Anime and Manga Thread Vol. 1: Visions of a God
It's weird how the end of Dragon Ball foreshadows the main problem DBZ had, which was that it wasn't as concise as it should've been. The fight between Goku and Piccolo Jr. takes 4-5 episodes and then is followed by the filler-style conclusion further proving that nothing is ever as simple as it seems for Goku with the wedding that didn't even need to be there. I'm always a bit turned off whenever I get to the end of Dragon Ball, though everything else in that series is great.
Completely agree. This is why I preferred the manga. The Goku/Piccolo Jr. fight went by pretty fast, and the ending was better. Goku and Chi-Chi flying off into the distance, next chapter is the arrival of Raditz. None of the bad wedding filler. Although Goku thinking a wedding was a type of food was pretty funny.

Generally, I didn't like DB/Z filler. The stuff in DB was ok. I could live with it. But Z's was generally horrible, save for the Afterlife Budokai and Gohan's training. The Garlic Jr. arc? Good lord, that was bad. It's only saving grace was the fact that the english dub had gems like this:

Alright, so I have recently watched Millennium Actress and Origin: Spirits of the Past.

I enjoyed Millennium Actress, but I watched the movie while I was really tired, so I wasn't really in the best state to watch a movie that basically combines multiple movies together through an overarching story. Now, all that's left of Satoshi Kon's work that I need to see are Perfect Blue and Paranoia Agent.

Hmm, I would have a really hard time picking a favorite of his, since all of his movies are so different from each other. How can you pick a favorite from Magnetic Rose, Paprika, and Tokyo Godfathers? :D

Origin: Spirits of the Past was really good. The movie was beautiful; the forest with the red roots combined with the destroyed urban landscape really hit a chord with me. The themes in the movie aren't anything new, but the story used to present the themes was good enough for me; probably not for some of you other people though. Jerks.;)

One thing though: the theme song or whatever that plays during the beginning of the movie is fucking amazing. Holy shit, I love this song.

If you don't want to hear the song that plays during the opening of the movie because you have not seen the movie, then that's fine with me; I just hope you would see the movie then.:D

I just found my VHS of Roujin Z, and from the looks of it, it's still at the spot I left off at years ago. I should find a VCR so I can finish watching it.

Along with it was my VHS copy of Armitage III: Poly-Matrix. I loved this movie, and it was the second or third anime movie I saw on Sci-Fi (first was Tenchi Muyo in Love). Upon my most recient viewing, I realized that it was nowhere near as good as I remembered. Kiefer Sutherland might be good in 24, but he's crap at voice acting.

While the story wasnt amazing, its definitely one of the best looking movies i've seen. Whenever anyone asks if anime would really make a difference on Blu-ray, I always recommend them to check out the blu-ray for Origin, and ive yet to have anyone come back to me that didnt have their jaw dropped.

I ended up watching it on DVD, but I wanted to watch it on Blu-ray. It's just that I just spent a lot of money on Right Stuf, so I settled with watching it on DVD through Netflix. It looked great on DVD, but I bet it looks amazing on Blu-ray.

However, I am definitely still going to pick it up on Blu-ray sometime later, and re-watch it.

I wasn't a fan of the manga, though I only have the bit around the first saga, mostly because of Goku and his awkward dialog. He speaks like a city kid and not the ignorant mountain boy that barely knew what a girl was when he met Bulma.

I definitely don't remember that Pilaf was the voice of Hiei in Yu Yu Hakusho. I've also heard Oolong as the father of Keiko, too. It definitely feels like an early 90's cartoon/anime within the first few episodes with cheesy endings to episodes and all that.

:applause:

That was awesome. In other news, i watched the Air movie, and i gotta say, they took everything great about the TV Series, and fucked it up. Just my opinion though, i wouldn't want Razzuel to go onto too much of a rant, so....

