Puma, Protip: Stop wearing skinny jeans, purple headbands, flannel shirts, etc.

Wonder why girls "loved" those things but then you were dateless for the dance?

If one asks you to go shopping, you're already too far gone :[

It's always hard to shop for the guy who has everything. Plus marten is TN, TD.

father getting new ps3 slim thing for mainly blu-ray playing but also to enjoy games (if any ever come out hurrrrrrrrrrrrr) for 200$ via some work thing.

questions concerning this:
his tv only has DVI in. his sound system has no optical audio support (its a nice system, just old)

first off, i'd get him an hdmi to dvi cable. that'd solve that issue. however the issue of sound. is the ps3 smart enough or have an option to enable sound from the a/v cable (red and white) AND the hdmi video at the same time. or is it stupid and only routes audio through the hdmi port when something is plugged into it.

next question, i remember someone saying something about how the ps3 was a cool bluray player because it could automatically update itself or something. what was this about?

um yea, i think thats it for now. i'd ask what games are good, but i think my father is mostly interested in gran turismo whenever that comes out. so any realistic racing games with billions of cars.

thanks buds.

I've never heard of that, but my Neuro teacher was saying how on average men are becoming more feminine due to woman flushing BC pills into the water system.

We'll see about that.

You can do just video through HDMI and audio through the multi-out.

That updating business is just related to the firmware, so any sort of new feature/support could theoretically be implemented easily on the PS3. Like if they were to upgrade the BD live stuff.
We'll see about that.

Don't worry about it. We came up with a brilliant plan B, but thanks.

You ever get an IDE hard drive?

I think what you're talking about is the PS3 being a cool Blu-ray player because Sony will update it to work with all Blu-ray titles and specs until the format dies. If you bought a cheap Blu-ray player from a year or two ago there's a good chance that it won't play some future titles well or at all or be able to utilize new features of the blu-ray spec.

The update is easy but it's not automatic and it kind of takes 10 minutes every time, maybe a little less nowadays.

I think you need to make sure the TV's DVI in supports the DVI with HDCP standard, or else I think 1080p is locked out. I'm pretty sure most HDTV DVI ins do support HDCP but I have seen at least 2 that don't. If it's a 720p TV just ignore this post.

i've got the tv manual with me, what would i be looking for that indicates hdcp? the diagram of the back of the tv has the dvi port listed as DVI/HDCP. Is that good to go then?

i see a feature listed that says it can turn a 480p input signal to either 540p or 1080i.

Not yet, but I'm keeping an eye out. If you ever find one, let me know and I'll buy it off you. That goes for anyone else.

I'm not sure how I feel about this Jeremiah show...

Hrmm, if it mentions HDCP at all it should do it.
IDK for sure though- I believe the section you are listing refers to the upscaling options only. 90% sure you'll be fine.
Do you have one (ps3 slim) you can test it with?

(Note: one of the little publicized hardware differences between the slim and fat PS3s is the removal of the HDCP validation hardware in favor of some software emulated HDCP). A small number of people on the Sony forums are reporting some TV's are failing the HDCP handshake with the slim.

i don't, neither me nor anyone i know has a ps3

everyone i know is a pc or 360 gamer.

the specs say the tv can do 1080i, so i guess that should be good enough.

Yeah, I'd love to pull a Three Sheets and travel the world doing nothing but drinking.

Someday. In the meantime, thank god for beer coolers separated by country at 99 bottles.

Ok so doing a little more reading, it sounds like the ps3 can be set to a variety of display modes and that it scales accordingly if the game doesn't support your display mode.

For example. I set the PS3 to 1080i which is good to go in games that support 1080 resolution and all Blu-Rays. However, if the game doesn't support 1080i/p res, even though its set to 1080i, it will be smart enough to change to 720p (which the TV does support).

Is that correct?

Yes, as far as my understanding of the output resolution auto-detection goes.
You should be fine, the 1080p setting is about the only setting that has issues with it, and exclusively the HDCP issues.

When is Guitar Hero Van Halen supposed to come out? ;) I am worn out with Guitar games...but some of you are just hard core rock band/ GH players....

The only thing I am midly concerned about is that apparently for some games or tvs or something, if the game isn't native 1080, the PS3 or TV or whatever will scale it all the way back to 480p. But, I think thats because some HD CRT TVs support only 480p and 1080i and not 720p. However, this TV does support 720p according to this anyway:
Display Capabilities
Digital TV Standard What is "Digital TV Standard"? HDTV-Ready - Requires separate receiver to view HDTV signals.
Aspect Ratio What is "Aspect Ratio"? 4:3 • 16:9 Enhanced
Broadcast Format Supported What is "Broadcast Format Supported"? 1080i (HDTV) • 720p (HDTV) • 480p (EDTV) • 480i (SDTV) • 540p
Built-in Tuner What is "Built-in Tuner"? NTSC
Is that correct?
No, Microsoft had the foresight to add a chip that scales the video on the 360 but Sony sucks ass and didn't do that for the PS3.

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2007/01/headstart.ars/2

I think that means the developer has to enable that scaling but most games do and it realistically shouldn't be a big problem. I have a 1080i set myself and haven't ever had an issue with it and it's a complete non-issue with Blu-ray movies. It was a big problem around the time of the PS3 launch but it's not a big deal anymore.

Brutal Legend is amazing. Kinda worried I'm almost done with it since I have only three more story mission achievements yet and the story seems like its wrapping up, but man is it cool. Games

I own all of those except Maniac Mansion.
I did once upon a time. Maniac Mansion which, if I remember correctly was on floppies, I had held onto because it was all that although I hadn't been able to play it for ages. It was a heartbreaker to sell them, but I came to a point where I wanted a few dollars instead of boxes of games I couldn't play anymore. Hopefully gog will do all these in time.

Day of the Tentacle was technically a Maniac Mansion game? :whistle2:k

Just saw the video of Seth Green's rant. The dude looks like a man in a child's body.
