Anime and Manga Thread Vol. 1: Visions of a God
By emotional weight, I don't just mean sadness. Elfen Lied was also far more disturbing than Air, which adds to it.

Air was more tragic, if that's what you're getting it. I mean of course you'd have more sympathy for an innocent, perfect little girl than you would for
someone who has killed hundreds of people mercilessly
. D'uh.

But yeah, I'm always wrong, so fuck me. In the beard.
You have a beard? Ew.
I think it's time for a Kirin's Worst Ten Animes [made in the past ten years] list. I need some good shows to watch.

Anyone interested in the 7-part Halo Anime, made by 5 studios (one by Bones, one directed by Oshii)? Trailer just came out, here:

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/24/h...-3d-swording-surprise-teddy-bears/2#c20394606

Maybe it'll finally teach some people about anime, although you see some of the comments there. They're all saying the art style is "weird".

I think it looks fantastic and can't wait.

but it's hilarious to watch all of them moan and cry.. about getting a "western" artist...

When's the last time any western animation was this solid?

The only one that comes to mind is the Clone Wars series and that's more cartoony.
You have a beard? Ew.
No, heh. It's just a line from a movie that my friend used to say a lot.

Might watch Lain next...

*in refernece to the Kirin/Darksage battle over Utena*

Anyway, I have to give credit to DarkSage for at least going through the first few episodes even though he seems to hate it. I would have given it 2, maybe 3 episodes to grabs my attention and if it didn't, I would have cast it off then and there. Like I did with Moribito when Adult Swim started showing it. I watched like 3 episodes maybe and was like "ok... fuck this show." And I haven't watched it since. And it's not like I could even give as much detail on why I didn't like it as DSRK did with Utena. Even Fate/Stay Night was in a similar situation when I watched the first dvd. If it wasn't for the last episode really drawing me in, I would have cast that series off also.
Wow, my bad. I thought you had good taste in anime, so i was wondering why you didn't like it. Must've been someone else. Thank god :)
That was me. :)

A few more notes on Elfen Lied, before I hang it up for good.

The opening song, "Lilium," is probably one of the most beautiful openings for an anime, ever. Anyone who says otherwise is wrong.

Also, I liked the show. The end.
That was me. :)
You suck. :)

Agree 100%, Lilium is an amazing song because it reminds you of how good Elfen Lied was. It fits the show so perfectly, although i did find it strange how i was watching a japanese show with a french song with english subtitles :D

Ugh, the song is being sung in Latin, yo. I guess I should also mention that it was written by two Japanese people—both of whom did the music for Elfen Lied.

Anyway, I agree that it is a great song, but I don't think it is the best.

Lots of arguing going on. You know what's a good show? PlanetES

If someone has seen it all the way thru and badmouths it, we will have words... :boxing:
I just picked up all of The Big O. What are people's opinion of that?
I really dig it - one of my favorite giant robot shows. I often refer to it as the "Utena" of the genre, on account of all the strange imagery and allegory involved. The second half is much stronger and more compelling than the first, but that's not to say the first half isn't enjoyable too. The slick visual style and one of the best anime soundtracks *ever* really help to complete the package.
I just picked up all of The Big O. What are people's opinion of that?

Has anyone ever gotten an art box from http://www.designpaulchampagne.com/
The site hasn't been updated in about a year and a half, but I'd like to see if he could make me a box for my Cardcaptor Sakura.
I'd love to get that Gungrave box, and if he could, a custom Death Note one to hold all nine volumes and maybe all three liveactions and both relights.

Somehow though, i doubt it.
Doubt what?

Apparently, he has another site that has to do with leather car stuffs that was just updated 2 months ago. http://www.designpaulchampagne.com/PorscheLeather.html
I mean that he still does it. I shot him off an email just to be sure though.

I watched 5 Centimeters per Second just now, and it made me further justify why i don't watch movies that often. The artwork is beautiful, and the animation, the soundtrack.

Everything about it is great, the story is very touching- and then it ends. 1 hour and 2 minutes. I just like TV Series' more because there's something to keep me hooked, to keep me watch and watching. Movies are 1-2 hours, and that's it. Sure, the art is that movie is almost unmatched in a TV series, but i'd just prefer more fleshed-out stories i guess.
I mean that he still does it. I shot him off an email just to be sure though.
Let me know what he says. I spent ~$200 on anime in the past couple weeks, I think I have to wait a little while before doing this. Plus, a lot of my anime, including Cardcaptor Sakura, is at my parents' house though now that I finally have an apartment of my own and the room for it, I plan on moving it all down.

Will do. Sounds nice to finally have a place (and your anime) all to yourself. I don't have the room anymore to hold all of my anime neatly, but idk how much i'll get to watch it in college so it'll probably have to wait a couple years before i sort it to make it look awesome and orderly.

For now, it'll just be wherever i find room for it.

Was the Evengelion one the official one? Did you deal with him directly to get either of them? How was that experience?

Finally!!! Though it does kinda suck that its going to be (assumingly) 5 boxsets, I really have no problems with it as long as they dont have Johnny Young Bosch in it (god forbid, as Johan)

Moribito is pretty darn good. If you don't like it, you flat-out suck. Period.
I've got 18 volumes of Monster sitting here and can't gather the motivation to read them.
Yeah, because god forbid you read one of the best manga ever produced. I'm not even exaggerating on that one.

NO!! You'll go blind. It's that bad.

It's just that I read the first book when it came out, was bored until the end, and I figured it would get confusing and I'd forget things, unless I waited til the whole series was out. So I did, but now...
I wonder how much Monster box set will cost total.. 74 episodes equals how many DVDs?
My guess will be $40 SRP x 5 boxsets.

Yeah, that's about it. Minus the shitty part, because I obviously like 'em.

I just watched Canaan episode 1 and I thought of you... Well, more like I thought of how you'd hate it because the lead is a strong, independent female who also has a gun. My step-bro walked in on the bath scene in that episode. Oh, that was hilariously awkward.

Punisher, are those for sure legit DVDs?

Can you both please stop criticizing what other people like? It's an unnecessary display of egoism. At the very least use tact in crticisms. That isn't much to ask.

Speaking of things that suck, I just finished Shigurui Death Frenzy. Not only was the show extremely cliche and boring, the entire series only completes 1 of the 3 storylines they introduce in the 1st episode.

Bah. Im gonna watch Baccano next, hopefully that will be a bit more interesting.

Baccano is fantastic, and probably the best thing that's been released on DVD this year so far. Enjoy!

Sorry. I will stop my crticism of people because it is mean and not a nice thing to have an opinion that others don't agree with. Please forgive me, mr. backseat mod. :( :( :(

Yeah, Baccano was pretty good. Rail Tracer was the best~

I finished Shadow Star Narutaru. The anime wasn't very good, but it seemed interest enough for me to get the manga and read through it.

I'd definitely check out the manga. It's pretty shocking, far beyond what you witnessed in the anime, but also quite compelling. The anime adaptation was a real missed opportunity, and sloppily handled pretty much every step of the way.

Volume 1 through 9 of the manga is apparently heavily edited though, and I can't find an unedited copy.

It's weird how the end of Dragon Ball foreshadows the main problem DBZ had, which was that it wasn't as concise as it should've been. The fight between Goku and Piccolo Jr. takes 4-5 episodes and then is followed by the filler-style conclusion further proving that nothing is ever as simple as it seems for Goku with the wedding that didn't even need to be there. I'm always a bit turned off whenever I get to the end of Dragon Ball, though everything else in that series is great.

Now I can start the first two, and best, seasons of Yu Yu Hakusho, which I just got from Amazon a week or so ago.