I watched episodes 6-20 of Princess Tutu this wekeend (26 total), and i gotta say, i really love it. I sorta feel gay sometimes for watching it (i'll be honest, they dance a little too long in some scenes), but the story gets better with each episode. Now that i'm really into the heart of the story, i gotta say that i absolutely love it. Also, the OP which i thought was too slow and gay in the beginning, has really started growing on me, and i fall in love with it more with each passing episode.

I guess Princess Tutu has taught me a valuable lesson in anime. I'll be honest, judging from the Product Desicriptions and most of the people's reaction to it on CAG, i thought it was going to be a serious drama a la FullMetal Alchemist, but centered around dancing, and fighting battles by dancing. fuck was i wrong.

It's nothing like it appears, and there really is no good way of describing it without scaring someone off. I guess the only real way to get into it is to take KL's word, or since that never works, my word for it and give it a shot. It really is very good.

EDIT: I also am glad that i can be so open minded about anime. KL likes Tutu but hates Elfen Lied, Chronis hates Elfen Lied, DarkSage hates Utena (which is apparently similar to Tutu?). It's nice to be able to enjoy everything from the fun-lovng-but-dark Princess Tutu to the not-at-all-fun-loving-but-awesome Elfen Lied, while at the same time not loving every single thing i watch Razzuel.

The fact that you needed to say gay twice when talking about Princess Tutu does not make a convincing argument form to watch.

Anyway, with tomorrow being the last day for the Right Stuf sale, I'm pretty much going to marathon disc 1 of Desert Punk to see if I like it enough to get the rest.

Hey, that's just how it comes off. It is indeed awesome. Don't make me come over there and tie you to a chair and force you to watch it, as sadly i don't think you ever will unless i do ;).

And i wouldn't consider one disk a "marathon", but whatever. Desert Punk was pretty good, funny at times, interesting at times, but at other times, painfully boring. It's a very inconsistent series, but overall worth a watch i'd say. I enjoyed it.

I'm thinking about possibly getting Princess Tutu from DeepDiscount. Although, they have two versions and both appear the same, but one is $5 more expensive. Anyone know what the difference is, if any? I'd prefer to get a non-thinkpak, if possible?

I just finished Princess Tutu myself. It was good. It's a traditional fairy tale, entertaining if not earth-shattering.

Ahiru's two friends and Neko-sensei's marriage obsession definitely made me chuckle more than once, funny stuff.

Well, it's a 4 episode disc so knowing me, I would have probably split that into 2 different veiwings. I mean, you guys whould have known that I still have my friend's FMP set that I borrowed in February, since I tend to watch stuff so slowly.

Well, technically yes, but your only other option is a "stackpak", with every disc laid atop another. Worst packaging *ever*! Get the slightly older collection to avoid this (which is the one priced at $35). It even has all the extras!

Also, I must emphasize again, Princess Tutu is fucking amazing. Not as amazing as Utena, but it comes close.

Oh, and I love the overwhelmingly positive reviews for the show on Amazon:

I also want to get the first season of Ah! My Goddess, but I want to get the premium set so the boxset matches with season 2. I'm not sure if I should just wait on it or not.

I gave up on waiting long ago. Far too expensive when compared to the budget release, and nearly two years later, it *still* hasn't gotten any cheaper.

Yes.

The plot thickens! Sounds like somebody's made it to episode 14.

I'm sorry, but Logos Naki World (Hellsing OP) is the most badass song i've ever listened to.

AAAnyway, i've wanted to watch a weekly show for some time now, that way i can make it to more than 30 or so episodes without getting bored. I think if i'd watched Yu Yu Hakusho weekly, i would've been more bearable, but watching it straight is just too boring.

Transition, i think i'm guna try Dragonball Kai. I remember watching DBZ back in the day here and there, but i never watched it seriously, and since it's still fairly new, i think it'd be a good show to watch weekly. Anyone know a good place to watch it subbed?

Watched the first 7 episodes of Lain. I can't say I'm crazy about it. It seems to be weird just for the sake of being weird a lot of the time. It took like 6 episodes before it finally started to make an inkling of sense. They really don't explain too much.

