Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.




Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. I've done pretty well but I haven't gotten any of the really spectacular finds. I'll list them all alterand what I have to trade.

I just ahd top mention though that I hit up the EB at teh concord mall and I thought I hit the motherload. Dual Stike, Batallion Wars, genji, Phantom Brave, a ton of great stuff. I brought it up to the counter and unfortunately, the guy wouldn't sell it to me. He apologized but I told him he had no need to. I can't force him to sell them for a penny.

Alternatively, at another EB on the Kirkwood Highway, they just gave the guides to me.
 
I have a couple Shadow of the Colossus guides, a 007: From Russia with Love and a Spartan: Total Warrior guide available for trade (among many other guides in my trade list) if anyone is interested. My big wants are Rome: Total War and Rome: Barbarian Invasion but I'll check lists. Thanks.

If anyone can confirm that City of Heroes (that big ol binder) and Black and White 2 are pennied, I'll go pick up one and two respectively so I have those up for trade.

Not sure if I got shot down at EB, or if they were out of Zelda: 4 Swords and Timesplitters: Future Perfect. Asked if they had them, looked in the computer, and said no. But it took them a while so he may have found them in there for a penny (if they show up as such without being scanned?) and said no. There was also some old dude sitting in a chair there, perhaps the DM or somebody, so that may have contributed to it. Otherwise I would have pushed my whole list across the counter. I'll try again later this week and/or hit up another EB. Still need to try my Gamestop again, just for shits and giggles.

They show up as a penny without being scanned... I had a guy look up Shining Tears for me (before I found it), and he confirmed to me that when I found it, it would be a penny.

I had the City of Heroes guide in the big binder scanned on Tuesday at BB and it rang up at $19.99. Didn't see any other penny PC guides, so I'm guessing that if a City of Heroes guide was pennied out, it was something other than the binder. (oddly enough they did have most of the console guides still out, though)

Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap - Nintendo

And a bunch of other older guides that were pennied out months ago.
 
There wasn't really a media mail increase, was there? First class went up a few pennies a pound, priority went up like 30 cents a pound...even if there was an increase...it would be something like 10 cents extra on a 3 pound box of guides. I sent out a box of 5 Nintendo games today and it was around $2 for Media Mail. Box weighed around the same as 2-3 guides.
 
Just an FYI for anyone in the NYC area - DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT support the EB store in Union Square. The people there are complete asses. I was there tonight, had a bunch of penny guides in my hand (all of the ones I need too, like Viewtiful Joe Red Hot Rumble, MMBN5, HL2 artbook, etc.) and they literally took them from me, saw they were a penny, and threw them in the garbage right in front of me! The girl there has always been a beyotch, and the guy was telling me that this was their "corporate policy". I even offered them money for the guides and they wouldn't accept it. I told them that not only lost out on a sale but they just lost a customer. The guy next to me thought it was unbelievable that they could just throw this stuff right in front of me. So anyway, don't shop there!

If they threw them in the garbage, i wouldve grabbed them and left. Guy next to you could testify that they had no interest in the guides since he trashed them ;p
 
Does anyone have any idea when the next ToysRUS drop is. I stopped by the local store, and the section was very neat for once. The guides were in great shape instead of the usual wrinkled mess. Looking forward to the next drop (assuming I get a new person at the counter that will let me have them).

Benboxer usually does them... he's been MIA lately though. TRU usually drops price on Thursdays, if I recall.

God of War still hasn't dropped there, same with Conker, so I'm holding out for that one.
 
I don't know about you guys but I have cr@ppy luck when it comes to guides. I went to GS and found a few of the titles on the list but they were still 14.99 ( Black hawk Down for example). Oh well, maybe I'm going about this wrong. Is it like used ones or new guides?

You might be checking the wrong list for GS - it can be confusing since each store with recent drops has different guides that pennied out. There's some overlap at EB/GS but not completely (strange since GS just recently made EB change its game prices to match their own.)

Did the guide ring up at $14.99 at the cashier counter or was that the price on the book itself?
 
