Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Disclaimer: This list is intended to help all guide hunters. Please feel free to print yourself a copy and get what you can find. Please do not post this list on another site. {e-mail me please if for some reason you would want to. [email protected]} Please just link to this thread, add to this list and help it grow. Thank you

Go look back a number of pages, and yes, indeed he has. And has inspired at least one other CAG to do the same.
have you actually went dumpster diving and found guides?
I haven't gone searching for dumpsters - but at one EB they told me they were in the paper-only dumpster behind the store so i went diving and found a big box full of guides and other EB goodies sitting on top.
Note that all the guides still were complete with covers - so it really was a waste, not a "lets send covers back to publisher for credit" type deal.
CC hasn't pennied out guides in 2 years, maybe longer. Considering how old that guide is it's probably just been hanging around in a store that's not kept up at all.

I checked SSX 3 w/in the last 2 months and it was $8 or $9 still.
I nabbed a Sid Meier's Pirates guide last week for $1.96. They had a heck of a time ringing it up, as it said it could only be purchased as part of a package, so eventually they just charged me $1.96 in labor.
have you actually went dumpster diving and found guides?
I have also braved the dumpster, and found it not that bad.

In the last round of drops, my nearby EB said they still had them in the back, but when he went to grab them, they were gone. He said they must have gone out that morning. So I drove around back and scooped up about 60 guides. They were all sitting on top, on a layer of other bagged paper garbage, and it thankfully hadn't been raining. There were some duplicates (about 10 Doom 3 guides) and all of them were missing the covers. But after sorting through everything, I ended up with 29 new guides in my collection.

just picked up darkwatch, destroy all humans, men of valor:vietnam, ncaa football 2006 and mech assault 2: lone wolf for a penny each at best buy. lemme know if anyone wants to trade any other guides for it!

You're probably remembering me . . . I said I would have dived in, if I had seen some guides in the dumpster.

Back when the Zelda Collector's Ed. guide was pennied at TRU, I couldn't get there for a few days and then the worker said they were probably tossed . . . I drove around to the back but couldn't access the dumpster (it was closed from within).

I would have swam in TRU garbage to get that baby.

Cool. I guessed I missed that one. I'll check all of the guides again on Friday.

Which guide is it, the Xbox or the PC one?

Is dumpster diving legal? Can I get a in trouble with the police or get fined? I fear this is my only way to get these guides.

I went to gamestop today and they told me the 7 guides I had in hand were supposed to be destroyed and they took them from me and even the manager said the only way I would get them is if I paid fullprice otherwise they would be taking the guides and destroying them right then.

I came back 5 hours later and the guides were back on the sale rack.

How dare they lie to me. They wont sell guides pennied out and claim they are supposed to destroy them (which they are unless a customer gets them first) but then after telling me they would destroy them they put them BACK on the shelf?

I am considering contacting their corporate offices.

What you should do instead is go in again when the manager is working, bring the same guides up the counter and start tearing them up. If they give you any trouble remind him that these are the guides that should be destroyed and you're just helping out, but of course you're happy to pay for them - then fork over the 7 cents. :) After that, leave and be sure to kick over the magazine rack on the way out.

Try this magic formula...buy something else with the strategy guides. I've met some pretty grouchy guys working in video game stores...but they usually want to make a sale...so if you're actually spending money on a game and not just paying a few pennies for some guides, then they're more likely to try to keep you happy. If not, then you walk out and don't buy whatever you were going to pick up (cheap game or whatever). This usually trains them to be nicer in the future.

yeah...i made the mistake of assuming it was the xbox version when doing a trade with another CAG (forget who actually) and then realized it was the PC version when I received the package in the mail...i wasn't mad at the person I traded with because it wasn't his fault (i actually didn't even mention it to the CAG because I didn't want him to feel bad), but i was mad at myself...that said, i have a PC verison up for trade

Was there even a separate guide made for the Xbox version?

Also - Rictor's plan would work much better than mine to actually get those guides. Try it when the original guy you dealt with isn't around - maybe it's just him. A lot of clerks are indifferent to penny guides - if you're polite about it while buying something else, they will sell/give them away even if someone else at the same store rejected you. Doesn't hurt to give it a shot if they're still on the rack.
Was there even a separate guide made for the Xbox version?
Theoretically, yes, there should have been an Xbox version, since the gameplay between the PC and Xbox version is different in some ways, besides the control scheme.