Also up to 14 episodes of Ah! My Goddess. It's one of those shows that's really not that spectacular or anything, but I still like it for some reason. Very lighthearted. My friend says the manga is way better, so I'll check that out later.

And saw the first 2 episodes of Bakemonogatari. One of the most fast-paced shows I've seen, ever. Lots of quick diaglogue, heh. Visual style is really nice, and the story has kept me interested so far, despite its randomness. Pretty awesome.

I read the first chapter of Bokurano. I like the premise. It's by the same guy that did Shadow Star Narutaru. I'm kinda sad that the first volume won't be released in English until February though.

I have to wonder how basic features change from disc to disc within a season set's release. I'm watching the first season of Yu Yu Hakusho and the first two discs have subtitles for both dubs while the third and fourth discs only offer subtitles for the Japanese dub. It's not really a big deal, but I'm not sure if there are specific reasons as to how the simplest of standard features aren't set in stone for every episode in the set.

It's not new for some of the DVD's I've watched, as the Simpsons' season sets change on subtitles all of the time from either having them freely available, not available (aka CC time), or I have to go through some BS means of getting them to appear.

Hmmm, you might want to reassess after you've watched a few more eps. It's dialogue-heavy but fast-paced it is not. I don't think it's spoiling anything by saying that the 3rd eps. is all dialogue. If I were to compare it to another anime, it bears more similarity to Sayonary Zetsubo Sensei w/ a side helping of the supernatural than anything else.

Anyway, this just in: I found out I'm a self-hating masochistic cat. Why? Because my innate curiosity about the Endless Eight arc in the 2nd season of Haruhi Suzumiya is killing me. It forces me to endure watching the same damn episode despite my better judgment. This is definitely one case where I'm glad to actually download and not buying the dvds... EVER. My SOP has been always to dl anime and then buy the eventual dvd. It won't happen in this case. Nevertheless, I'm still dumb for continuing to watch it in the first place in the hopes that there might actually be a significant change in the story. :bomb:

I finally finished Eureka Seven. I enjoyed it. I thought the second half was better overall even though some of the episodes near the end dragged on—they didn't have as much story development as I was expecting. Ray and Charles were pretty damn awesome; Dominic and Anemone were wonderful as well.

Eureka Seven ending spoilers:
Well, the ending didn't happen as I was expecting; when the control cluster got destroyed I realized I was in store for an entirely different ending than I was imagining. I am glad that none of the other main characters died; Ray and Charles dieing really pissed me off. There were a few points that made me cry; one of those points was Dominic and Anemone's struggle to be together during one of the last episodes, so I was really glad to see Dominic and Anemone finally together in the end.

Then there is the epilogue. Everything was fine until the epilogue. I was expecting all of the open story threads to be put to a close, but the show didn't even do that. They don't explain what happened to any of the members of Gekkostate besides the children. I was really disappointed that the show is vague in explaining what happened to Renton and Eureka. Sure there is a glimpse of them in a forest off somewhere, but why were they gone for a year, and what they hell are they doing now. Oh well.

After finished Eureka Seven I moved onto Doujin Work. I was surprised that each episode is only about 14 minutes long; however, that doesn't stop the show from being awesome and hilarious. Most of the humor is perverted since the show is about this girl—and some other characters—making erotic doujinshi.

Once I finished the anime, I was curious if the manga was any good, which is what the anime was based off of. The first volume of the Doujin Work anime came with the first volume of the manga. I started reading it immediately after finishing the anime, but I wasn't planning on reading too many pages since I needed to go to sleep. However, the manga is just as good as the anime, so I ended up reading the first volume in one sitting.

There are some differences so far in how the characters look and act; plus the humor in the manga is more explicitly perverted. Even though I had just watched the anime I still found the manga to be hilarious because of those changes, and because the manga has jokes that the anime did not have.
Yeah! Sentai Filmworks is licensing Clannad After Story; the news article states that it is slated for release in October. This is great news because I have heard that Clannad After Story is even better than Clannad; however, I have not watched Clannad yet, so I should get on that soon.