I wish I had started following penny guides a long time ago. I generally don't care to buy guides, but they're fun to have around for free. Too bad I ignored this thread for a good 6 months.

I would've done that, but the garbage was behind the counter and inaccessible. I was tempted to jump over and grab the guides out with the attitude they were giving me, but I resisted :) I couldn't actually believe they were throwing away a hardcover artbook. For shame!

i feel your pain...i've hardly ever entered this thread and/or gave much thought to penny guides...reason being, i assumed employees/stores would give me too much of a hard time and i'd be disappointed...for the most part, i was wrong...90% of the employees/stores have been more than helpful and polite with these penny guides

Today was the best (out of my three or four attempts at getting guides):

BB cashier: "Your total is a whopping nine cents!"
Me: "I have a dime!"

The poor fool behind me with a purchase weighing about one percent of mine probably paid about 1000 times what I did ;)

I got penny guides (not too many) at BB before I knew about CAG (snagged Ico over 3 years ago). And it is a shame that you missed out on this thread.

You're right, they are fun. As someone else said a few pages back . . . they are like trading cards.

This has become my favorite thread.

Haha, that happened to me a few days ago at BB... I got about 10 guides, came up to a dime, and the dude behind me was like "wow what the hell, that's like 100 bucks in guides, OMG!!!"

I tried this a while ago and grabbed 10 guides on the list and brought them up to the register, all full price. The guy said a lot of time they miss penny guides so it seemed like he had no problem giving them to me if they genuinely were a penny. That experience though made me ignore this threat for months before trying again.

Just so everyone knows, Castlevania: DS is NOT PENNIED at gamestop.

I found one today and checked. It rings up for 15.00. I almost picked it up anyways since it is such a rediculously nice guide, but I've almost beaten the game, so there's not much point paying that much for something I don't need.

I charged .05 cents once. I was at gamestop and forgot to grab some change out of my car before going into the mall, and the clerk didn't give them to me for free. A few other times I would have had to charge them, but the clerk just gave them to me when I said "it's times like this I wish I had change" and went to pull out my CC.

When I find guides @ BB, I tend to pay via credit card, just to stiff them out of the 1.5% Visa charges then. :D

I went to the BB by my work today and wasn't expecting much because last time they did this, they had advertisements all over the store. There was no ad, and I began to get as many as I wanted. I brought it up to the clerk and she thought I was some hardcore fanatic. Then she found out how much they were and was amazed. In total I spent .21$ I bought duplicates for future trades and to give to my friends. I plan on going back and picking up a couple I didn't think were .01$.
 
I went by my BB on Monday and got plenty of guides. The girl said she was told before they couldn't sell .01 guides and had to ask. I thought for sure I would be denied but someone told her to go ahead and sell them. I went back today to get a couple I missed and they were all gone. Not just the .01 guides--every single guide on the rack. There wasn't a single guide for any game to be found anywhere. I didn't even bother to ask what happened. I just hope that girl didn't get fired.

does the Matrix games suck or something because the last two guide price drops I have paided attention to it seems like the only guides I get are Matrix.

I got a number a guides about a year ago but was able to get about 6 Enter the Matrix guides.

Now, a couple of days ago the only guides they had left after I heard they dropped prices at Best Buy were Matrix the path of Neo. Got about 5 of them.

then today I found out that Matrix Online was also dropped and still after 4 days they still had 1 copy.

Do people not really like the Matrix games or something?

Not penny guides, but I went to kb and found shenmue and tekken tag tournament for 49 cents, and yoshi's story and sonic adventure for 99 cents. Was shocked to see them there, especially yoshi's story. If anyone wants sonic adventure, tekke tag, shenmue, madden 2001, wwf wrestlemania or driver 2 guides I can get them. They had doubles of everything except yoshi's story (which I'm keeping) and driver 2.

Good day for finds overall. Non game related, but I also found a 22.99 dollar bottle of wine at wild oats that said 2.99. The first part of the sticker was ripped off (which is why it said 2.99 not 22.99) and there were no more and no way to tell the price so they gave it to me for 3 bucks. Went home and found it should have been 23 and it was rated extremely well by wine websites.