Personally, the only one I've seen has been the PC version, though I thought to check, just in case it was worth trying to find it.

I was buying DS game cases when they refused to sell me the guides. Sure it wasnt much but it wasnt like I was only trying to get the guides from em (I was actually also there mainly to find a good case that would allow me to put all my ds games in a central location) Sadly though there arent big cases that hold a lot of DS games like yo ucan get for CD/DVD based games. I can get little casses for up to 4 games maybe 8 at a time but I have 99 DS games so those little cases are meaningless to me.

I just got back from a Best Buy and was able to get some guides. Stuff I obtained:

Rome Total War: Barbarian Invasion
NBA Live 06
Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne
Dungeons & Dragons: Dragonshard.

The only one I really care about out of that pile is the Warcraft guide. To my dismay all the guides I actually wanted a lot were all gone. The spot were there used to be at least 50 game guides is now empty. :(

Trash is public property. Unless that trash is on private property and not on the curb, then it's all legal to take whatever you want (Just don't make a mess and spill garbage everywhere).

The PC Sid Meier's Pirates! guide was pennied at BB Monday - October 3, 2005. Is the last one on the list for the Xbox version (If it exist)?

my Best Buy sucks because they barely carry any guides when they used to carry so many.

I think they might have 1 copy of NBA Live 06 but I just got back from there and too lazy to drive out there again.

I didn't know it was pennied out.

i have no desire for the guides i got but i went because i knew they carried them, and maybe YOU want one.....let me know

Star Wars Galaxies Total Experience and Jump to Lightspeed
Rome Total War
Medal of Honor Pacific Assault
Also already have Warcraft 3 Frozen throne from when it dropped before up for trade.
Holy crap! You're that guy from Gamefaqs who has nearly every DS game!
 Niiiice
So when does BB penny out guides? I remember someone saying the 1st monday of every month or something.
That's usually when it is. Get there ASAP since some stores are really militant about pulling the guides while some are pretty slack about it.
How long do you guys give it till the Radiata Stories and DQ8 guides drop?
At EB / GS, it will be a long time... they usually penny out guides awhile after the game has been out (I mean, they just pennied out Shining Tears!!).

Best Buy should penny out DQ 8 in a few months, though.

Picked up at BB today

Matrix Path of Neo
Star Wars Galaxies: Jump to Lightspeed
Star Wars Galaxies: The Total Experience
Dark Age of Camelot: Catacombs
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War
Rome Total War: Barbarian Invasion
Praetorians

Is it even legal for a store to sell a pennied out guide at full price? Haven't they already received credit from the publisher for all unsold guides, which is why the stores are supposed to destroy them? I don't think Prima or Brady would like to know that stores are still making profit off guides which they already gave the store credit for.

They don't get credit until they send the cover back. The penny is really just used to indicate that they shouldn't sell them.

Yah, that's assuming they buy them on a returnable basis with the lower discount, which would make sense. If you buy magazines, strategy guides, books, etc. with a return option, you get a 20-30% discount off retail for whatever you sell, then you strip the covers and send back what you don't sell so you don't get charged for it.

If you buy them on a non-returnable basis, you get 50-60% off retail but if they don't sell then you're stuck with them. I think Best Buy might be on the nonreturnable discount tier because they tend to actually mark the guides at a penny and sell them around here.

Occasionally, companies may not ask for the stripped covers but will take the store's word for inventory, but this is rare and usually only applies to damaged items. In our comic stores we buy magazines and books on a returnable basis so I'm pretty familiar with returning stripped covers. If some one tosses it without stripping the cover then we get charged on the next invoice. If we don't return the covers within the time window the company requires them, then we get charged. So if a store leaves strategy guides out for a month or two after they're pennied, there's no way they're getting a refund even if they are on the stripped cover program.

As an aside, distributor accounts for books and magazines aren't that hard to get. Anyone who can do around $500 a month in retail sales and has some sort of brick and mortar presence (usually even a flea market booth will work) can get an account and receive goods at a discount. Finding video games wholesale is a little harder and the discount sucks.

