, and Soul Caliber III. I stopped by the Gamestop nearby and the manager of the store said that they had to send of the guides back to their headquarters.

That's funny. I searched this thread and checked the front page. It was listed on sale for $9.99 then I believe it was later listed at a penny. Perhaps it was only EB.

Well, I'm pretty sure the dude wasn't lying to me, since he let me take about 20 other penny guides and didn't seem the least bit interested (I mean, he let me take both copies of the HL 2 artbook)... Makai Kingdom came up a penny, I tried for Dawn of Sorrow since I know some people were interested, but nope, full price.

I was kinda surprised... this happened at an EB too, I've never seen the guide at GS recently enough to check.

Actually, it's listed as 'on sale' for 9.99 at gamestop (verified last night). I didn't check if it was a penny though.

Are there different kinds of Half Life 2 guides, or is the Raising the Bar one the only one? I'm pretty sure I saw an HL2 on the rack at EB last night when I was there but didn't even think about it.

There is a Half Life 2 actual guide, and then there is Raising The Bar, which is a hardcover art book that is all white and a litlte bit bigger then your normal guide.

Alright, then I think that was just the regular guide. No loss.

The regular HL2 should be pennied out as well. Thats from a while back.

HL2: Raising the Bar is a book about how they made HL2 with a lot of art and info. It's pretty nice. There is a lot of art from the first drawings to the final product. The guide was pennied out a while back.

Mine was a BB with actual .01 stickers put on the covers...

Picked up the other day (for trade):

Battlefield 2
Ninja Gaiden Black
PGR 3
Soul Calibur 3
The Warriors

Also saw (and can pick up for trade):
007 From Russia With Love
Jak X Combat Racing w/DVD
NBA WhoCares '06
Pokemon Emerald
Ratchet: Deadlocked w/DVD
Ultimate Spider-man

I went to pick up Pokemon Emerald guide and Advance Wars: Dual Strike guide at an EB games that often has penny guides available. My son had just gotten those 2 games for Xmas and I thought it would be great if I picked up the guides now that they were a penny. I found the guides and brought them up to the counter. The girl scanned one, looked at it funny and tried to scan the other UPC code, then she moved on to the other guide. When both came up a penny, she asked the guy next to her for help. He said the UPCs "must be messed up" in the system and proceeded to adjust the prices to the full price. I said "how much" and he said "$14.99 which is the price on the label." I said "My son told me they were on sale". He said "The Brady guides are buy 1 get the second for 50% off - these are Nintendo Power - they're full price." I told the guy that I didn't want them and left. I'll have to try another store or a different time...