Started (finally) watching Suzuka today. Got through 7 episodes, and I have to say that Suzuka is one of the more annoying characters I've run into in quite some time.

On a happier note, i have a long story to tell about how i finally organized my anime collection, but that's for a blog i'm too tired to write tonight. Just building excitement i guess ;).

Thanks to that, i didn't get to watch anime all day. Hope i don't have to cry myself to sleep.

Personal opinion. I disagree. I love Suzuka.

Also, her personality is explained throughout the show.

I meant that she doesn't really change. I personally thought she was a great, mysterious character up to a certain point, but eventually it starts to drag on a little too long. If he doesn't like her at episode 7, i just don't think he'll like her any more as he watches.

That's cool, maybe the first season will drop in price soon so i can see all of it. I can't believe you posted that article without mentioning He is my Master though. I've never seen it, but one of my friends says it's amazing (and extremely perverted), so i'm thinking of getting it. Not for MSRP of course ;)

Your friend is a pedophile.

Alright, I'm 18 episodes into Suzuka and I like Suzuka as a character a bit more. Although I think she should have changed her attitude at least a little. I guess I'll see where all of this ends up when I watch the rest of the series tomorrow.

Alrighty, so I have watched Kanamemo episode four and Aoi Hana episode five. Also, I just finished watching The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.

Kanamemo continues to be hilarious. Episode four is my favorite so far. There are more of Haruka's drunken and perverted antics; Haruka is probably my favorite character. :D

Kanamemo episode four spoilers:
The biggest surprise for me was that the episode had a musical type of focus. There were a lot of parts of the episode where the girls were singing. Those songs that they sang were really great; nice and catchy.

I am still really enjoying Aoi Hana. The story/character development in episode five is not as pronounced in this episode as it was in the previous episode, but I was able to enjoy the subtlety of it. I can't wait for episode six where they are going to have the school play! Also, I have to say this again: Aoi Hana is beautiful! Beautiful!

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time was great. I love stuff that deals with time travel, and this movie does a great job with it. Also, the movie had a great combination of funny, tense, and touching moments.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time spoilers:
I liked how Makoto's time travel powers were fun at first, but over time she began to notice the ill effects her multiple leaps were having on the people around her. The ending parts were really well done. Chiaki saves Kousuke and the girl with his last leap. Then Makoto realizes she loves Chiaki, but Chiaki has to return back to his own time. However, Makoto realizes she got her final leap back, so she can fix everything now. It was sad though that Chiaki still had to leave in the end.

Oh yeah! I finished watching Furi Kuri last night. That show is fucking insane. At first I didn't know what to think, but it finally grew on me during episode three. I got used to the insanity, and started having fun with all the random craziness. I guess I only saw the show for face value though because I was reading how it is supposed to be a coming of age type of story, but I didn't really get that while I was watching it. It is definitely seems like a show that would be worth r-ewatching though. Not only for trying to understand the show better, but to see that animation in action again. The animation in Furi Kuri is amazing. The fight with the gunslinger hand thing near Medical Mechanica was probably my favorite scene.

fuck, this post is too long; now no one is going to fucking read it.

Almost finished with Bokurano. It's one giant cluster fuck, but it's brilliant. I'll need to check out the anime sometime after I finish with the manga.
This is the only part I read. :(

I didn't much like Bokurano myself. Of course, I didn't read the manga. Nothing shocking. The characters were weak-willed imbeciles. I dropped it halfway through only to pick it back up because I felt it had to be finished. Considering I liked Narutaru so much, I was disappointed. Maybe I'm going crazy but I also recall hearing something about the show's director being a little bitch who didn't want to handle the sensitive subject matter of Bokurano or something. @_@

Agreed. In fact it's one of those shows that I find gets better each time I watch it. The vibe the show gives is really unique despite a basic story.

Anybody have any great anime comedies to recommend? I just finished watching Ouran Host Club and it was pretty neat. I also recently started watching Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo. It has an art style unlike any that I've seen before.