Just got back from two Best Buy's, here's my haul:

Star Wars Galaxies: The Complete Experience (lol why did I buy this)
Rome: Total War Barbarian expansion x 2
Dawn of War x 3 (didn't see this on anyone's list yet)
The Sims 2: University (ditto... this guide is actually a guide for University, plus it has the ENTIRE GUIDE for Sims 2 as well).
Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault
Half Life 2 PC (old drop)
GTA: San Andreas (old drop)
LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth (old drop)

Whats funny is that the first Best Buy they were all marked .01... last time the employees swore up and down that once the guides hit .01, they couldn't be sold, they were destroyed, corporate will punish them if the books are sold. Today, they are all marked .01 and on the shelf.

Second BB had nothing except some older guides that I nabbed. Not sure where that GTA: SA guide came from, but I snagged it.

Did some price checks - Vampire The Masqurade: Bloodlines is still $19.99, so is Morrowind.... Oblivion will be out before Morrowind's guide drops in price
I saw a regular Sims 2 guide for PC, didn't do a price check, anyone know if this is also pennied out (since the newer guide, University, is pennied).

That Sims 2: University guide is NICE... clocks in at 450 pages, definately impressed.

Does anyone if its regular Xenosaga 2 thats pennied at EB, and not the LE?

Now it's just time to wait for Final Fantasy IV and Mario + Luigi: Partners in Time to penny out... did BB never carry Animal Crossing: Wild World guides?
Arggh, a penny Rome: Total War guide continues to elude me. If anyone has a copy for trade, check my list.
I'll look for you tommorrow at my local BB (I didn't have time to check it).

They had regular Rome: TW guides a few weeks ago... all I found today were guides for the expansion.

For anyone that has The Frozen Throne guide, how is it? Full color, or black and white garbage?
did BB never carry Animal Crossing: Wild World guides?
Yes, I believe I have seen it at Best Buy. But, I could be mistaken.

yea they had the animal crossing guide at BB, but they are quickly gone. I dont think i see them for a while now.

Unless the regular Xenosaga 2 guide at eb pennied out recently, it is still full priuce. The one on the master list should be the limited edition.

Thanks a ton, it was the regular one I saw and now I know it's not worth it to make the special trip back for it.

The Sims 2: University? was it just dropped because I checked it a week ago and it was still full price.
The Sims 2: University? was it just dropped because I checked it a week ago and it was still full price.
I believe so, because it had the .01 price tag just like all the other guides I found that people had said just dropped (Dawn of War, Star Wars Galaxies, etc).
any ideas on what to do when store sells you the guide but want to rip off the cover?
Take what you can get. Better than nothing if you're not a collector and you're going to use it.

I have:

Jak X Racing w/dvd PS2
Grand Theft Auto Vice City PC
Rome Total War Barbarian Invasion PC
Dragonball Z Buu's Fury GBA

And several more...looking for the Sims 2 guide that just pennied out at Best Buy.

Also, I saw the huge Star Wars Galaxies book but passed on it because it was beat up and I figured no one would want it. Willing to go back and grab it if some one wants to trade for the Sims 2. It's not collector quality but will work for some one that just wants it to play the game.

Yeah... I mean, it's a penny. You can always keep an eye out for another one.

Did "The Sims 2" for the console systems get pennied out?

Its no longer on Best Buy's website, only the PC guide is.

A weird note is that The Sims 2 guide for PC is still full price, but The Sims 2: University guide (which includes the full Sims 2 guide) is a penny.

Ah, that explains much. I had one, and it rang up full price. I didn't notice it wasn't University. strangeness

Crap. Apparently my buying a few penny guides a while ago at my local EB gave them a heads up, and now they're pulling them like crazy. Last time I went I noticed 10+ MP2, 3+ Baten Kaitos, and 4+ Genji guides, but I didn't pick them up cause they were giving me a hard time when I was only buying a few. Now there's nothing.

I wish I took a picture of this thing I saw at my Best Buys.

The sign was right next to the Guide rack, and it said "Guides ring up for .01 sell for 7.00".

I'm pretty sure they will eventually get into trouble for not selling the guides for the price it rings up.
